I was in my local store today buying a bottle of Weller 12 before "Snowmegeddon 2012" hit. As I made my way to the register I spotted a small special order area. On the shelf was a bottle of High West Rocky Mountain 21 year old rye for the princely sum of $146.35. I didn't even pick it up.

This is a long list today:

Michters 10 - I have had interest but $89 scared me away when I didn't know much about it.
Col EH Taylor SB - $89
4x Handy 2011 - I might actually go back for this one. It was $75 so not crazy had a BS discussion with Store owner and distributor about Ritt so left without it.

EWSB '98 & '99

Not that this will be of much interest here but another store owner was working a Hirsch 20 Canadian Rye hard. I know nothing about Hirsch Canadian Rye but it look a little thin and light. It might be great but I couldn't justify buying and know squat about it.

Was in a store I have not visited before in MN, I picked up Saz 18 but passed on:

ER17
Handy ('10 and '11)
All the expensive High West stuff
Ritt 21,23,25
Pappy 20
Pappy 23
Weller 12 (never seen before in MN, but it was $34.99)
BMH 16
FR LE SB 2011
FR Mariage '10 and '11

They had a lot of good stuff, but only because it was 15% more expensive than at most stores so it probably sits on the shelf a bit longer. However, it was nice to see that some of those bottles actually do exist.

Passed on some Pappy 20,23 and Handy. Higher than normally what I pay, and getting it home in the luggage would be tougher.

But the one I really choked on was the baby Saz at $69.99. I about flipped when I say that price. Way out of range from what I've ever paid. And it's not like other store in the store was over priced either, but this one was just wild.

Sounds like they looked up the wrong one and used the Saz 18 price. On the other hand, I got two bottles of Saz 18 last year for $29 each. When I asked about it they said that was the listed price. I should have bought them all because when I went back a couple of days later they were priced at $59 each.

Passed up a bottle of I W Harper 15 yr and another bottle of I W Harper in a fancy wooden box. Uncertain of what version that it is. It was slightly shorter than the bottle of the 15year next to it. $90 for either, wasn't sure either was worth it.

The first and only time I've purchased ODG 114 was in MN at a store in the Mall of America (I believe it was called Old Vine). I'm guessing locals avoid the MoA at all costs, but it might be worth dropping by on a bourbon hunt.

There are probably not a whole lot of those still around. It is excellent rye whiskey and is one of my favorites. A member here found some recently for $85 I think, which is a great deal. I haven't seen one in a while but they ran in the $125-$150 range around here before they were all gone. $200 is definitely a marked up price but you won't find it a whole lot of other places.

Passed up 2 VWFRR. They were asking $99 per bottle. Too steep imo. The store owner claimed he was charging that price to lessen the likelihood that it would be resold on eBay. Too many of the stores in Michigan are being picked over and the product is not making it in the hands of local enthusiasts. Quite a shame.

Where in Naperville? I got to Binnys(bought a cask Redbreast, but forget what was behind glass) and a few smaller stores, but missed Malloys as it was weeknights and I always seemed to get there at about 9:10. Last time in Naperville I got some Ritt BIB and some Lost Abbeys at malloys.

I haven't had the 23, but the 21 is very, very good.

Passed up a Wild Turkey Rare Breed. I never would have though this a big deal before as I thought Wild Turkey was a "high Rye" mashbill. Now, since I find it is not, I am more tempted... but I should probably try the standard before investing in the barrel proof... it just looks so tempting though sitting there at barrel strength.

And how is the 23? The 21 is one of my favorite whiskies.

It's been posted here by several people and I've heard others say as well that it is too woody tasting. If you like heavy wood flavor then you would probably love it. I'm a huge fan of the 21yr rye but apparently the 2 extra years in the barrel added a significant amount of wood flavor. That said I've never tried it and have always passed on the 23 due to hearing this from multiple people.

Yes, I've read those, as well, but I occasionally come across positive reviews. I can get the 23 in my area, albeit for quite a markup, so I'm always interested to hear what people think.

Passed on some Old Forester BIB DSP-354. I had grabbed a 200ml of 414 juice at the same store and can't remember if I left any on the shelf, but there wasn't any yesterday. At $11 for a 375ml, I didn't really feel like trying it. If I wasn't already spending $75 on ND OGD, I probably would have.

The PHC cask strength was the 1st edition in the series. Last years release was the barrel finished , 5th edition.

I've had a couple different bottlings of the cask strength. The cask strength was released in 3 different proofs: 122,127, and 129. The 122 seemed to get the most love, but all were very good. Go back and get it if you can, you won't be disappointed.

In MI I've seen it for $28-$34 per bottle. Unfortunately, I've not seen it for several years.

Is $57 too steep? Well, that depends, if you have several bottles in the bunker it's expensive, but if you have never had it before, well her is your opportunity to experience an excellent wheated bourbon.

Check to ensure that it has the Bourbon Heritage Collection seal around the neck and cork. The Louisville bottling is generally considered better than the Frankfort but I really like either. I don't think there is much difference between the two bottlings.

A word of caution. If you buy this and open it, it will go much more quickly than you want. It seems to disappear once it is opened. You will reach for it often.

Enjoy.

I've passed up Lot B for $60. I'd rather overpay for ORVW 107 ($45) or PVW15 ($75), PVW20 ($110) or VWFRR ($75).

Others here will protest wildly, but Lot B is my least favorite in an otherwise exceptional range. Check out these tasting notes from LAWS--and remember, Adam and Sku both rate the 15, 20, and rye very highly.: http://www.lawhiskeysociety.com/whiskey-profile/821/Van-Winkle-Special-Reserve-12-Lot-B

A fifteen year BiB is a strong argument in and of itself.

If your tastes run to complex whiskey's with a dryish finish you will probably feel like it was money very well spent. If you prefer big sweet mouth coating Bourbon with a finish that hangs on forever you might feel like you paid too much.

Unless you buy a bottle you won't be sure about it.

I probably should have mentioned that as you get further away from the fall release the prices of the bottles you still see on shelves tend to be higher. Handy is the one BTAC member that you can find on the internet fairly easily though...so it might be worth a little research if you're ever in the market. (Directed at Sean) Also, I'm originally from San Diego and have friends that have had luck finding BTAC at good prices at a few stores scattered across SoCal. PM me before the next releases and I'll fill you in.

These are the posts that are frustrating to those of us that can't find these, especially at those prices. I'm pretty sure I would have picked up the Pappy 20 and PHC 10 at the very least.

Although I certainly understand a buying freeze. I've set and broken many freezes and limits to my bourbon and beer budget. I'm treading close to a woman-enforced involuntary freeze if I don't getting the buying under control!

Does that include PHC 10 Wheated? I'd buy all that I see at that price.

I knew a store that had 6 of them, unfortunately I was only smart enough to buy 4.

You're killing me hectic..I'd love to walk into a store and see those bottles looking at me, and then decide how many I would buy. But sadly, that hasn't happened yet. And I've been to alot of liquor stores:smiley_acbt:

I came across some ORVW 10/90 and 10/107 for $45 and $50, respectively. I try not to overpay, but given the rarity of anything Van Winkle in my part of the country and the fact that I only have 1 bottle of each I didn't immediately dismiss the idea...that is until I inquired about the price and the shop owner replied "I have an eBay account and I know what I can get. I'm not in the business of givin' discounts." I walked out.

No typos. He actually had more of the VW lineup - 15($199), Rye($179) and 12($159). But it was the nerve to offer the weaker sister of a questionable vintage for a buck thirty that I thought was worth sharing.

Those VW10s were sitting next to some 25.99 Buffalo Trace, I can only assume, for comedic effect.

Unwillingly, but wisely, passed on a few different whiskies I had not tasted before: Michter's single barrel, and rye; Balcones Brimstone, and Buffalo Trace Single Oak Barrel 100. Better get to cracking on some side work if those want to come home!

I got upset paying $32 per handle. I guess I should be happy.

I'm afraid this is why wineries/distilleries start raising their prices. Why let the secondary market make all the money? Can't wait till the whiskey flippers go the way of condo and comic book flippers.:hot:

Passed up Hirsch Rye 22 for $179.00.

Store that sold me about 14 bottles Lot B a few weeks ago for $45ish had it marked up to $75. I don't think I'm being a megalomaniac to think I'm responsible for that price jack.

I hate this sort of, "we'll just wait for someone who doesn't know better" price inflation. How long has that Hirsch 22 Rye been round? 7 years? Label says distilled in 1983. Somehow, I don't think letting things sit for years and years and years is great for business.

When it's a yuppie joint on the north side of Chicago, I sort of expect 20-30% markup. It keeps the BTAC and VW on the shelves for a bit longer, and well, Stagg marked up 20% is still worth it to me. So, fine. Rent's higher, prices are higher, small local business, blah de blah de blah.

But this trend of places thinking ebay and not the local market should set prices is some serious bullshit. And I think we all should have a better response to statements like that of the moronic store owner upthread who equates standard retail price with a "discount."

And also: if you think you can "get" that amount on ebay, why not sell it on ebay? Because it's illegal, right? Or usually so?

I guess what it comes down to it, I don't begrudge someone trying to make money. What does entirely piss me off is when I'm one of the very few customers at your pathetic little business and I show up to spend a lot of money at your store for product that has sat around, often times longer than I've been alive, and you then think I'm some sort of ATM machine. You got lucky -- don't push it.

Well, I guess I figured out a secondary benefit of those glass cases for these greedy store owners. It's not just to deter shoplifting. If I saw some of the prices discussed upthread, I'd be tempted (I only said tempted!) to "accidentally" knock a bottle over.

What a shame it would be, though, losing that whiskey!

A few months ago I found a place with some Vintage 21 and 23 Rye on line with very good prices and they shipped. Called and asked how many they had and when the manager emailed me the number I emailed back I wanted to buy them all and would call later that day. When I called they had "decided not to sell". A couple of days later the price changed on line to double what they had been asking. :hot:

My mistake was being too eager.

I talked to the manager of a discount store about prices and I discovered that down here many stores mark up 10 to 20% over double cost. For example, I bought EHTaylor single barrel for 50 bux. Another store had it for 79. The discount guy said that for 50 bux they were still making over 30 dollars a bottle. So the mark up on that 79 dollar bottle is insane. I wish it was because they knew it was LE, but no...all their prices are marked up.

However, there is one store here that prices ALL product based on year and location. So if it's a 18yr bourbon they're going to charge 120 bux by default :(

Also i bought a bottle of PHC 1st ed cask strength for 110 on sale from 169. MSRP was supposed to be 80 bux :(

Finally, keeping on topic with this thread....I passed on WLW 2011 release :)

Can anyone recommend the Black Maple Hill 18YO Rye? I have one bottle bunkered that I bought last week, but it's still unopened, so I've never actually tasted the stuff.

My question pertains more to whether I should clean a place out that has several bottles. I've performed a search here on this whiskey, and it seems that the consensus is fairly ambivalent. Regardless, it just seems that $72 would be a good buy for 18 YO rye, given the current scarcity for the old stuff.

I had never had WT rye 101 until the 81 thread. I bought one bottle to try after reading about its going away. I absolutely love it. It is right up there with AAA and WSR for value pours. Ritt is $22-23 when I can find it, Baby Saz $26-28. I like this better and it's $17.25. I've been buying all I find.

Yes, it is a normal practice. The distilleries are protecting their local retailers by pricing at high enough a level that they are not risking selling at a lower price than the retailers.

I passed on a couple WTKS dark smooth tops from '05 for $60. It would have been the newest and most expensive WTKS I'd bought.

Also passed on a couple handles of Heaven Hill 86 proof from 1985 for $21. I'd imagine this is tasty, but below Evan Williams 7 in the lineup. Probably worth the Jackson, but it's a lot of whiskey if it isn't.

To a certain extent yes, not undercutting the hands that feed them-retailers. But $130? Crazy. MM 46 was low $40s at distillery, mid $30s retail. I would have guessed PHC10 wheated at $90-100 at Heaven Hill before reading this.
