Keeping with the seasonal Cradle to Grave bourbon consumption theme line of threads (Purchased, Drinking/Drank, and Empty).... & the fact we are getting a little snow here in the SW. :smiley_acbt: .. a new empty bottle thread is born

The end of some treasured samples met there end last night... I have been nursing these for about 9 months... RHFs, Baby Saz, and Buffalo Trace :smil41df29a15fb35:

I think the ERs and PVW 15 will fall tonight.... decided I needed the bottles for the Blanton's BLind Tasting we will be doing when GoCougs gets here on the 31st...

As we start a new one, this is just to re-state the purpose of the Empty Bottle Support Group thread.

We all know how difficult it is to finish a bottle of whiskey, especially one that cannot be replaced easily. It's hard, but it's part of life.

We know we shouldn't let a bottle sit around for years with one drink in the bottom but everybody does it.

It's hard to let go.

This thread is here for you to seek support and provide support to others. We feel your pain. This thread is for saying goodbye to special friends as they become empty vessels, a fate that awaits us all.

Tonight the 4R1B bites the dust. I won't really miss this one too much and hope my next bottle is more like the first one I had as the nose in this one was a bit green and, ironically, stale at the same time; the taste in this one often has a hint of what I think bourbon would taste like if you dissolved a multi-vitamin in it, there are some other more pleasing flavors as well but this is the dominant taste all the way through the finish. This bottle was filled from barrel 9-4F from warehouse KE.

Emptied a bottle of Baker's tonight...I really enjoyed this, but it started to be a little funky on the last couple of pours -- I got a really strong peanut flavor. Anyway, making room for more open bottles on the bar from the bunker...plus this is an easy one to come by.

I killed a turkey today. WT Rye 101 to be specific. It served me well and actually went faster than many bourbons I had on hand, but I am not convinced it can even hold a candle to Rittenhouse Rye BIB.

mozilla
01-26-2009, 12:57
By "hold a candle" to Rittenhouse....what are you referring to?
IMO, WT rye has much more flavor than the Ritt. Bib.

kickert
01-26-2009, 12:59
I find Ritt does a better job of balancing the spice and flavor than WTR101. Don't get me wrong... I was very pleased with it, but I prefer Ritt BIB. (Especially when you consider the cost difference.)

mozilla
01-26-2009, 13:02
I agree that Rittenhouse is more sophisticated.

Although, I prefer the rough robust flavor of the Wild Turkey. Rittenhouse for the price might be the better deal...if I could find it in Texas.

I haven't had the Ritt, but WTRye101 is the best rye I've had other than Handy, I thought there was loads of flavor and spice -- both "heat" and "pumpkin pie" spice. For $20 this would be a regular purchase for me if it were available.

Just finished off my bottle of Eagle Rare SB 10.

Guess what I was doing last night? ER-10 (2004 case lot). The bottle I have is soooo good, we're talking good with a capital "G"

I immediately dropped half the bottle into an ER-10 split (375ml) to preserve the second half. The stuff is to die for... texture? '

Consider the best bottle of JDSB (caramel style) you ever had, and this bottle of ER-10 rivals it for $20 less. Not that I want to compare apples to oranges, but the caramel and texture in this particular bottle of ER10 reminds of an R-17 bottling of JDSB I had this past October.

Incredible... BB

Ok, so what's your favorite cork-top?!? Me: JDSB. They really go the gamut with the embossing and all. Deluxe, quality cork too... I like the wood stoppers like WTKS & JDSB. The RHF stopper is quite the feat, rounded and very snug to fit. Some the EWSB's don't seem to lock in too tight, too much air.

May be a Heaven Hill problem -- lots of bad EC12 corks out there. I really like the current Rare Breed cork with the turkey routed out -- that's pretty cool. I also like the standard Buffalo Trace corks with the ribbed wood (Saz Jr, BT, ER, BTAC, etc.)-- simple & elegant (although the gold & silver markings do tend to rub off).

I had imagined this one being open for a while and myself savoring a pour every now and then...unfortunately, it didn't work that way...I had a little taste tonight and took off running...my last pour is in the snifter right now, I will relish it, rest assured, but this one's outta here.

Probably won't see the likes of this one again :(

This may sound sinful to some but it worked beautifully - i had a near empty bottle of VW10yo 101proof (about 4 pours left) and i was saddened to see how quickly i'd drunk it so to extend its beautiful flavours the best i could i had a half bottle of EC12yo and i poured this into the VW10yo. Both mixed to become an incredible flavour! it was like the VW gave the EC a fuller flavour.

So now i have finished both bottles :frown: but it was a great way to make it go further... :yum::grin::crazy::cool:

Last night I killed off an ORVW 10/107. I have 6 bunkered but they go too fast as it's my go to pour. I can't find any more Van Winkles in my area either. Shortages suck! Make more for crying out loud!!

Same problem here, Binny's has never shipped to MI so I used to get stuff from Sam's, now they stopped shipping to MI also.

Bill, I almost bought a bottle a couple weeks ago Saturday. I was up in Milwaukee and it was on sale at one place for $12.99. Should have done it. Cheapest around here is $22.99. Joe

12.99????????? Wow....

I paid 27.99 on Cape Cod for a stray bottle. The only one I've seen around MA & NH. It didn't last long... a few weeks later it was empty! I really enjoyed it right down to the last drop. BB

When it's in season I always make it a point to save the latest Nip/Tuck episode for Friday, it's probably the best tv show I've ever seen and I want to enjoy it during a night where I don't have another day of work looming overhead. Anyway, it's kind of silly but a season or two ago I had some VWFRR while watching the current episode for that week and since then have insisted on pouring myself a generous bit of VWFRR whenever I watch the latest because any time the show is on I start thinking about it and if there is anything else in the glass I'll sit there wishing it was VWFRR. Anyway, tonight I watch the last episode of the current season and there is just enough in the VWFRR bottle for a nice last pour! :]

edit: While I'm glad another episode was listed on epguides for next week since the last time I checked I'm sad to say the bottle now isn't going to last the whole season like I was hoping it would... oh well...

I've never had and may never have the opportunity to taste a centennial for obvious stock and location reasons. Can anybody offer a side by side mouthfeel of a VW10yr100 and a SW Centennial to give me some solace? I know they're different but if the VW10yr100 scores ok against the WC i will feel a little better.

Finished off a bottle of VW10yr100, only have 2 in the bunker so now i will prob go with an easily accessible stock next - EC12yo or Blantons.

Last night shared the last of my first bottle of OFBB. Really the best whiskey I've had so far in my drinking career. So fat, lucious, sweet & spicey. Like a 94 proof mincemeat pie. Just divine. I'm getting a little choked up right now.

I like the cut of your jib sir! I've been holding off on buying the Bakers since it's easy to get in bars around here but I don't know how many more times I can walk past that sweet wooden box without hauling it up to the counter.

I pulled a Saz. Jr up from the bunker 2 weeks ago and still haven't opened it. Other lesser offerings have kept me distracted.

Killed off the last 1/3 of my first Centennial last night. I gotta say that it was easy and hard at the same time! Luckily, I have a little backstock bunkered and some more on the way.

Drained the last of the WR Sweet Mash. An OK whiskey but nothing remarkable. Having said that, I hope master distiller Chris Morris continues to experiment.
