Location, location, location...
Old Forester B-Day bourbon will come in 2 'flavors' this year. Lots 90J17 and 90D27, both from 1990, show the importance of maturation environment, namely how location can create different ranges of flavors in the same bourbon.
One lot was stored on the 1st floor of the warehouse (cool) and the other was exposed to the heat of higher floors. L & G hopes to have 1,000 cases of one and 450 of the other. Bottling starts in July.
Happy B-Day friends and neighbors!

So now I am going to have to buy TWO bottles of Birthday bourbon this year just to get the basics. . . sheesh, I can hear my wallet crying already. . .
Seriously, if its as good as last year, I can't wait!! http://www.straightbourbon.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif http://www.straightbourbon.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/grin.gif

That's a long way from 600 bottles don't you think?

Bobby, here's the scoop:
Last year, they bottled nearly 500 cases (6 bottles per case). L & G promptly sold out of this inaugural limited edition in 2 days.
This year they'll triple the amount of cases by having the two releases at once. Even so, that's less than 8700 bottles available worldwide.
They'll use the same cool bottle as last year w/ some label design changes.
Omar
I was wondering if the bottle style would change or not. Thanks for the info on this one Omar. http://www.straightbourbon.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif Will all these great offerings this year ever cease! http://www.straightbourbon.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif
Mark,
Let's hope not! http://www.straightbourbon.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/smile.gif
Bob
I like the bottle enough, but it takes up too much valuable real estate in my liquor cabinet. I was hoping they would change it. Hell, just give it to me in 2 liter bottles http://www.straightbourbon.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/smirk.gif
Haha, yeah I was kinda hoping they would change it as well jeff, but hey as long as the product is as superb, it's all good with me. http://www.straightbourbon.com/ubbthreads/images/icons/wink.gif

Thanks for the info Omar!
Just today I received a call from Binny's regarding a recent order. They told me that I was getting the last 2 bottles of '02 Birthday Bourbon that they had in stock. So we'll all need to look elsewhere for more. I plan to stock up better on the '03 version.
Sam's has plenty, at $53.99 a bottle.

Chuck,
At that price, maybe their supply will last until the February 2004 warehouse clearance sale, around which I am already planning my future purchases. (This year I paid full price for Hirsch 16 in January, only to see it on sale for $53.99, IIRC, a month later. Of course, one never knows what will be on sale, but wait-and-see looks like a good strategy to me.)
Yours truly,

Bill, welcome back!
The '03 Birthday version(s) will be out Sept. 2 -- at least in Kentucky. Just one more reason to consider a pilgrimage to the holiest of bourbon shrines, Bardstown, on the 3rd weekend in September.

New info on the upcoming 'Birthday' vintage bourbons from Old Forester.
- One is 'Spring 1990' (93 proof)
- The other is 'Fall 1990' (89 proof)
Labrot & Graham promises the unique character of the 1990 vintages will not be replicated again. Release date is Sept. 2nd.
Hint to our Commonwealth of Kentucky members: Availability should be way better than last year, but if supplies are limited next month, you represent our best chance to get a taste at the fest. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Great news Omar! Question though, do you know which one is the more 'limited' one based on your previous numbers?

Hiya Mark,
L & G didn't specify which one was 450 cases. Both are quite limited when compared to the standard 86 or 100 proof Forester expressions. Let's hope they have them in the stores this time.
Omar
You're not kidding! And if the stores do get them in, Bobby may make a day out of driving to them all! http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif I'm sure we'll score some somewhere or our KY friends will hook us up! http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Wow, only a couple weeks away http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/toast.gif I do have a problem with this "double" release though. Now I feel like I have to stock up plenty of both of them. Do we know anything about the price points? Will each have a distintive label? Will the proof be the same? I need answers please http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
I'll get some I'm sure, There was still some around about a month after release if you didn't mind driving all over Louisville for it. I don't think I'll corner the market for sure. I guess my plan is to get one of each, pop the tops and decide which one to hoard, Or Plan "B", buy as much as possible of the small order first and then go for the other one. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I suppose the moving of FRSB to spring is a good thing when viewed from September 2.

He said the proofs will be 89 for the Fall 1990 and 93 for the Spring 1990. He also said that they plan on using the same bottles as before but with some label design changes here. Two cheers...
Kentucky stores are getting 1700 of this year's Vintage OFBB bottles.
(Total production: aprox. 9000)
The Courier-Journal says the Spring 90 vintage, kept on the outer edges of the upper floors of the warehouse, has a long & spicy finish.
The Fall 90 vintage, kept on the interior/lower floors of warehouse, has soft & lingering fruit notes.
Worth noting: Fiscal '02 showed the 1st increase in Old Forester sales in 29 years.

Brown-Forman selected 15 barrels of each, said brand manager Michael Haering, enough to fill about 9,000 bottles, or a bit more than twice the 4,000 of last year's version from 1989.
According to this story, the bottlings will be equally rare. This differs from the earlier news that one would be a bottling of 450 cases (2,700 bottles) and the other 1,000 cases (6,000 bottles). The total bottling remains the same.
The other real news here is that the fuller bodied of the two is the Spring bottling at 93 proof, the higher of the two proofs, with the Fall bottling being the more subtly flavored of the two, bottled at 89 proof. Each is bottled at a lower proof than last year's inaugural bottling at 95 proof.
It also appears from the image on the biz journal website that the hang tags will differ, the Spring in green, with the Fall in red like last year's vintage 1989 bottling. By the way, last year's bottling was distilled in the early Spring (March 23, 1989).

Lets hope that stuff like this continues... Wouldn't it be great if every bottle of bourbon had some basic info about the mashbill, where it was stored in the warehouse and how many barrels were mingled together to make that particular bottle? i can't understand why everyone doesn't do that already... I would think that it would add individuality to bourbons, almost like vintage dating does...

Called several local liquor shoppes today and no sign of the Birthday Bourbon. I was told by a gentleman at Shoppers Village that the "sales rep" hadn't mentioned anything about it. Another told me to check back on Thursday. I'll keep you posted as I plan on calling around every day. If anyone else, Bobby, finds any, please let us know (after you have purchased your fair share of course http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif )
Jeff,
If anyone else, Bobby, finds any, please let us know (after you have purchased your fair share of course )
I talked to Guthrie (Toddy's) yesterday, and he doesn't think he's gonna get much more than about 6 bottles of only one expression. He had been expecting it last week, but it didn't happen.
You might try my buddy Morgan (you met him @ Shoppers Village). He's changed positions, he's now assistant manager @ one of your bigger Liquor Barns. I'm sure the folks @ SV can tell you which one.
Actually, I'd love for them (Moe & his SO) to join us on the Buffalo Trace tour if it would be ok with everyone. As Bettye Jo said 'the plot thickens'.
Just spoke w the folks at Commonwealth Wine & Spirits (official distributors of Old Forester in KY). They should have it 'any day'. Initially, they are releasing just one vintage (Spring) to be followed 'in a few weeks' by the Fall vintage.
Sorry folks, we may not have access to both vintages during the festival. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/banghead.gif
Omar
They should be http://www.hondavision.com/forum/images/smilies/whack.gif for making us wait weeks between each release... That's just not right... Not only does it make comparing them both side by side during the festival impossible, but those of us living outside of KY may find it even harder to find them both now. Oh well, as always, thanks for the updates Omar!
Oh, and did I mention what they are doing is wrong? hehe http://www.hondavision.com/forum/images/smilies/bsflag.gif

It was just too easy for them to ship everything at one time and make consumers lives easier. Not to mention making their time during the festival more enjoyable by allowing for tastings and comparisons between the two... I wonder who in charge made this 'great' marketing decision. http://www.hondavision.com/forum/images/smilies/kicknut.gif
I do feel for you guys comming from out of state, but for me it is something of a relief. Now I don't have to come up with the money to put away several bottles of both at the same time. I'll be happy to help anyone out in obtaining the Fall release when it is in fact, released.
I started saving money for the new release of OFBB (hell, I started saving jsut for this years festival in general!) once I heard it would be a yearly thing last year http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif. It's that good... Let's hope they continue to impress us with this years as well, whenever we get to taste them both. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Thanks for the offer to help people as well Jeff, that is very nice of you. Looks like some may be needing it now.
I don't know what to say. It works for me, but who cares! I just made a call to someone who said they would have it Wednesday but they do not. So the End of this week is to look forward to. It will be out sooner or later. One place I went to informed me that it was a one time only shot, last year. Another, We have plenty, but it was plain ol' Old Forester. Not many folks know who George Garvin Brown was or when his Birthday occured. You'd think B-F would put a little flyer in the cases, Hey, there was this guy named George and he means something to us.......Please run this by your shelf stockers........ http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/soapbox.gif

You know gang---this lack of marketing fanfare accompanying the second annual release of B'day Bourbon tells us that we bourbon fanatics are (thankfully) still a small, small minority--a mere fly speck on the distilled spirits radar. This is not to say that the distillers who service our craze don't care big time about what they do, but I do mean to say that the corporos above them consider the bourbon segment of the market the ugly step-sister in their quiver. I, for one, think that is just great. We don't need any bourbon prom queens anyway. We all know what we are looking for, we will find it, and (I trust) we will continue to share it when we find it with our sisters and brothers on this board. 'Nuff said. They can release these fine bourbons in sheer silence for all I care. WE WILL FIND THEM. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Your point is well taken, Cliff. Let us Bourbon Nuts do what we do best. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif
On the aside one of the folks I spoke with did mention that they were getting a lot of calls on this one.

Right now I think things are just about perfect. We have BT bottling some wonderful discoveries in the inventory (the original Antiques) and introducing the truly remarkable barrel proof Stagg; B-F bottling a wonderfully balanced Birthday surprise (or two) each year; Julian bottling some extraordinary wheaters; and a host of others (including WT and HH) bottling tasty bourbons of marvelous sorts. And of course there are the gems like Hirsch, Wathen's, and Four Roses Single Barrel, too.
I, for one, hope these fine bourbons remain the stealth bomber of the spirits industry. They can fly beneath the media radar screen for as long as they like. I prefer my whiskey, like my women, to be less conventional, less cut by the common mold, to aspire to a more refined and nuanced taste and, still, kick some serious ass.
All's well in bourbonville, IMHO. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
Bobby,
one of the folks I spoke with did mention that they were getting a lot of calls on this one.

I was in Evergreen the other day and saw they had a bottle of Weller 19 (I didn't really have the money for it then... http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/banghead.gif). I intend to make that sweetie mine, if it's still there when I get back... http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif So, I called them about the Birthday Bourbon. Birthday Distribution Bulletin
The belated B-day Bourbon is arriving tomorrow, Sept. 5th.
Only 42 stores are getting it in all Kentucky.
State share: 200 cases (1200 bottles).
That's not much, but KY got a lucky break because Alabama (traditionally a huge market for Forester) backed out of their state-run allocation (80 cases). Even so, the KY distributor told me he could use another 100 cases. He said the recent articles in the Courier-Journal (B-day vintages, new design labels, etc) have aroused curiosity and there are waiting lists in some shops.
Look for the Spring Vintage in Louisville's affluent East End (Party Mart, Party Outlet, Liquor Barn, Neff, Prospect) or similar in Lexington, etc.
Forget about the Fall Vintage coming out this month or next. The new shipping date 'if all goes well' is December 8th. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/bs.gif
The Black Diamond 100 proof OF may or may not be out during fest. It has to do w/ rotation of stock. Distributor says our best bet is to ask individual store managers to special order the Black Diamond bottles for us in advance.
Tip: If you still need the Birthday '02 and can't find it anywhere, try Chuck Evans in Bowling Green. They have 6 bottles left.
There you have it.
Cheers,
Omar

what is the difference between the birthday bourbon and the centennial bourbon?
As the sun set in the Bluegrass, I had a smile on my face and a song in my heart. Nothing Better In The Market. I hope everyone who gets this OFBB enjoys it as much as I have so far. There will be other days and other Bourbons to be sure. It's all Brown Forman and Old Forester Birthday Bourbon today!
George T Who?
And just think, The experience of today can be blown away by the next heavy hitter that comes down the line!
The present Birthday Bourbon is the best Birthday Bourbon by virtue of the fact that you can Bunker it as deep as you'd like. Don't take my word for it try it yourself, and go from there. At this point it doesn't matter what the next lot of OFBB will be like........... Can it get any better? http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/toast.gif
Birthday Bourbon is to commemorate George Garvin Brown's Birthday( Sept 2) who founded Brown Forman. I haven't tried the Centennial I don't recall that it has created as big a stir as OFBB. Do you like it?

I'll keep an eye and ear out Bob and let ya' now if I should hear anything. But with shipping for you, you'd probably be best to wait till KY. Don't you just hate shipping a bottle from the city for that much money! haha

Bobby, Jeff:
You haven't cleaned up the shelves in the southern part of the state, i.e. Bowling Green, have you? http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/skep.gif

This Thread , very active a week ago, isn't seeing too much action now. What would fix that? I think once folks have their very own bottles in hand the urge to post will again be a strong one. I stopped at a liquor store today just to see if they had OFBB. They didn't and the lady behind the counter, I could see her eyes glazing over as I recounted the story of Mr George Garvin Brown, etc.I guess anything more than Give me a half pint of Jim Beam, A pack of Winstons and a Coke, can I write this check for 10 dollars over, will cause that!I won't say she could have cared less, but at the same time, she was unconcerned about the whole thing! http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/horseshit.gif

Well, at least for my situation, it's exactly what you speculated: no Birthday Bourbon '03 available. It's depressing actually--this whole limited release phenomenon is just like reliving the Stagg drought. I even made a trek to DC to see if my favorite high-end liquor store had PLANS to get some. I bought two bottles of the '02, and while at the register I inquired if they would be getting the '03. The guy gave me that glazed look you described when I told him there would be two releases this year. I don't think he even understood that it is a 'vintage' bourbon!
It's been touched on before...but I think we fanatics have to make peace with the fact that we're a rare breed (no pun intended!) Retailers don't have the slightest clue.

OneCubeOnly,
Don't despair fellow bourbonian. If your liquor store is clueless, call the Old Forester distributor in your state. Louisville's East End was supposed to get a bunch of the Spring cases. Maybe the stores are ordering a little at a time, for fear of getting stuck w excess inventory. Mike, can you update us from L'ville?
The KY release date of the Fall Vintage is holding firm, December 8th.

I was pleasantly surprised when in Florida this summer the clerk of the ABC store was really interested. It happens he was the beer manager and really interested in his selection of beers but also wanted to learn more about spirits. I praised a few bourbons they had but mentioned several that I thought they might be able to get. He introduced me to the spirits manager but that guy was not quite so enthusiastic. A lot of those types seem to be interested in hot sellers and then 1 or 2 items to recommend for top shelf.
Omar,
I'm not Mike, but I can tell you the Party Source on Shelbyville Road has a couple of cases ($31.99). And Evergreen Liquors (also on Shelbyville Rd.) has over a case, but they want $33.99.
AND...
Guthrie @ Toddy's Liquors has agreed to hold 5/6 bottles until the the Festival for ya'll, but he wants $36.99.
No one will go home dry... http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/drink.gif

BTW,
I found a cache of Weller 19 (Antique Collection) at a shop in Lexington. If anyone's interested, before it all disappears, I can deliver at Festival Time.

Thanks for supply scoop Brenda.
Ed, Jim Butler is a huge fan of the Weller 19. Send him a PM in case he's not checking forum today.
