Was just reading a message on a Yahoo discussion board. The poster says he received a newsletter from Park Avenue Liquors (NYC) in which they claim to have the new Stagg release...for $100/bottle! Another poster said he bought a couple bottles of Stagg just a few weeks ago in Massachusetts.
First, has the new Stagg indeed been released? Secondly, Park Avenue Liquors is notorious for their sky-high prices, but $100 for Stagg is a bunch of http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/horseshit.gif

I heard from them (Park Ave) a few months ago that this release was going to be 'significantly' higher priced that before. But I don't know if that was just them or an overall markup in price for Stagg all over. Heck, I didnt even know they got it in already. This should prove to be interesting info either way. Thanks for the heads up!

I'd pay $100, but only because I've never tried Stagg. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/banghead.gif
But you guys are right, for that money I'd rather have the new Pappy 23.

One problem with the possiblity of the new Stagg being $100 is that I probalby will still buy one, because it is worth it. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif I was just overjoyed that the first expression was NOT charged what it was worth, and accordingly was a great value too. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/toast.gif
The old Pappy 23 was a lot more than $100 a bottle. Does the new one "only" cost $100? http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I think it will cost the same or even more than the last one since there supposedly is going to be alot less of this one... I think somewhere around 700-800 bottles instead of 3300 like the original.

That part I don't know yet--but Pappy 20 was $52.39 in Montgomery County, MD last December during their holiday sale...I would hope the 23 isn't TWICE the price.
http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/toast.gif
$52.39 is a steal for Pappy 20, you should have gotten a few of them! http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/yum.gif The Pappy 23, as a guess, will be somewhere around $140 give or take... And that's if it is priced somewhere around the last release.

I do NOT think that the stock to which you refer is the 2003 Stagg. Park Avenue purchased some 2002 Stagg in Europe and had it shipped back to NY. I, too, heard from them (when I was buying my Park Avenue Van Winkle) that this "newly found" stash of 2002 Stagg would be priced at something like $100 a bottle.
Cliff is right on the money. Park Ave did not tell me the whole truth a few months back. All they told me was they were getting in Stagg later in the year and it will be much more expensive than the last time they had it. I checked this morning and in fact this is the 2002 release that they got from Europe and are charging that much for it due to their shipping costs, taxes, etc... For those who did not get a chance to get a bottle and are willing to spend the $100 you can call Park Avenue Liquor Shop (http://www.parkaveliquor.com/parkave/html/) at (212)685-2442. Try asking for Irving, Michael or Scott. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/toast.gif

I guess the big question now is if there will be a new George T Stagg? If so and they don't do something like give it a year or a different proof or label, things could get messy for the newcomers who read about stagg in magazines (and i have seen it in a few of them) and go looking for it...

Good point Chris. Let's hope BT labels the 2003 differently in some manner. Of course, if the proof is different this year, that alone would be sufficient to distinguish the first two bottlings.
Let's hope BT labels the 2003 differently in some manner.
How about "2003 Whiskey of the Year"? http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
To make this clear. What we now have in stock is the original bottling of the Stagg. We purchased a supply from Europe (90 bottles!). Due to the value of the dollar and the addition of another middle man the price (including our normal mark-up) jumps from $50 to $100. Many of the bourbons lovers who are looking for this bottling are willing to pay this price - how many other shops have this in stock?
So when you look at this item from a retailers point of view it is no longer http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/horseshit.gif but http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/drink.gif

I really appreciate it when people in the industry take the time to post here. Your perspective can be very enlightening.
I imagine it must be quite expensive to maintain an extensive inventory of pricy spirits, some of which may not move too quickly. Although it is great (and rare) to find something priceless in a "off the beaten path" store that has been on the shelf for a decade and still has the old price; it's also nice to know there is someplace where we can get something that is hard to find.
I hope you will review our boards peridically and post when it strikes you fancy.
I just checked the 8/1/03 price list for the WV ABCC and Stagg is still listed. If I remember correctly, after taxes, it is about $40 or $42 per bottle.
If you are still dying to get the original Stagg, send me a PM. I can call the liquor store near my parents' house and see if the state warehouse has any left.
I will be leaving WV tomorrow and may not be back for a couple weeks, so it may be a few weeks before I can get a "collectible bottle" to you.
I agree with you Blackkeno. Park Ave is THE NY liquor store where I KNOW if there's something hard to find, if anyone has it, they do. We also must keep in mind that their overhead, ie rent, has to be high and factored into their prices for them to remain in business.
Previous contacts by phone with one of the owners has always been positive, I have always found him to be extremely helpful and accomadating.

I just called and placed order for Stagg, can't find it any place else. Also, they had 2 bottles of 12YO WT @ $60, which I ordered. I spoke with Irving, he said they thought they could get more of the WT if anybody was interested. To fill out order to even 1/2 dozen, I added 2 more bottles of OFBB. I hope my wife does not look too hard at next month's credit card bill....
I just had my wife pick me up a bottle of OFBB this morning from there to be opened tonight since I finished my Van Winkle 12 and Bakers already... The WT12 year that you got I think is going to be the older bottling I have wrote about before. (the one that looks ugly with the gold label) After doing a tasing between this one and the newer 12 year i found the older one to be better. It should come in a cardboard cylyndrical tube as well. Seems like you have quite a nice order coming your way, enjoy! http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/toast.gif
Oh, here's the 12 year WT I think you'll be getting. Let us know what you think of these bottlings when you try them.

Sorry...$100 for Stagg, no matter what the circumstances, is not http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/drink.gif
It may not be http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/horseshit.gif, but at the very least it is another example of how the laws of supply and demand are used to drive up prices (and, in fairness, makes up for those times when those same laws drive prices down).
Neverthless, a 100 percent increase from the original price? Hmmmm... http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/skep.gif
But, hey, if you can find enough folks to shell out 100 beans for Stagg, more power to ya'. My biggest concern is that if you are successful in selling your stock at $100, the folks at BT--seeing the success you had at selling Stagg at a price point more than double the original--will raise the price point of the next release to a similar level.
Yes, that may be how business works, but it still sucks...IMHO.

Mighty CL has struck out. The WV ABCC warehouse is officially out of the first year of GTS. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/banghead.gif http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/banghead.gif http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/banghead.gif
It was a good run while it lasted.
Cry me a River! Everytime I walk in a liquor store I wait until I am sure there is No GTS before I make selections. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/toast.gif
Sorry you're stuck with the rest of us here in the Stagg-less hell. You get used to it http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Sorry you're stuck with the rest of us here in the Stagg-less hell.
Nah, I am only in Stagg limbo. I still have 6 3/4 bottles left in my stash. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Yeah, but just knowing you can't get more has driven many a bourbon lover to take a flying leap from the 25th story. "I shalt not live in a world without Stagg" you can hear them repeating right before the "splat" http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

Thanks for your efforts CL. All my research led me to GTS and now I'm downhearted about not being able to get any. But I've come up with some good out of the bad. More room in my suitcase for Van Winkle.
