Well it's time to turn the page from Spring to Summer...I'm doing so by picking up a BOTM...Russell's Reserve! I haven't had the pleasure of tasting this before so I'm looking forward to getting to know Mr. Russell. Hopefully this is the start of a beautiful relationship!

Counting your chickens a bit prematurely, no? The bottle isn't even in the same county as you and you're counting it as purchased??

I polished off my Wednesday to-do list in record time and decided to leverage the remainder of my day off with a trip east on I-90. It was a successful trip as I grabbed a Pappy 20, a Lot B, and a WTRB on closeout for me along with a baby Saz for a fellow SB'er.

A case of Yuengling beer also jumped into the trunk for the ride home. Now I'm ready for summer.

Gentlemen et al

First post on this forum, although lurking for quite some time....So I'll jump right in with unopened portions of lot b, phc, and gts 08 hazmat to start....

Currently enjoying ec18, 4rsb and trying to push the wrfg on unsuspecting folks...

Seems a good start to the summer!

So, what exactly do you have against the "unsuspecting folks"?

Hhhmmmm...Good question. Am I being an unruly host? The four grain was my first high dollar purchase a few years back when I thought high dollar = superb drink. After a few tastes of the "goods" I just cant/dont/wont enjoy the wrfg.

I'm still a bourbon apprentice but quickly approaching journeyman, and my palette knows what it likes and doesn't. Will be making my first visit to the kbf this fall, as Im just over the border in OH and cant wait!!!

Picked up a Pappy 20... for a price I couldn't refuse.
Also got a bottle of 05 (I believe) OGD114.

OGD had a bad cork... went back and 3 other bottles from 05 had junk floating in them... an 04 seems great though.

I passed up a bottle of 2006 BTAC Eagle Rare.

I had a very nice haul on my trip to NY, but very nearly paid the ultimate price for it . . . here are pics of the bottles I picked out and the remnants of the car that I was driving when blindsided by a runaway pickup . . .

most are just things I can't get around here, but at least one is a bonafide dusty:

2 WLW '08, WT Rye101, Fighting Cock, '04 1849 Fitzgerald (it said "Wood Aged" & all the other bottles said "Charcoal Filtered"), Cabin Still, Noah's Creek & a 1990 OHH BIB with a faux tax stamp . . .

I always worry when going to the liquor store about being in a wreck and having the bottles break all over as I drive an SUV that doesn't have a trunk. That it would smell like a distillery and the cops would then place the blame of the accident on me and arrest me. I put the bourbon as far back in the vehicle as possible.

Andy I'm glad your OK I hope the other guy had insurance:hot:

They recently began selling 4R1B here in Houston, and today I decided to get a bottle of it. While I was there I discovered that they are now selling Rittenhouse too (they've had the Ritt 21yo, but none of the others), so I picked up a bottle of the Rittenhouse BiB. I've been harping on my local GrogShop and they finally got a couple of cases of Dickel No.12 in today after being out for nearly 8 weeks or more (they are being rationed by the state liquor control). I grabbed myself 4 bottles for the bargain price of $13.99 ea. Now I can be sure not to run out in case of another drought up here -- that was a long time. While I was out I saw that Weller Special Reserve was on sale for $10.99 so I had to grab myself one of those, too . . . deal was so good I almost bought two, but I had one bunkered already.

Today I was in an area of town that I don't go often, so I checked a couple of stores and ended up with 3 dusties:

Private Cellar - faux tax strip, 90 proof, no date. It was cheap ($7.85), so I got it for science.

Walker's Deluxe - tax strip, 86 proof, bottled in '84, from Peoria Ill. It too was cheap enough to give a try ($8.99), for science.

Old Weller 107 - 375ml, Louisville, faux tax strip, bottled in '91. Not exactly cheap ($12), but no problem as I love this stuff and wish that they had more.

Does anyone know anything about these older Private Cellar and Walker's Deluxe bottles, is it any good?

Since it is on sale for $10.99 currently, Weller Special Reserve is the second cheapest bourbon in Maine right now (after Ten High which is $9.49 & still KSBW here).

Because of that and because I'm always afraid they're going to get wise and raise the price on me ($12.99 regular here!) -- I bought 3 more bottles today . . . I should have enough WLW SR to last quite a while -- 5 in the bunker.

I did the same not too long ago. I have 8 in the bunker that I paid $12 for out the door. I keep seeing prices on the SR go up and up so I thought I ought to put some away.

I'm not in love with it but for $12 it's fine.

Gus, for me Walker's Deluxe has been hit or miss, but when it's good, it's very good. I have had three Peoria bottles, and loved two of them.

Private Cellar: is it from Owensboro? If so, you'll be very happy with it, I think. It's very good, rich and robust, with a good dose of spice and a lingering finish.

Which border? Hopefully not a US border. Now you'll need a passport or an enhanced driver's license, but you can go to a Windsor duty free return to the US with liquor by declaring it paying the tax approximately $3.00/liter and being subjected to a customs search. The dogs will go through your vehicle. If you don't declare, you're in big trouble.

Have you had any problem bring alcohol from Indiana to Michigan?

No, I haven't. There's nobody who actually checks that. Plus, I still don't see how Michigan's liquor importation laws are not a violation of the commerce clause, I really don't.

Anyway, we were going from NY to MI, so we had to cross the border twice. so were worried about bringing american stuff into Canada and the Canadian stuff into the U.S. Luckily, we made it thru w/o having to pay anything.

Is the big Al's in reference to a real person?

Not quite sure. I thought maybe it was Al Capone
or some other shady figure. The photo looks like
some kinda old time car dealer. He's holding some
paper in his right hand can sorta make out the
word "Belmont" (racing form ?).

There's text alongside the image that reads:

Simply went to go buy wine for my mother-in-law. Happened to see Weihenstephaner Weisbier on the shelf, so picked it and then, several other brews up....Then meandered down the bourbon lane, and grabbed an OGD 114, that for some reason I felt a need for. It was actually yesterday, but I nabbed a bottle of OGD BIB on the way to FishFest (a cancer benefit music festival in Wisconsin Rapids.) They had beer but if you wanted cocktails or whatnot you had to bring your own fixins. So I figured it was a good time to try the OGD BIB as I had never had it and I was looking for something $15 or so to take up to share. It's a good solid bourbon for the money.

In these economic tough times, I've decided to stop drinking all of my KSBW that costs more than $20 a 750ml, and only save those pours for special occasions.

So I figured that means I'll be drinking WT101 and EWB pretty regularly...

...that is until I did the math and figured out that actually the cheapest, decent quality KSBW to found here is the 1.75 liter bottle of MM at CostCo for $34.00. It worked out to $0.51 a ml, whereas EWB 750 ml at $9.00 was approx $0.83 a ml.

After figuring that out, I was able to justify to my wife that we actually saved money by buying the MM at costco instead of the 9.00 EWB at Wal Mart. It was neat to use the favorite female tactic in reverse...

And now I've put my 8 hours in today and it's time to reward myself with some bourbon shopping and/or drinking.

You sir, have shown exactly why I always sucked at Math!

I divided 1750 ml by $34 when I should have divided the 34 by 1750...

...so the question remains: is the difference between MM and EWB worth .74 of a cent?

I told him about my Turkey collection and said I was lucky to have some that I did.
In 1955, a year after he started work at WT he said they came out with a commemortaive bottle that he didn't get and now wishes he did.
I got a bottle of WT Kentuckey Spirit at the gift shop for him to sign.
Whilst talking about the Turkey collection he said they had the Wild Turkey Wedgewood Crystal their so I got that to.
Empty and sealed with the additional stopper, they no longer allow spirits in Wedgewood.
It comes in a suede box that is satin lined. Mr Russell said it looks like it is in a coffin.

Took my first trip to the Party Source in KY yesterday and made some new additions:

• Old Weller Antique 107
• Henry McKenna Single Barrel (Bottled In Bond)
• Four Roses Single Barrel
• Old Grand Dad 114
• Old Forester 100 (75th anniversary repeal of prohibition commemorative bourbon with Glencairn glass)

The Party Source is fantastic! I had no idea it was just across the river or I would've went years ago. Though surprisingly I couldn't seem to find any Pappy Van Winkle or Old Rip Van Winkle. Do they ever stock those?

Oh well, I finally got my hands on a bottle of Four Roses to see what all the hype is about. I hope I got a good single barrel bottling because the guy that worked there steered me away from the small batch stuff. I've also been wanting to try the Henry McKenna single barrel for many moons now and I'm stoked about scoring one of those too.

Picked up a bottle of ETL. The price went up a couple bucks since the last time I bought it, which was about 4-5 months ago. It'll be worth the extra cost, if this bottle is as good as the last.

They stock the Van Winkles when they are (periodically) available. You'll usually find them locke din the separate glass "premium" cabinet since they typically limit purchases to one per customer per visit.

Also be sure to check out their bourbon tastings. I went to a great one last Saturday featuring Craig Beam of Heaven Hill.

I just found out about that specific tasting last Thursday and it was long since sold out! :smiley_acbt: We thought about going anyways to see if there were maybe some empty slots, if somebody couldn't make it or something but we just decided to go on Sunday and keep an eye on their schedule.

So how did it go? Taste anything that really impressed you?

I should also tell a sad story about our dinner at Buckhead Mountain Grill just across the street. We get in there and order our drinks. The waitress brings me a nice big pour of Booker's (neat) and my girlfriend's iced tea. We place our dinner order and we both get up to go to the restrooms to wash our hands. When I get back to the table it had been bussed and emptied (along with the glass of ultra-premium-top-shelf Bourbon). The waitress was NOT happy with the bus boy. I half-way wondered if he actually threw away that Booker's or if he knocked it back himself!!

Yeah, we got an advance tasting of the PHC 50th Anniversary bottling (http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12605) that's coming out later this year. They also included the PHC 2008 27 yo.

The fourth quarter schedule is coming out in a week or two. Jay (the spirits guy at PS) says they are trying to line up a tasting with Parker Beam. They'd be some great stories there!

Nice...I have one in the bunker and I'm contemplating adding another...waiting for the 15% off weekend at Binny's before I do that though. I do plan on picking up a couple this weekend though...on the list is ERSB, RR 10/90, WLW 12YR, and ETL! All of these will be bunkered but I'm still gitty with excitement! :)

Well I have been pretty well behaved this summer and instead of buying many new bottles, I spent some quality time with a bunch of open bottles that I already had on hand.

Well now my open bottle selection is looking a little poor so I stopped by The Keg in Clarksville today and looked around for a bit before deciding on the Willett Family Pot Still Reserve.

nothing too fancy, but it was payday so I rolled home with:

Knob Creek, Old Fitz BiB and Eagle Rare 10/90.
I gotta keep the basics in my bar.

I am also out of WT101, WTRR90(101 if I can find it!), MM(which I have replaced lovingly w/ OWA107 maybe forever...), Dickel#12 & BT, which I also usually keep as standards.

Tomorrow I will hopefully pick up some OGD114, I am still virgin to the 114 version and am dying to experience the "burnt brownie"...
and I am very curious to try the Beam Distiller sries 7yr 90roof @ $19.99+tax
(might it be a better pour than the Knob..?
Is it the same mash as white/black/Knob?)

Cheers!

BTW: for the buck; I have not found a better pour than Old Fitz BiB @ $14.99+tax.
(any suggestions to top it?)

Yesterday I found a FR1B for $29.99, which is the cheapest I've seen it since they started selling it here in Texas, so I picked it up. He only had one on the shelf, so I asked him if he got a whole case or what, and he said the distributor guy only put one on the shelf as a 'trial', and maybe that's why the price was a little lower. In the few other places I've seen it, it was not less than $35.

Today I was passing by a familiar store with a pile of dusty small bottles behind the counter, impossible to try and look at and they won't let me look through them, but they occasionally sort through and put some on the shelf. Since the last time I was there, they had put an 8yo OGD 86 200ml out. It wasn't exactly cheap ($4.69), but the little thing looked scared and lonely so I rescued it.

Picked up four original bottles of Gentleman Jack (17.99), a bottle of EWSB 1993 (29.99), and a bottle of RR 10/90 (24.99). They had a lot of old WT there...101 and Rare Breed specifically...the RB said WT-01-99 on the neck...does that mean that it was bottled in 99? The also had some that said WT-03-03 so I'm guess that is the case...does anyone know? • Four Roses Single Barrel
• Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel
• Old Grand Dad 114
• W.L. Weller Antique 107
• Fighting Cock
• Old Fitzgerald BIB (1 Liters were on sale for $14.99!!!)
• Rittenhouse Rye BIB

A few of these were doubles of the ones I bought Sunday. I wanted to have some backups (especially Party Source's FRSB bottling).

Thanks to the local casino I've developed a craving for Parker's Heritage 127.4, and was lucky enough to find two bottles I remembered sitting on a shelf a year ago still without a home. I got one (a friend got the other), and a FR1B to keep me from getting into the Parker's immediately.

Said casino, in Shelbyville (IN), has a Makers Mark Bourbon Bar with mostly usual suspects on offer, but the Parkers at $9/2oz was a great deal and we were lucky that nobody else realized as much, because we went through all three of their bottles and didn't notice any missing between trips. They let us taste Makers white dog @90 proof and an 8yr old last time I went, so I kind of recommend the place if you're local- even though their blackjack tables are electronic.

Walked into an obscure, small time specialty liquor store in a hole in the wall location here in Honolulu...and was stoked to find they had besides all the typical, mass marketed KSBW's, they had some EC12 and EC 18!

The 12 was $28.00, the 18 was $66.00. OH how I wish I could have spared the $66.00....

...but I'm still happy to finally get the chance to try some EC12!

Oh, and this place also had some Old Fitz BIB, Overholt Rye, Rebel Yell Reserve and WTKS....stuff I've never seen anywhere else here in HI.

Soon, I willl add those to the bunker...

Nice! Can they special order most everything or is HI a control state?

I would definitely pick up the Old Fitzgerald BIB. Much better "wheater" than the Rebel Reserve in my book. Also much more affordable. I was lucky enough to score that 1 liter OF-BIB I bought last Friday for $14.99. Most of the Heaven Hill BIBs are a damn good bargain. JTS Brown and Rittenhouse Rye are also among my favorites in that lineup.

Thanks for the recommend, emu! The OFBiB was 24.99 here...but than I know everything in that store was over-priced. But, they do have KSBW and SMS that I can't find anywhere else in the State, so I guess it is worth the price.

They had JBB for 29.99!!!!!

Just down the street at the nearest grocery store, I can get that for $19 - $22

But they do have EC...something I've never seen anywhere else in the State, so I can't complain.

I don't believe HI is a control state...just a matter of demand. Bourbon is not a big market here....I do believe Tequila and Rum are far more popular here. It sucks, because we don't get a lot of variety on the store shelves...but in the bars, it's usually not bad, because the bourbon's are typically way less pricey and usually on special more often.

I've noticed that most liquor stores around here discard of the boxes or employees take them for personal use. I would suspect it's mostly the latter which kind of 'rubs me the wrong way'. Rittenhouse had as I suspected no DSP number on the label due to the fact that it’s no low that say it must have here. I like most things about American whiskey, but I don’t like the tactic to put out as little accurate information as possible on the label.

When I found stuff on vacation in Florida, I just packed them in my suitcase. Put them in large zip lock bags, then wrapped jeans around them. Made it home with no problem. Joe Did you have to declare it when you checked your luggage? I didn't buy it today but you guys have me thinking I might need to make a trip back to pick it up...I have a couple 1792's in the bunker but I thought that a Ridgewood Reserve would be kinda cool to have. :)

You're good with up to five liters. Here's the TSA website. http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel Gotta be under 140 proof. No GTS allowed. Joe

Yeah saw that...I travel almost every week for work so I avoid checking bags at all costs...adds about an hour to my trip as I usually get stuck waiting forever for my bags. This one actually has me contemplating checking...it seems that they were pulled from the shelves in 2004 when the ruling went against them. It would be very cool to have one of these...although I would have to hid it from the drunks that frequent my bar! :D

I picked up a bottle of (I know it's not Bourbon) Jack Daniels Single Barrel but didn't notice until the lady at the register gave me my Ducks Unlimited leg band ( for the duck not me)that it was there Ducks Unlimited Edition.

I drank a bottle of Old Charter Ducks Unlimited and George Dickel Ducks Unlimited circa 1996. I later saw a full bottle of the George Dickel sell on E-bay for over $150. Considering it was an off bottle of Dickel and had some bad flavors, I started kicking myself for drinking it. But it looks nice in the shop with the rest of the bone yard of bottles.

I think I'm going to break down and pick up a bottle of Bernheim Wheat today. I've been wanting to try it for a long time but the price tag has kept me from doing so (around $40 in most local stores). For the same price I can score some of my very favorites but the pull to try it has gotten the better of me.
