Hello Bourbon/Rye Drinkers

I was wondering on what is your favorite bourbon and rye that you think is the best to drink consistenetly and is easily available in your area or easily to get. (Please exclude all discontinued items, low production i.e. BT Antique Collection, hard to find in USA, limited edition, etc.). And also, please tell me why (becasue of pricepoint, smoothness, sweetness, etc.).

Here's my favs:

Bourbon: 1) Elmer T Lee - Great price and sweeteness 2) Elijah Craig 12yrs - Also great price and well balanced

Rye: Templeton Rye - Reasonablely priced and easily available thru shipment. This has to be one of the best tasting ryes I have ever tried. Tastes like Xmas spice cake even thou I hate the cake!!!

My favorite everyday pour is OGD114. It's sweet, it's spicy, and it'll knock your socks off every time. I love the strong stuff, and this is one that won't break your wallet. It's consistently good, and always under $30/bottle, usually closer to $20.

It has always treated me right. Well, besides the numerous times I ended up on the floor of the bowling alley, my parents house, my house, and in my dogs bed.

If you can't get it in your neck of the woods, please PM me. I've got some brand new empty mini bottles I bought online that are just itching to get into the tennis match. Oh, and a few bottles of OGD114 to fill them with.

Bourbon: Wild Turkey 101 just because I find it to be great. Thanks Jimmy.
Rye: Wild Turkey Rye for the same reason as #1.
These are (were) available in PA.

It's a tough call for me, so I'll limit it to those under $25.

EC 12

OWA

I prefer bourbons on the sweeter side, and I find these to my liking. There are others I like more, but for the price, I'd go with these.

I also like Dickel #12 for a non-bourbon under $25.

I like the "current" caveat, as I find that my "favorites" tend to shift around from time to time.

Bourbon: Buffalo Trace (narrowly edging out Wild Turkey Russel's Reserve)

Rye: Wild Turkey Rye (101) (2nd place: (ri)^1)

[I need to drink more ryes. I think I can count the different ones I've had on one hand]

I've heard a few good things about the 2000, is it really as good as I am hearing?

As for me:
Rye: Saz jr. when I want low proof, when I want high proof Handy. I would say ORVW Old Time 12 year, but that is by no means current.

Bourbon: I keep going back and back to the standard Four Roses SB, but had been drinking a lot of Very Old Barton BiB lately.

No brainer for me.

Bourbon-Weller 12
Rye-Rittenhouse 23 yr old

Sure hope I get to go back to Florida this year. I could use another bottle or two of the Ritt 23. Good thing I have plenty of Weller 12. Joe

Myself, BBL #16, liked it, plan to buy more
SMOWK, BBL #90, liked it, plan to buy more

...but had been drinking a lot of Very Old Barton BiB lately.

Are you getting that BiB in Portland? Where?

The VOB I got down in Eugene last Saturday is the 90 proof. I like it, and so does my wife, and I like the price ($13) too.

Bourbon: WT101 and OGD114. Both have the spiciness that I love in a bourbon and can be found for under 25.00.
Rye: WT 101 rye and Baby Saz. Both are well balanced ryes with lots of flavor and both can be had for under 26.00.

I honestly can't pick a favorite current bourbon. There just are simply too many great ones!

The rye is easy...Baby Saz. Rye flavor, galore.

No it is a bottle I had with me from not even sure where. Probably picked it up on a trip in Kentucky or Missouri.

I guess since everyone else is, I'm loving the Jefferson's 17 year at the moment and the 2009 Sazerace Antique.

While I'm still new to exploring more of the world of bourbon, my favorite every day pour is OGDBIB.

As for rye, well, I have a lot of work to do there, since my depth of knowledge is very shallow.

Saz jr. - Little pricey but love the combo of spice and sweetness. Never disappoints. OGD 114 and OWA 107 - good example of a high rye and wheater. I would say Weller 12 yr but can't get that in MI.

I like this post. It's fun reading people's latest favorites. OP Bunkerbooze chose EC 12yo, a great choice.

For the past while, my fav pours are OGD 114 and 4R Single Barrel. I like the great flavor for price. I feel good about my choices seeing veterans like DeanSheen choose one or the other of these two.

Rye: VWFRR

Bourbon: Four Roses Yellow Label, you can drink it straight, mixed, its
easy to find and affordable.

Rye: Jim Beam Rye, once again, its affordable, easy to find, and in my
opinion falls in the middle of the flavor profile for Rye's, not too
thin, not too thick.

With just a little nod to availability and affordability-
Bourbon: Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Baker's
Rye: Rittenhouse Rye BIB, Wild Turkey Rye

Most consumed in my house (and elsewhere) [governed by quality/price]-
Bourbon: Early Times KSBW, Ancient Ancient Age 10*, OGD BIB, Jim Beam Black (scored a bunch cheap)

Bourbon: OGD BIB (or 114, but you can't get it everywhere like the BIB). It's got nice wood, sweet, and spiciness. It's very inexpensive and a great bang for the buck. If OGD BIB was the only thing I had, I'd be just fine (don't tell my wife).

Rye: Sazerac (I'd say WT Rye, but it's hard to find here). It's easier for me to find Saz than WT Rye, and if you watch for a sale, you can find it for almost the price of the WT.

Usually when I'm at the store I buy these from and I look like I'm checking out the rest of the shelf I'm really just deciding between these two.

Right now in my nearest liquor stores, if I had to buy just one of each, availability being #1 and price #2

EWSB 2000
WT Rye 101

Dramiel McHinson
03-11-2010, 19:12
I will concentrate on the daily dram for best bang for the buck meaning great taste, reasonable price and always available.

Eagle Rare and Bookers for bourbon. The Bookers isn't cheap at $49 but at 120+ proof, a little goes a long way.

For Rye I like the WT 101 Straight Rye whiskey.

Hawg73
03-12-2010, 10:39
For everyday I like either the Woodford Reserve or the EWSB.

For Rye I would have to say the High West Rendezvous Rye.

There aren't many solid, mid-shelf pours available in my area. If I restrict myself to what I can find within a ten-minute drive:

Bourbon: Wild Turkey 101 (under $20 at Trader Joe's) or bonded Old-Grand Dad (in the high teens). My go-to bourbon for a while was Buffalo Trace at $25, but it hasn't been ringing my bell lately. I was steadily buying Elijah Craig 12 ($25), but got frustrated by the variable taste from bottle to bottle. That said, the EC 12 bottles with a lot of vanilla and little/no Vicks Vapo-Rub are favorites, regardless of price.

Rye: Wild Turkey 101 ($21-25). I was buying baby Sazerac rye at $26-30, but currently prefer the oomph of WT 101.

If I open up the field to bottles I mail-order in significant numbers and enjoy day-to-day, it's no contest. The Four Roses Single Barrels available from a number of retailers are terrific, particularly OBSK and OESQ. For rye, it's the bonded Rittenhouse.

Favorite = Daily pour = Affordable and readily available locally.

I've got lots of favorites, but according to the above definition, the list narrows considerably.

Old Weller 7-107, It's still available everywhere around here, and I bought a handle for $35 yesterday.

FR Small Batch $28, and as a bonus most of the bottles I have bought recently are signed by Ruttledge, he made a trip through Stillwater a couple of months ago and signed up the local inventories.

OGDBIB $24, yeah I know it is highway robbery at $24, but welcome to small town, no competition America. It's funny, it works in my favor on the Weller, but against me on everything else. Don't get me started on the $31 Beam Black.

EWSB 2000, $28 Haven't opened it yet, but I think I will like it when I do. Like maybe an hour from now.

WTRB, $6 a shot at the bar at my Country Club. It's that or Makers for $6, which would you choose?

WT Rye $23, It's good not great but it is the only Rye option in town, except Beam Rye which is swamp gas to my taste buds.

BT, Saz Jr. and ETL would all easily make my list if they were available locally, they aren't and I only drive to Texas where they are readily available once a year to see Randy. Beam Black would make it if I could buy it for $19 like you can in most big cities.
