Well I'm pretty happy that I get to start this thread with a successful hunt!

1 BHC VSOF
3 BHC Weller Cent's Louisville
2 BHC OCPR Slope Shoulder
1 WT 12 CGF

All in all a pretty good day! I left behind a bunch of other good stuff because I wasn't sure how much BHC stuff I would find...I'll probably go back to a couple stores tomorrow and pick up some others that I left behind! :)

I've actually found both split label and gold foil in the tube, so sometimes you don't know until you open it up.

Bob's had the touch lately, nice scores, makes me almost wish I was back in SoCal, almost.

i couldnt find anything interesting today, so i picked up a bottle of Knob Creek. i havent had a taste of that for probably seven years or so, and it was on sale, so i figured why not.

i cant really tell you my tasting experience since our power went for 3.5 hours, so with nothing else to do i ended up having a bit more than i planned.

Picked up a bottle of Weller 12 and a bottle of McScrooge's Eagle Rare SB. I hesitated on the ERSB, because I was thinking that it's a single barrel ER probably like all other single barrel ERs.........but, this store has such a fantastic track record with their barrel selections, I decided to go ahead and pull the trigger. On a non-bourbon related note, picked up a couple bottles of Pappy Shiraz, too.

Ask Josh how the 06 was for sure, as I've never tried it. 05 and 07 are spectacular. 09 I would consider not buying. I have very high hopes for 10.

I will say that BBQ+Bourbon prefers the 06 to the 07, and his favorite daily pour is OWA 7/107, if that gives you any point of reference. I prefer the 07, and my prefered daily pour would typically be a turkey.

Not to say I don't like weller, and he doesn't like turkey....

You gotta travel. they call it footwork but really should call it wingwork.

I haven't bought any bourbon since last week, which is a DAMN shame. I think it's about time I remedied that. maybe I can go find something really old, like a Old fitz BIB distilled in 1968 and bottled in 1974, to break up the monotony of nothingness. I'm sure I'll find some way to frustrate my wife.

Headed to Orlando tomorrow. Taxi ride from the Airport to the hotel is about $60 but I can rent a car for 24 hrs for $45, so I'm gonna rent a car, drop stuff off at the hotel and do a little nosing around Orlando for something I don't have in the bunker. Any recommendations from our FL brethren?

I live on the AL/FL line and do most of my whiskey buying in NW FL. Some of the stuff I can get in FL but not AL:
BTAC
Elmer T. Lee
Four Roses - Yellow label, small batch and SB (I haven't found any of the special releases, though)
OCPR - This BHC release seems to still be on shelves all over FL from what I've heard
PVW 15 and 20
VWSR Lot B
ORVW 90 and 107
VWFR Rye (haven't seen this one in a few months)
Blanton's
WTKS

I haven't hunted in central FL. Maybe someone in that area will help out.

Yesterday I picked up a Rittenhouse Rye BIB. I had finished my bottle of High West Rendezvous Rye the night before, and my Old Overholt the week before that. When I realized there was no rye whiskey in the apartment, I panicked.

HWRR was good. It shows they can recognize good whiskey when they "find" it back East. Let's hope the stuff they are making themselves turns out this good.

OO was okay, better with diet ginger ale than on its own. For only $2 more, I think I prefer the Ritt.

Unrelated question: I saw a bottle of WTAS out of its box on the shelf. Since it's BIB, it listed the DSPs of distillation and of bottling. Why is this stuff bottled in Arkansas (AR)? Does Wild Turkey really lack the capacity to do this in Kentucky?

It was Pernod's efficiency manipulations. Bottling was in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, I'm not sure how long. It went to Arkansas (http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=6832&highlight=pernod+arkansas) only recently.

Incidentally, the former Seagram Lawrenceburg, Indiana plant makes some of the best rye that doesn't have its own label on it. Templeton and Australia's Cougar probably both come form there. Those Seagram's guys knew what they were doing, as is evidenced by the quality put in the bottle by a workforce some two corporate sales later. Much of what makes Four Roses special can be traced back to Seagram's multi-yeast distilling program.

Been drinking it the last few nights. Very nice bottle indeed. I was expecting the juice inside to suffer the cost of that. But I am happy to declare this was not the case. It is very smooth drinkable stuff. I get lots of vanilla and caramel in this. I recommend it!

Picked up an odd one in CA last week end. It is a Willett 17 yr, bottle 15 or 24 and it is 112 proof. Interesting taste in a very good way. I think I know where it was distilled, but do not really care beyond the fact I like it.

Low oak for 17 yr. No burn at the 112 proof. Lots of roaming flavors like brown sugar, earth, and foliage... I like it. At ~$150 with tax its a bit pricey, but when you are talking 24 bottle only I had to take the shot. Yummy.

Ran out and got a bottle of BT and 4RsmB as I was out of everyday pours.

The store I went to got in a new case of 4RsmB and this case is a little different than the last. The easiest way to describe this batch is creamy. It is extremely smooth, very well integrated and drinks like a fine dessert aperitif.

OGD 114 1981 bought from German e-bay. I did get it on a very low bid, as it is about 6-7 cl erupted. I don’t know how much this will effect the taste. I have noticed that this is a very common problem with these old 114 bottles.

Not all today, but the last few days have been busy with a few purchases:

2 WTKS dark wood tops from 2007 amd 2006 (embossed tops, but the price was around $33, so I didn't think it was a bad deal)

1 EWSB from 1998

1 14 YO Willett that I really enjoyed when I tried it, so this one is for the bunker

I need to convince myself that the 14 YO Willett is too pricey for the age so I don't end up feeling the need to bunker another one!

Thanks for the link Eric. I did read that thread when I first brought the bottle home. Unfortunately it doesn't tell me a lot. I also searched the forums and the one link that told me anything is locked because it went astray.
Here is what I know:

The label says it is straight bourbon distilled in KY, 4 yrs old, and bottled in MD (Monumental Distilling). The tax stamp is still in place from a comptroller that stayed in office from 1959-1998 (no real help there). The lady selling it said the last time it had been price tagged ($13.99) was 2004 from her SKU #.
I don't think its anything to brag about, but I'd never really tried to find "dusties" and I figured for that price, I'd give it a whirl.

There was also a bottle of old Fitz Bonded that I may go back to get. They also had several bottles of OGD that had yellow labels. I've never seen that before.

...They also had several bottles of OGD that had yellow labels. I've never seen that before...

My guess is those are faded orange labels. Could they have sat in a sunny window for a couple of decades?

I've seen black Old Taylor labels, but never a Grand Dad that wasn't meant to be orange.

ESPECIALLY whatever labels beam started using faded badly. you can really tell because the field behind grand-dad's head will sometimes go from green to blue (on the bonded).

As for your bottle, the lack of a government warning (I didn't see one on there anyway) makes me think mid 80s. say, up to 1986 or 7 at the latest as a tenative date.

Cool find, anyway!

For me that's a tough target, I had my first PVW20 for 2+ years before opening it, for most on this board just getting it safely home is sufficient. I wish I had more of that spirit. I'm working on it.

Maybe even better than getting the Pappy home was talking to the owner of my local ABC store and getting the real lowdown on how to get the best stuff in Viriginia -- even the hard to find stuff. He had a whole stash of Sazerac 18 and Van Winkle 12 on hand. It was sooo tempting. But I just couldn't drop two bills on a couple of bottles of whiskey on impulse like that... :-/

If you go back, grab some of the Blanton's they don't sell in the US (Silver, Gold, Supergold, Cask) . I've never understood why they sell their best stuff overseas.

In a nutshell, Sazerac doesn't own the Blantons brand, so only markets one of the Blantons bottlings while concentrating on their own products in the US. A search on this site will make for a good evenings reading on the specifics.

Because Blanton's although is made by BT, bottled by BT and was the brain child of Elmer T Lee but here's the kicker at the request of another company. That company owns the rights to Blanton's and they are a Japaneses company and that's why most of of it is exported. In a nut shell I think like Roger says there is more in depth in another post some where on here.

Coincidentally, I just purchased a Blanton's Straight From The Barrel here in Calgary. It was $80 Ca, the cheapest I have ever seen it anywhere in the world (I've paid about $100 US in Europe). There is the complete lineup of Blanton's here.....even the 80 proofer. Of interest is that the Blanton's Gold at 103 proof was the most expensive at $90 Ca. Calgary is also well stocked with ORVW 10/90/107, 12yo, Pappy 20yo and 23yo.

Friend was in Japan, scored me a few things to which I am forever in his debt.

Attach function doesn't seem to be working to get a picture up but the list was something like VWFRR 1985, VWFRR First edition, EW Single Barrel for Whiskey Live at Barrel Proof, Kentucky Vintage 1974, Blue Wax Hirsch, and a Twisted Spoke 16/105.

NOW it is working.

I think the 1985 are bottled 2000 at an age of 15 and the first edition distilled 1984 and bottled 1997 at 13 years Robert. Give or take a year or so, as this is only from my memory.

Buying bourbon is fun. Just when I thought I was spending a lot of money I went 'round to the scotch aisle and compared prices of things in my basket to the stuff in the locked glass cases. Put things in a lovely perspective!

I'm new, obviously, but having a great time. Today's purchases:

Buffalo Trace (1.75L) - this is my daily pour and whatever comes on my bourbon adventures, it will always be a favorite as it brought me home to bourbon.

W.L. Weller Reserve - since I like BT i'm guessing I may also like this one.

Evan Williams (Black Label) - I wanted to try something from the good folks at Heaven Hill so I decided to start with the basic product.

((I also picked up a 50ml "airline bottle" of Jack Daniels as I couldn't for the life of me remember what it tasted like (last had it in, oh, 1978?) and I wanted to be able to compare the giant of Tennessee whiskey to bourbon. The differences to me are remarkable.))

They also had some single-barrel Evan Williams from 1999 and 2000. I'm going to hunt for the reviews here and consider them to bring home.

Cordially,
Trace T.

I had a little birthday money burning a hole in my pocket, so I went shopping yesterday, thinking I might pick up MM46. I saw it, but at $35-40, I decided on a few more unique bottles that I had yet to try. I got:

EWSB 2000 - Specially selected for Bourbon Street Wine & Spirits Barrel #2, Barreled 5-17-2000, Barrel No. 613, Bottled 5-4-2010. I like that since there's no age statement, they didn't have to wait 2 weeks just to call it 10 years old. I've enjoyed a few earlier vintages, so I had to try this one.

Henry McKenna SB 10yo BIB Barrel #536, Barreled 4/8/99. Pretty bottle, but how do I open this? I'm not sure, but it looks like it might be a screw top under the green foil. Based on some comments here, I'm sure I'll be praising Craig and Parker Beam again.

OFBB 2008 in the 'new' (temporary) glass. Since it was just my birthday, this continues the theme. Many here have claimed this is one of the better BBs and the only OF I ever tried was Repeal.

Bourbon Street Wine & Spirits also had "specially selected" bottles of ER10 (that listed warehouse, rick, and barrel number) and Knob Creek (barrel #319 - the first single barrel KC?). Those are 2 brands I have enjoyed in the past so I may go back for those.

Well, I couldn't resist. Bourbon shopping is highly addictive. I was near the main store of Bourbon Street Wine & Spirits (http://www.bourbonstreetwineandspirits.com/) (there are 7 stores in the area). I picked up their specially selected ERSB 10/90. This has an extra label on the side stating: warehouse C, floor 4, rick 57, barrel #319, bottling date 5/25/10.

I wonder if it's just a coincidence that this store's SB of KC is also barrel #319?

Two things about this visit I must mention. The cashier told me how good this bottle is with a few drops of water as she just tasted it the day before. I'm glad they encourage educating the staff even if she looked barely old enough to drink.

The best thing was seeing Red Stag shelved & displayed AWAY from the whiskey aisle, next to Jägermeister and Southern Comfort, not far from WT American Honey and Seagram's 7 Dark Honey. At least some of them understand.

I will be sampling their Glen Thunder corn and McKenzie rye later this evening. As craft distillers go, their prices are reasonable and they sell you more whiskey than the other guys. The corn is 90 proof, the rye is 91 and both come in 750ml bottles, not 375's.

I will be bringing samples of both to the gazebo in September.

Since getting my money refunded on the Bernheim Barrel purchase Reid and Emerald were doing through KBD I had a little money to spend on hunting and hit a nice little honey hole in St. Paul with a Gold Wax Hirsch, Foil Hirsch, 2003 Eagle Rare 17, 2003 Sazerac 18 and 2 x 2003 George T Staggs. A much better use of my money.

Particularly of interest was the fact that the Gold Wax Hirsch was in the green tinted bottles that the original blue wax Hirsch was in. This gives me hope that this is perhaps an earlier bottling that and that the bourbon inside would closer to the original bw stuff I love.

Finally had things break my way on ebay last night. WTAS for $56. Add $20 for shipping and subtract $27 in ebay bucks to bring it home for under $50.

Seems like WTAS is a "love it or hate it" type bottling, from what I've been able to glean from comments here and elsewhere but at this price, it's a risk well worth taking.

I like it, but I don't think it'as any better than WTRB (a favorite of mine) and therefore not worth 2.5X the price of the RB.

but at this price [under $50], it's a risk well worth taking.

2 '09 GTS - My local store that carries it found missing bottles that didn't make it onto the shelf this year hidden under some other cases.

I went in looking for prices on MM 46, looked up to the top shelf and it was as if God was smiling at me when I saw the still paper wrapped bottles.

I said outloud, "These bottles aren't supposed to be here!". People in the store that were buying pucker and Bud Light Wheat looked at me like I was a crazy man with lobsters coming out of my ears.

I had been distraught since last fall - All she had out was WLR last year, and I was lucky enough to snag the very last bottle of it.

I'm trying to decide if I should go back and pick up the other 4 sitting on on the shelf @ $57 /btl (or should I pick up the PVW 15 bottles that she is holding for me @ $54.99?)

OGD BIB (100) - looking forward tonight to my first taste of this venerable and well-regarded bourbon.

EW Black (a 1.75L on sale with a mini of their "Honey Reserve" attached) - probably evening out to be my daily pour when mixing with anything. I think I like it more than JB Black. I'll save the mini for guests as I've discovered that the "sweet stuff" isn't for me, even under desperate circumstances.

Today while shopping I also noticed a good way to feel thrifty and virtuous about all this bourbon buying I've been doing: walk down the scotch aisle.

Just found out our illustrious ABC decided to stop carrying the EW BIB (white label). As cheap as it is, I wanted to land a couple bottles for the bunker. After the 3rd store looking for it I'm told "oh yah, VA isn't carrying that bottle anymore. It's been discontinued". Now, I don't think that means HH discontinued the white label, just that VA won't carry it anymore. I called one store who said they had a couple on the shelf so of course I made a beeline to said store to snatch them up. VA used to carry a number of Bottled in Bond brands, I think they are down to maybe two or three. The only ones I've recently seen are Old Bourbon Hollow (Beam) and OGD (Beam).

When 4R's went national I think they set different prices for different markets.
Here in MI and Chicago 4R1B is $39.99 plus tax and in KY it is still $29.99 plus tax.
I save $10.60 per bottle picking it up in KY. Percentage wise that's a heck of a savings.

Wouldn't it be fun to get to peruse the label room at HH and pick out a label for a private or liquor store bottling? There are easily hundreds of variations on their main products, many with really cool artwork or regional references, such as this "Little Cabin" appears to be.

Kentucky Tavern BiB 1945/1949
Mount Vernon Rye BiB 1945/1953
Old Stagg x 2 (One 80 proof, can't read the other)
Old Fitzgerald BiB (86 proof? Not sure what's up with that.)
Old Forester 86 proof

This is why I really appreciate the 2 retailers I deal with the most. Many limited allocation items they never even put on their shelves or only put one out at a time. By doing this no one gets to raid the good stuff and while some of us may not get as many bottles as we want we at least get something (sometimes just one, that's why I do my best to stay in the good graces of 2 different retailers so that hopefully I can get 2 bottles of most anything between the 2 stores).

Good gawd. They still make that?

I don't think so. The bottle has a Georgia Liquor Tax Stamp on it, which takes it back a ways. Maybe, late 80's? It's 80 proof and aged 24 months. I love the story on the label ;):

"This is no ordinary whiskey. Barton's QT is so unique, versatile and smooth tasting, it's perfect straight, on the rocks, or in your favorite cocktail or highball. It's almost like having an entire liquor cabinet in one bottle (italics, mine). Master whiskey craftsmen distill Barton's QT with pride, age it in seasoned oak casks, then filter it by a special process. Barton's QT is the easiest drinking whiskey ever created."

Shucks, after that write-up, I may just sell off my entire bunker and drink nothing but this! :D

Some of my favorite dusties.

Thanks Greg for inviting me into your home. As with the last time, I had a great time.

2 Pikesville Rye 86 proof 200ml early 80s
OFBIB pint from '77

2 Fighting Cock 8 year 200ml
Jack Daniels green label 86 proof 500ml from '81
2 OF Prime half pints from '72

IW Harper BIB 750ml from the early 80s

And a bunch of fabulous cigars and a Julio's RHF from Greg. Thanks again Greg!

Found a couple of Rittenhouse BIB's. Haven't seen this for a while so I was happy to find them since my last bottle went a few months ago.

While in Detroit I was able to land the following:

1 Weller Cent
1 RR101
1 FR Mariage 08
2 WTKS William Wallace selections

I visited about 30 stores yesterday and saw a lot of OT 6yr and OGD...nothing else very interesting...I think Tony has wipped Detroit out! ;)

I went into the only store around here that has a decent bourbon selection and found a bottle of Old Grand Dad Bonded.

It'll be my first BiB pour and I'm excited to try it!

You will not be disappointed. OGDBIB is a staple on most shelves around here.
