I'll kick it off with a bottle that can be found in most good liquor outlets around Oz; Wild Turkey Rare Breed - from my knowledge i think this is a blend of a few different years - 6, 8 and 12-year-old stock at 108 barrel proof.

First few pours out of this wonderful bottle has already gone from this Xmas gift Here's to the memories of Jimmy and Eddie Russell when they visited here late last year. Thanks for sharing America! Cheers!

Started last night with a small pour of Buffalo Trace before dinner, had a couple of Jim Beam and Cokes with our meal (pork spare ribs in honey mustard sauce and salad) then finished off with a generous pour of Evan Williams Honey Reserve. I'd have put the Evan Williams over ice cream, but our daughter finished the tub for her dinner

Yesterday I caught up with family at a pub between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. I hadn't planned on having a drink........ until the $29 lunchtime rump steak special I ordered came out....... 1.1kg (39 ounce) of prime black angus rump with 0.5kg of thick fries on the side . I had to order my first Jim Beam and Coke premix of the year to try and wash the thing down. The drink tasted great, but sadly the steak got the better of me as I only made it 2/3 of the way through

We should honour the 'Australia Only' bourbons: Cougar, McKenna (from Four Roses - not Heaven Hill) & Jim Beam Small Batch. I'm leaving Slate out of the list because....well, I'll let Scott explain if he reads this ;)

What about WT UDLs. Remember the WT Tour guide saying they were Australia only product and one of their biggest exports.

Inspired by Gary winning BOTY, last night I tried a little vatting experiment by combining a measure of Basil Hayden with a measure of Bookers. I can't explain exactly what I got, and am not sure I'd do it again, but my theory was that the BH would lower the proof of the Bookers and add a specific Rye eliment to the taste. Unfortunately all I could taste was the Bookers so I think the ratio's need to be adjusted :skep:

spy247
02-09-2011, 01:14
Nice one Cam. I've never been game to try any vatting. Possibly the Bookers was too robust for the Basil Hayden.

Cam and I enjoyed a few last night. Along with our families we went to Outback Jacks steakhouse for dinner, we then came back to my place for dessert, and a bourbon or 2.
First we had KBS Weller 12s (Barrel of the Year and "The 4th barrel") - bottles that Cliff brought over to Australia with him :toast: Cheers Cliff!!, 1994 WT12 Gold Foil, Pappy 20, Pappy 23, 1980s Makers Mark 101 proof gold wax, Old Forester Birthday Bourbon, Old Fitz 1849, and side-by side sampling of Evan WIlliams Honey Reserve, Wild Turkey Liqueur with Honey & Wild Turkey Amercan Honey. The old style WT honey liqueur was the hands down winner, but all were good.

We're looking at doing a ETL shootout sometime soon. We'll put a KBS Barrel of the Year up against a Barrel C, and I think a Binnys Selection and a standard bottle. Should be fun.

Last night (while watching Sons of Anarchy) I had a pour of Pappy 15, followed by a generous pour of Lot B. I finished the evening off with a splash of Evan Williams Honey Liquor in the glass mixed with the dregs of the Lot B.... Wow! What a difference that made. It seemed to smooth the liquor out and give it a depth I hadn't noticed before. The honey was still prominent, but the whiskey changed to a smoother, sweeter tasting bourbon.

It's really fun to do blind taste tests. I put the bottles in identical brown paper bags, tape the top of the bag to prevent cheating, mark the bags, and then pour into marked glasses. It's a blast to tear off the paper bags after comparisons are made to see which bourbon was in each bag!

Hello fellow Australian bourbon-files - decided to revive this thread as we're well into the next spring/summer with our first significant electrical storm of the season ending with an absolutely beautifully clear day, in Brisbane anyway.

Tonight's libations have started with the very popular and wonderful

followed by a 10yr Russell's Reserve 101 proof,
an ample pour of 2010 George T Stagg
followed by a 1964 8yo 86 proof Old Kentucky Tavern

Cam I can report that this is not a bad drop at all. 3 years old @ 37 %.
A bit young though. The nose is mainly mint and menthol. A big mouthfull reveals some vanilla but the body is very light and watery. Finish is short as expected.

I initially mixed it with dry, but ended up drinking it straight by the glass full. I paid $39.99 for it. I prefer the Cougar at this price point.

Definitely only one of the few worth getting at Duty Free, not sure which airport you score yours from, but Melbourne its $69 per bottle.

Very good stuff, I've had a few bottles (still have another 4 unopened with one more coming in a week) and out of the last couple I have had there has been a clear difference in taste between each bottle.

Its good been able to send employees overseas with instructions to pick up a bottle or two at Duty Free on the way back

Melb too - $69 is still good value. I'm going to Singapore, so unless there's a nice whisky or whiskey available there, I think my allowance (which will be my wife's allowance as well) will be going to JD on the way back in.

I can get my hands on William LaRue Weller, Van Winkle Family Reserve, Old Rip Van Winkle and Cabin Still. I wouldn't say they are readily available, ie in most liquor stores.

But I am on the West Coast. May be the guys on the East coast might have better availability.

None of those are readily available on the East Cost, but can be found in 1 or 2 specialty stores. You'll also pay anywhere from 3-10 times the US prices, depending on the store.:hot:

Hi Marty, it's different in two ways: It was a barrel selection single barrel, and it was non-chill filtered. I can't tell if it tastes different from a standard Pappy 23 bottle as I've never tried a standard bottle :skep:

Had Scott (Hightower) and his family over for a BBQ on Saturday night. Did an impromptu bourbon cocktail list as follows:

Jim Beam Cherry White Chocolate Manhattan
15ml Sweet Vermouth
15ml White Chocolate Liquor
30ml Black Cherry
30ml Jim Beam Black
Dash Bitters
Stir until chilled, serve in chilled Manhattan glass.

Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey Jam Jar
45ml Jack Daniels Honey
15ml Lemon Juice
10ml diluted Honey (1:1)
8 Mint leaves
Shake well. Serve over ice in a Jam Jar or Lowball Glass over.

Liquid Bourbon Ball
60ml bourbon
30ml white chocolate liquor
7.5ml hazelnut liquor
Chocolate shavings
Pour over ice and stir. Strain into chilled glass. Top with chocolate shavings.

The Bourbon Shake
45ml bourbon
45ml chocolate liquor (cream based if possible)
5 mint leaves
3 scoops vanilla ice cream
Blend with a scoop of crushed ice. Serve in appropriate glass.

They were all good, but cocktail 1 & 4 were definately our favourites.

Checking my receipt now, it appears that they either made a mistake charging or I got a decent discount on some beers (Sierra Nevada $3.47 a bottle, Brooklyn Lager $3.46 a bottle, Murray's Wild Thing $9.12 - I pay more for these at bottle shops!). Dropped a fair bit there so maybe it was the discount. Good night and if you enjoy cigars, you can smoke them inside due to the fact they promote the place as a member's club.
