Ritt BIB. Again.

I keep buying the bottles with low fills or holes in the bottom. Sucks, but fortunately at $21/btl not too painful to replace.

I did the same thing today. Surprised that of the five stores I hit this week, only one had any -- and a single bottle at that.

I kept it very simple. The quintessential Summer Sipper, FR Yellow Label. Plus, a 1.75 of same to refill as necessary. Also, picked up the last bottle of the local shops Private Selection of FRSB. And finally, threw in a Jim Beam White 7 yr as another Summer Sipper. I'll tell you what, the Beam 7yr over crushed ice stole the show last night while sitting out back. I was very pleasantly surprised at the full nose, flavor and finish it presented. A nice sweetness, with the signature Beam flavor profile present, but not distracting. Extremely easy drinking at it's low proof, but it had enough heft to hold up to the melting ice on the warm evening.

I've been a frugal boy since too many purchases at the Bardstown Sampler weekend but a deals a deal so the last week has seen: WT 101 RYE -$19, WT RB-$29, 4R SB 100 proof-$31 and OGD 114-$21.29. Passed on 2010 Handy at $59 and Wiser's 18 as $33 and some dark sides which I may reconsider.

Got a relative coming in to town tonight who enjoys bourbon more as an after dinner drink than a drink to enjoy on any occasion, so I hunted around for a few things that have a "dessert-like" quality and came home with bottles of Elmer T Lee and Michter's Unblended American Whiskey. Out of the boredom that comes with the lazy days of no new bourbon summer, I bought a Col EH Taylor Tornado. It's my first Taylor but not because I didn't see it at every other shop here but because I didn't believe this mashbill could produce a bourbon I wanted to pay $70 to $85 for. So far, it's nothing more than a finish but it's my first glass out of the just opened bottle. It hasn't a lot of flavor on the palette & the nose isn't present when I open the bottle. At least I have a half of a bottle of WLW 2011 still to drink before I start going through the unopeneds.

The regular Blanton, i.e., not the lower proof green version (80 proof) available in some export markets. This particular barrel is terrific, it has a soft entry and finish, with muted but clean and elegant bourbon flavors. No earthy notes, no dry ryeish finish, which some Blantons have in my experience.

It's interesting to compare it to Rock Hill Farms, a bottle purchased for more money and not nearly as good IMO being a little sharp and spirity.

Every barrel is different ... indeed every bottle (of anything) is, by my lights. Makes it interesting.

The more I drink, the more I realize how dramatically bourbon can vary between barrels. Of course, you have to drink the single barrel expressions to get this. Most companies focus on brand to tell bourbon apart, but it's a great revelation to start to understand that barrel placement trumps mashbill.

I've been trying to hold off on purchases lately. I scored some PHC Golden Anniversary a few weeks ago, and that was sufficient to break the bank until my bleeding knees send me out for more FR!

I've been budget restricted lately, but I stopped into a new store on the way to friends house to pick up a simple bottle to fill out a blind tasting....and hit a gold mine. Even non-SB bottlings can vary, e.g. a recent 4RSB was rich and fruity, (plums, peaches and oranges in a compote), whereas some batches seem thinner, drier or more woody. (I particularly don't like a "fresh wood" taste in spirits, any spirit). They all have the profile so the general market will not notice but for palates drilling down on these the differences are there and many here will agree I know. Some companies seem to attain more consistency in the bottlings, Beam is very consistent I find, especially for the white label and black.

I tried three new stores today, all on the same street, to see if I could find something good/new/different. The first one had the best selection, I ended up taking the JDSB for $48, which is not a bad price for around here. It was either that or the prichard's double barrel for at least $10 more, or the Jefferson's reserve for $50. I let price decide and went with the JD, but I may head back again for the Prichard's. The next store, about two blocks away had OF 86 for $19. I bought it just because I've never seen any OF other than the B-day bourbon and wanted to give it a try. The last store, which wasn't the last one on the street, just the last one I went to today had bulleit bourbon for $35, so I went with that. Of the three, the first store had the best selection.

In the weeks ahead I'm going to have to drive into brooklyn to find some high west and other rare finds.

I'm still not ready to buy whiskey on-line. I don't want to miss the delivery and have to go down to the fed-ex, or ups warehouse to pick it up.

It's been a while since I've posted in this thread. I haven't bought much lately because I'd been trying to make some room in my cabinet by finishing some of my open bottles. Mission accomplished. I ended up creating quite a bit of room in my cabinet, so I thought I'd better fill it up again. Below is a list, and pictures of what I managed to acquire just before, during and after my vacation. I have to be honest and say that the only Jack Daniels that is for me is the Silver Select. The others are for a couple of my buddies that I used to bowl with. Also, one of the liters of HH has found a new home. I should be good for a while, but I've said that before. Cheers! Joe

You won't regret any of those purchases...the FR 17yr OBSV's are really good. They're very different then the standard FR's as they show some wood to them which isn't typical of of FR's. The WTR101 is a very nice rye and I'm sad to see it going away.

In terms of my supply that will last me a couple years if I drink nothing else...I'm on about a 1-1.5 bottle a month consuption rate. We picked some barrels from BT, FR, and KBD at the sampler and the bottles of FR and BT came in at the same time. The one good thing about KBD taking a little longer to bottle is that it gives me some time to recover from this purchase...hopefully it's another couple months! ;)

While there I also picked up the new JJB SB, barrel 45. And with all the talk of summer refrigerated bourbon, I jumped on the bandwagon with HH BIB 6yr. I just put it in the frig, so that will be this evenings pour.

I've seen them in several stores throughout the Chicagoland area. The last place was Woodman's in Algonquin, home of the $21.79 OGD 114 and only 8% tax...which is what I came home with. While there I learned I just missed out on what was their abundant supply of 3 Floyd's Dogfish Head and passed on the remaining Robert the Bruce. And a little more thread drift, for the Illinois SB beer drinkers, the Woodman's in Kenosha Ws. carrries Oskar Blues which doesn't have Illinois distribution yet.

The UPS guy dropped this little gem off yesterday.
It is a bottle of bourbon not blended whiskey.
It states on the shoulder label that it is "A Superlative Blend Of Straight Whiskies".
http://i1079.photobucket.com/albums/w504/ovhWinstonovh/rsz_24_r_002.jpg

Here is the back label, you can see the raised letters on the shoulder, it has the Fed Law warning about not refilling this bottle.
http://i1079.photobucket.com/albums/w504/ovhWinstonovh/rsz_4_r_006.jpg

Here is the tax stamp. I don't know the age of this bottle but it doesn't have any foreign words on it so it must be the bourbon that they sold in the USA before Seagrams discontinued it here.
I assume it is the fore runner to today's "Yellow Label".
http://i1079.photobucket.com/albums/w504/ovhWinstonovh/rsz_4_r_011.jpg

Gillman
07-07-2012, 06:54
Right, except at the time this was bottled, I believe the bourbons were sourced from different distilleries owned by Seagram, each using its own yeast and mashbill. Today, the components of Yellow Label are made in the one house in Lawrenceburg, having been collected so to speak as distilleries in the group closed and were consolidated.

It would be interesting to compare the taste to Yellow Label and also to Small Batch. The colour and age suggest a possibly closer relationship to the latter. And as always, which is better...?

I get the wheated sweetness... but also picking up more of the barrel oak-ness, giving it almost a hint of rye spice. Not nearly as 'simple' as my last bottle, as that one was almost pure thick/chewy sweetness with little else. Really enjoyed this first pour tonight. :)

In addition to the above which set me back about a $100 bucks, I found 5 bottles of a 2004 Tritono Malbac on a back shelf along with a 2000 Montelena Cab at a year 2000 price, great dusty finds, but it was another $200 bucks, but I've found that if you leave stuff you've been looking for on the shelf it's usually not there when you go back.

How much duty did you have to pay to customs, if any?

macdeffe
07-14-2012, 14:31
354 Danish Kroner which is around 60 Dollars. I had one more bottle of white spirits to declare. This might sound like a lot but it's not as some bottlings were gifts and the others were 25-50% of the price they would cost in Denmark. First time I had to pay EVER, but I guess they didn't let me pass as the customs had trainess with them. They were nice and charged everything as it was 40% :-), and I am always a patriot and likes to support my country :-)

(more than I like to support some local importers who are the reason for the high prices here)

FR 09 Mariage
Weller 12yr
Vintage 17yr Bourbon

I'm really excited about the Weller, but not because of the usual reasons. I'm excited because it appears that it has made it into the state finally through normal wholesale channels. I no longer have to lug multiples of it back from when I travel, I can lug other stuff in it's place!!

Great description Dave! It reminds me of a younger Stagg as the proof is a bit lower and the color not as deep. I look forward to a side by side between those two (knowing there really isn't a loser!)

Not today, but Sunday, my wife had to go to Sam's Club to pick up a couple of things. I was surprised when I got a phone call. All at good prices too. What can I say? Ya' just can't look a gift horse in the mouth. I reckon I'll keep her around for another thirty years. Cheers! Joe

Nothing bought today, but did have a unexpected run in with on on my contacts from m favorite local place. Asked if I was interested in participating in some barrel selections they are going to be getting in shortly. Obviously, the answer is yes! They are going to be tasting a ER10, 1792 and a Blantons. I really have high hopes on the Blantons. One of my all time favorite pours was at a bar with a "to die for" tasting bottle. Fingers crossed.

Once again, can't stress enough the importance of getting to know your store's people. They can be very good to you.

I got a 1.75 liter of Eagle Rare for $39. I guess that breaks down to $16.95/bottle. As much as I enjoyed my last 2 bottles of ER I think I might need to go back to grab another one of these.

This is one big ass bottle! It did fit in my cabinet but it makes the BTACs and Willetts look small.

That's a very good price. I happened to find a lone bottle of ER for $14.99 the other day while dusty hunting. I immediately asked the owner if he had anymore, but unfortunately it was the last bottle. I've enjoyed pours of ER before but this is my first bottle.

Wanted to try some new things so:

1792 Ridgemont Reserve
Blantons

and

Redemption Rye

Upon first sample of each, I can say I am not a fan of any of them. Only the Redemption would I say has (ironically) NO redeeming qualities, but neither of bourbons immediately endeared themselves to me.

I haven't been very impressed with the EH Taylor line as I feel the releases have been good, but way overpriced (a sentiment shared by many, I know). I told myself that I wouldn't get the EHT Barrel Proof unless I could walk out the door with a bottle for less than $60 and...well...I found store that had them listed at $54.99 so I bought two.

Haha. I would love to, but I would have to buy their whole counter top, as it's built in. You would think they would have built in a sliding door or something in the back. Oh well, I suppose I have to give them respect for building their counter around the dusties!

What I could do is offer to buy them a new pane of glass so I could go in the easy way.

Just got back from a 3 day work trip on the California coast. I bought a few and left a few bottles I wanted like a Vintage 21 rye. There are a lot of bottles of single malts in these small coastal towns too but I haven't the time, cash nor palette to thoroughly invest myself in that kind of venture. I think there are more single malt dusties than bourbon and rye dusties.

In the end, I got 2 2010 WLWs, a batch 2 of JRPS and in the attachment I was very happy to see these on a couple of shelves, a 2011 Sazerac and a Louisville Weller Centennial. I often wonder if I've walked right past something good like these two and they are sitting like this, camouflaged in a way.

I'll go back in a month or so and if the Vintage 21 is still there, I am going to grab it. It's hard to resist that white wax.
