In keeping with Virus_Of_Life's observation that winter has begun (and as a Chicago resident who took three times as long to get home from work last night due to a heavy snowstorm plus winds plus 15 MPH drivers minus plows minus sand minus road salt, I am convinced), Here's a new "What Bourbon Did You Purchase Today?" thread for Old Man Winter.

I warmed up with Weller Antique. Very worthy pour; noticeably different from ORVW 10/107 - not as much depth or richness as ORVW has - but quite stellar on its own.

We're very fortunate to have quite excellent whiskey available to us at very reasonable prices. This one is $18.99 at Binny's.

You beat me to it, snowing like crazy here at the moment and that says winter to me!!

Not necessarily today, but over the past few weeks I've bought various things, some Hirsch, Fighting Cock, Wild Turkey and others.

Did a little Christmas shopping today and a bottle of WTAS found its way home with me. It was the only one on the shelf and what was I to do? I couldn't just leave it there all by itself. Would you?

Got a parcel today with 4 roses 120. 51+38 shipping. A very, very good price. I did also win a bottle today also on American EBay. WTAS for 71+54 shipping. A real dissent price as well I think.

One of Santa's elves stopped by my house early this year. He came in the form of a UPS man. Straight from Santa himself in Ohio, I received a 3 bottle case of the 08 edition of George T Stagg. This coincides perfectly with the beginning of my winter break. Life is good.

Chili, I hope you enjoy the Ezra. Although, some don't care for it, I have really enjoyed that one. It's cheap. It's hard to find. But, I think it's really tasty.

Russell's Reserve Small Batch Bourbon, current iteration. This one seems rather more in line with WT 101 than the first bottles, which wowed some and dismayed others with their subtle interpretation of the manic bird. It's a solid bourbon full of all the good stuff one associates with Wild Turkey, at the 90 proof it's been for some time. Well-priced too for the quality offered.

While visiting mom & other family in Memphis, I found a PVW 15 'left' of $50 (most of what I have seen of late is approaching $60)......wish there had been more than one on the shelf.

Also, if anyone is in the Memphis area and wants a deal on KC - saw it for $19.99/750ml today, just send me a PM and I'll give you the name/address of the place. I have not seen KC for less than $28 in quite a while.

Drove up to Gainesville today to meet a friend for lunch. Stopped by a couple holes-in-the-wall that usually turn up some good finds. Found a couple of bargains at one store that I couldn't pass up - a bottle of Bulleit for $19.99 and the infamous (ri)1 for just $35.99. I had originally passed on the (ri)1 at a local place for $49.99, but figured it was worth a shot at almost 30% less.

We embarked on our annual pilgrimage to the Pittsburgh Ikea today and as luck would have it, one of the decked out PA liquor outlets is right across the street from the store. I cleaned them out of their 4 remaining Lot B's and added three Weller Antiques to the cart for good measure.

Well I wanted to buy a bottle of the 12yo Weller but the Liquor Barn on Man O' War didn't have it on the shelf when I was there yesterday. I'll check when I'm back in Lexington in two weeks.

My outlaws purchased me a bottle of WTRB when we were visiting over Christmas. Although it isn't a bourbon my father gave me back a bottle of Jack Daniels' Barrelhouse 1 in the wooden box from 1994 that I had bought for him for $37 back then.

Are you saying taste or asthetics?

TBoner
01-07-2009, 18:40
Not gonna speak for Tony, but I think the taste is different and better. Note that the label change occurred just a bit over 12 years after S-W quit distilling. Coincidence? Perhaps. But I get a touch more of that old cotton candy in the old-label Weller 12. I've one handle left and that's it, but apparently someone else in DFW agrees with me, because he bought about 30 fifths and a half-dozen handles in a week in early 2008. Every store I went to that had a good stock suddenly sold out. It's good stuff.

No bourbon purchases for me today. None since I bought some BTAC before the New Year, actually. And I kind of like it that way for now...

:D Well, one of my biggest accounts is switching their purchasing to their location in Canada...so...I guess I better learn to like Canadian whiskey, and start ending sentences with "eh?"
I have been pleasantly surprised with the CC 100 proof. My experience with Canadians (whiskies) is very limited, but they have been just too soft and mild for my liking. This is definitely bolder than those, with lots of caramel coming through. I think the higher proof is a plus, but it seems more than just a higher alcohol content working here.

Anyway, Go Leafs!, and pass the CFL rulebook, eh?

did it have a 'real' cork?

at 90 proof and at around $10 (here in PA at least), it's a good value. nothing outstanding, but i'd still rather have 80 proof Benchmark at 9.99

I am seriously drooling over that WT 12YO. I wish they'd bring it back to the domestic market.

Meantime, I picked up my first-ever bottle of Elmer T. Lee. It's growing on me. Thick and oily, which I love; but no particular flavor note that I can pin down, which I find odd. Most bourbons have a little toffee or vanilla or caramel; nothing stands out in particular to me. But still it is very pleasant overall.

I'm beginning to believe that BT uses a house yeast that contributes a mustiness to their whiskey. I found Buffalo Trace seriously objectionable because of this; Elmer does have it, but it's not so bad. Maybe it's the higher rye mashbill that makes it less of a pain. Rock Hill Farms has just a touch of this, but only barely noticeable.

I strongly second your opinion on BT. Only had 2 bottles myself and never been able to finish the 2d one due to the strong musty tinge. I keep it around for company, egg nog, and the wife......not necessarily in that order. Never noticed it in ETL though, but, did note a touch of it in RHF. Got to be something in that particular mashbill. Glad someone else noticed it. For a long time, thought it was just me.

Today I purchased...nothing!

I took my family for two days in Wisconsin Dells, at the invitation of my sister-in-law. On the way out of town there is a package store called Mister K's. I decided to check to see if they had anything there that I could not find in Chicago (say, BIB or at least 100 proof Tom Moore/Kentucky Tavern/KY Gentleman).

The place is far more devoted to beer and wine. The only thing I could find in spirits that I really haven't seen (not that I've tried very hard) was Old Thompson blended whiskey.

I passed.

I did get to come home to my Elmer T. Lee, which I sorely missed while I was away.

I had to go to Louisville today and I have a strict rule that whenever I am in Kentucky I must buy bourbon!

Nothing fancy though, just picked up an Old Forester Signature and an Old Weller 107. These are new for me, I have never had the chance to try these before.

Edit: Now I'm confused but that is pretty easily done. The bottle of Weller that I bought today says Old Weller The Original 107 Proof. It says 7 summers old on the label. When I try to look up info on this, I keep finding OWA but my label does not have the word Antique on it at all. It was bottled in Frankfort and Its a 375 ml bottle. I see two sets of numbers on the bottom of the bottle... 23 and then a 84. So my question... is this Old Weller out of production now or has the label just been changed? I don't find this listed on their website either.

gblick
01-26-2009, 07:15
Hondo, I'm pretty sure that is a recent bottling. They currently put that older style label on the 375ml bottles, I'm not sure why. And the newest bottles that just recently came out have that 84 on the bottom too, at least the ones I've seen.

I have speculated that only the OCPR, VSOF & Weler Cent were available up here. I'm not sure if these have all been sitting on the shelf the whole time or whether they were inherited stock from somewhere else when the Maine Beverage Co took over all of the liquor stores in 2004..maybe sitting in a warehouse and recently put out on the shelves...I know that's the case with at least a few of these...I've found 5 VSOFs, 4 OCPRs and 1 Weller and those are the only three on the state tear sheet. I would love to get my hands on the Dickel & Harper just to complete the set, but I'm really happy with the bottles I have scored....I'd really love to find a couple more Wellers hanging around, too. The place I went to today was a little grocery store in a fairly quaint little tourist town called Kennebunkport....maybe they were counting on the Bush prezes to snatch up all those high priced bottles.

While drinking, I could have sworn I was had a piece of rock candy thrown in there. This is he first time I have tried KC neat. A bit on the sweet side, but it was pretty good. It's a current one. The bottom of the bottle says 08. I wouldn't mind trying an older bottle though. I did find this Wiki list of places that are selling it. http://www.shopwiki.com/detail/d=J.W._Dant_Bourbon_100/
So I think Dant is still available.

My bottle is the Dant "Olde Bourbon", label is identical to the one on the far right in the ggil's photo (thanks). I've seen the Dant 100 in IN several times. Came close to buying it but erred on the side of caution.

I didn't even know they were still making the Olde Bourbon. Emerald and I saw some in DC a couple weeks back. He picked up a handle from 1980 or so. He'll have to chime in on what he thinks about it. Here's a picture (http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=8013&d=1231906559) of the bottle we found. It's the handle on the far right side front row.

Eagle Rare 10

I'm liking this stuff alot. Very pleased with it. I tried it straight out of the bottle and got way too much wood. After it opened up most of the wood disappeared and I found a bourbon that suits my palette. For 28 bucks its not a bad buy. If it was 20 or less like I have read it had been I would be really excited instead of just smugly pleased that I have added another widely distributed goto pour to the list.

I'm a new guy, but I'm jumping in head first. Got a bonus from work yesterday and did a tour of my four favorite package stores in Pensacola last night. Met the owner of one for the first time. VW Lot B

Nice buys. You will enjoy those, less the Scotch. I cannot comment there, but the BT (Weller, PVW) buys are great.

Now you need some Glencairns :D

I went to the BamBooze in the Food World shopping center near Sports Academy. Not sure if they have another location. They don't have the BTAC in stock right now, but it's the only place where I've seen the Pappy 15 (which I bought), Pappy 20 and VW Rye.

I saw the two ryes from the BTAC at the Liquor Cabinet which is just outside P'cola. I may go back for the Thomas H. Handy, but I wanted to try the regular Sazerac Rye (Baby Saz?) first. Picked up the Lot B there. The owner happened to be in and we had a nice chat and tour of the bourbon aisle. He offered to try to order anything he didn't have. It was a fun evening.

Still more than the juice is worth, but good find on the cheep 50ml bottles.

Today was a fun day. I mapped out all of the liquor stores in Tucson, even though my best finds before lacked for the most part...

It was more of the same, with the 2nd to last store giving up some Old WT 80 proffers from 1992 and 93 and I picked them up so I had something from the day. By the way, its not bad juice. Far better than todays 80 and maybe 101. Much deepeer.

Now, the next and planned last store was a honey pot. The picture tells the message, but the best part is there are some goodies left.

So any of you Tucson Bourbon Hounds that are in need of some juice PM me

10/90. This will probably be the next bourbon I open.

The VW website doesn't show a retailer or distributor for AL and I've found only a few bottles across the state line in Pensacola, FL. In the two stores where I've found some, the folks there said it was hard to get. The Van Winkle selections are something I'll be looking for on any out-of-state travels in the future.

On the recommendation of Emerald I picked up the Julio's RHF..... this is a very nice albeit addicting pour. Side by side with a standard bottling it revealed a deeper flavor concentration, a toffee sweetness and a much silkier mouth feel. The most significant difference was the length of finish which was much longer and deeper with the Julio's.

Had my first ever Eagle Rare 10/101 find at a Florida liquor store. I think it's probably from the very, very end of the brand's production timeline because it's got a website address and email address on the label.

Cracked it tonight and think it's quite tasty. It's not life-shattering or "Oh, God, I gotta go back and buy the store out!" but very good for something that's $19 a liter.

Went to visit a friend in Milwaukee today. Stopped at a few places to see what I could find. A couple were recommended by a fellow SB member. There were a couple of nice stores with great selections and decent, if not odd prices. No dusties but a couple of good deals. Picked up a bottle of ER 10/90 and three OF Repeal Sets from one place. All on sale. My big score came while on the way back home. I stopped at the place I left a bunch of stuff last week. Upon further examination, I found a couple more interesting items. I spotted an older 1.75 of OGD BIB. It is still there. I also spotted three older 1.75's of Old Forester BIB. One of these is now in my possession. I also bought a BHC VSOF, a WTKS Pewter top, and the three Weller Centennials I left behind last week. I am a bit poorer, but also a bit happier. Cheers! Joe
