We haven't done one of these in a while so let's see what's out there.

I usually have three to six open bottles.
That's not a lot compared to a lot of people.
But now I have 14 open bottles which is a lot for me.
I opened special bottles starting Thanksgiving and now through the Christmas Holidays.
These should keep me warm and comfy this Winter, or most of it.

Easiest Question I've ever had to answer.

I just unpacked my sideboard and opened my first bottle in the new house.

Its and ETL "Barrel of the Year"

Perfect!!!

Hey Ed, I have to say, your avatar is top notch! Is it the Christmas globe?:lol:

Looks like what I wanted to do with my Christmas lights when I started that project.

Well......I just updated my inventory. I have 37 open, and 41 in the bunker. I also have 32 50 ml bottles. Probably half of what I have open are bottles that I'll only have a drink from occasionally. :skep: I've been trying to finish off a few and bunker some of my favorites, but for some strange reason I keep getting side tracked. :slappin: Joe

Okay, I'm not proud of this as it points out a serious defect in my personality. It seems I open fast but drink slow. Also, I may suffer from adult attention deficit disorder which forces me to move on quickly leaving many tasks undone. Okay, I feel better.

75 open bottles but I swear I'm going to finish a couple soon.

Anyone want to help out?

In my record/music room, I have one shelf where I've omitted the jazz LPs and substituted whiskey bottles. My open bottles are all on that shelf, split about fifty/fifty between scotch and bourbon. The current line-up:

Scotch:

1. Highland Park 10 (silk in a glass)

2. Springbank 10 (similar in balance to Highland Park, but a tad peatier)

3. Aberlour A'bunadh (just got this for Christmas, it tastes very close to Macallan Cask Strength)

4. Glen Rothes 12 (Signatory Vintage)

5. Glen Scotia 12 (gotta have all my Campelltown bases covered)

6. Caperdonich 11 (Signatory Vintage)

7. Ardbeg 10 (this bottle hasn't wowed me)

8. Lagavulin 16 (the classic smoky Islay)

9. Laphraig 15 (more balanced than the 10)

Irish:

1. Bushmill's 10 (a regular pour, it's liquid candy)

2. Knappogue Castle 1995 (I like it because it tastes just like Bushmill's!)

Bourbon:

1. Sazerac 18 (awesome stuff, rarely poured but always savored)

2. George T Stagg (a little too strong, if truth be told)

3. Pappy Van Winkle 15 (right now, my only open wheated bourbon)

4. Wild Turkey Rye (Maryland rye, late seventies vintage)

5. Wild Turkey RR 101 (my regular bourbon pour until the bunker runs dry)

6. Old Grand Dad 86 (National Distillers bottle)

7. Dickel No. 12 (different, and always drinkable)

8. Henry McKenna's single barrel (my only open Bardstown pour)

9. Rock Hill Farms (I can't stand the bottle stopper)

10. I.W. Harper 15 (I was able to bunker a bunch of this, and drink it regularly as my 80 proof pour)

11. Old Forrester Birthday Bourbon (only about one shot left of this, though)

Right now I've probably got a few too many open, and most are dusties:

Old Weller Antique from around 1991
Weller Centennial (Louisville label/BHC)
OCPR (BHC)
Old Charter 10 (Louisville label - I don't get this whiskey at all. It tastes pretty good, but it smells terrible, sort of like hay that's started to rot. Putting the glass to my mouth is somewhat traumatic. But again, it's really quite tasty once it gets in my mouth.)

Old Forester BIB (dimpled bottle from the late 80's)
Old Forester 86 (late 70's, I think)
Old Fitz BIB from around 1981 (Thanks again, Greg!)
Beam Black circa ~1979
Antique from Athertonville, 6/80 from the 80s
Old Pogue
Woodford
WT RR101
WTKS
WT Rye
WT 8-year (Delicious, but the bottle confuses me: it's a liter in the current export trade dress, with Japanese writing on the back, but I bought it in a dinky little Chicago liquor store. No idea how it got there.)
Yellowstone 86 proof from Louisville
Pikesville Rye
Mellow Corn BIB

That's way too many open bottles...I'll consider this thread an intervention that I need to start knocking some of them off.

I've read the old Bernheim plant had notorious quality control control in the fermentation, to the point they rebuilt the distillery.

The description you give is pretty familiar. I've usually had good luck with Charter, but very hit and miss with Harper. It's a crap shoot.

Ah, I'd actually read that before but failed to put two and two together on my own stock of Charter. Thanks for helping solve this riddle for me, Roger. Every time I cracked one of these bottles, I'd get confused on how the OCPR of the same era could be so delicious while the 10 YO was, well, smelly.

:crazy: Um...well...it's now 82. Just opened an OGD 114. Kick, you still need to get to Bardstown. They'll be 82 bourbons on that Gazebo table that you've never even heard of!! It's the most amazing thing you've ever seen.
82 is a fair amount, but I know there are open bars striding along SB.com that dwarf that. There's one in New Hope that would make you faint!! I about did when I saw it. Then, there's the ones in Houston, Louisville/NYC/Shenzhen, Baldwin, Nashville...Never seen these, but I can imagine.
But, if there's no place else to go, I'll host the party!!

*Note: Bars featuring at least 10 untried bourbons must provide at least an 8 hour lay over.

WOW!!!.......I am no where close. In fact, I fear to open too many.....not enough space and I am too good at hiding things from myself. No telling what will be found around the house someday when I am gone.

If by chance the bunker ever goes belly up, I do have cousins in GA that I could tell the wife I am going to visit at any point in time you are open for company!

Hey, don't forget that tinge of week old sweat socks!! :D Alas, I have only 1 bottle left of that delicious juice, as the last bottle met it's demise in Bardstown. Killed by the Great Dane with a record toss of 23'-7"!!...:cry: My last bottle will remain untapped. Only to be opened when proper guests come to visit. (This should pretty much guarantee that everyone bypasses ATL, while on their way to Florida!:D) Ahhhh, Bourbon Supreme...Makes JBW seem like Pappy 15. Heck, it makes piss seem like Pappy 15!! :)

Joe, I was thinking of deviating my route to go through Atlanta when I saw your list of open bottles. But your comment about Bourbon Supreme tells me to take the direct route. You're a great guy and I'd love to visit, but not if I have to drink cow piss or Bourbon Supreme! Guess I'll just wait and tilt a glass with you In Bardstown.

I had to resurrect this post, because right now I have such an unusual selection open for my taste...it's eclectic and heavy on the wheat side, but that's the beauty of having so much stuff to choose from coming at you from so many different angles -- some of these are smaller bottles or gifts or shares:

Four Roses 120th Anniversary;
Pappy 20yo;
Wild Turkey American Spirit;
Woodford Reserve Sweet Mash;
Bernheim Original Wheated Whiskey;
ORVW 10/107;
an old Rebel Yell (cinnamon) liqueur, from 'real' Glenmore days';
Ezra Brooks 90;
VOB 90;
misc. other liquors.

The last two bourbons noted essentially are the current, 'house' bourbons, with which I'm generally mixing diet ginger ale.

About six weeks or so ago I realized my bar was overcrowded with open bottles of bourbon (I think it was about 23 at the time). I made a concerted effort to finish off bottles and free up space.

Now I'm up to 31.... I surrender!

Well, after taking a quick inventory, the totals are in. By my addition I have forty two open and sixty one in the bunker. Finally broke the 100 bottle mark. :woohoo: I also have forty 50 mls, but I don't count them. Joe

That's a nice cross section of bourbons you have there. I have more open now than I had 6 months ago....somewhere around 40+. The nice thing is my open bottles consist of bottles from most distilleries spanning a couple of decades.

I don't get any oldies around here or as they say "dusty bottles" but I do like to get today's fav's before they become dusties.
I have a few more that I want to open but I am going to thin this herd out first.

Man, I've sort of painted myself into a corner lately by only having open a lot of nice bottles that I don't want to finish off too quickly, but also bottles that I didn't end up not really caring for. Since I only have 10-12 bottles open at any given time, it's been a challenge to find a pour recently . . . here's what I've got:

EC12 (this bottle was funky and has been relegated to "cooking" status)
Dant BIB (I thought I would try this one again, but won't in the future)
Wathen's SB (this one's only ok, but I'll go to it without guilt)
Woodford's (ditto this)
Julio's SB BT (opened a 1.75 last week and have made a huge dent!)
Julio's OWA (which I have plenty more of, but always like to follow with . . .)
Lot 'B' (over $50 and I wanna save it)
WLW '09 (I'll go there, but not too often)
VSOF (S-W ghost whiskey)
Handy '09 (this bottle has been going too quick)
WT8yr (current, won't get it again until the in-laws visit CAN)
WTKS '07 (been loving this, truly I will cry when its gone)
VWFRR (I've been milking this one since May)

Anyway, the moral of the story is to keep more reliable everyday pours around, rather than experimenting so much . . . or get a bigger cabinet :grin:

Joe,
I know how you feel.

Someday one of us will buy into a bar and stock its 'specialty' section with their bunker. It'd probably be the best way to recoup the investment of all those bottles (especially the open ones).

I visited a bar in Vegas called the Freakin' Frog that had a 'Whiskey Attic' that had formerly been a club but now seems to be the collection of the proprieter. It totally looked like a bunker brought into a public setting. There was a wide selection, with many limited releases and dusties, and only 1 or 2 bottles of each one.

Pretty Mediocre.....

It is definately young and a bit sharp. Very little finish. The taste is not bad, just pretty average.

The Decanter is pretty though !!!!:grin:

Welcome, Rooster. Nice selection of ryes and malts. Where do you live?

Fort Smith, Arkansas...where else? :cool:

Interesting to see Old Overholt - a rye that doesn't get a lot of love here. So little, in fact, that I'm going to buy a bottle and try it. Have you liked it a long time, or is it something you're just trying?

And welcome to SB!

Overholt has been a standard for me for some time. I don't really get the off-putting taste that some people do in drinking it. I'm probably more won over by the nose (which I find rather refreshing) than anything else. It's not life-changing, but at around $14, I'll continue to restock empties.

Thanks for the welcome, guys.

No, thank God. I would store them in the crawlspace, but I don't want the rats to develop a taste for the good stuff.

No, I haven't opened it yet but I probably will next week. I'm using the cabinet under the sink as my liquor cabinet currently, and there's pretty limited space under there. Ah...the joys of a "cozy" home.

Theres always room for more. Whats a decent $30-40 opening purchase? Keeping in mind I live in a control state, and our selection is poor.

$30-40 opening?
If you want to open that high you can't go wrong with Four Roses Single Barrel, Wild Turkey Rare Breed and/or Old Rip Van Winkle 10/107.

I suggest OGD114. It is big, it is bad, and it will probably kick the shit out of ya. If you survive that, you'll be ready to go a few rounds with whatever you find on the shelf.

Back to the present. :grin: I've been trying my best to finish a lot of the open bottles I have. Seems I've been doing a good job as I've gone from 39 bottles open a couple of months ago, to 22 as we speak. :shocked: I know. It's a tough job but someone's got to do it. I will say that I've had a lot of help from my bowling team on Wednesday nights. I make sure Gary and I have some "good" stuff, and I bring the "so-so" stuff for the other guys on our team, and to share with a few others. :lol:

So here is my list as we speak.

1. Canadian Club
2. Crown Royal
3. Crown Royal Black
4. 08 FR Mariage
5. Gibson's 12 yr old Canadian Whiskey
6. Jack Daniel's
7. 1977 Old Crow
8. 1982 Old Fitz BIB
9. 1988 Old Fitz Prime
10. Tax stamped ND Old Taylor
11. 1970 Old Thompson Blended Whiskey
12. Kahn's Old Weller Antique
13. Pappy 15
14. 2010 Parker's Heritage Collection
15. Wild Turkey 8 101 Export
16. Wild Turkey Russell's Reserve 10/101
17. Wild Turkey Joe's Reserve 1:1 vatting of WTRB and WTRR 10/90
18. Willett's 5 yr old-Gonano
19. 09 BTAC William Larue Weller
20. Weller Centennial
21. Weller SR
22. WRMC Sonoma Cutrer

FWIW, I have opened a couple of bottles in the last couple of weeks. The Canadian's I keep around because that's what I was weaned on, and my son likes them. I still like them occasionally too for a change of pace. The JD is for when some guys I used to bowl with come over. The WRMC SC is because, well, we're all allowed a screw up once in a while. :grin: I'm not counting J.T.S. Brown BIB because it's the last pour from this bottle. Cheers! Joe
