EC18 can be sooty but phenomenal with the right barrel. Vintage 17 is great stuff, smooth and complex, but a heck of a lot more expensive than EC18. What's the verdict? I saw a stash of Vintage 17 today and I can't decide whether to get 2 EC18s or 1 Vintage 17...

Current Vintage 17 is a wheater from what others report. The only EC 18's I've liked and get past the soot are the ones distilled in '92. Those compare favorably to the older rye finished Vintage 17's but still lack the sweetness of the rye Vintage from what I recall. EC 18 is $50 to $55 in the Chicago area and I don't know what current Vintage 17 is going for. I say get one of both and compare.

Very good advice Thad. When in doubt of which bottles to buy, get them all!

Damn, VB17 and EC18 are only about $10 difference here... and when VB17 is on sale that difference is only a couple bucks...

EC18 is about $35 on sale, while VB17 is $70. Don't think I've ever seen it on sale, but then again, it's hard to find here at any price.
