View Full Version : how many bottles of Bourbon a month do you drink?

I was trying to figure this one out last night for a swag of how many years of stock of bourbon I have.

With a quick, 1 per month I had 40 years worth of bourbon, but that seemed low... The 1 per month that is.

I pretty much only drink bourbon now days due to my travel again, so at 2 oz per night average, that is 60 oz per month and 2.2 bottles a month.

I do not always have 2 oz and I do not drink every night, but close the last year.

Anyhow, I am going to say I go through 2-3 a month, and I plan on mapping it a while to see...

How about y'all?

As a matter of fact I to am on a mapping of what I drink.
When I finish with what's open now (11 bottles, they are all real low) I am going to do a thorough inventory and drink everything that I have of 2 bottles or more.
Then at the end of the year compare it, with any additions, to what is left.
Also as I have stated elsewhere, my goal this year is to buy as little as possible.

Congrats on the not smoking thing... it's not easy but after a few months cigarettes made me sick. I had one after quitting and almost threw up, tasted awful. Did wonders for being able to breath and such as well!

How many bottles a month... hard to say. I would say 1-2? 2 oz a day on the high end, lots of days I have .5 oz or 1oz... others I have 3. Really depends.

Hmmm, 12 in 6 days, you are on track to buy 730 bottles this year.
Bring up a couple of cases of your favorites this summer, (I still remember your goal).

I'm guessing I consume 1-2 full bottles per month but you can add another bottle or two if there's a special occasion or holiday in a given month.

Last, best estimate was 15 bottles/year. I'm stocked for somewhere around 20 years. I last bought bourbon in October (that has to be a new personal record for since I was 16)

I'd estimate that I finish 2-3 a month. That's a real rough guestimate. There's times when I have a lot of open bottles with only a pour or two in them, and I'll finish 3-4 in a week. Then I won't send anything to the recycle bin for 2-3 weeks. I also share a lot of my stuff with my bowling team, (and others) so that kind of throws my count off a bit. Joe

I typically have about 2oz when I drink and I would guess that I have a pour 3-4 times a week...I would guess that puts me between 1-2 bottles a month! At this rate I'll never run out as I buy about 4-5 bottles a month...;)

I would say 1-2 a month but probably a little more during the holidays...... ( New Years, MLK day, Presidents Day, Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas)

At my current rate of consumption I am knocking out 3 bottles a month and will be out of bourbon in a little over 3 years.
Luckily I am still buying bottles so I will never run out.

IronHead

I probably knock down just over a bottle a month. At that rate I currently have enough bourbon for just over 5 years.

Now, what's the tread about? I think I drink about 18 bottles/year or 1.5/month give or take. Perhaps more in the winter and less in the summer.

I'm counting on my consumption increasing when I retire, but at any rate I too could go the entire year (for several years) without purchasing any bourbon but what fun would that be?

Did you mean "thread" .. just random Cookie thoughts... someone asked me how many gallons I had of juice, so I started thinking how much I have and how long it might take me to drink it....

... I did not like the answer. Hard to justify buying more when you have 40 yrs worth, so now I know where to move my consumption level to so I can justify buying more :D

My best estimate is a bottle or so a week. I just tend to buy what I drink unless its somthing special and that tends to hang around for a few weeks. Mostly thats due to the limited selection I have here in winter wonderland. The best stocked place in 100 miles really only has the most common of what some of you lucky guys have access to.

When I started getting into whiskey a year ago, I saved the corks from the bottles I finished. Initially, I did this in case I needed to replace a bad cork. So far, I haven't needed to reuse any of the corks but I continue to save them as a way to keep track of what I've consumed. Tally...18 in the last year. So, 1.5 bottles a month.

BTW...any clever ideas about what to do with a bunch of old corks?

There's a difference between my consumption and my consumption at home.

I bowl 2 nights a week and the bar there has BT, so I'm good for 2 or three doubles a week there (not a night). I've found that since I satisfy my bourbon jones there, I drink less at home.

My @home burn rate is much less than a bottle a month during bowling season (Sept to April).

emr454

For me it's 2-3 oz a day 5-6 days a week. I try not to drink more than that because I don't want it to get out of hand due to past events that may hove slightly compromised the integrity of my liver, and because my father has a drinking problem and I don't want to end up that way.

Anyway, if I drink 2 oz a day, that's 12.5 days per 750mL bottle, which ends up holding roughly 25oz. If I only drink 5 days a week, then that is 1.6 bottles per month. Of course, I have about 9 bottles open so I don't notice how quickly it is disappearing since it it spread out some.

Yeah, I gotta say I go through 3 bottles in an average month although it's hard to tell, since I may not finish that many, with about 10 bottles open . . . I could be wrong -- I'm sure there are months when I got through 4 bottles -- I've pretty much stopped drinking any alcohol outside of bourbon and the occasional beer if I'm out for dinner.

I typically have about 2oz when I drink and I would guess that I have a pour 3-4 times a week...I would guess that puts me between 1-2 bottles a month!Your guess is on the money. I also pour 2 or 2+ ounces, four times a week, and my calculator tells me that works out to 16-17 bottles a year, or 1-1/3 to 1-1/2 bottles per month. Actually, in my case, that total includes two to three bottles of rye whiskey per year.

Larry

I guess I'm the lightweight around here. As many bottles as I have, one would think I drink my bourbon with a crazy straw. A typical pour for me is about 1.5 oz and at present, I'm pouring maybe 3 times a week. In the summer, I do more like 4 or 5 times a week. I don't drink every day. And then again, there are times when the funk sets in and I go weeks without drinking. Hmmm....too many variables. Ok, to keep the math simple, less than a bottle a month so with my simple math consumption, I have about 30 years worth of bourbon in the bunker.

I have tentative plans to visit a friend tonight so I'll be hitting the bourbon pretty heavy.....here's the lineup and I'll be drinking each one:

'78 7 yr 86.8 pf
'88 8 yr 101
'98 10 yr RR 101
Tribute
Tradition
American Spirit

Drinking all that tonight will mean I probably won't have anything for a couple of days.

I thought I was in the 2 bottle a month range until I looked at my records. I started keeping track of my empties in 2005 but really hadn't kept a running total. I'm actually at a 4 a month average and I know there have been a few week long hiatus since then including my current one since New Year's Day. I don't consider 3-4oz a night too much, I don't binge and have no problem skipping a day here and there. I'm currently on a weight loss regimen or "liver vacation", so it's all perspective, I guess.

You know, based on an average 5% APV for beer, and since a bottle of bourbon is almost exactly the same volume as two 12oz. beer bottles, basically if you divide the proof of your bourbon by 5 that equals the number of beers in any given bottle. For example, 80 proof=16 beers, 90=18, 100=20 and so on . . . using that equation, four 90 proof bottles a month is a little over two beers a day . . . I don't consider that to be heavy drinking.

Or am I just trying to make myself feel better?

Just do volume * %abv, that will give you the actual volume of alcohol, and then you can just divide by other drinks. 80 proof, 750ml is the same as 16.9 12oz at 5%

I can also buy 750ml bottles of Old Numbskull @ 11% ABV, and say "I just have 3 bottles of beer a day." Sure it comes out to about 14 budweisers, but technically it is a correct statement.

Well I tended to buy half gallons... lately I am thinking of switching back to fifths. The Half Gallons have been for Canadian though.

Actually over the holidays on two occassions I had a half bottle a nite of Ezra Brooks... not really a nite as I started at noon so that was not that bad imo. Well I thought I was going to get into Windsor Canadian but realized I like Bourbon way better than Canadian so had the Ezra Brooks instead. Was great for the holidays. I reckon I should get something more top shelfish for when I only want one drink a day, but for when you are having more than one, I don't want to drink the expensive stuff. I probably have a shot or two a day normally so guess am on par with most of u all.
