In celebration of the best time of the year I made a visit to Binny's to find that they have finally gotten in their private bottling of Weller Special Reserve. I grabbed one and will probably be grabbing some additionals in the coming weeks for the bunker...on first visit it sweet on entry with maple and vanilla turning to a hint of dried fruit on the finish. I didn't get the woody character or the dryness that I have on some of the WSR SB's out there...going to revisit in a week or two to see if I still give it the "buy" rating!

The WSR is always a crowd pleaser with folks as it is such an easy drinker. Over the past few years I have had bottles that have been just "OK" to others that are very good. Looking forward to your take on the Binny's as I am due to do a bit of restocking.... assume this is an under $20 bottle?

The other day I found a handle of WT Old#8 bottled in '95. I had some from '97 that I was not impressed with at all, but I'd heard that earlier years were much better (but I forgot which years were the good ones), so I took a chance and bought it. It turned out to be real good tasting.

I also picked up a couple of OWA and one OGD114 that day.

I've only had one taste, compliments of Joe, and as a guy who has loved all the past Binny's bottlings, would just say this is my least favorite and "OK"... but I'm just not the biggest WSR fan and didn't think much either of the Everett's bottling that a lot of other people really enjoy. I think Joe mentioned this was originally supposed to be an OWA bottling :yum: but something got lost in the translation between them and BT. Price is $18.99.

Yeah I picked one up over the weekend and echo these sentiments. This is the first bottle of WSR I've ever tasted, and I find very little reason to revisit it. I'll say that for a $19, there really aren't any offending notes in the bottle, but there isn't much to it either. I could see it blowing away the regular OWA bottling if it was 107 proof, but at 90 proof, nothing really makes it onto the palate.

If you need to get drunk very quickly, it's a great deal and it'll do the job, but if you prefer to savor your whiskey, I just don't see it. I'll continue to look for it as I work on the bottle, but I'm very underwhelmed thus far.

Some interesting finds yesterday that I picked up this morning after a little research:

Weller 12yo with the raised wheat in the glass (picture below)
Numbers stamped on the back, according to Ian S., indicate it is a 2004 bottling: 42041013:22pm
So far I have only smelled it but it has a superbly rich aroma... probably going to go pick up a newer W12 today and do a side by side

WTRB W-T-01-97 375ml
I'm not much of a Turkey fan but figured I could either drink this and get a feel for what WT used to be or use it in a trade with a friend

WTKS Pewter top
All of the information on the necker has been completely rubbed off with the exception of "On Rick No. 26"

Any information on these bottles would be helpful. Thanks.

That Weller 12 is actually a 2010 release...they didn't start using that bottle until 2007 and the code indicates that it was bottled on the 204th day of 2010 at 1:22pm. ;) Sorry to burst your bubble...:(

On the WTKS I'm guesing that is a 2001 or earlier bottling as the sticker on the front changed in 2002 to a brown sticker that they started using on the WTKS smooth brown tops in 2003. :)

I have a WTKS from 3/5/01 that has the brown the label so I'm guessing this one is older than that.

Along the Weller 12 lines, I picked up 3 bottles this weekend for $14.99 each. It was a small store in a small town. They had price stickers on everything and did not have a scanner at the register. I didn't put a whole lot of thought into it when I saw them, other than grabbing them. Later on, I made the determination that whoever put the price tags on these bottles was not a bourbon person and must have thought they were Weller Sp. Reserve. I don't really care what year they are from, but they are the new bottle shape.

Ok, so the dating is solved. I have several new bottle Weller 12's and the serials are either gone or in a different format than the above.

It's also safe to say that there have been different versions of this new bottle and label. I would also say that some SW juice has made it into some early offerings of this bottle. I have a liter of the new bottle that is definitely SW....I have no doubt about it.

Whatever the verdict, my raised wheat emblem bottle tastes significantly different from the newer bottle I bought today to taste side by side. The "older" bottle has a dark sugar note I find present in PVW and a rich "strawey" wheat dryness. The newer bottle has the distinct BT corn note that I know so well from the countless OWA bottles I've consumed

Seeing that I have now sipped from two different newer bottles definitely containing SW juice. I believe you...

But my Tommy Gun don't!

Another thought to consider... I had 3 different people do a blind tasting of the "old" Weller 12 and the newer one without telling either what they were at all. Each one picked the raised wheat emblem as the richer, smoother and better whiskey.

My new bottle, without the wheat emblem, has the printed stamp: "34 10 111 0458 W"

This stamp is not consistent in sequence, spacing or font with the other bottle in question.

The early bottles of this stuff were most likely Bernheim juice not SW...SW closed in 1992 so I'd have a hard time believing that they were using SW juice at 15 years of age when they had 12 year Bernheim available. In 2007 Binny's bought a barrel of 14yr 3 month Bernheim and bottled it as Weller 12...I would think that BT would use the same juice for standard bottles when they have Julian needing their SW barrels for Pappy. IMO the Bernheim Weller 12 is very good...head a shoulders better then the current BT Weller 12.

Did the Berheim juice mimic the cotton candy-esque nose and finish of the S-W juice?

I've tasted 2 bottles of Weller 12(new bottle) that are definitely the closest thing to SW than ANYTHING that BT has produced. From the char/wood out of those Weller 12(SW?) bottles, they could definitely be older than 12 years. Did SW barrels come with the purchase of the Weller brand? If so, wouldn't it make since to bottle what they had while their own Weller mashbill distillate was aging?

In a sense yes. I feel that it is between BT and SW juice, which would add salt to the argument of being Bernheim Juice...

Did you complete everything since 2000? If so, major congratulations on that, it's taken me about 7 years to pull it off.

But no, I have never heard of a sixth bottle, there is the occasional additional realease like the 2005 Staggs of which there were three, but no 6th bottle in the Collection I've ever heard of.

I guess you could call the Weller 19 a "sixth bottle." It was part of the original BTAC and was released 2000-2002. William Larue Weller then was introduced in 2005.

Nice pot still bottle. As for it's use, I plead the Shultz defense..."I know nothing".

Regarding the Willett at TPS, I was in the process of ordering another PHC Goldie but they had no more in stock. As a stand in, the recommended 3 whiskies to me, with the Private Barrel Willett 17 being first on the list. I did not order it but it had my attention and curiosity.

Early release RHF BiB
2x OGD BiB 8 yr old bottled in '90
1 ER101 750, 1 375, and 20 200ml. All NO bottlings.
OC Bib 4/5th quart bottled in '71
WT CGF and RR101
WSR liter from '87 and 750 from '89.
4x RY 90 proof 200ml bottled in '85

I left a good amount of the ER101s and RYs for the next hunter. Along with a bunch of OC12 L'villes. I also found some rather evaporated bottles of tax stripped OGD 114 bottles and a Fairfax Country. All in all, not bad for just a few stores.

Funny thing. There were only 2 bottles of rye sitting on the shelf with the lone PVW 15 & 20. I was about to check out, and then asked... "Do you guys happen to have any more bottles of Van Winkle?" The clerk got on the computer and discovered 4 more bottles of VWFRR. A few minutes later they were on the counter next to the others. Glad I remembered to ask!

haven't seen any posts of people picking up any single oak project bottles. Picked up 4 today ($60each) and a whistlepig. don't plan on getting many of these, too expensive and too many. Seem really hard to come by around here though. Left about six of them on the shelf if anyone around annapolis wants them. Bay ridge wine and spirits. They had a lot of good stuff on the shelf including a hirsch 16! Gotta go back and pick up one of those jefferson 18's they had.

Ya know, I just had a hankerin' to pick up a replacement bottle for my recently departed Bulleit Rye. I'll usually pick just about any bourbon/rye up once, particularly, if it's cheap. This ain't necessarily "cheap"...$28 around here, but it's worth a second bottle. This is a nice little whiskey. Young, bright, distinctive, sparkley....Actually, it's...fun. Yeah, this is a fun whiskey. Perfect for Summer, as I think about it.

In my running around today I stopped in a Hy-Vee grocery, they have the best bourbon selection in town, I wasn't really looking for anything. BUT I found a bottle of van Winkle Special Reserve 12 year old "lot B" :woohoo: It was their last of 3 they got in yesterday, I had given up hope.

The liquor manager called the other 3 stores and found 1 more bottle, also the last of 3 and that store said they would hold it for me for 30 min, thought I was going to get a ticket getting there

After taking a break from bourbon purchasing due to beer buying becoming more and more expensive I decided to drive down to NH today and pick up either a bottle of George T. Stagg or Thomas H. Handy that I had seen awhile back the last time I stopped on my way through. Three stores later and no luck. Feeling bummed I just picked up a 1.75 of Evan Williams Black, a Rare Breed, and a bottle of Old Overholt since it was on sale and my only bottle of Baby Saz is looking low.

Really wishing I could have come home with one of my original intended purchases... selection just seemed to have gone down since I was last in.

Good call. I went to Liquor Barn, Party Mart, and a few other stores here in Louisville looking for a bottle. All I found was empty spots on the shelves were Baby Saz used to be. Needless to say I freaked out and started to call around until I found a few.

I do agree with Bob, though. Baby Saz is at it's best with Ginger Ale. Pack a glass full of ice, pour a healthy amount of rye and just a splash of Ginger Ale. It's my summer cocktail of choice. Even the slightest amount of Ginger Ale really brings out flavors in the Saz.

Todays purchase is actually kind of exciting. It's my mystery bottle purchase from Binny's.

About two months ago, I sent along to my sister a little extra in her birthday card, along with the instructions to grab something for me, and then the rest was for her. I also gave her some "ideas" of what I would like. It was generous for both her and the purchase.

Since then she has kept me in the dark about it. But she has graciously now passed it on to my Mom, who has a bad case a grandbaby fever and needs to make her trip out here to get her "fix". I'm sure you that have grandkids get this.

As fun as it is to go to the store and pick something, this has been pretty exciting too! Plus I know I'm getting something that i can't get locally.

The suspense is over. Actually, its been over for about 9 hours. But before I found out what it was there was another purchase.

As mentioned earlier today in another thread, I was bummed that some local Pappy 20 that I've been buying slowly over time had been snapped up by somebody else. But much to my amazement, there was something else new in stock that i've been wanting, but was never expecting to come into stock. Across the isle from where the Pappy was, sat three bottles of Colonel E.H Taylor JR. From speaking with a very knowledgeable source not long ago, I never thought that i would see any in my area. Our state allocation was pretty minimal to begin with. And through a fortunate trade, I managed to grab one of the limited bottles. So to ease the pain of my Pappy lose, I decided to pick up another Taylor. Plus, I really have a thing against just having one bottle of something if I can help it. I like to have one to sample, and another to store away for some later day.

Fast forward a couple of hours later, and what is handed over to me from my sister's mystery purchase............Another Taylor. Just my dumb luck, that I buy another bottle of something I figured I wouldn't be able to get my hands on, and I get a third one handed over to me.

Besides, I really was hoping it might be a bottle of Whistlepig from the little clue that she had given me.

Still, a rather good day.

After a few weeks of being extremely busy at work, working on projects around my house and yard, weddings, picnics, bowling practices, etc... I finally had a day to relax. So, this morning my wife asks me if I want to take a short road trip to put a few miles on her new SUV to help break it in a little. :skep: She said that since I hadn't bought any bourbon in a while, we could do a little hunting along the way. Who was I to argue?

1 bottle of BT Single Oak, Barrel #4
1 bottle of 2010 WLW
2 liters of Old Fitz BIB, DSP 16, tax stamps 1980
4 bottles of Cabin Still, faux tax stamps, 1987
2 bottles of Barclay's, faux tax stamps, 1988 & 1989

We stopped at a few places other than liquor stores too. My wife found a couple of things for herself, and a few things for our grand daughter too. All in all it was a nice day. Cheers! Joe

New wood paneling in the den?

Nope, this old house came with that old paneling.

The correct answer is a bottle of Old Commonwealth 10yo 107prf.
To go along with Julian's other two originals,
Society Of Bourbon Connoisseurs 20yo 112.2prf
and
Twisted Spoke 16yo 105prf
I now have my little trio complete.
All bottled by the Commonwealth Distillery Co Lawrenceburg, KY.

I'm 13 days late but, due to MD enacting a law on July 1 that added 3% to the sales tax (6%) for alcohol, on Jun 30 I purchased:

1 case - 4R Small Batch
1 case - 4R Single Barrel
1 case - Buffalo Trace
1 case - 10 yr Eagle Rare
1 case - Bulleit

That should hold me until I make my yearly visit to Lexington/Louisville next April. I'm not paying the extra tax to these bunch of crooks in MD.....

There's nothing illegal about purchasing liquor and driving it across state lines, is there? As long as the bottles remain unopened and your buying for personal consumption, you're perfectly fine.

There's nothing illegal about purchasing liquor and driving it across state lines, is there? As long as the bottles remain unopened and your buying for personal consumption, you're perfectly fine.

It depends entirely on the laws that each state have established. For example, I believe that here in VA, under the state laws, you are permitted to bring in two liters of liquor purchased out of state, but more than that is a violation of our liquor laws. VA is interested in getting its state liquor excise tax, so they don't want you buying your bourbon in a neighboring state or DC.

I like the OF Prime for $9.95.

A few years back I got a OF BIB for $10. The store owner new it was old and held it for someone who'd ask for it.

I went into an old store in the New Center area of Detroit hunting for bourbon when I was asked what I was looking for my usual saying was anything old with Old Fitzgerald on it. He said I have a bottle for you. He reached behind some other bottles and pulled out a bottle of OF BiB from about 1982. It had a price of $12.95 on it, he said it yours for ten bucks. You never saw money leave my hand so quickly.

Asked how he came upon this he said it was in the store when I purchased the store. He also said that there was a ton of lower shelf bourbon that he sold cheaply to college students.

Several bottles of I. W. Harper Gold Medal with tax stamp.
A bottle of Old Taylor from 1978 with a funny shaped bottle.
Two handles of Benchmark with tax stamps.
Four pints of AA 10 year with tax stamps.

I have never tried I. W. Harper but this says 4 years old and not much else.

For anyone in Texas the Spec's 8 year Willet bottled at barrel strength is pretty good juice. A bit expensive at $90 bottle but the barrel only made 174 bottles and I have killed 3 of them.

We picked an 8yr Willett barrel and it yielded somewhere in the 125 bottle range. You're right though...$90 is VERY steep for that bottling.

I picked up a WTKS Smooth Brown Top from 2004 for another member today...:)

Wow, TPS has an 8yr Willett for 1/2 that price

For what its worth I was doing a barrel strength tasting with friends and between the 2010 Handy, 2010 WLW and this 8 yr old Willet everyone thought the Willet was the best of the bunch. For me they all have something to offer and I would be hard pressed to rank them as I find all 3 exceptional.

I bought a handle of George Dickel #12 today, a dusty with a non-TE screw-cap and faux tax strip.

My most recent haul was 4 CNB OWA #49 and 1 AAA Ten Year.

It's only my second try on the AAA as the first bottle I bought of it years ago was a store selection that was awful and completely turned me off of the stuff. With some prompting I'm trying again. Right out of the Bottle it seems pleasant enough. I'll have to see what happens with a little more air.

Single Oak #'s 35 and 99.

Was planning on picking up the store's recent single barrel Buffalo Trace bottling, but hey, if opportunity knocks........

Went on the Koval Distillery (http://www.koval-distillery.com/) tour and tasting yesterday afternoon. Picked up one of the fewer than 200 375ml bottles they produced of Lions Pride 47th Ward Blend whiskey, their first multi-grain whiskey (and their first to use barley and exceed 80 proof), to add to the Wheat and Dark Rye I already had.

Not everyday pours by any stretch, but some interesting ones to be sure.

They've just added a new 2000 liter pot still that will go into production soon, hopefully allowing them to expand their sales territory.

In the last couple of days my bunker has grown by a pair of CnB OWA barrel 49 and a 2006 WTKS brown embossed top.

Well,
I have a bottle of the WT. It is very good and has a lot of "Character"!
Picked up an Angel's Envy. Very pleasant, and a bit less boldness than the WT!

Went down to Cincinnati today to see Cueto pitch an absolute gem of a ballgame. Stopped by Party Source while in the 'nati and picked up Angel's Envy, Weller 12 year and the Willett TPs private barrel 5 year.

Bought a couple of bottles of EW white while in Va. Also wanted to get some Early Times 354 bourbon to compare to an early 80's bottle I have but only found minis of it. If it isn't that big of deal, I won't be out the price of a 750!

Stocked up on some WSR today - they were being sold for $9.99/750ml, so I bought six of them. I usually find them for $19.99/750ml here in Atlanta.

I think that WSR is a very good standard pour, and it's a steal at that price!
