Passed up a Stagg at $95 and a Weller 12 at $27. But this was the first bottle of Weller 12 I've ever seen locally, and I'll probably go back for it. Is this label enjoying wider distribution lately? Because I've now seen it in several California locations that used to stock WSR or Antique, but not the 12.

Was that bevmo? I'd never seen Weller 12 until a few weeks ago at bevmo for the first time, $27 sounds like the price I saw too. It's weird because they always stocked WSR and OWA but never Welller 12.

Tico, unfortunately the nearest (Santa Barbara) BevMo doesn't carry Weller 12 (or V17, or EC18, or 21st Amendment beers... sigh) just WSR and Antique. I saw the single bottle of the 12 at a local, non-chain store. I'd prefer to shop at the local spot, but having a steady supply of Wellers at BevMo would be great.

It's interesting that months ago there were rumors of Weller 12 disappearing, and now it's not only survived, but apparently reaching new areas. Hopefully it'll stay this way.

Restaurant Man, the next bottling of PVW23 will be a blend (the current/last bottling is still Stitzel Weller.)

As to 600 USD...ouch.

Not sure about that. I read a comment Julian made that they had 100% SW PVW23 blended in stainless that they recently bottled which will last a couple more years. The next blend will not be 100% SW and will contain BT distillate among others but when the SW stock runs out and when the new blend is released, is not known. VW releases only a set amount of bourbon per season so they have stocks that they hold back to ensure a steady stream of products.

And yes, the $600 price tag was absurd and the crazy part is that this store wasn't even in a particularly nice neighborhood, I'm not sure who would buy this.

I'm not sure what you read...but I'm just going off of Chuck's post on John's blog (WhiskeyAdvocateBlog/What's In That Bottle Of Van Winkle Anyway?)

"According to Julian, the Pappy 23 for the next several years is already in bottles and it’s all SW. The next time they bottle it, there will be BT in it..."

Since the next bottling wouldn't be until at least this fall...that bottle should contain only SW. I apologize for belaboring the point, but since we have received a pretty good answer regarding this subject maybe we could go a few weeks without mucking it up again! ;)

Having said that though, aren't we saying the same thing? The $600 bottle that is waiting to plunder some childs college savings fund is all SW, correct?

I would pass, those prices are just too high. I do not care for the Vintage 23 or Rittenhouse 23, too much wood compared to the younger versions. I have been hunting the Ritt 21, but would not pay $200 for it - that is just too much.

Was the Willett 21 cask strength? K&L just released a Willett 21 cask strength wheater that is supposedly from SW. I know a few here have purchased but I haven't seen any thoughts on the juice itself yet.

I saw three bottles of EC 18 today priced at $48. My heart told me to buy one more as I had purchased an EC 18 at another store recently for $46. But my head told me not to buy it. I still haven't tried the EC18 that I already own and I didn't want to have two bottles of something I may not like.

you are not alone in thinking this. I passed a couple of these over the weekend and every time I see one, I think I should pick it up. I happen to like it quite a bit, and the with the knowledge that it will be gone for awhile, makes it harder to pass each time. And it won't e any cheaper in the future.

Maybe later in the summer lull I'll pick a couple up. Been a couple of other priority purchases lately.

Well, you can compare them with the three I just saw at $60 and left on the shelf. They are the only EC18 bottles I've seen at my usual bourbon haunts recently, but I have lots of other expenses (and expensive bottles I want) right now.

I spotted the new Elijah Craig 20 year on the shelf for $120 today...next to a throng of the 18 year for $40.

Aside from two extra years in the barrel, you'd think for the extra $80 we'd at least get a fancy new bottle. Not that I care about such things.

And when you consider that the 18yo might have older whiskey in it anyway, is the extra $80 really worth it?

You really can't blame the guy for this pricing.
These bottles are just inventory items to him and he is just looking to get the current "market" price.

Like most other Michter's, it's all a mystery. Personally, i view it as a novelty more so than anything else. I passed on a bottle of the Michter's 25 rye recently. I would like to try the rye more than I would the bourbon, but I'm not paying the going price to do it.

I passed on a few things today. A lot of Handy. I'm glad it's still out there because if I get in a bind I can always drink that. Also, I passed on more BTAC things, a 2011 Stagg, ER(didn't look for the date), PHC 27, rittenhouse 23, vintage 17 21 23, weller sr older bottlings w age statement, ORVW 10 90 & a lot of Willetts.

Btw, I passed on a 2 yo willett rye that I was curious about. Has anyone had this and how does it compare to the 4yo or the 5yo. I love the the 4 yo and the 2 yo has a proof that is higher than the 5yo which is why I'm curious. Any idea?

Passed on a EC 18 barreled 2/92 after buying a dusty OCPR. I'll probably end up going back and getting it.

The EC18s barreled in '92 have been markedly better than any others I've had. Go back for it.

I also passed on a Michter's 25yo SB $300+. Anybody know much about this bourbon?

I don't know about the bourbon, but I had a pour of the 25yo rye at a bar and it's special. It's clearly from the same stock as VWFRR, either Medley or CoK, and > 110pf if I recall correctly. It really is dynamite, but I wouldn't pull the trigger for the $350 I've seen it around here.

Passed on Templeton Bourbon about 5 times the last 3 days. "Now if you like bourbon, this is really tasty". They must have just gotten this stuff in. Most of the time I just laughed, specifically when I was inquiring about different Willett ryes while standing in front of about 8-10 different willett bottlings. Of course, I should have known the templeton was the next selling point after being shown the willett pot still bottle.
I guess I visited about 25 or 30 shops while traveling the last three days and templeton was pushed on me as a great bourbon more than jack daniel's 2 to 1, hmmmmmmm.

I picked up a few bottles today but more importantly I passed on one.
Elijah Craig 20yo, I looked at it a few times while in the store and the person working there said that there are only 35 bottles of it in MI.
I knew it existed but I don't recall anyone commenting on the taste.
It was priced at $199.99 plus 6% sales tax.
When I got home I looked up the state minimum shelf price, it's $129.97 plus 6%.
Glad I passed on it.
If anyone out there has any reviews let me know, I might go back and try to get it at the minimum.

(a later edit add-on)

Moved my oldest stepdaughter to college today and stopped at a couple of liquor stores on the way home. The only thing I did see of interest was Baby Saz now that might not seem like a big deal but this was in Iowa and 60 miles from home. I didn't think you could get Sazerac Jr in Iowa. Normally I have to go to Omaha to get it and then it's hit and miss. I passed on it because my last bottle was so grassy/hay that I could hardly drink it. Despite the raves that continue to roll in for baby Saz, I have had the same experience with my current bottle. When I first opened it, it had a sappy, gummy profile that was thick with woody grass. It has opened up really nicely, but it has definitely taken months to get as pleasant as it's now drinking.

The Highland Park was definitely the hardest to walk away from at that price.

Agree - I've only seen this below $100 once - and bought it.

The 2011 BTAC is sold out here, with the exception of ER17. Today I noticed that I've been passing up both the 2010 and 2011 releases. I have an open ER17 on its last legs, one of these will probably find a home once it is emptied.

WR Masters Collection Rye priced at $74.95 the lowest I've seen and had $15 on a punch card to drop it to $60.I'm not a WR fan to say the least and not much backround on the rye it was left behind for someone else.

Vintage rye 23 $65. The only other place that I saw carry it sells it for $129.........:banghead:

Ok, nobody move this is a hijacking!!!!

:soapbox:Are you freakin kidding me?!?!? Double the price??? Jesus H. Christ what a gouge. I can see a few bucks but double the price is ridiculous. The past couple of months its been looking like our selection of whiskeys has started to expand but our store pricing still needs a little work. Thank you.

So, why pass it up? I sure didn't - I cleaned out the VB17 wheater and VR21, too (b4 u). How many of the VR23 were left? Once those bottles are gone, you're just never gonna see those prices again.

He does! And, the other guy looks like what I would suppose Fred Thompson looked like 50 years ago.

I passed on several CEHT Tornado bottles, despite the fact it was fairly priced and I really like the whiskey. Makes sense...

HAh! Fred Thompson and Ashton Kutcher...dang! My brother and I need to mix things up a little bit.

Anyhow, I just wanted to weigh in on this conversation....

Belle Meade Bourbon is a brand that was originally produced by my great-great-great grandfather, Charles Nelson, before Prohibition. He produced the original Tennessee Whiskey (before Jack) and was one of the first to bottle at sell whiskey rather than selling by the barrel or jug (1860). The distillery shut down bc of Prohibition. My brother and I have been working the last 6 years or so to resurrect the business. We started out having a contract distillery produce our first brand, Belle Meade Bourbon, because as you all are aware, it takes a lot of time and money to build a distillery, lay down barrels, and not sell until the whiskey is mature. We did not want to start out with an unaged product.

In the process of creating BMB, we spent about a year tasting many different barrels and trying to figure out which ones we really liked, which ones went well together and at what proof. In the end, we agreed on 4 barrels per batch (using 2 different mashbills and 2 different yeast strains) at 90.4 proof. The label we are using is pretty much the original from over 100 years ago. The horses on the label were originally at the Belle Meade Plantation, which was recognized as one of the nation's leading Thoroughbred Farm. The horse on the right is Bonnie Scotland, who was one of the founders of the Northern Dancer bloodline (War Admiral, Seabiscuit, Secretrariat, etc.) and Brown Dick is the name of the horse on the left. The original label had the horses names on it and you might understand why we decided to leave those off.

Hope you'll give it a taste!

And by the way, we now have a property under control and hope to be opening our doors at Nelson's Green Brier Distillery this coming Spring just outside downtown Nashville.

Cheers!

Charlie

"Worth" is so subjective, I know. But, Handy is worth every penny of $99, to me. It's an animal. IMO, it's more worth the $99, than the Bourye is at $55. $99 is a higher price than seen in most places, though, I will admit.

Passed on a Willett 5 year 116 proof bourbon for $45 and an 18 year for $140. Having second thoughts, but I know nothing about it either. Pacific Edge Wine & Spirirts Selection ring a bell? JPS 18: $69
WTR101: $23
EHT SB: $58
FR SmB & SB 2011 LE : $75

Its likely age. The LE SB versions are usually 12+ years and run about $80. Private barrel selections like at Binny's or TPS are cask strength around 8 or so years and usually around $50.

The $50 I would buy to Drink. The Limited edition, buy to flip on eBay. But Seriously, the Limited editions are so much better in my opinion its worth the extra money. Private Barrel selections never seem to match the quality of the LE.

Did the store happen to be in Brooklyn? That's my local spot if it was.
i don't quite understand the difference between the $49 and $75 bottles, but I picked up one of the $49 bottles a while ago, I reached out to Four Roses about it. If they still have the bottles from Warehouse TS Barrel 8-2E, it's a pretty good pour. It's an OBSK recipe aged 10 years, 11 months.
I thought it was a great deal for $49.

Yes, the shop was in Brooklyn and am jealous that you have such a great shop close to you. I went out there during lunch yesterday and will definitely making additional trips when the budget allows. What brought me out there was Weller 12 since I haven't been able find any in manhattan, let alone in NJ but all of the other stuff they had was great and the prices can't be beat.

Glad to hear that I wasn't the only one confused by the 25 dollar price difference on at least very similar bottles. Thanks for the info and opinion on the $49 version. Yet another bottle to add to my list of ones I want to try.

Lot B - $55
PVW 15 - $75
PVW 20 - $130
PHC 1st ed. (but 3rd release) - $100
PHC Golden Anniversary - $160
ER 10/101 - $80
A bunch of overpriced BTAC

...the list goes on an on...but before I get a bunch of PMs, all of these bottles were in Japan (I'm in the US) and the reason I had to pass so many is because my buddy who agreed to bring some back for me can only bring a couple bottles with him and I decided to get some Japan-only labels.

Copper Fox 12-month Rye @ $43

I like the idea that they are malting/smoking their own barley, and have a 2/3 rye, 1/3 malted barley mash bill. I think the high malted barley mash bill would give it more weight in the mid-palate - just couldn't get past the 12-months @ $43 without tasting it first.

If any of the Atlanta metro folks have passed up an EC 18yr in the past few days, could you shoot me a PM about where a bottle may be had?

My buddy's girlfriend called my finance and wanted to get him a bottle since he likes it and its their 18 month anniversary. I passed one up earlier this week, but it was a ways out of town and at this point, who knows if it is still there.

At 250% of what is, in my opinion, an already bloated retail price, it would certainly make it an easy pass. It would make it even easier to decide never to do business with a store that tries to screw people on price like that.

The Heaven Hill gift shop prices are quite inflated compared to retail and other distilleries. Not sure why. I passed on the PHC wheater at that same price there. I knew it was already gone everywhere else too. In spite of adoring the one and only  I bought, just couldn't pay $129 for something I paid $65 for.
