Picked up a few bottles this morning:

1x WLW 117.9 proof (is this the 2007 bottling?)
1x Leopold Bros.
1x FR Mariage 2008
1x Distillers' Masterpiece (20y/o boubon finished in port wine casks)

The first three are for me and the fourth is a pick up for a friend.

Nice work Dude!
Yes that is a 2007 Larue also my favorite.
And the 4R '08 Mariage is a killer bottle, I am envious.

Well, dummy me. Forgot to get a replacement for my recently departed OGD114. Learned this the hard way when I went to hit it last night. :(. So, picked one of these beauties up today. Also, since I have so thoroughly enjoyed my recently purchased bottle of Leopold's ASBW, I decided to get 2 more. :)

A few days late, but last week I picked up 2 bottes of WT101. Didn't have any around, and with a group expected in a few weeks I need to have all the staples.

Tonight I got a bottle of E.H Taylor Single Barrel BIB bourbon. I bought a bottle of the original release earlier this year and had to get a bottle of this. I like old Taylor a lot and think the brand has a great future if it is done right!

Evan Williams Single Barrel 86.6 proof. Barreled on 11-10-99. Barrel No 403. Bottled on 6-1-09.

This is my first bottle of Evan Williams and you can see that I have already "popped the cherry". I normally drink Bulleitt but wanted to try something new. I like it.

Where in God's name do you live such that you can just walk into a store in 2011 and grab a 2007 WLW!?!? That's SO unfair!

LA (hell, the entire west coast) never has amazing finds like this!

For the record, very well done, Sir. :)

So unfair, I'd have to agree except that I did exactly that within the past year.

This was in a store that didn't have any WLW or BTAC on its shelves then one day a WLW 117.9 appeared.

I understand why people really love this bottle. Its great.

I'd beg to differ...some of the best "dusty" finds posted here have come from the west coast and LA specificly...you're not looking hard enough as I know for a fact that there are plenty of "dusty" bottles sitting on the shelves of stores in the LA area.

I picked up a bottle of 2010 WLW yesterday...it was the last one that I know of in the area and I hadn't gotten one yet. I guess I'll continue my WLW collection for another year. ;)

Could probably put this in the "Wee Dram category, but...

Went the Canadian route and got a 375 of Canadian Club 10 Year, and 750 of Crown Royal Cask 16 750.

Haven't spent much time with the CC10: the one pour I had was so-so, which is what I expected. It'll be a decent mixer, or one to put on the rocks while I'm cooking, cutting onions and not thinking about nosing fine whiskey.

The CRCask16 is a great whiskey. A splash of water really took the winey note over to a sweet, creamy, great pour.

I wish more distilleries were willing to do some aging in cognac or sherry casks like some of the Canadians and many of the scotches do.

Not today, but his past weekend.

Made the Binny's South Loop run as the misses and I went into the city to see my sister for a surprise pop-in and take out for some fun this past Sunday.

Having never been there before, I have to say, it's a very nice store.Could have easily spent more time there but we were on a limit.

My main focus were items that I couldn't normally get ahead me. So I think i ended up with a pretty nice assortment.

x2-Angels Envy
x1-Weller 12yr
x1-ET Lee-Binny's pick
x1-Mellow Corn
x1-High West Rendevous Rye
x1-Forty Creek Double Barrel
x1-Herbsaint 100pf-Definately a touch nicer than the 90pf
x1-Bitter Truth-Jerry Thomas's
x1-Luxardo Cherries.

It was a ball. Plus some wine for the misses.

My surprise score of the trip was a bottle of Weller SR, white paper label, that I found in a local store by my folks. It was the only one they had. Bummer......

And one for the dusty catalog. When we got into the folks saturday night, I was planning on having a beer before bed, as my dad usually has a couple in the fridge. Sadly, no beer. So, I decided to raid the basement. My folks have never been big spirit drinkers, but they do have a couple of bottle holed away that haven't seen the light of day in decades.

So up comes a bottle of Seagram's VO 6yr Canadian Whiskey. Circa 1984 according to the tax stamp on the neck. I figured this was the safer one to take, I'd probably catch a bit more hell if it was the Crown or Chivas from roughly the same time period.

Light straw colored in the glass. Weak nose, very mellow and light in the mouth. Medium finish. Not what i usually go for, but it was very pleasant after a long day of visiting the BIL and a couple hours on the road after that.

This also got brought home. Not the fanciest pour, but one full of memories.....

I think I can still find a 2007 WLW unless Bob took it. The 2008 and 2009's were extremely scarce and was only able to find one of each.
Last thing I picked up a few days ago were an OWA107 in the old bottle and an ORVW10/107.

Went to party source this morning with hopes of maybe getting a bottle of the BTAC. Got there at 8:10 and they were already sold out. Apparently that little blurb they said about a 2 bottle max and trying to get this stuff to "as many bourbon fans as possible" was pure b.s., as I saw several people wandering around the store with cases of the stuff (not that I got there in time to get any anyway, but still...). All I came away with was a bottle of weller 12.

The "cases" you saw were the empty boxes... A lot of folks were asking for them for the info sheets inside (and to carry their two bottle allotment). I was close enough to the front of the line to see that no one got more than one or two bottles.

Got my hands on an 18 year old Willett wheater, barrel proof. I heard second-hand (someone who knew the guys who selected the barrels) that it's Stitzel Weller. I haven't verified it because I haven't met those guys, so for now it's just an excellent whiskey. I can't even bring myself to open it; instead I'm nursing a 375 of BT and making googly eyes at my closet.

Odds are about 50/50 it'll be opened in time for Sunday Night Football...

Michter's 10 year old straight rye, which by the colour, taste and other reports is at least 18 years old IMO.

It has that trademark taste, not easy to describe in words, I remember from the best early BMH rye bottlings, the one connected to that company in California. Beeswax, maybe.

This particular one is quite dry but it all works well with good dashes of sweet and spice.

This is I believe old (in all senses) UDV rye, but I'm not sure.

This bottle is particularly good. The last one was coarse in texture, spirity (but still good). This one is smooth as glass despite 100 points of proof. Perilously drinkable, to borrow a term from the late drinks writer Michael Jackson.

I now have a bottle of Parker's Heritage cognac barrel finished bourbon, looking forward to tasting this one. A bottle of Bowman barrel strength rye, Lot 01-C-14, barrel no. 2, 134.6 proof, distilled 3-14-01 and bottled 5-12-11. Lastly, a bottle of BT bourbon cream liqueur, never tried it and with the holidays on the way seemed like a good bottle to have around.

Picked up a bottle of ER10 today. Headed to Binny's in Buffalo Grove tomorrow and will definitely pick something up (maybe a few somethings depending on price) - any suggestions?

I was just at that store the other day. Other than a few bottles that I've not seen in other Binny's (one I bought, one I felt was over-priced), their selection of whiskey was pretty thin. If you can, drive a few further miles east to Highland Park - much better selection. As for Buff Grove, get one of the FRSB they have in the case. I'd recommend OBSQ if they have it.

The one I got was Vintage 21 bourbon. From what I've gathered, the 17 was the best of the three, but I've tasted the newer Vintage 17 and did not care for it. As far as I know there's no newer Vintage 21 release. I'm a big fan of the Vintage 23 rye, so we shall see!

The other day it was a bottle of Willett 4yr rye and a store bottling of '11 EWSB.

After picking up the EWSB I asked my guy what his thoughts were on the bottle. I knew he wouldn't bad mouth it, but was interested in his tasting thoughts.

He said he hadn't had had a sample of it yet, since they just had got it in. Then he said, "Well, we could open that one for a sample?" It was lovely.

Plus, he came to the register and gave me a discount. Double score! I joked with him that they need to give me a VIP card or something so that they can do the discounting more often at the register. "Hmm, since you are a good customer, we could open you a account to get that all the time."

What a night!

Again, this is why you need to work in developing that relationship with your store staff, I know it's been said by many on the board numerous times, and always bears repeating. Good things come from it.

Well yesterday I grabbed a bottle of Garrison Brothers, while I was in San Antonio. Cant wait to try it. Funny thing was that it was hidden in the back of Specs in the premium room and not on the shelf. I would think that an up and coming local distiller would be prominantly displayed, or at least displayed on the shelf. The bottle has all the characteristics of a premium bottle, age statement, grain info distill date, bottle date, even a pretty wax seal and a high price tag.

I am afraid that it will be hard to compete in the premium market with a 2yo product, I just dont think the clients that go to that room should be the ones targeted to purchase this new product.

Also, any DC area SB'ers want to give this a try just PM me.

Well, I was tempted by the $29.99 price tag that my local guy had on the Basil Hayden's. Been a long time since this one landed in my shopping cart. Upon tasting, there's not a thing wrong with this whiskey...at this price. As the label says, it's bottled at "a gentle 80 proof". But IMO, that doesn't mean it's flavorless. The nice 8 years of age give it a good backbone. Plenty going on in this whiskey. I understand the value ratio we put on certain whiskies, but sometimes, I think that we enthusiasts give short shrift to "soft" bourbon. These, "soft" bourbons are made that way by design. But, "soft" is not synonymous with "bland and boring", IMO. It's entirely understandable why we tend to ignore these type of bourbons, based on the plethora of whiskies that we taste. Naturally, we're looking for Bigger, Stronger, Faster. But, I'm often left thinking we're overlooking a segment that should be contemplated on, and appreciated, more.

Have you tried the Bowman yet? I haven't read anything about it, except for vague stuff like "very drinkable". That's good, that's exactly what I intend to do with it, but nobody has notes posted that I've found. From TPS website: Drinking Abraham Bowman Bourbon 1993 (ABB93) Barrel 1 is at once delicious, complicated, and flexible. Depending on how much water you add—and it is quite good straight up, just be careful, for heaven's sake—the flavor ranges from brawny and austere to spicy and supple. There actually is a fair amount of confectionery sweetness (though not quite as sweet as the Bowman Bros. and John J. Bowman whiskeys, which are distilled a third time in Virginia) underneath the imposing oak, wood spice, and rye grain elements; the palate entry is supple and sweet-toned, but the spicy moments pile up.

I certainly feel that this is a fair representation of what I experienced on my first taste at BP. The first thing I noticed was the sweetness on entry and they described it well saying it's a "confectionery" sweetness. I did feel that there was a fair amount of wood and dryness that showed at BP. I didn't have any cut which I will probably do at a later date...I tend to use 107 and 100 as my two proofs that I cut down to. I certainly don't regret buying it but I haven't decided if it's worth bunkering more then the 5 that I have now...I have heard that the small batch of this that they sold through the gift show was the best of the bunch followed by barrel #5 then #1. I wanted to start off with the lowest rated to see what I though of it. ;)

I really just can not get enough of this Willett. It is by far my favorite that I've had recently.

Set out to find 2 PVW15s, thought I had a line on one, not to be. But, surprisingly, I did buy two VWFRR13s. I found one lotB, but they wanted the same $$ as their sold out 15. Couldn't, or wouldn't, pull the trigger on that. I love it, but that's insane.

This might be changing a bit as Ohio just got a small allotment of Van Winkle and my local store began stocking ETL. But I won't give up on northern KY just yet.

To my amazement, I found two bottles of Four Roses Mariage 2008 on the shelf. I thought about it for a minute, and then decided to get them both. For $66/bottle I couldn't turn it down.

I have only had the 2010 LE Small Batch out of all Four Roses special releases, but my first pour out of that bottle was one of the best pours I have ever had. I am really looking forward to trying the 2008 and hopefully I can get a 2011 before they are gone.

Well, Party Source was a bust Sat. I thought I had a line on a Pappy 15 at another KY retailer, some mix up happened though and I was denied. But, I did get two bottles of the VW Rye. I am not the biggest fan of straight ryes, but this was the best I've had. Not sure what I'll do with the second bottle though. As I stated in another thread, shocked to see lotB at the same price as the 15, insane. But now the good news, miraculously to those of us in the Buckeye state, VW quietly entered Ohio last week. After all the calls and emails all over northern KY, Indy, and Chicago, I found a bottle of PVW15 ten minutes from home. As far as I can tell, it was only the 15, and extremely limited, even by Van Winkle standards.

Just got my Christmas shopping out of the way, ordered from a mix of US stores to be shipped to my freight forwarder to be consolidated with the final destination Downunder (Australia) which will hopefully arrive before Christmas

Some of these bottles we just can't get without ordering from the states directly or paying 3-10x what it sells in the USA. Even with considering freight and taxes, still cheaper to bulk order and consolidating a shipment from the US:

Well, here's my purchase:

1x Parker's Heritage Collection Golden Anniversary
1x Parker's Heritage Collection Kentucky Straight 10 year old
1x Parker's Heritage Collection Bourbon 27 Yr.
1x Parker's Heritage Collection Bourbon Cognac Barrel Finish
1x PARKER'S 10YR WHEATED BOURBON
1x WILD TURKEY AMERICAN SPIRIT 15y
1x WILD TURKEY KENTUCKY SPIRIT
1x WILD TURKEY TRADITION 14YR
1x WILD TURKEY RUSSELL'S RESERVE RYE 90 PROOF 750ML
1x Woodford Reserve Master's Collection Maple Wood Finish
1x WOODFORD RESERVE MASTER'S COLLECTION SEASONED OAK FINISH
1x Jefferson's Presidential Select 18 Years Old
1x R1 92 PROOF
2x Devil's Cut by Jim Beam
1x Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve
1x FOUR ROSES SINGLE BARREL 100 PROOF 750ML
1x BERNHEIM SMALL BATCH 90 PROOF 750ML (not a bourbon I know, but wanted to try it.)
1x PAPPY VAN WINKLE 20YR 90.4 PROOF 750ML
2x GEORGE T. STAGG 141.4 PROOF 750ML (what a pain to get shipped, got to go under my freight forwarders HAZMAT license)
2x William Larue Weller 2011
1x THOMAS H. HANDY STRAIGHT RYE 129 PROOF 750ML
1x Eagle Rare 17 years
1x Sazerac Rye 18 Years
1x TAYLOR, E.H. SOUR MASH BOND

This should stock up my bar nicely, however my pockets are now empty and I don't think there will be any major purchases for a while... lol

I picked up a box "The Original Small Batch" 50ml's today.
I saw these last week at a local store for $19.99, they came in a nice paper and plastic disply box.
But I passed because I was going to KY the following weekend.
As it turned out I passed on them in KY because they were 3 bucks higher so I got them today here in the Mitten.
A nice way to revisit the best of Beam without forking over the cash for 750ml bottles.
These will be enough to remind me.

I was in Tokyo this past weekend, and was lucky to find this lone bottle of W. L. Weller Centennial at Tanakaya, near Mejiro station. The bottom of the bottle has the 'United Kingdom' stuff on it. I have a couple more of these in the bunker but not with that bottom. I think I've also seen this UK bottle used for Elmer T. Lee that I got in Japan. All of my WLWC is from Frankfort. Got the call at work that they got in the VW today and had my request set aside.

When I got there and found my guy, he brought me to the back to pick it up. Then he asked if I would like anything else. Originally they had for me one of each of the 20, 15 and rye. After a bit of talking, and him telling me that the pick was mine if I wanted it, I had my choice made.

Ended up walking out with 3 of the rye and 15, one 20 and one 107/10.

Big grin. Very happy.

Thanks Will. I have yet to try either, but I might have to try the newer OWA 107 as a comparison. I hardly see the older one anymore, so I figured that I would grab them while I can. Unfortunately, many of the bourbons I enjoy aren't sold in Michigan (such as Black Maple Hill series and Willett series). I spent the last week and a half in five states. I visited scores of liquor stores. This year, I was very fortunate to have this trip coincide perfectly with the Van Winkle release. Here are some photos of my haul.

The first photo is everything. The second is a closer shot of just the Van Winkle stuff. The third is a closer shot of everything else, and the fourth is what I'm probably most excited to have found: Sazeracs from 2006, 2007, and 2008. I can't make up my mind if those are better than the two bottles of Wild Turkey American Spirit.

Some of the Van Winkles are from bottling runs prior to Fall 2011.

I picked up the Old Charters and the Evan Williams 1783 because I can't find those in my neck of the woods. The Buffalo Trace bottle is a single barrel selection of the liquor store where I purchased it. I picked up the Very Old Barton BIB because I like the older style bottle.

As if it needed to be said, great finds! If you don't mind me asking, which states were you in?

Nice work Jonny...I agree with hectic1. Would have sucked to do all that work and come home with nothing to show.

The current PVW release has not quite yet hit Georgia, but last week I was driving through a small town and stumbled across two PVW 15 (2008 bottle date). I picked them up and happily went on my way.

One case of OWA NAS Handles

I've been dipping into the stash a bit more than I'm comfortable with. Gotta stretch it out.

PVW 15 for me.
Lot B for my dad (although I will have some of it when I am there, so I guess it is for both of us)
