I was flipping through channels and came upon a Jim Beam commercial on ESPN, called "The Girlfriend". It looks like it might be an Aussie release from a couple of years ago, now being shown in the US as part of a contest/promotion. Well done, Beam. We know what sells ;), and I'm a sucker for a good pitch!! :D I'll pick up a bottle tomorrow, simply for the good effort.

It is a pretty cute commercial, even my wife got a chuckle from it.

I'm hoping to get down under sometime, every Aussie I know is just incredibly good company.

As I say to my Aussie friends, "Bidet! Let's slip another Ken on the Barbie!"

Cheers!

I've done a little research but not nearly enough, there are always plenty of new specimens out there to discover.

I didn't care for it. Don't get me wrong, the chick's hot, and it is mildly amusing, but it isn't what I expect from a bourbon advertisement. There's nothing wrong with a little T & A but let's see more whiskey. Maybe have her hold a bottle or something. I find advertisements where you can't tell what the heck it is an add for until the very last to be annoying.

I record everything on two dual DVRs and fast forward though the commercials. I'd stop to watch a whiskey add but why stop to watch this chick? I mean she's hot but it isn't "girls gone wild" hot. OK, I might stop once to watch it but that's it, plus, like I said its annoying that you don't know what it is an add for till the end. I wouldn't be persuaded to buy Jim Beam by this add, if anything, I'd hold my annoyance against Beam and buy something else.

I can confirm that the series (there are three) did originate in Australia.

The first batch of Beam TV commercials (launched a couple of years ago) were typical "whiskey" commercials, in that they showed barrels and played up heritage. Those were really atypical for Beam, whose advertising has generally been more lifestyle-oriented, and which is part of why Beam was successful when the rest of the industry was dying out. They didn't do whiskey advertising, they did beverage advertising.

This is a return to what has always worked for Beam in the past. If you think about it, it could be a Bud Light commercial, and that's the point.

Ok, if this chic was to say something like "I buy him a bottle of (insert your favorite bottle here) every week, no matter the price, and I drink it with him" I would be sold....and I would be moving.

How many of you are willing to pay more for your bourbon...just to watch that commercial? Not I.

Beam is already the best selling bourbon in the world, isn't it? They don't need us to be successful.

I got email yesterday announcing the contest. I was wondering what the commercial looked like. I think there are a couple more.

Yep. I guess that's why I didn't like it. My favorite beer commercials are the Sam Adams advertisements.

You raise a good point. Spirits marketers, even big brands like Daniel's and Beam, have tiny ad budgets compared to the big beers. That's why they have to try to generate talk, anything to get more bang for the buck.

Oh and, by the way, people who think advertising is bad because it makes products more expensive are Communists.

And here I thought that I bled UT Burnt Orange???

Chuck, do you have any rough numbers to compare a large brewer and a distillers ad budget?

The difference would be at least a factor of ten, maybe more.

Yes, or at least redistributive socialists who see themselves as the defenders of the proletariat against the so called "machinations" of the bourgeoisie.

I will say that...as much as they advertise their product...is equal to the amount of effort I stay away from their product. So, hows that for bang for your buck in advertising dollars, Beam?

Give me one of the little guys. They make better bourbon anyway.

It's not Communism...that would be state owned bourbon distilleries. I just don't need someone to tell me which bourbon to drink. Maybe, others do?

I'm suspicious of anything that is seems over-hyped. Movies, consumer goods, you name it. It smells like a generous advertising budget is being used to overcome an inferior product. Its not always the case, but I find it a good rule of thumb.

It has always seemed to me that the more the advertisement investment, the less the desirability of the product. Maybe some inverse ratio there, but I'm not smart enough to figure it out.

Beam needs to find a team of horses... and a red wagon (tongue-in-cheek). BB
