I don't start threads, or post too often here on Straight Bourbon, but I sure do read a lot on here and can't get enough of the information available that's here for us participants. It's been very helpful.

However, I was out traveling recently. Often prices for certain American products overseas are completely out of line for what they are sold in the United States. THat's no suprise there.

I was at a typical liquor store in Istanbul Turkey, and as much as I was seeing lots of overpriced bottles of JD everywhere, there was one bottle in this small store of Kentucky Gentleman (1 ltr) going for the equivalent of 85-90 US dollars. YIKES! (It's about $10 at a corner store where I am...)

Now I can understand this to a degree but it also got me thinking of a great thread topic. So here's my question for the members of straight bourbon and your experiences...

"What is the absolutely most out of WHACK price you have seen for a bottle of Bourbon anywhere listed?"

It can be high end stuff way too overpriced, ordinary being asked for way too much here in the US or somewhere else... online, in a store, so forth.

I'd be curious to hear your stories.

Comparing domestic and international prices is difficult at best. I just came back from a business trip to India where they have a 100%+ tax on any imported alcohol. So it wasn't surprising that you would pay more than double what you pay in the US.

I have found regional differences in price. I live in the New York City area and last year I saw the Woodford Reserve Masters Collection for $120 in Manhattan and for $79 in my local store.

The OLCC-set price for Knob Creek (the regular version, not the SB, which has not shown up here) is $37.95, a dollar more than WTRB.

This month it's on special for $32.95, but that's still too much.

I was in downtown Minneapolis and stopped in a small liquor store. All of their prices were normal, except for Wild Turkey RB, which was $80!

In a small liquor store in Pittsburg Kansas, I found a Lot B marked at $75, and in a liquor store in Wichita Kansas I found a Pappy 15 for $200 if memory serves. Found a half empty decanter of Beam for $75 in Blue Springs MO. I've seen plenty of bottles of Stagg and WLW for $99 and up.

Nobody is going to top Smowk, though. When ebay changed its format to where a seller could list a product and leave it up indefinately, the number of absurd listings skyrocketed.

When I went searching on-line for my first bottle of Stagg back in 2004 found it for sale by a very well known internet spirits vendor for approx $150 (its been too long to remember the exact amonut) when the typical price was supposed to be around $50.

I lived in Alabama for 25 years. I always disliked the state stores. But The prices are way better than new york prices and the selection is better. No Dixie Dew to be found anywhere. When I visit this Christmas, I am stocking up.

Pappy 23 for $275, Pappy 20 for $150....I'm serious....spot on La Cienega in West Hollywood. FML...and the worst thing is that these prices are the typical going rates for all Pappy booze. Makes you want to take up wine coolers.

One of the internet sellers for a two week period had Stagg listed for over $900 they lowered it to a more reasonable $200 plus.

Here's out-of-whack, but in a good way..

At the time, this guy had just opened his own store (his father owns several stores here in town), and he had ORVW 10/107 for $12.98 per bottle. I asked him if that was the correct price, and he assured me that it was. I asked him how many he would sell me, and he said that he'd like to maybe keep a couple on the shelf, so I bought all but two. Then Wade went over and bought the remaining two along with an ORVW 10/90 for the same price.

Now that is sweet! Can't imagine why he had them priced so low but you can't beat a bargain like that.

I happen to enjoy the current line of Michter products but $80 for their 10 Year Old Single Barrel Bourbon is insane!

Not bourbon but I bought a bottle of Redbreast 12 from a certain store. Because it was a grocery chain I had a cart full of other items. When the cashier rang up the total I thought it was a bit low. I assumed I had misread the per pound price on some of the fresh fruit I had loaded up on. When I got back home I looked at the receipt. I was only charged 24.99 for the whiskey. If this hadn't been the same store that wants 55 dollars for El Tesoro Platinum I would have told them of the mistake on my next trip into town. In fact, I briefly thought of going back and seeing if I couldn't clear them out of Redbreast 12 at 24.99 a bottle.

Heh. Over the past few years I've pulled about 8 bottles of RedBreast 12 out of Canada for $25 USD. I had family coming over that I always had grab me some on the way over.

There's a liquor store near my workplace that I'll pop into occasionally at lunchtime to browse for new whiskeys. About a year ago, I grabbed a PVW 15 for $45-ish. Now they're $80 and the Pappy 20 is $130 but everything else is in line mostly.

I agree with unclebuck about the crazy prices for Michter's SB's but that's just about everywhere. I think the lowest price I've seen was $62 for the bourbon.

How about $200 for Old Crow. Yes it's some special Traveler edition: the bottle looks like some over-sized after-shave (think English Leather) with a large wood top. Plus a leather belt/strap around the bottle. It looked like it had been sitting on the shelf for 30+ years. At that price, it will sit for 30 more.

Here (http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/1968-crow-traveler-fifth-factory-87297672) is a site with picture.

Holy shit! Who is selling Pappy 20 @ $650?

Might go have some now! It will help wash down the WLW 06 and Four Roses 120th Anniversary I just had!

On a completely unrelated note, I heard of some random dope once paying $350 for a bottle of ETL 90th anniversary edition. What a criminal the guy selling it was. If he's in a Fantasy Football league, I'm sure he's going to lose this week.

Will, your post got me to thinking: I'm virtually certain that I haven't seen a bottle of PVW15 on a store shelf in the last year! I come across Lot B, Pappy 20 and Pappy 23 with regularity but the 15 has been missing around here for ages. Fortunately, the bunker remains stocked with bottles I picked up nearly two years ago for under $40!

Let's not forget the excellent job the broker did in facilitating the transaction. Beautiful execution and a true team effort.
