Well, I thought I'd start a new thread since it is 2011.

I've been diligently trying to finish some of the bottles I have open. Sometimes it's tough. There are a few bottles I don't want to finish because they aren't the greatest. But......., sometimes it's exactly the opposite. There are bottles that I don't want to finish because I want to savor them. I want to keep them around and hold on to them as long as I can. I expect most of you know what I mean. I finished one of each when I got home from work today.

I got home from work today and first reached for a bottle of Forty Creek Barrel Select Canadian Whisky. Much to my surprise, there wasn't much more than a sip left. Down the hatch. Yes, I drank it straight from the bottle. Why I don't know, but next my eyes fell upon a bottle of ER 101 Lawrenceburg. What the heck. There was only a small pour left in it too. This I did not chug. I poured it into a Glencairn and really took my time enjoying it right down to the very last drop. :yum:

So there you have it. A bottle of Forty Creek Canadian, and an ER 101 Lawrenceburg hit the recycle bin today. Hey, I'm down to under 30 open bottles now. :woohoo: Joe

Makers 46 and Four Roses Small Batch both go down after a long, cold rainy trip to pick a friend up from the airport (and they were delayed an hour).

Both of them I consider to be quite nice pours, and I'd be more than pleased to have a drink of either if anyone is pouring, but at their price points, I don't see myself buying either again anytime soon.

I killed an ORVW 15 and an old-time 86,8 proof Dickel 8 last night. I did discover first at the last pour that the Dickel was bottled 1977. I never really came up with a decision on what to think of that bottle. Very rich in general for the proof, but not much of typical Tennessee whiskey flavours. If someone had poured it blind to me I would have taken it for bourbon for sure.

Since the first of the month I have seen the following give up the last of their greatness: ERSB, BT, ETL 15, Lot B, JPS 17/batch 2, PVW 20, VOB BIB, EC 12 and a '76 OT BIB. Finished a bottle of Woodford Reserve last night, marked Batch 08 with Lincoln Henderson's signature. I received this as a gift in 2004 from my sister, who had kept it unopened for, I suppose, a few years. I didn't crack the seal until last year.

Any idea when this was produced? I'm guessing that this was 100% Old Forester stock, as it tasted quite a bit better than their current bottlings. The color seemed a good bit darker, also.

My guess would be mid to late 90s. I've never had a bottle of Woodford from that era, but I would really like to find one and compare it to the later batches mixed with bourbon from L&G.

From a Texas monthly magazine ad from 1976 (previously posted here http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14743&highlight=texas+magazine+eagle+rare) the Eagle Rare 101 introductory price was stated to be about $10 which is $40 today. $20 ten years ago is $25 today, so it certainly did not retain its initial expected retail pricing between 1976 and 2001 and you guys were getting a great deal.

I understand ER was intended to compete with Wild Turkey, hence the bird, 101 proof and premium price. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery but a brand it does not build. Having said that, the W12 tasted a bit thin next to the 1970's Old Forester Bonded my wife was drinking. That stuff is brown sugar + a Joe Frazier left hook.

Drained the last pour from a bottle of Four Roses single barrel, warehouse DS, barrel number 43-6111. I enjoyed this bottle very much, but the next FR I buy will be barrel strength.

Just finished up a bottle of Blanton's that had been opened for about 3 weeks. It was very good. Will need to get another one from the bunker.

I reluctantly finished off a bottle of Four Roses Small Batch LE - 2010. I really enjoyed this one and did not enjoy tossing that bottle in recycling. Oh well, now I'll have to move on to the bottle of 2009 Mariage that I have tucked away.

Ritt BiB, Handy and VWFRR are now dead puppies. Sad day for the rye group. Each will be fondly remembered.

Finished two bottles recently. First was George Dickel 12. Didn't like it at first, but grew on me and now I will buy again. Second was Ridgemont Reserve 1792. A great bottle right from the get go. I will definitely buy more of this.

Killed a Thomas H Handy 2009. Thankfully I won't have to hunt very hard for a replacement.

Finished off the Old Charter 8 which is good as I like the 10 year old better.
