All I can find out is....

It may be from the early 90's.

and if it is the one from the early 90's, then It is actually a blend of really old make and new 12 yr old make.

Malt Maniacs rated it a 93. and it is quite good !!! (yes I cracked it... )

If anyone else know anything about this bottle, I'd appreciate it. There isn't alot out there about it.

It's a legendary bottle from the mid-90s, known to Scotch fans as the 12-100. The bottle you have appears to be the one called the "double dark." It's thought to have whiskey in it that is much, much older (in the 30-40 range). There was a lighter version that people call simply the dark. I had a sip of the double dark once, and it was great stuff.

If you found it as a dusty, then you have found one of the great dusty treasures of Scotch, and I'd love to hear the story.

Update: Here is a link to Serge's description of it on Whiskyfun, with more info than I had. Scroll down to the third Springbank review: http://www.whiskyfun.com/archivemay09-2.html#210509

Great find, Birdman! Please post some tasting notes when you get the chance. I'm a big Springbank fan but will doubtfully ever get the chance to taste a treasure like this one, so I'm interested to hear what you think.

Does that mean I need to go back for the others????

I was just looking at the Scotch shelf when that box caught my eye. It looks "vintage". I asked the clerk about it and she knew nothing. So I ran home to do a little research. I found very little. I did see on the MM monitor, that a 12 yr 100 proofer did get 93 points. Really high. But I did not know if that was the same bottle. So I went ahead and picked it up. On the way home I wanted to smell it, so I tried to open it. Cork Snapped !!!:hot:

Any way... got her home, cleaned her out and had a pour... whoa.....

The nose is almost grape juice. Sherry is dominate.
Taste is syrupy. lots of oak and leather. This stuff tastes OLD... It is not a "real" 12 yr old. I can tell. Finish is long. minutes later, my tongue is still tingling.

I haven't seen one in a decade. You got a good one there so go buy the other before somebody else does.

Yes, that's a great whisky. I still have a bottle myself. Lots of older whisky in there. Very much a cult whisky and in demand. Great find!

That pic shows that whiskey to be very dark.
Is the picture correct?
Did they add coloring, a lot of them do.
So what's the story behind this scotch, why is everyone pumped about it?

It is very dark. and from what I understand about the Springbank distillery, is that they do not add color or flavor to anyhing they make. Go to the Malt Maniacs...... there is a few good sections about the distillery and the juice.

fyi.... it is just as dark as my Glenlivit 33 yr....

If you're gonna be home Sunday, I may be passing through the area...I'm sure the wife won't mind a couple bourbon buddies stopping by for a dram or two, right?

Awesome find one of my favorite SM of all time.
Here is some info:

This was a mixture of very old underproof Springbank (reportedly 30 - 35 yo between 39 - 43%) with 12 yo at cask strength (overproof). The myth here is that they did not use water to bring the 12 yo cask strength down to 100 proof - they used the underproofed older whisky to do this and I've heard that the resultant mixture varies but is generally around 40% 12 yo and 60% older whisky.

This was a one-time experiment that will supposedly not be repeated. These come in a dark and double-dark (almost mahogany) version and are basically only available from collectors

Colour: very dark amber/mahogany.

Nose: oh wow! Immensely rich and amazingly complex right from the start, reminding me of the Saxplayer, only coated with much more fruits (all kinds, whether dried or as jams) and quite some chocolate. And the very same whiffs of coal smoke and beef stock plus these notes of high-end Cuban cigars, both unlit and lit (say a Robusto Extra by Trinidad – okay, forget about that.)

With water: more of the same, really. Maybe an increased meatiness.

Mouth (neat): absolutely phat-tastic, immensely concentrated and creamy but the most amazing thing is that it’s in no way heavy. Prunes, chocolate, very old sherry, old forgotten liqueurs (remember Parfait Amour?), pipe tobacco, jamon Iberico… And myriads of other aromas that I won’t list here and now (yes, all this porn would get even more boring).

With water: it got a tad drier, I think water is not needed here, and maybe even to be avoided. Finish: long, does ‘the peacock’s tail’.
