Got bottles of Vintage 17 ($60) and the 21 year Rye ($70). Soon as I opened the Vintage 21, the cork fell into the bottle. I felt like I'd been kicked in the stomach!

Man I cant believe all the people finding Vintage stuff around. Last rye I saw was me drinking the last 2oz of 21 at a bar. Never even seen one on a shelf.

In the past week:

2 bottles of ORVW 10/107
1 bottle of Weller Antique 107

1 bottle of 2009 Four Roses Mariage - Randomly found this on a shelf at a store in Cambridge/Somerville area. I haven't seen any of the Mariage releases in a while. There were 3-4 bottles left. If interested, send me a PM.

Wild Turkey Rye 101 while traveling. They don't sell it locally and I have never seen it on a shelf. The Rittenhouse BIB section was cleaned out, but there were cases of the WT stacked up.

In the past few days I have found and purchased 2x Pappy 15's, 2x Van Winkle 12's, a 2011 WLW, and a 2011 Saz 18. I've also managed to scoop up 12x Founders Kentucky Breafast Stouts.

The alcohol gods have been kind to me this past week. My wallet is hurting but the liquor cabinet is looking delicious.

I picked up a single bottle of THH. I've passed up dozens of bottles while traveling, but there was something about finding it at a local ABC (in a BTAC poor county within a BTAC poor state) that led me to buy it.

Because nobody else in BG wanted the Pappy 23 I left behind on Tuesday, I felt obligated to go back and pick it up today. I have the first pour resting in the glass right now, and am very excited for the first taste.

Several other stores got in the PVW Spring Release, but prices elsewhere were disappointing. One store had the PVW 15, 20, and 23 for $150, $200, and $350, respectively...

x2 Willett 5yr ryes. Looking forward to doing a comparison on this with a 3yr and 4yr rye. Big fan of the 4yr.

The non bourbon pick of the day was a Pyrat Rum Cask 1623. Normally would not have gone for this, but a sample taste of this did me in with convincing, and the price was too good to pass up. Huge nose, perfumes the room when opened.

I didn't actually plan on buying anything. (I know, famous last words), but while waiting for my daughter to complete her dance class, I strolled over to a small liquor store nearby to see what they had. (new owner who seems to regularly find some old stuff in the back room like the late 90s Beam Black 7/90) On the middle shelf, behind a few odd bottles I spied an old dusty (literally) bottle with the tax strip still intact.

A bottle of I. W. Harper Gold Medal, the 4 year 80 proof expression. With only 4 years and low proof, I don't exactly have great expectations for this, but the old price tag was $21 and reduced to $16. When the owner saw me looking at it he said just to clear the shelf space he would lete have it for $10. Well, it seemed worth that peice for the novelty alone, so I took it home.

EHT Tornado x 1
PHC wheated x 2
OFBB 2010 x 1

...yet another expensive day. I could have passed on the Tornado (because I think they'll be around for at least a couple months) and the OFBB, but those PHC's are my consolation prize for missing the Pappy by one day at my favorite store. Fortunately, on many nights, I prefer the consolation prize.

I was searching for PVW 10/107, but had to console myself with a Lot B instead. I would have had a tough time not buying a PVW20 if one turned up, as my budget is kinda tight right now.

In preparation for Passover, I bought four bottles of wine from Israel, and a bottle of slivovitz (plum brandy), because grain spirits are as much against the rules as eating bread for Passover week.

Do you need an intervention if you go to 8 liquor stores in one weekend?

When you start with a single bottle of crown a year ago, it takes a lot of different stores to get a variety. For once I'm looking forward to future business trips as it will give me an opportunity to find some bottles.

2 EH Taylor Tornado for $67 from LB
3 Willett 5yr Rye (Proofed at 121.6, 132 bottles from the barrel)

Around Boston, I find myself visiting dozens of liquor stores. Most have only standard offerings. Those with better/unusual/rare bottles usually have only a few of the special ones, which means that I need to remember which store has which bottle when I'm going back to actually buy it. Sometimes even mundane things, like OGD BIB, are available at only one or two stores that I visit.

I was beginning to think there was no such thing as a true dusty around here, but it turns out I was just focused on the wrong thing. I always looked for 750ml dusties before, but decided I had better chances with smaller bottles that get overlooked behind the counter. Today I proved that theory correct.

I picked up 6 bottles of Old Fitzgerald BIB from DSP-KY-16 and 2 bottles of JW Dant distilled/bottled by DSP-KY-2/16. I'm looking forward to these.

Not much of a wheater fan, but similar JW dant's were a big hit at an informal tasting. Good finds!

Nice finds! I've scored some similar mid-90s OF BIBs. They're very good. Not quite as good as the early 80s glut stuff, but very nice.

I went to a store today to pick up 2 bottles of OWA, just in case they are going to stop making it. While I was there I saw they had about a case of ORVW 10/90, which I do not like, on the bottom shelf; for some reason I decided to get on my hands and knees and look in the back. I see a bottle that is a different color, it is gold, it is ORVW 10/107!! The store did not even know they had a bottle left.

Pretty sweet. I'd rather sip the 10/107 but I find the 10/90 makes a tasty cocktail (Old Fashioned, Mint Julep, etc) and isn't so pricey that you feel guilty. Without strategic markup, it's about the same price as a Maker's.

This I have been curious about. It states on the bottle (but in a rather obscure in the print, not clearly marked as most age stated bourbons are) that it is "12 years or older" Since it is not "Clearly marked" as 12 Year, does that mean it is not "age stated"?

(This is a 2011 bottle, so it is definitely not a "dusty")

I decided my parents needed a bottle of bourbon. My dad doesn't drink and my mom drinks a little bit sometimes, and my dad especially has always frowned upon alcohol, mostly because it makes him feel left out, but now that I'm a dad, they have more reason to make room for my preferences (if they want to see their granddaughter), and now that they have a nice bottle of bourbon, I have more reason to visit. Or at least some relief for when I do... (Actually, I'm exaggerating, I have a pretty good relationship with my parents.)

I could think of no better house bourbon to gift than Four Roses 1B.

I also picked up a Binny's OBSV to take home. Anyone know if Binny's is doing another 4R barrel-picking anytime soon? **cough**Joe**cough** I'm pretty sure the bottles on the shelves have been there for over a year, perhaps two years.

In Montreal for a few days, I picked up Old Fitzgerald's 1849. The choice here is quite restricted, plus I hadn't had it in a while.

To my surprise it's pretty good, with some good complexity and a pleasant, sweet finish. The flavour is fairly mild, not as intense as the S-W (which IIRC was eight years old), but it's good bourbon, better than in recent years (and it trumps MM in my opinion).

Heaven Hill has improved its line IMO in recent years, and maybe the same is happening finally to its wheat-recipe bourbon.

It seems to me that aged rye is going to be much rarer for the next few years and the window to bunker it is closing. The fact that I scoured the valley and this is everything that was available supports this belief. I simply didn't see the downside as I'm in a good position to drink it or use as barter for other labels.

I found some dusties on the outskirts of town.

The first bottle is Rare Breed in a tube. The bottle tag has a copyright date of 2006 so I figure its been sitting there for 5-6 years. At $45 it didn't strike me as a bargain but I thought it would be nice to have and I welcome comments from any long time RB fans.

The second bottle is I. W. Harper 15-year at 80 proof in a bottle with gold squiggly lines. The bottle reminded me some of those old OF bottles and it states it was distilled in Louisville so I'm hoping it's Stizel-Weller juice of some kind. The bottle tag has a copyright of 1998 which would place the distillate at around 1983. It was $60. Unfortunately, I'm simply not familiar with this label and hopefully someone can shed some light on what this is exactly.

The final bottle is Old Weller Antique 107 at 7-years old. It's from Frankfort so I'm pretty sure it's a wheater from Buffalo Trace. Since it was sitting next to the I. W. Harper, I'm figuring it was about as old but I don't know for sure. Maybe from the early-to-mid 90's? I don't know the production history well enough. It was $40.

I was just looking for a thread for reference, and learned some new things myself. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12507&page=2

Hopefully that was for a 1.75 of the OWA! My very basic understanding is that the older bottles from Frankfort have the "No___" in the top left of the label.

It was $40.

The I.W. Harper 15 year was first introduced as part of the Bourbon Heritage Collection in 1994. It was produced at the Belmont Distillery (where the new Bernheim distillery now stands). So... no, it is not Stitzel-Weller.

On sale at Morelli's right now. Booker's is $34.77 right now too and Basil Hayden is $24.77. Buffalo Trace is 17.77 and 1792 is always $18.88. Morelli's generally has some great deals. And the Baker's was $26.77. My bad.

Picked up a bottle of ETL at Weiland's in Columbus, OH. It has been almost a year since my last ETL and I find myself wondering why. I get some maple, caramel, honey, and citrus all beautifully balanced. On one sip, I could have sworn I had bitten into a chocolate covered cherry. Quite a surprise though ETL leans toward subtle rather than surprising. Don't look for the kind of whack up side the head you get with OGD 114. Because of its marvelous QPR, I would even rate ETL a "value pour."

I'm a negotiator/cheap bastard for a living. Morelli's is a gem...but for some people not in a gem of a neighborhood. I happen to like the old Italian East side of St. Paul.

One caveat, remember to bring cash. They don't accept credit cards or debit cards.

Found a bottle of EWSB '01 stamped "Ray's Best Buy," so I thought I'd give it a try. I don't know who Ray is (the place isn't named "Ray's"), but he has pretty good taste. This is the sweetest EWSB I've had. It's still light, as most EWSB seems, but has a very tasty vanilla sugar flavor with just enough oak to keep the sweetness from overpowering. I strayed from EWSB lately having been captivated by bolder pours, but I'm appreciating some of the subtleties EWSB has to offer these days.

Save it until you are ready but don't let it sit on the shelf forever. You might consider working your way through a dozen or so standards (Rare Breed, Kentucky Spirit, Four Roses Single Barrel, Booker's, Baker's, Knob Creek, 1792, Old Grand Dad 114, Buffalo Trace, Blanton's, Old Weller Antique, Elijah Craig, Evan Williams Single Barrel, Rittenhouse Rye, Russell's Rye, etc, etc come to mind) as a primer to get a good education and then pick a good time to crack open the big boy. Enjoy!

They tried. BT f'ed up last year and bottled their OWA pick as WSR. It's still on the shelves. A real shame: the WSR is pretty neutral, but I bet it would have been 300% better at 107pf.

Spent a whole day in Louisville hunting for treasures. After a visit to every store I thought had a chance of having older stock, which looks to be a total of 31, I came up with nothing I expected to find. No DSP-KY-16 or DSP-KY354/414. Nothing but new stock, with barely a faded label to be found.

I was told by the store employees that the distributors keep the stores stocked with new bottles regularly, so the likelihood of finding older stock was low. One store owner said that they, being independent, had a lot of older stock sitting around in the back. Last year someone came in and bought every bottle of it, taking large boxes away of tax-strip dusties.

So, I picked up a total of 3 bottles.
1X Vintage 17 Bourbon: Newer, Wheated Version
1X WTKS Dark Top, 2004 bottle
1X WRMC Four Grain, Batch 2

A little disappointed, but at least I get to try these bottles.

Edited to Add: At least I got to see the Old Fitzgerald distillery and Brown-Forman grounds from afar. It was neat to see the size of the aging warehouses.

If this is the same bottle from your "What Should I purchase?" thread, it is the regular KC, not the Single Barrel.

The Single Barrel has a transparent label, a higher proof and generally costs more.

Got some good tax news--we're getting a refund for the first time in years--and so splurged on an EC18 (1991 barrel date) and an Aberlour A'bunadh. Tried both of them tonight, and while they are both great, I think the EC18 edged out a slight victory. What a nice nose on the EC18.

Really, there's no comparing these two they are so different.

Passed up a PVW15 Spring release. Yes, I know. I do love it. But I've had it many times, and I hadn't had EC18 in ages, & hadn't ever had Aberlour A'bundah.
