A Terrible Glory: Custer and the Little Bighorn by James Donovan
I have not read this book but it looks like a pick up:
June 25th, 1876
"Reno, fortified with liquid courage from a small keg of whiskey, panicked during the initial attack on Sitting Bull’s camp. He ordered a retreat without commanding buglers to sound recall and never sent a messenger to Custer informing him of the repulse."
I guess the liquid courage led to liquid cowardice and /or foolishness.

Some of the Sioux claimed to have found large amounts of whiskey...probably typical supply of the times.

Hard drinking was common...one account:
1868 troops under General Sheridan -
On a four hour trip 11 men consumed 5 gallons of whiskey.
