Well it's time to turn the page from Summer to Fall...the colors on the trees are starting to change, the smell of nightly fires is in the air...

I started fall by picking up some ER 10/90 for the bunker...this is my go to bourbon right now...I could drink this stuff every day and be a happy guy.

Yeah, don't shortchange us on Summer, we still have until the 22nd.
We'll be shoveling snow soon enough!

Even though it isn't fall until next week, it's close enough to participate in this thread (grin).

I received a shipment today with a bottle of Elijah Craig 18yo bottled in 1990, nestled in with two bottles of Midleton Irish and a bottle of Jameson's Limited Reserve 18yo. I also picked up a bottle of Glenrothes 1975 30yo scotch.

I plan to round out my VanWinkles this weekend and stop spending on Irish Whisky and Scotch for awhile (grin).

After going close to 2 months without making a purchase (edit to correct: I did buy a few scotch bottles on sale 2 weeks ago, but they don't count in a bourbon thread <G>), I have lapsed back into my buying ways again. I picked up a bottle of the Jefferson Presidential Select this weekend (and after tasting it tonight will be putting in an order for a few more bottles) and today when stopping by the local store just to talk with the spirits guy about how he liked the U2 concert (he went Saturday, we went Sunday) I noticed that he had the new BTEC on the shelf so I had to buy a set. Probably will not be my last bottle this week since I'm sure a few new bottles will find their way home during KBF.

I like Fall better then summer so I am posting here.
Picked up a ETL as a back up and a bottle of OGD BIB as a replacement and meant to grab a bottle of Fighting Cock because it had been a while but when I got to the counter I had a bottle of Charter 101 in my hand so I went with that.

Silly me, fall is so much better than summer.

Well it seems my spot with all the Weller Centennial was discovered by someone, but I did manage to grab one more bottle, seem to be all gone now.
They are trying to order me a certain beer this week, so when I stop in again I'll check and see if they've filled the void in their bourbon isle with anything.

Out of curiosity, is the old Baker's Bourbon any different than the new bottlings? I saw a bottle has appeared on the shelf in the store next to me.
Looked like this one http://www.bourbonenthusiast.com/for...isplaybottling (http://www.bourbonenthusiast.com/forum/DBvd.php?id=144&task=displaybottling)
Listed for $36.

While looking for some OWA, the local ABC manager called me and said she had one bottle of Stagg sitting on the back shelf so I picked it up for a friend whose been looking for one. She also informed me that there were only 4 bottles of OWA left in the State of VA. Fortunate for me, they were at a store on the way home after work.

Looks like BT created the feeding frenzy by decontenting their product that Beam tried to create for Knob Creek with empty bottles and free t shirt gimmicks.

Methinks where KC has annoyed some it'll blow over, but with Antique it may be a last fling before the divorce. BT needs to start on the damage control, pronto.

I was just kidding anyway, I don't really have anything against scotch. I just couldn't resist. I think I will be picking up a new birthday bourbon in the next few days, but who knows. I was planning on going old bottle hunting this weekend, but it may or may not happen.

I'm tempted to lock this until it is officially here, but will let it slide since Scott did.

I made a run out to the store for Tommyboy38 today...picked him up bottles of EWSB from 1989 and 1990. I also found a bottle of Blanton's bottled in 1993 for $39.99...too good of a deal to pass up on even though I told myself that I was done buying for a while. This past weekend in Vegas really hurt my bourbon fund...it will take months to recover!:(

Stitzel Weller bourbon.

There was another Cabin Still but it got opened for immediate consumption. I was thinking about getting a mini barrel for these three, in hopes of adding some oak/complexity to the straightforward buttery almond flavor. It also needs some extra proof, so I may try vatting with something 100+ proof and see how that works out.

I guess I didn't buy enough bourbon at the KBF. Had to run to Milwaukee tonight after work. Stopped at a couple of places on the way home. Found a couple of steals at one place that I just couldn't pass up. I bought 2 bottles of WTRR 10/90 for $17.99 each, and a bottle of ER 10/90 for $20.99. There were a couple of WTKS pewter tops that I passed on at $46.99 each. Good selection at this place, but some of their prices were weird. I got good deals on the WTRR and ER, but they had a couple of things that were a bit high. WTRB for $39.99 was one. Wish I could have found the WTRB for $17.99 too. I may have vatted an entire bottle of the WTRB and WTRR together. :yum: Joe

Clay,
On Versailles Rd, next to the closed Dairy Queen is a liquor store called Thoroughbred Liquor...WTRB is $30, WTRR90 runs about $22. Prices are pretty good. Liquor Barn has it for about $32.

Haven't had much time with a family and a business to dusty hunt. Have tried a few locations here and there without much success.

2 JRPS 17 year
1 VW Lot B

I've never had a Rye before so I figured that I might as well start out with a good one. I'm kinda regretting it a little though as I had to chose between that and a GTS...I have one of those bunkered so I figured I might as well pick something else up.

I did, but I would, and have paid $35 a bottle. It is that much better than the current 101. I would take this over the ORVW 10/107 everyday of the week.

It a year you would be happy to pay $40 for them. Think about what you would pay for the ER 10/101. I like this juice better.

2008 125.3

2008 125.3
2007 117.9
2006 129.9
2005 121.9

If it's a proof other than these, it's the 2009.

The Weller is 134.8, and the Stagg is 141.4. Looks like they are both 2009, then.

Thanks for the reply and info, Joe.

Picked up another WLW 09 for the bunker. I think I will open one of them tonight. Unfortunately due to work bs I have to go in this weekend and I am not happy about it (but at least I have a job). So I may just go with something I know. I hate to go into an anticipated bottle while disgruntled.

Not bourbon, but I picked up a bottle of George M. Tiddy's Canadian Liqueur for a friend. My wife and I are going over to another couples house tomorrow for dinner and drinks, and my friend likes the stuff. I'm pretty sure he's out, and besides, it's cheap. Joe

After having tasted the NAS OWA the closest Woodmans got in I grabbed another for the bunker (my first taste of OWA, and it reminded me of the Everett's single barrel of SR but with more caramel and higher proof, but has some of those apple notes I really love, so I wanted more of that batch they got. There's half a dozen left yet.) There's some of the older OWA at the other Woodmans well on the other side of town, I might swing by there this week since I'll be doing some work at our other warehouse on that end of town. They have the Weller SR in the new bottle there too I think, it'll be interesting to see if the age statement is gone from that also.

I haven't gone whiskey hunting in well over a year -- and, frankly, I didn't do so today, though I ran across something to buy anyway.
9593
I stopped to visit a couple of liquor stores I hadn't been into for several years during a wandering, first-day-of-fall-break drive, not looking for anything in particular nor expecting to find anything in particular.
At one store, where I'd found a handful of gems previously, I finally grabbed off a Glen Ord 12yo single malt Scotch which I'd known had been there during previous visits. However, he was down to a single one with holiday packaging -- in this case, an additional 375ml bottle for no additional cost (the labeling's copyright was 1997). By the way, Glen Ord hasn't been imported into the U.S. for several years.
9592
Anyway, I've mentioned this bottling previously to dougdog, and would be glad for his -- or anyone else's -- thoughts on its desirability.
I sometimes think to look through Woodford Reserve stocks -- which otherwise don't really interest me -- in order to discover any remaining Lincoln Henderson-'signed' bottles. The only one in this store was an early Lot 27 liter, which I'd estimate was bottled c. 1999-2001 -- well before any pot-stilled whiskey made it into the batching. In other words, this is the WR that people remember when they claim today how good it is.:smiley_acbt:

Going SW tonight. Pappy 20 to start.....this one refreshes my memory of why I like the 15 better. Just a little too much wood for me. Then the 2005 KBS BOTY Weller 12. Now this is more like it. Somewhat delicate, but I don't mind having to study my whiskey to see what's in there. The trademark cottton candy is there. Very nice. Not my favorite of the four barrels we bought that year, but solid SW at 13 1/2 years old.

That's a great line, Randy, and a good lesson to some of the newer and less-experienced members here: a little patience and some conscious thought allows us to find premium bourbon in other than G.T. Stagg bottles. Many of the 'wowser', historic S-Ws I've found and sampled required some pondering and comparisons to taste memories.
I'm down to a singleton each of the '05 BOTY and Barrel 'C' from those four selections (well, three selections, and one accident!) -- since I've enjoyed several of each already, I'm inclined to let them be my sole shelf 'queens' into my old age or, at least, somewhat older age (next week?).

Yesterday, I found a liquor store that had two Jefferson PS and a half dozen Lot B Van winkle without the Julia(n) sticker. Wanted to buy one but could not justify it because another store is ordering BTAC for me.

Today I went to another store to pick up the JRPS I promised to a fellow board member and it was gone! Picked up an OGD 114 for good measure. This confirms my long standing suspicion that somebody else is in my area hunting bourbon. Long story, but somebody is in KC hunting and he's looking at the same bottles I am. Odds are, it's an SB member.

Today, I went to the store in question and picked up the two remaining JRPS and one Lot B. Hopefully my competition won't come to this store and discover that the JRPS is gone. If he does, I am confident he'll clean out the remaining Lot B. Otherwise I'll nab a couple each week until one is left. I will leave the last one for Mr X.

One day I am sure I'll meet this other bourbon nut. Can't wait! We'll have a ball!

What's up with that? The 2009 is all over California right now. I took home 3 GTS yesterday and today loaded up on another GTS, 3 WLW and 1 Handy. All $59.99 each. I was surprised to find the WLW, last year I had to order on-line.

seven Wild Turkey 101 8 year decanters from 1978
a Beam 172 month 86 proof decanter from 1968
a Cabin Still Hilbillly decanter (SW juice)
a Kentucky Tavern 8 year straight Captains Decanter (Glenmore)

all full and sealed - Opened and taste done of the Turkeys --dark red very tasty and smooth - this juice is older than 8 years.

Lots of whiskey that I have been looking for a long time came to me today. 5 * ORVW 10/107 and 6* WTRR 101. The Russell’s reserve is sold out years ago but I found one bottle at an online dealer left for a slightly higher price than when it was available some years ago. He offered to bay all of this whiskey he could find from other online stores in Germany and sell it to me for his price. He clamed that the 6 bottle he came up with were the last in Germany. I don’t believe that but he did a hell of a good job.
Besides that I got one fernet branca and one green chartreuse.

That's very fortunate that you were able to purchase all those RR 101's from that guy. I hope you enjoy them. And five more ORVW's in the bunker should keep you in good whiskey for quite some time. Have you purchased any Weller 12 or OWA recently? The 2009 bottlings that I bought were very good.

I've had to slow the whiskey purchases due to an announcement at work yesterday that in appreciation of our continued dedication to the company, they will only pay us for 4 days a week starting Nov 1. Gotta love that reciprocity of loyalty shown by corporations these days.

That said, I picked up a WT Rye 101 and an Evan Williams black label 1.75. Couldn't pass it up for $18.99 (19.99?).

Yesterday the Whiskey Fairy delivered two stunningly beautiful PVW 15. I'm really excited about trying these and will do so soon.

On the upside I have a strong lead on a better job and another lead on some good side work. This will be a temporary and modest setback.

Good luck on the job lead. Make sure it's reasonably secure though, as the devil you know... My brother recently left a job he had for many years for greener pastures, only to be one of the very first to be let go six months later when things got tough for the company. Now he wishes he had the old job back.

Are these your first PVW15's? You're going to absolutely love them, I'm sure. By the way, how does one get a "whiskey fairy" to drop by their house? Do you have to sleep with any empty bottle under your pillow until they appear?

Thanks for your concern. A friend of 20 years is in a better position in this company and assures me that they have work for 2-3 years. The company I work for is likely to disappear in six months due to continued mismanagement. I could work for a competitor, but the industry is in decline and will be for a couple years. At this point, I have several options and over the next couple months will determine the best way to go. Today my dad asked why we work in jobs we don't like and offered to fund my dreams.....

LOL the Pappy Van Winkle fairy originates in one of the dry Western states which has an esteemed member on this board by some coincidence. I won't reveal his identity because I don't want to invite solicitors for this generous individual.

These are indeed my first PVW 15 bottles though I've fallen in love with recent Lot B bottlings and am a notable fiend for Wellers 107 (excepting 08 bottles). I have a PVW 20 from a few years ago I'm holding for my dad's 60th next June.

I got a parcel from an E-bay guy yesterday. I did win a WT 101 bottled 1981 for only 14 euros. As the low shipping fee of 13 euros vas the same for 2 bottles I did put in an low bid for a red Aalborg (Danish aquavit) and got that for 1 euro. The Turkey had a very reddish collar and I really look forward to taste it.
And by the way. Some people talk about the Mac Donald’s index to compare the price level between different countries. I use the shipping index and that indicate Austria to be a very cheap country.

I made it home in 2 hrs. but I stopped at a liquor store in Toledo and at the Jerky Outlet in Dundee, MI:grin:

Overheard at the liquor store: "Yeah, when a customer comes in here asking for a really good bourbon, I always tell them to get a bottle of Woodford Reserve. That's a really really good one."

Anyway, came home full of coffee and gravy with an American Spirit, a bottle of 4R Single Barrel BS 38-6L, Midnight Moon Corn Whiskey and something I couldn't pass up: Old Dan Tucker Diluted Kentucky Bourbon (at a robust 42 proof) from the good people at White Oaks Whiskey Co. of Cleveland, OH.

I had to drop my daughter at a skate party today. Turns out that the party was just down the street from the Fern Valley Liquor Barn... damn the luck!

I hadn't been in this store for a while so went in to look around and kill some time. BTW, I love this place!

I saw WLWSR a new bottle shape / design. Still wearing the age statement though. Also saw their OWA stock in the old bottle with the age statement and looked like they had a lot on hand. Only saw one bottle from the BTAC which was a Handy that they had behind glass. I didn't ask if they had any others.

I really didn't need anything but hated to leave empty handy. After all I had been fondling all of the bottles and figured I really should buy something. I had been telling a friend about how good some of the BIB's are so I picked up a VOB BIB as a gift for him. Pretty amazing that you can still get this for $11.99. It is one of the best values in the bourbon world!

Wathen's (bottled 9/5/08) for $26.49. This smells, tastes and lingers deliciously. Best Heaven Hill juice I've had.

Last Sunday, while Da Bears were being pounded, I fled to a liquor-monger where I had previously sighted a real tax stamped "1795 Bonded Beam" hiding out behind a glass case amongst old single malts. Upon closer inspection it's an 8 year old with the red ink on the stamp readable for the bottled date as fall 1970. It's in a funky cannon type bottle and negotiated a price south of what BTAC's are going for.

Bulleit. It shows the typically spicy (red-striped cinnamon candies) character of the fine products of Four Roses distillery, where I understand it is distilled for the owner of the brand. This particular bottle is slightly drier than some I recall from before and well-balanced. It drinks neat or with a cube very well.

Yeah, I grabbed myself one of those OGD 114s last week in Portsmouth, too ... $17.99 is hard to beat.
If you're serious about the BTAC bottles, though, you won't want to wait until Christmas, they're moving at a pretty good clip. Of course I know somewhere you might be able to sample some. ;)

I think I might actually have some free time during Thanksgiving break, I don't think I'll be working the whole week. If I can find the time to do some sampling that would be great. Could be just what I need to pull the trigger.

BTAC WLW 2008 When your lucky, your lucky.

I went to a store that I was in just 2 weeks ago. Whats new on their shelf? At still at the old price!

It was not there two week ago. Not the first time I frequented a store that suddenly had old or older stock.

I got 2 new style OWA's.

I got no problem with this new OWA. For $23 its a great deal.

I'll have to wait a few days and go back to the bottle after it's had some time to air.

The initial nose had that sort of band aid char that you get with scotch sometimes. But a bit of air and it's gone. Nice and smooth with a color nearly identical to Centennial. Reddish juice. Very smooth, but I'm not getting that heavy char mixed with bitterness that I got in 2 of the 4 OWA bottles I bought before.

It's got that nice backend burny heat that just lets you know it's there and finishes slightly dry.

I just picked up a new style OWA 7 107. I was wondering why it looked different. I wasn't aware of the bottle change. I've yet to open it, but I have some of the old stuff hanging around waiting for a comparison. When the time comes, I will post it.

It looks different, and it isn't "technically" OWA 7 107 anymore, the age statement is gone.
...although, currently most seem to think it's as good as, or better than, the last 7 107 bottling.

Yeah, we'll get Dr Entropy involved, too -- he has gobs of open BTAC, too (& other goodies). My wife does prenatal yoga on Tuesdays, so that's a good day for dramming. Let me know when you're around via PM.

Bought a GTS in KC today! It's sure been slow getting here but I finally have one and I can't wait to try it. I doubt the seal will survive this evening.

I left behind a Handy and a ER17.

Should have a half-case of Bourbon Crusade OWA heading my way tomorow. I swear, I don't have a bourbon (buying) problem. I can stop any time I want.

Stepped out today and corrected a lapse in my collection. I picked up a bottle of OGD 114 and a bottle of 1792.

While I was at it, I picked up a bottle of Pennsylvania Dutch eggnog - sorry Bettye Jo, I asked specifically for Evan Williams, but they don't carry it here. Phooey.

I ended up ordering again from Julio's as their supply of the private bottlings that I was looking for was getting really low.

I had Ryan ship me:
1 Four Roses Unfiltered Barrel Strength
2 Julio's OWA SB
1 Julio's Elmer T. Lee

In the last 24 hours I have spent my bourbon budget for a couple months. Last night I nabbed a GTS and fell in love with it. Today Ryan called to finalize the 6 bottles of OWA from the single barrel selection. Tonight I picked up 3 more GTS, and one WLW. I passed up another WLW, a 4R marriage, several Handy, several ER17, Saz 18, RHF, and others.

Why does every distiller release their special bourbon at the same time? If I ran 4Roses, mine would be in June so people who had dropped their coin in October had rebuilt the bourbon fund.

June Mariage's are very popular, I hear.

Finally got another bottle. Russel's Reserve for $25. Not the best price where I work, but I was thirsty after a long day and needed a new bourbon. I definitely liked my first pour.
