OK... I am sold. I am on my way back to Fry's to get 6 more bottles (with the flasks cause I can :D). I purchased a 5L medium char barrel and I will be adding a little age to my WT...

This is one cool site for barrel stuff....

Woodford Reserve Masters Collection - Seasoned Oak! An amazing whiskey. Tastes like a bourbon aged twice as long. Of course, the price was way up there too.

Tortured logic is tortured.

Solstice and equinox events are not like the new year where each time zone gets its own, so you were equally early in every bourbon market across the globe.

you know what they say, it's better to be early than late! and I can't think of anything better than to keep all of us warm during winter than bourbon.

$40 is the going price on RB in these parts.

The wife bought me a Woodford Reserve for Christmas . . . and gave it to me early, nice gal that she is. I've never had this before and have to say that I love it -- don't know why I've avoided it so long. To me it tastes exactly like a good bottle of Elijah Craig 12 or EWSB, which makes sense since that stuff was supposed to be B-F juice for a while. I was really surprised -- this goes close to the top of the list and makes me think twice about trying OF again.

Went shopping with Joshua last night, and it was a mostly unproductive effort. I nabbed a SB 4R for 29.99 and it was a gift pack so there were two glasses. Nabbed an 06 OFBB which I really wanted to compare to the 05 that I think is very good. The two are obviously different; somebody was looking for a different profile unless OFBB is the result of dumping barrels at random and seeing what happens. Also picked up a Lot B for another SBer.

The bottle I promised Joshua was gone when we made it to the store where I saw it. No worries, I made up for that by burning some steaks into flavorless jerky!

I've seen them around Chicago...they're selling for $29.99 IRRC. I opened one from the bunker and it is a really good pour...I haven't compared it to the Standard, Binny's, or Julio's bottling yet but I will! ;) I'm giving myself a pat on the back for making it this far into Winter without buying anything!

26.99 in Ellicott City, MD.

They had a whole shelf of ETLee, but only 2 in the back were 90th BDay. I only grabbed one, as I have a bottle of the regular ETLee at home. I shall compare them and get back to you all.

Grabbed a lone bottle of WLW'09 for $77. Not a great price, but it's set by OLCC and this will likely be the only bottle of it I see. BTAC is one of those "take it or leave it" propositions out here...and I usually take it.

I definitely notice (and am enjoying) the extra proof to this years version. Even with an ice cube it's pretty hot for a wheater. It's nice they don't release the same thing every year...kudos to BT

Thanks! It does have the blank tax strip, louisville label, and A976 written into the label. Trying to hold off on cracking it open, b/c if it's at least as good as the 2000 i just found over thanksgiving, it'll be gone in no time.

I took the 45 minute drive down to the South Loop Binny's and did a little bit of Four Roses Barrel Strength OESK and OBSK (spicy) tasting with Lost Pollito (Joe). I ened up prefering the nose of the OESK and the neat taste to OBSK. Then I cut them a bit with some water and I prefered the OBSK as extra Rye seemed to hold up a little better. I ended up going with a bottle of OESK and a VWFRR!

I finally found an ND Old Taylor the other day.
It was actually right under my nose at a store that I've been in many times but I just didn't know it because I didn't know what to look for (until I finally did some research of some past threads on the subject).

It's a liter bottle, and the label has the guy on the left and the castle on the right, both Frankfort & Clermont listed, 86 proof, 89 molded into the bottom of the bottle, and the neck has those ridges. I gather from my research that this is ND whiskey bottled by Beam (correct me if I'm wrong). I tried it, and it does in fact have a pronounced butterscotch flavor. The liter bottle was $10.99, which seems like a pretty darn good deal!

Handle of Old Fitz eighty proof for 19 bucks
Weller 107 for 19 bucks
Weller twelve year for 20 bucks
Four Roses Single Barrel 37 bucks....

OK I like the four roses but from now on its the Weller Twelve Year... freakin kicks ass barrel they got at Mcscrooges...

Fog, is that a McScrooge's Single Barrel 12 year? Or, the OWA?

OK this bottle does not say single barrel anywhere on it and it does not even have a Mcscrooges sticker on it but I was under the impression it was their barrel... hmmm now I don't know. Also I don't know what is OWA. This is the twelve year old not the antique although I did get a bottle of the antique as well... which is the 107 vs the 90 proof 12 year old...

01-10-2010, 07:42
okie dokie ... yeah I mean they had this huge display of Weller bottles as you walk into the store. They had a sign I thought indicating it was their whiskey and now:

I googled Mcscrooges and this is what I found... google lead me to twitter which I scrolled and found this:

# We just received our barrels of W.L. Weller 90 and 107, the original "wheated bourbon"...lowest prices in town. Guaranteed. 1:11 PM Nov 4th, 2009 from web

OK so he says: OUR BARRELS... means to me he went and bought them and had them bottled for him...

Thanks, Fog. I know he did the NAS Old Weller Antique 107 barrel. It is really terrific. I have a couple. He must have done a regular Weller Special Reserve then, too, it sounds like. I haven't had one of those, as I'm really not a fan of the SR. Too boring IMO. But, because Brent (His Pappy 15 from a couple of years ago is my single favorite bottle of bourbon I have ever tasted) has made so many great picks over the years, I may grab one just to see if I can find anything to like. I was kinda hoping he had done a 12 yr. That one has kinda gone flat for me over the last couple of bottles. Probably more me than the whiskey, though. But, maybe we can talk him into doing one. :D

Used some gift certificates to pick up some bottles on a trip to Boston this weekend . . . got a couple WT Rare Breeds, a OGD 114, two WT Rye 101 and a Wathen's Single Barrel (which I had never seen before).

I was pretty stoked to get the WT Ryes since I only know of of one store that carries it and my wife was very cool about the long detour to get it. I'm also kind of excited about the Wathen's since I don't know much about it -- picked that one up at Federal Wine & Spirits next to Faneuil Hall in Boston. The owner, Joe, was a very knowledgeable whiskey dude and we had a nice little chat.

Not sure if this qualifies me for "idiot of the year" or what, but I stopped in to a store I had never visited before. On the shelf, with a $199 price tag was a bottle of Parkers Heritage 2008.

Had never seen one before and wasn't really up with what was what in the PHC series off the top of my head, but my impulsive thinking and my want to have a cornerstone bottle for my bunker got the better of me.

Poking around some of the bourbon sites, seems like this one is a bit overpriced. Probably would have been better to hold off and use the money on some other stuff. Could have gotten 2 of the new Wild Turkey Tradition, 3 BTACs or enough standard bottles to keep me going for many, many months.

Oh well, what's done is done. If this is the worst decision I make this year, I'll be doing ok.

Wow indeed, I wouldn't be sleeping on the couch, I'd be sleeping 6 ft. under if I made a purchase like that!

Anyway, the strangest thing happened to me yesterday. A vintage airplane or perhaps a train or cruiseship crashed on my front doorstep and out rolled a few vintage mini bottles.

There were a few liqueurs that will serve a decorative purpose only, but whiskey-wise there was a 1968 OGB BiB, a 1963 Old Crow, a 1962 Seagram's VO (86.2 proof) and...wait for it...a 1954 Old Overholt BiB.

It brings me to the question. What kind of line-ups from any certain bottler do you have?

I went out to do a little semi-dusty hunting yesterday. I hit a few places where I had left some things behind. Most everything I was looking for was gone. I did pick up a couple 200 mils of 92 Old Fitz Prime w/faux tax stamp, and a couple bottles of WT8 export. I was close to a Binny's, so I decided to stop. I passed up everything at that store. (the ORVW 23 was taunting me though) Found out another Binny's had some Weller 12. Made the drive there, and couldn't help myself. Bought another case. There's just something about this bourbon that I love. At least I'll have enough of it to hold me till I'm old and grey. Wait, I am old and grey.:skep: I also think I may have another bottle of 09 GTS. Catching up a bit due to weekend work hours. On Friday, found some Old Charter 12 as well as, unbelievably mixed in with a shelf of BTAC 09 releases, an 05 Saz 18. Before I even noted the date on the label, it was readily apparent that this one was different from the other bottles around it in comparison - much darker contents.

Saturday evening found me hunting down PVW15 which I had noticed were becoming more & more scarce during the holiday season. Had to visit 7 stores before securing 2 bottles. What is going on with this one? I could have taken home any number of Lot B and PVW20 as well as a PVW23 here & there. I thought that once PVW15 passed out from under S-W provenance, it would be more plentiful. However, from the store owners with whom I have spoken the last couple of months, demand continues to strongly outpace supply.

Yesterday I picked up a dusty 200ml bottle of Ezra 15/101 Sippin' Whiskey. It even came in a paper box decorated to look like the original full size wooden box with leather hinges. I searched this site and found some old threads about it, and it got good reviews.

This bottle is very old and had a little (but not much) evaporation, and the (real) cork looks pretty bad but did not break when I removed it. It had some plastic shrink-wrap on the top which likely helped prevent even more evaporation. I tried it last night and liked it a lot. I'm not good at tasting notes or picking out flavors, but I will say that this is very unique, unlike any other bourbon I've ever tasted, very sweet, and also has a pretty dark color. I'll try to get a pic taken later and post it in the dusty thread.

My liquor store guy called me today, said he finally got in a bunch of BTAC. Drove over and picked up 2 bottles of Stagg, 3 bottles of WLW and 1 bottle of Saz 17. Got home and looked at all the WLW. Each one had a different proof; 121.9, 125.3 and 117.9. Search the forum amd discovered I bought a WLW 05' (121.9). WLW 07' (117.9) and a WLW 08' (125.3). Still don't have an 09! The guy still had 2-3 bottles left of WLW and will go back on Friday (payday) to pick up some more. He also has a Weller Centennial - asking $85 which I thought was way out of whack and a Weller 19 year. Anybody know about this Weller 19 year? Bottle says barrelled in 1990.
TJ

That's too funny you picked up three different years of the WLW. Can't go wrong with any of those. The Centennial is way too high, if it were me, I'd pass it by unless it's a Louisville bottling then it makes the decision a little harder. The Weller 19 is a very rare bottle to find. I have a bottle and don't like it. At 19 years, it's got way too much wood on the palate. I paid somewhere around $55 for mine about two years ago so if it's in the price range of current BTAC, go head and pick it up and see what you think. Some like the extra wood, I don't.

Do you get kissed with that Weller Centennial because you will certainly get the other.

That Weller 19 is from the first year of production of the BTAC. Highly "collectible" by members here.....you probably already have several PM's. But as Greg said, only slightly drinkable as those I have tried were too woody to me.

Nice haul! So to be clear, he's selling the Centennial for more than the previous WLWs? Definitely think 85 is out of whack. I'd offer him 50 and see what he did. He probably had it selling for 30 a few years ago.

This weekend while I was down in Mass I picked up some things I can't get in the Great State of Maine . . . I picked up:

(2) Elmer T. Lee (although one didn't make the return journey)

Lot 'B' (wanted to buy 2 but for some reason talked myself out of it -- the price jump on this has got me tentative)

NAS OWA (haven't had one yet, just the Julio's SB)

(2) EWSB '00 (picked these up on the way home through NH cuz I was feeling a little unfulfilled -- should have bought that Lot 'B' instead of these, but I am excited to try it)

Just cut a deal for (but have yet to take possession of) a 1.75l WT101 8yr, with faux tax strip. Probably paid too much, as it cost just about the going rate for a current BTAC bottle, on a per-750ml basis.

But hey, I don't know that I'll ever have too many opportunities to snag one of these and conventional wisdom states that the old US 8yr is superior to the current export-only version. I know I'll have chances to replace that money spent, so in my mind it's better to get what you want vs waiting around and hoping that a bargain falls into your lap.

Some WTRB per the Big Dog's info, it's a 1995 bottle for $30.00. The jack ass at the store grabbed the bottle off the shelf and dropped it on the floor, the rug broke the fall and the cork, so I got a discount. half the cork is still in the bottle.

Spirits selection is slim here in River City. Fortunately, it's only a 45 minute drive from my house to a liquor store on the north side of Eugene, a place where I've been able to find a lot of goodies such as VW Lot B, PVW 15, VWFRR, GTS, OFBB, VROHH and VOB, plus other stuff like Barbancourt 15yo rum, Matusalem Platino rum, Germain-Robin Shareholder's Reserve brandy, Forty Creek Three Grain and Bols Genever (these last two being favorites of my wife).

Nonetheless, I've been wanting some more choices. In the course of plugging in various brands/expressions into the Oregon Liquor Search engine, two liquor stores kept showing up over and over again, one in downtown Portland and one in Beaverton, a town just south of Portland.

Last week when I saw that the price of Germain-Robin XO was going to jump from $98 to $114 effective February 1st, I decided it was time to make the trip, so I drove up there Saturday morning and hit both stores.

While in Portland I also visited the House Spirits distillery. I'll describe that in another post, in another forum.

Anyway, at the end of the day I brought home:

JRPS 17 $95
OC 8 $17

Forty Creek 3G 3 bottles, $22 ea

Gemain-Robin XO $98

Neisson Blanc (liter) $30
Flor de Cana 4yo white $20

The Neisson is my favorite rhum agricole blanc. Haven't been able to get any since leaving Florida. Hadn't been able to get any of the FdC either.

As I said, I'd been getting the FC3G in Eugene, but on my last visit there it was gone and I was told it'd been discontinued. Thus when I saw three bottles at one of the stores on Saturday, I grabbed 'em all.

The JRPS probably will get put away and not opened until my 62nd birthday.

The OC 8 was an experiment. My wife likes ERSB ($30 here), but finds BT ($24) "too rough". I saw the OC 8 and, knowing it's the same basic juice, figured she might like it.

Turns out she does, so now I have the problem of getting more. Of course, the price difference between the OC 8 and ERSB is enough that even with my truck's mileage I'd break even on two bottles, and come out ahead on three or more, but my time is worth something too...

If only I knew someone in Portland...who might be driving down this way soon...who could bring some down...if only I knew someone like that...

I'm about to finish the last of some 4R1B that was purchased a month or so ago in Baltimore. I am totally unimpressed. It's not terrible, but it pales in comparison to some things on the shelf that were half the price. Funny thing is, I've only had 1 bottle of 4R1B before, and I loved it. Or so I remember.

Does anybody know how to find out which of the 10 recipes is in the bottle based on warehouse # etc?

On to what I bought today. 3 bottles of ORVW 10/107 arrived on the doorstep. Remember, when living in Maryland, never use FedEx. I had a box that was literally opened along the way, and rejected, just last week. The shipper got it back yesterday, and has repacked and sent via UPS. Wish me luck!

Fishnbowljoe and I went out hunting yesterday, and I was able to buy a Weller Centennial 10 yr and an Ezra B. single barrel 12 yr. The Weller is wonderful, and I'm expecting the same from the Ezra after having some earlier in the week from Joe (compliments of another SB'er).

Joe had a good day as well, but I'll let him tell you about that.

Who me? :skep: We had a good time yesterday. I added to my growing stash of Weller products. I got two bottles of 07 WLW, and one Centennial. To quote Colonel John 'Hannibal' Smith from the A Team, "I love it when a plan comes together." Joe

Finally located a second 2009WLW for under $80. The bourbon gods were cursing me on this one due to the ungodly low price I paid for the 09 Handy & Stagg.

I've yet to try the 2009WLW, having 2 of them might change that in a hurry.

Oh, and I picked up some OGD114 as well.

I finally opened one of those bad boys (WLW2009) recently, it won't last long. Superb!

I bought my first bottle today in NC as well. Seems to be a lot of mixed feelings here regarding BT. So I'm trying to approach this one with minimal expectations with the hopes of being pleasantly surprised.

Halifax, part of the appeal of the BT for me is the price. A great deal at $23.
