I got a few bottles of this too. On my trip this week to NY, I was actually avoiding going into Manhattan & Brooklyn shops because I thought it would be a waste of time. However, I just happened to take the plunge at this place near Cooper Union and I almost changed my flight and stayed an extra week when I saw 8 bottles of Vintage 21 Rye sitting there. The thing is, I'm also bringing back part of a OWA barrel purchase and it's freaking BTAC time!!! Why does everything have to come out at once when you could buy enough V 21 to last for a few years?
Today, I'm now in Tennessee and I'll wait to post what I've found so far since this post is about the V21.
So Jake, was this the same shop on Broadway?
20 cases? Hmmmmmm...60 bottles? I would've gotten more if they would've shipped but you can't ship out of NYC. I guess, if you don't live there, you could have it delivered to a friend in the city.

Finally got this bad boy from my friend in Japan today. It's a slightly lower proof then the bottles I saw at the store when I was in Japan (but unfortunately couldn't take with me at the time), but I'm elated nonetheless. All I know is that it's bottled by KBD, 17 year old rye @ 103.7 proof. If anyone has any info on the bottle I'd love to hear it. Not a lot online about specific Very Olde St. Nick bottlings.

You had some Lot B pop up randomly, too, eh? What was your bottle code? Mine was B1201312:06K. By some quick research it looks like mine was an early 2012 bottling for the Spring allocation. Although, I suppose it could have been bottled early this year and held for the Fall release.

That's what I thought in the beginning, too. If you'll look towards the bottom of SKU's page over bottle codes, he added an update in March of 2012 for the new bottle code scheme. This is the info I used.

That Baker's is good stuff. It's from the first batch distilled in '85, bottled in '92. I found a bottle of it last year and really enjoyed it - much creamier than any of the more recent Baker's I've tasted. Be careful with the cork, though; mine didn't have a chance and I ended up having to decant the bottle through a coffee filter. You may not be able to avoid the same fate, but at least you'll be prepared!

Evan Williams 2002 SBV. It was silky and very good-tasting, so I went back and got another from the same barrel. Way better than many bourbons double and more the price IMO.

This is a second best (close second) to the best bourbon I bought this year, actually in years, Ancient Ancient Age 10 years old, which cost $18.00 in Bardstown. The EW SBV was only $28.00 in upper New York State.

Nice purchases, William.

I'm never without a bottle of EWB. ETL is great, I wish I could say the same thing about it but it's not easy for me to get. BT and EC12 are also pretty frequent pours for me.

WTRB is the prize of your selections though, IMO. Let me know what you think of it! I think you'll appreciate it, it's pretty rye-forward.

Should have elaborated, Yellow Label, Small Batch and OBSV Single Barrel. Recognize that most any shop carries the first two, but still better than what i've found at some of the other tours and gift shops (i'm looking at you Buffalo Trace!).

Maybe i've just had a couple of bad days there. Once last fall and once again this spring, only BT and Bourbon Creme. Which had me baffled given how open they are about all the great brands they bottle. I had hoped to pick up ETL or ER the days i visited and ended up at my local liquor store in Louisville in order to buy.

I live in a control state (Oregon), and the limited release stuff can be really hard to get here. However, I got sent to Madison, WI last week for work -- just in time for the 2012 BTAC release! I ended up with 2 WLW, 1 Saz 18, and 1 FRSmB LE 2012. I would have loved to have picked up a Stagg, and I saw several, but at 142 proof it's considered hazardous material by the FAA, so I could not have legally brought on the plane (even in a checked bag.) I was also tempted by a bottle of Smooth Ambler 19 year, but I figured I had probably indulged as much as my wife would forebear. All the bottles made it back fine, wrapped up in my clothes. Really happy with the haul, should tide me over for a long time. Can't wait to try 'em!

Sorry, Madisonites, to have absconded with that rare bottle of Saz 18.

Called ahead to a store while I was on a road trip, asked for GTS. Lady says she has one on stock, will hold it for me for a few hours.

I get there, check the shelf and a GTS 12 is sitting on the shelf. Think nothing of it (other than the lady didn't keep her word), and go to check out. Behind check out is another GTS with my name on it. I tell the cashier I'll take both, and then I read the proof on the 2nd - 143! Great day when an unexpected GTS 10 finds its way into your bunker.

This cannot be accurate. They don't break up cases, so that would mean there were only 8 cases to your enormous state. So your store got at least two cases, leaving the other 6 cases to divvied up between all the stores in Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, etc.

What he probably meant was that his distributor got 24 bottles. Or maybe he meant 24 cases.

Was up in Vermont trying to scrounge up cans of Heady Topper (aka the finest regular-production beer in America) at a liquor store. They were limiting purchases to two 4-packs per group so an older employee told me to hang back from my friends so we could sneak out a little extra. While I was waiting I started chatting with him to appear as alone as possible and noticed a few bottles of the E.H. Taylor tornado bottling sitting on the floor of the shop. So he goes on a roll about bourbon, shows me the shop's BTAC stash, complains for a really long time about how they don't get as much as they used to, and I end up with a completely unplanned WLW (I couldn't pry away the one Saz 18 they got as he was keeping it for himself). It's amazing what you can accomplish by being friendly with the store owner. I've had that scenario happen a few times as well. The best example was when I was visiting a brewpub once and everyone told me to ask for the brewmaster once I got there. So eventually I did, and before I knew it, he was leading us on a guided tour of the brewery and pulling samples from several barrels of his experimental beers that were aging in the cellar.

How was the Heady Topper? One of those beers that I've always wanted to try.

I picked up a bottle of K&L Wines's hand-picked Rock Hill Farms. My expectations weren't too high as I've always found RHF very solid, but not distinctive. This bottling, though, is something different. Instead of the sweetness and cherry flavors I've gotten in other RHF, this one smells and tastes like apples. It's not a flavor I can remember finding in bourbon before, and it's terrific. I don't know how old RHF is, but I can also make out some young-ish, grainy tastes in this version. But it plays nicely with the apple flavors.

Overall, I'm happy. If you like the sweetness of standard RHF, this version may not be your thing, as it's pretty crisp and spicy. If you're looking for something unique, it may work for you. I just wish RHF were a bit less expensive.

Yes, grossly overpriced at $74.95, and I really don't even care for regular Elijah Craig. But I don 't think this available in the general marketplace. I do plan to drink it as I am not a collector and subscribe to the theory that bourbon is made tone consumed.

I picked up a WT Tradition in a schmancy wooden box.

Also: Tempus Fugit Creme de Menthe, Del Maguey Chichicapa Mezcal, and some Bittercube Blackstrap bitters.

I will be combining them all into the worst cocktail ever.

Today I finally got PHC 6th Edition! So to my Dallas/FT folks...it's gotta be at your store somewhere. I had to inquire about it as it wasn't on the shelf. I left two others behind.
I also got a 350ml of OWA with the 7yr AS.
A bottle of Willett Family Estate 6yr (119 proof)
A bottle of Rittenhouse Rye BIB for the bunker.
And...a bottle of Henry McKenna 10yr Single Barrel BIB for the helluvit. Not a bad pour actually.

QQ: Does anyone know where Willett is sourcing their Family Estate stuff the 6 and 7 year? I tasted the 7 year yesterday and I cracked open my new 6 year today and BOTH whiskeys numb the inside of my mouth. GTS and WLW do not do this...but these Willetts do O_O

No one knows the provenance of any specific Willett barrel, except maybe the person who selected the barrel. It could be from any of the Kentucky distilleries... if you have bottles from two different barrels, they could easily be from two different distillers.

how old is this bottle? And any tasting notes? I almost picked up one of these at the BHC recently but went for the new PHC instead. Just curious as I've heard great things about these bottlings.

Hmm. I've had both the 4 and 5 year ryes and the 5 in particular is very tannic and numbing. And, i've hears similar comments about other KBD products (particularly Kentucky Vintage and Pure Kentucky XO). I wonder if this is reflects their preferences or if it's more of a coincidence.

Thanks for the tip, Joe. Actually, NONE of them are available in my area. I wish they were. I just got back from a trip down to Waco, TX. When I stopped back by a dealer here in my area, I found out he can't even ORDER either of these, nor can he order the EW BIB. He CAN get Old Granddad BIB, and JW Dant. I was so disappointed. I wish I had bought all the guy in Waco had, now. :banghead:

It's not unheard of. i went into a hole-in-the wall and found 2011 GTS, 2010 WLW still sitting on the shelf next to VW Lot B. This was in the beginning of this summer. So these were clearly missed (except when I found them ;) )

Most of you that have been here a while know I love wheaters. For some of you newer members, I love wheaters. I procured a few more wheaters in the last couple of weeks or so. Pic below.

As a little side note here, when I added these bottles to my spreadsheet, I checked to see what percent of my stash is wheaters. Roughly 40% of the bottles I have are wheaters. Not bad. The surprise came when I checked my BIB's. 25% of my bottles are BIB's. Wheaters and BIB's. Don't get much better than that Vern.

It's always possible that a distributor set some of the product back for Restaurant customers and never received orders and then cleared the stuff out to stores right before the 2012 release. I bugged the crap out of my local store in April of this year to get me another bottle of 2011 ER17 and they called me up and said it had arrived and to come pick it up. I get there to find a Fall 2008 release ER17. No complaints by me as the 2008 got very good marks and I was excited to try a different "vintage."

This week, I was traveling in an area new to me and made a few stops along the way. The story from the shop owner was that he was interested in selling some up market products a couple of years ago but his customers didn't go for it in his small town. The WLW was sitting on a shelf next to a Handy since 2010.

Yep. Yesterday I bought a Binny's selected Knob Creek SB Reserve (barrel 153-sample 153A) with a $5 off coupon. Had some the last two nights and it is the best Knob Creek I've ever had but I still enjoy OGD 114 a bit more. Also grabbed a '12 WLW and Larceny within the last week. Couldn't pass up the Larceny on sale at $18.99.

I've been looking for the FRSB LE2012 with no luck. I have asked two store owners if they would work on this for me. I've got my fingers crossed.

In the meantime, I lucked out. Four Roses' facebook page told me that Jim Rutledge was at Chuck's Liquor store in Bowling Green, KY yesterday. I asked my brother to stop by. He got a chance to talk with Jim. Unfortunately, my brother isn't a bourbon drinker so Jim was talking over his head. They talked for five minutes and no one was around. He said Jim would have talked all night if he could have stuck around. I'm so jealous right now. It would have been awesome to meet and speak with Jim.

At any rate, my brother picked up a FRSB LE 2012 and a FRSmB LE2011. I asked for a SmB LE2012 but he took what Jim gave him. Jim politely signed my bottles. He even put well wishes on one of them for me and my wife's 15th anniversary that we just had two days ago.

I feel your pain - I have a monthly budget (or allowance), and I have to save up for the fall when the good stuff comes out. I wound up spending more than I planned in Kentucky at the festival this year, so I put myself on a self-imposed ban for the rest of this year - except for some previously made arrangements. Already had to pass on some lovely stuff - but there will be more next year I'm sure!

I bought a Four Roses Single Barrel yesterday, personalized by Jim Rutledge. I got to meet with him at the Louisville Rd Chuck's in Bowling Green.

I got the chance to learn some great information from him regarding the plot of how the whiskey absorbs the wood sugars through the years, and how once the whiskey absorbs all the wood has to offer you only have around 6 months before the whiskey starts taking on the tannins and goes downhill.

I also talked to him about the 17yr gift shop bottle I finally opened last weekend. His comment was that he felt those 17 year old barrels were some of the best he's found.

Jim is a pleasure to talk to, and obviously knows his stuff.
