I got a parcel yesterday with whisky for Yvonne and me. We both got JDSS, WT 8, EC 12, and Rittenhouse BIB. Then she got Beam 7/90 and I got uncut Blanton’s. This was the last 2 bottles of Rittenhouse that the shop owner had in stock and he clamed its impossible to get more.

"Rittenhouse that the shop owner had in stock and he clamed its impossible to get more."

Cowdery noted that a new batch is coming out in October here: http://chuckcowdery.blogspot.com/2010/07/news-about-rittenhouse-rye-and-bernheim.html

"They are now mashing rye one day a month, which is up from three or four days a year just a few years ago. Supplies are very tight right now but a batch of nearly 1,000 barrels will come of age in October, so it should be much easier to find after that."

It is the same bottle that the Binnys Weller 12 was sold in, so I don't know how new it is. Perhaps this is the first time a general release of W12 was packaged this way.

Fall is here. Open your wallet.

Today was a good day. I was able to talk a lady friend of mine into driving an hour, each way, just to pick up two bottles of Four Roses that was selected this past April by Dave Gonano. I sure hope this is the FR bottle that makes me say, mmmmm. I trust Dave, he's never let me down.

I would've picked it up myself, but I'm not making the trip to the Baltimore area until Sunday, when the store will be closed.

It pays to have friends all over.

Normally, I'm not a fan of the fall. The shorter days and colder weather are things I can live without. So, instead of just reminding myself that I've got football back, I figured I'd start this fall off on a better note with a few bottles of Weller 12.

I learned once again if you snooze you lose. Today is a 15% off spirits & wines coupon day at all the Binny's. I knew (secretly of course) where there were three 09 Stagg's, standing up and looking proud as recently as a week ago, but somehow invisible when I got back for purchase today. And I wasn't going to be greedy, only wanted one. I consoled myself with a Binny's Weller 12 and High West Rendezvous Rye.

Here is an late answer from this question from unklebunk from the closed summer thread:
“Nice haul, Leif. You must have one hell of a bunker after all of your recent acquisitions. What did you bring back from the Houston trip?”
Well Hank its only allowed one suitcase of 20 kg nowadays so I didn’t get more than nine bottles: WT Tradition, Tribute, WLW 2007, OFBB 2009, 2*Forester BIB 1986, Dickel BS, WT 12GF and a 25 years old rum. I have the tribute and OFBB in the bunker and I gave away one BIB, but the rest is finished or open. As I live tight I haven’t unlimited bunker space.

Jeff, are they still selling Weller 12? My brother in Chicago claims he was told by Binny's that they're sold out. Is the new bottling already completely gone? Is it even silly to ask you since you're in Iowa? Should I stop asking questions?

In New York, Four Roses Small Batch, a fave of the better half, and Elijah Craig 18 years old, which confirmed my view that this bourbon is on an uptick. Found it on sale at $37.00. Customs and weight limitations precluded buying Bourye, which I saw only after, and the house selection at Astor Wines & Spirits of Eagle Rare 10, whose taste note on a shelf talker attracted my attention. In line with my mid-shelf preoccupations today, Buffalo Trace and a merchant's 101 proof bottling of Williamsburg bourbon looked appealing too. Next time (I may be in the city again later this month).

Two of the new Willett's, barrel selected by Shopper's Vineyard. 17 year old, 137.6 proof.

Between these, PHC 2010 and the above-mentioned FC 15 and WT 12 CGF, I need to slam the breaks on bourbon buying for the rest of the year. Not a bad way to ring out 2010 in any case...

I've got a decent selection of prior years WLW, GTS and THH. 15ish bottles in total. Unless one of those comes out for 2010 with near-universal raves as the best ever of that brand, I'm planning on letting them slip past.

Maybe this is my n00b naivete shining thru and I've never done a head-to-head tasteoff to confirm but my thoughts are, sure, there are some year-to-year differences among the BTAC but the basic core of each wiskey is fairly constant. I'm not likely to miss much if I lack a 2010 bottle, but can crack a 2009, 2008, 2007 bottle instead.

Not sure how easy it'd be to find a similar substitution for PHC 2010, FC 15, WT 12 CGF or the Willetts. All these came on me so close together that I put a serious dent in my discretionary budget. Gotta stem the bleeding sooner or later.

Tough to do, and the jury is still out if I can actually hold true when the decision is at hand but that's how I am feeling today.

Not a purchase but I tasted some Noreaster bourbon made by Triple 8 distillery in New England, Mass perhaps (not sure where). It was at the bar at the Oyster Bar & Restaurant at Grand Central Terminal. It was very good, without any fusel or other young distillation tastes, but not quite like a "normal" bourbon either. Sort of a cross between a single malt and a young caramelly bourbon. I liked it and would like to see what it tastes like at an older age.

Gary

P.S. This was craft-distilled on site in pot stills, the taste made that clear but also it is how I interpret the label.

Finally! A local store is now "carrying" Four Roses products. The quotes are due to the fact that there is a spot on the shelf for it, but none has actually made it to the shelf yet. Their allocation: 1 bottle of FRSmB and 4 bottles of Yellow Label. :slappin:

After inquiring about the 4R1B at the store, they called me back (amazing in itself!) to say they were able to get bottles for $44. A little pricey I thought, so I only ordered 1. I'm going to pick it up tomorrow or Friday, along with 3 bottles of Yellow Label. They made me pay by credit card over the phone today before they promised to order any.

Oh the pains we go through to obtain bottles...

2 bottles Elijah Craig 12 online for about $27 each... in Germany! That's less than the Binny's price, so I'm pleased. Also bought some Dolin vermouth and French brandy-marinated cherries for better Manhattans as prescribed in the the Manhattan thread near the top of the Cocktails forum right now.

Still hoping to get some good rye, though. Will probably order a Rittenhouse soon, as I've never tried it. And I haven't had me a Presbie in a while...

There are some that use the sun setting as an excuse for buying extra bottles. So I would say yes, yes we use that as an excuse

Problem is, I'm in Germany, so it's a bit tougher to find. Cheapest I've seen online is €20 (about $28) before shipping, which is usually another €5-7 per order. I've spent well over €200 online in booze just in the last 2 days, so I don't want to place another big order... and €25 or $35 for a bottle of Rittenhouse seems too steep!

Stopped at a local store today to pick up some beer for a neighborhood party tonight, and decided I'd grab up an EC12 to take with me. Another wonderful $20 pour. In other news, Pappy has hit the shelves, but the prices are whacked. Lot B = $57, 15 yr. = $70, 20 yr.= $100 (decent price), 23 yr. = $300, 10 yr/90 pr. = $39, 10 yr/107 = $50. I'll wait, and look elsewhere to get my fix.

$59.99?

I meant to add that I picked one up for $32.00 on the same trip. Both were spotted in tax-free Delaware. I have no idea why the one guy wanted $59.99 for it. Other bottles were priced "normally".

There is no place in on the Eastern Shore of Maryland that carries it, at least not that I know of. I think it can be special ordered through the LCB, but it's around $40.00 or more.

I've only had one bottle of the stuff, which was purchased in North Carolina somewhere on the Outer Banks (Under $40). I thought it was decent, but nothing special. I did consume it rather quickly while on vacation in OBX, so I decided to grab another while in Delaware for $32 so I could give it another go around. Not only that, but a few friends have been bugging me to try it after seeing the empty bottle sitting on top of the refrigerator.

I believe it was $79 plus a discount for having registered on their website. Turned out to be ~!$72 I think. They are not the cheapest place, but they do have "dollar ove cost" sales periodically. I picked up a Parker Heritage Golden An for $102 at the last sale. Pine Orchard in Ellicott City and Cranbrook Liquors in Cockeysville also have $1 over cost sales a couple of times a year.

I'll post when I find PHC or BTAC at the Montgomery County stores. They have the best deals hands down. The Monty store price for the PHC 27 year is $159 if you want one of those (I got one for my birthday...nice wife :) ). It's about $50 cheaper than any place else I have seen it.

I am working with 2 retailers to get them, one in Ypsilanti and the other in Saline.
Both have been punching in orders for them everyday for the last two weeks and they keep coming up with, "not in stock".
Again it boils down who you know and who you blow.

Update;
I checked in with my favorite retailers today and both told me the same thing, they keep punching in the codes for BTAC and it keeps coming up "out of stock".
I told them that stores in Wayne County and Ann Arbor have them. So it looks like the Rain Vodka salesman is indeed taking care of who strokes him and vice versa.
Also they get no answer when calling the BT/Rain Vodka rep and no return call after they leave a message.
Looks like I'll be driving to Chicago or buying on eBay.

This has been going on out here for some years now. If you don't feature, sell and move Rain vodka, you get no allocation from BT.

My local would sit on the cases of Rain in his storeroom for 9 months and return them the following summer, just to get an allocation of Stagg. Worked for a few years, but he came up dry in 2009 -- I think they caught on!

I answered myself and went into Ann Arbor and I scored 2 George T Stagg and 4 William Larue Weller. Also picked up a Van Winkle Rye.
Now it feels like Autumn has arrived.

BTW, all the other MI retailers that punch the numbers in the LCC website keep getting "Out Of Stock".

A first time purchase of OGD BIB - 100 proof. While the label is attrocious, the bourbon is extremely good, especially considering the price. Depending on when I drink it, I like it better than OGD 114 (of course, at other times I think I prefer the 114).

I love that label, too. But there's one thing about it that I do not like: it fades quite easily.

I hate this because as I dusty hunt, there's been quite a few times where I've ducked in to some terrible liquor store and spotted a severely faded--almost white--OGD bottle on a high shelf. My heart leaps! Then I ask the bewildered clerk, "Sorry, but can I take a look at the bottle up there?"

But when she or he hands it to me and I look at the bottom and it says "'99", or I look at the bar code, and there are those Beam numbers. :hot:

My search for some ND OGD continues. As far as I can tell, Brooklyn is a burned over district.

Long-time mostly lurker. I finally got into dusty hunting some last year after finding some things in Frankfort that I'd never seen. I hadn't had much luck, since things get picked up pretty quickly here in central Kentucky (more and more it seems--just try finding Van Winkle products for a reasonable price).

I did pick up a couple of bottles of the BHC VSOF 12yo last year (pic below--there's a bottle in the box too) for $27. I asked the cashier if he'd give me a discount if I bought them both (all he had), and he knocked off 5%. Based on whatI think

With the day off today, I decided to drive further out in the state. At a couple of really old-style places (all the bottles behind a bar with seats at it), I finally found what I see as my first dusties:

1) Yellowstone - 90 proof - 750 ml (x2). These have what I think are faux tax stamps (no numbers on them) and were distilled at Louisiville. On the back, the volume is in both metric and ounces, and is part of the bottle, rather than a stamp or label. The cap is not tamper resistant, there's a UPC code but no government warning, so I'm guessing these were bottled around in the mid-80s. $10 each.

2) I.W. Harper Gold Medal - 80 proof - 750 ml (x2). These too h ave the faux tax stamp, no tamper resistant cap, no government warning, and a UPC. Again, based on what I've read on here, I'm guessing were also bottled in the the mid-80s. Also about $10 each.

3) OF BiB (x2) 750 ml. They're distilled at DSP-354 and bottled at 414. Well, one of them is. The other doesn't say. It looks like this info was stamped onto the label after they were filled, and one didn't get stamped. I'm pretty sure these are from 1988 (there's an "88" raised in the glass on the bottom).

4) ER 101 -200 ml (x1). This looks to be from the end of the run, since it has the website and email listed on the label. Still, I've never seen it in person and it is #2 on my wish list (behind Weller Centennial--oh, if only), so I bought it for $8.

5) Rittenhouse BiB - DSP-354. Not really a dusty, yet, but it's tough to find here in Lexington and I've found I really like it. This was actually at a warehouse-style place, where I thought I'd found a great deal on ORVW 10/107 at $27 (I misread the pricing label which was for the 10/90--alas).

I left a lot of stuff on the shelves at these places--Old Charter (8 and 10 yo), Old Fitz, regular Old Forester in similar bottles, a pint of Rebel Yell with that squat top that's all cap and no neck (this was up high and didn't look for sale)--that all looked old, but I just wasn't sure. Both places had a mix of current bottles and old and I didn't want to keep asking the guys behind the counter to keep letting me look at bottles. After some more research, and another day off, I'll head back.

Am I even close on the dates above? Any other recommendations for dusty hunting in central Kentucky? I had almost lost hope, but today was a good day.

Dusty hunting in Brooklyn is a bust, but I did pick up a George T. Stagg and PVW15. I'm pretty psyched: never had Stagg before, and last PVW I had was a 20 about 5 years ago.

All things PVW are going really fast here in NYC: the first place I saw 4 PVW15's this fall had them in for all of about 2 days. I rushed to the other place that I knew had them and bought the last 2 (one is for a friend's 40th birthday tomorrow).

Ditto to what Vosgar said. Picked up 2 WLW, a VWFRR and a bottle of PVW15...what an amazing coincidence! The owner of the store now knows that I'm a whiskey fan and I said that I was pleasantly surprised to see the rye (but not the increases in the VW's and BTAC's) and asked him if he's tried it. Nice finds. The Yellowstone is very good, you will enjoy that one. The IW Harper may be disappointing. The one's I had from that era were rather blah and ended up as mixers. You did right by getting 2 of each. That way you don't feel bad about opening 1 immediatly and posting your impressions.

Grabbed the 2010 BTAC today and a 2009 Handy I found out I was missing while updating the bunker inventory. Was surprised to see it, and only 1 bottle of each, at $57.99 each except the Saz18 was only $53.99. I'll never understand that; the one that typically sells out the fastest is priced the lowest. Strange.

A few bottle of 2008 and 09 Handy still there, and will probably remain for a long time.
