Anybody up for a little game? Imagine that you have been ordered to lock in the names of just FIVE BOURBONS. These five bourbons will be the ONLY bourbons which you may purchase for the rest of your life. Which bourbons would these be?

For myself, the goal has always been to find value. I'm not a top shelf drinker, nor am I sophisticated in describing bourbon. I'm looking for affordable great taste, and I like high proof. I normally drink neat. Color is very important to me. Dark amber approaching ruby is what I look for. Experience has proven that the darker the hue, the more likely I'm going to approve. The possibility of buying in magnum (1.75L) bottles is nice, but I included one exception in my list. Here are my choices:

Elijah Craig 12 year (94 proof)
Weller Antique (107 proof)
Fighting Cock (103 proof)
Very Old Barton (6 year, BIB, 100 proof)
Old Grand Dad (114 proof)

I could be happy forever with these.

I'll bite. I like your choices. I would want to cover styles and ages, but it's sad to think of only 5 for the rest of my life. I'll only use current releases.

OGD114 for Rye heavy.
GTS for some extra age.
Weller Antique for wheat.
FRSB just because.
And VWFRR, because if I can't have a Rye, life ain't worth livin'.

Cool idea. Although a novice, I'd choose:

EW white label BIB
WT 101
Bulleit
OGD 114
one of the Wellers...(hard to make up my mind)

I'm going to assume the originator meant currently available so I'll go with that.

1. WT 101
2. Very Old Barton BIB
3. Pappy 15
4. Rittenhouse BIB
5. George T Stagg

My selections give me a decent cross section of distillers, mashbill and upper proof and quality.

I could be very happy with Greg's list, but I would probably say:

1. Pappy 15
2. GTS
3. Rittenhouse BIB
4. EWSB
5. 4RSmB

I really have no idea. I'd let someone else make the decision and then beat them up and take it.

I have so many favorites in my "Top 5" that the list would be to long for me to type.

From the range available in Australia (in no order):

1. Bookers
2. Buffalo Trace
3. Jim Beam Rye
4. Elijah Craig 12yo
5. Makers Mark

Whilst not a bourbon, I really have to add one more:

6. Wild Turkey American Honey

I'm gonna split hairs on this one. I have two lists. One for current bottlings, and one for bourbons no longer being produced. Anyone else get a feeling of deja' vu? :skep:

Current list, in no particular order.
1. Weller 12
2. OWA
3. BTAC WLW
4. Pappy 15
5. Lot B

Out of production list, again in no particular order.
1. ER 101
2. Weller Centennial
3. WTRR 101
4. Old Forester BIB
5. A tie between the older Old Fitz BIB and AA BIB.

Well, that about covers it for me. Cheers! Joe

2. VWFRR
3. Evan Williams Single Barrel
4. FR Mariage - either year
5. WTRR 101

Too bad 3 of the 5 are hard to come by.

1. ER 101
2. FRSB
3. Weller 12
4. Pappy 15
5. G. Dickel - I know not a bourbon but would have to have it.

Wow, you all have really made me glad that I began this thread. I never would have imagined such a terrific response, and the patterns are very interesting indeed. I've not had the Pappy 15, but I know and love the ORVW 10 (sipping it as we speak), so I can understand why it appears so frequently here. Keep 'em comin' PLEASE. I'm really enjoying reading all these lists.

The way I first understood your question, it was what bourbons would we want to be able to purchase for the rest of our lives, so I thought PVW15 would be off-limits since we know that it is finite (it could be that OGD114 gets discontinued, but we don't know for sure if it will).

But I'll give my answers under the conditions that most here have understood them, positing that each of the five would be perpetually available. In no order:

Woodford Reserve
PVW15
OGD BIB
Elmer T Lee
FR Small Batch

OGD and ETL because of the intersection of great price and great taste, PVW15 for when I am (or am feeling) flush, and FRSB because my wife loves it, too. And WR because it's great bourbon.

I have a George T Stagg in the cabinet but have not yet tasted it, I wonder if it'll change my list once I pop it open.

Lessee, ...

I may be enjoying two right now.

Booker's
Blanton's Straight from the Barrel Uncut and Unfiltered
... and uhm, ...

Rittenhouse Rye BIB
Wild Turkey 12 y.o. (beats Rare Breed by just a hair)
Very Special Old Fitzgerald

strangely enough, I've had all of those fairly recently, better think harder,

I'd substitute Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye for any one of them except the Blanton's SFTBUU, but already I can't get it.

Likely what I'll probably have to settle for on my future retirement budget, and not unhappily at all is...

Old Grand-Dad 86
Jim Beam Black
Ancient Ancient Age 8 year old
Wild Turkey 101 8 y.o.
Early Times KSBW

Joe I find it interesting in your current list it's all wheated bourbon (no big surprise there for you) but in your out of production list you picked more rye bourbons than wheated curious.

If the question was what is available to you, and not what you have an unlimited supply of, I would replace Pappy 15 with Weller 12 and GTS with ETL.

There is one thing which I have very definitely learned from this thread. No question about it. Next year I MUST acquire some PVW 15. This year, I grabbed 5 fifths of ORVW 10. It's wonderful, and I nearly included it in my list. It would have been my #6.

1. Blanton's - my favorite
2. Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit - my #2
3. Bulleit - value
4. Fighting Cock - inexpensive and a disticntly different flavor from 1 & 2
5. Booker's - need a high proof option

These aren't my 5 favorites, but I think it's a variety of cost, proof, and flavor I could get by with.

I'm pretty much a Noob myself and probably haven't tried more than a dozen or so as of yet, but of those:

Willet Pot Still
Weller Antique
Russell's Reserve
Weller SR
and, not strictly a bourbon
Baby Sazerac

Hey Brian, for just three, that ain't a bad three. I think you would survive quite nicely with those.

I am still working on my list. Can't seem to get it under 17 "can't live withouts"...

This one is easy for me, because my wife drinks bourbon. In the interests of maintaining Domestic Tranquility, I have to pick ones which we both like.

ER 10/90
VW Lot B
VOB BiB
Weller 12 (not currently sold in OR)
WTRB

George T Stagg

This is tough. To make it easier, I limited my choices to four for everyday ($25 or less) and one for special occasions.

In no particular order...

1. EC 12
2. EWSB (a bit higher than $25 around here, but it's one of my favorites)
3. MM
4. OWA or Weller SR
5. PVW 15

I would also consider replacing MM with Dickel 12.

Tough. As far as what I've had (still many more to try) I'd choose these:

1. BTAC W.L.W Barrel Proof 12yr
2. PVW 15 yr

4. BTAC GTS 17yr
5. ORVW 10yr 107

Man, that surprised me. And not so much the recurrence of PVW15, but its huge popularity. Going to have to pick up another bottle.

Mine:

VWFRR
THH Rye
WLW
ORVW 10/107
PVW 20

As a friend of mine once said, "Bill, you're a Buffalo Trace man." Hard to argue, with this list. That said, give me an endless supply of Rittenhouse 23 and I'd probably sub it for the VWFRR.

(Oh, as long as I'm here, the 2010 WLW is aMAZing whiskey.)
