I just posted a response to the "WBAYD? Winter '08/'09" and I just realized we made it to Spring!
So we can start anew.

Right now I am having a W L Weller Centennial The Premier Group private bottle, neat.

My efforts to clear out opened bottles were slightly frustrated this weekend. Tonight, my neighbor brought over a Michters 10 yo SB to drink while watching the Land's End Stakes. The whiskey was surprisingly thin and uninspiring and my horses finished out of the money.

Earlier today, I succombed to taking home a ORVW 10 yo. Haven't seen one of these on the shelf recently.

Having a little Makers Mark this afternoon. It has been a year or more since I have had any... I still like it however now that I have broadened my horizons a bit, I find that I don't care for it as much as I once did.

I have tasted a wider variety of fine bourbons over the past year or so than I had previously tasted in all of my life.

Experience does make for a more interesting perspective.

I bought a house earlier this month, and I'm a middle-class, workaday government employee (teacher) -- so you know I'm being cheap while I buy hanging plants (3 today, plus a potted bush!), shelf liner, and a new refrigerator (Whirlpool -- water and ice in door, side-by-side, under retail, but still a LOT OF MONEY!).
All that said, I'm enjoying -- with store-brand diet ginger ale -- some green-label Evan Williams.
One of the tenets -- it think I've been around long enough, and have enough posts, to assay 'tenets' (Chuck, check me on this!) -- of SB.com is that 'good whiskey is good whiskey'.
Now, mind you, I have some Stagg, Stitzel-Weller, single-barrel (hand-selected, by me and others), and limited-edition bourbon in the house. But, green-label Evan Williams IS good, basic bourbon! I'm enjoying it well enough.
We can't always be exceptional, you know.

Hey Oscar. It was an export-only bottling that they stopped making about 4-5 years ago -- mine's from Japan, though I never bought one there when they were more easily found.

It's good, though I actually think I prefer the 95-proof black wax that was available in the same markets at the same time -- possibly a little older? More robust and flavorful than the standard red wax, but not nearly as rich as the ORVW15 I was drinking before it!

ERSB 10/90, Julio's Angel's Share bottling. Weller Centennial Premier Group bottling. Weller SR, Everett's bottling. Decided to try some of my store single barrel bottlings tonight. It was a Monday for sure. A really bad Monday. Hopefully some good bourbon will soothe the soul. Joe

Fresh bottle of ERSB here, too, Joe.

This bottle has none of the mustiness of the last few bottles I've had (I actually like that). The color is a little darker and the flavors are deep and rich. It reminds me a lot of the ER101 I've had, at a lesser proof. Why, oh why don't they make the 101 any more??!!

Here's to a better Monday. Hell, it's Tuesday already. Problem solved!

Cheers!

Cracked into my Baker's last night...I'm confused. Is this product overly filtered or something? It was very smooth, entirely drinkable and very approachable...but for the proof there didn't seem to be an awful lot going on. Maybe I was just expecting a bit more punch flavour-wise?? Taking the price into account, unless something happens with some more air-time, this has gone straight to the do-not restock list. I can pick up MM at half the price for a similar experience.

Went to bowling tonight. Sat out because of a bad hip. Had JB white and coke while watching my team mates kick ass.:woohoo: Took some samples with me for a couple of my team mates and another friend to try. Lot B, Pappy 15, and Pappy 20, along with some Weller SR. A great night was had by all. I am winning over some bourbon converts. It was a great time for an informal tasting of sorts, in a very unlikely venue. Lot B was all the rage. Joe

PS. As a side note, for some strange reason, the bowling alley manager (the owners son) by chance asked me what bourbon I'd like to see stocked in the bar. "Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus." All things considered, I told him maybe BT or Weller SR. This place is a younger hang out where most people wouldn't know top, from middle, from bottom shelf bourbons anyway. Goes to prove, you just never know.

Ok, tonight I'm drinking something weird. I purchased a bottle of Forty Creek Barrel Select. Frankly, I think it's overrated - reviewers spoke of it very highly but I find it a little bland. I know, it's Canadian, but there are some out there that I do like, e.g., Wiser's 18 yo is outstanding.

I recently opened up a bottle of Rittenhouse Rye BIB and it's everything I love in a whiskey.

I was looking at the not-empty bottle of Forty Creek and wondering what I should do with it (I have lots of other things to drink that I like much more) and on a whim I decided to do a Gillman and mix them. It worked! It made a very interesting, complex and pleasant blend that I'm going to have again. It's got some spice, a little wood, bananas, vanilla.

I did a 1:2 mix, Ritt to 40 Creek.

In honor of a trusted source, I'm enjoying a pour of OGD 114

Having some Ritt BIB -- tastes like a pine tree.

Virgin 7 yr 101. If you've lately been disapointed in WT 101, and can get your mitts on this one, you'll do yourself a favor by picking it up. Or, you can go with the Old Ezra 7 yr 101. Same thing.
I need to arrange a trip to Alabama, so I can get another bottle.

Having some Ritt BIB also.

I'm getting ......pudding! Seriously though I like his stuff now.

I like it, too. I have, however, decided that it needs ice and/or water . . . I almost invariably prefer my whiskey neat, but this stuff needs augmentation.
The water seems to eliminate the juniper/pine flavor.

The taste I had from someone else's bottle seemed much richer than what I've been drinking. The water definitely softens it up and (yes . . .) brings out the flavors. There seems like a good amount of barrel in the finish, too, which I appreciate.

Lately I've just been having a lot of WT101 in hot toddies - it's about the only thing that gives me a respite from this cold I can't shake...I still don't have my voice back after losing it on Sunday.
