Based on SMOWK's recommendation I picked up a current (meaning 2012) OGD 114 even though I have a few in the bunker that I bought in 2010/2011. He swears that stuff bottled in the past year tastes different than stuff bottled even a couple of years ago. He's consumed enough of it that I would guess he knows!

Is it a bourbon? I'm guessing not, but that it is close. I've never heard of it.

Templeton is very mild compared to Rittenhouse. Go with the Ritt but make sure you get the 100 proof bottled in bond, not the 80 proof stuff. Ritt BIB is bold and tasty.

People post in these threads regularly but they're not created each day - they are created when the season changes, which happens to have been today. They're created by whoever makes the first post after remembering it's time for a new one.

Happy Spring!

And $37 for a 10 year Willet release sounds like a good deal. I think I paid $50+ for a 9 year last fall.

That is a great deal. Im looking at the willet barrel selection program wholesale pricing sheet (for Kentucky) and the wholesale bottle cost is closer to $50 than to $40.

Not today, but this past weekend: OF 1849, FR gift shop bottling (12yr 10mo OBSO), and family-sized bottles of VOB BIB and BT gift shop bottling. The 1849 was a big surprise. Very tasty, especially for the price. Didn't expect a lot from that one given my experience with VSOF (good but expensive for what it was), but the 1849 delivered!

Brian, I think yours is the 3rd positive comment from someone lately, on the 1849. That's a great sign. That label has really been dog-cussed since they removed the age statement several years ago. Young, thin and hot were the primary descriptions of it (If you're listening Squire, No, I'm not describing all of your girlfriends...;)). Glad to hear that you and others are enjoying it again. Great label, with a lot of history and great whiskey that has gone into it over the years. I don't see it much, if any, down here. But, I'll put it on my "to grab" list next month in Bardstown.

I only picked it up because it's not available here and I'd never tried the HH version. Didn't expect much but thought it was worth a shot at $16 (Toddy's price). It was well worth that and now on my list of great value pours. Since it's not available here, I'll likely pick up one or two more over Sampler weekend. Hopefully this is another sign that things are changing for the better with HH wheaters.

Old Forester Signature 100 proof. Bought this in Montreal and encountered a particularly good bottle with clean rich nutty flavors, very smooth even though that word should be inapt as applied to a drink one-half of which helps power stock cars.

The recent discussion about Pappy 23 reminded me that fine bourbon is available for far less money than that rarity goes for, and the OF 100 is as good if not better IMO.

I will definitely let you know... after I've had a chance to spend some quality time with it.

From the first sip I took all I can say is it is very different from any other bourbon I have tasted up to this point. There is a flavor or some flavors in there that I have never encountered. It's very intriguing.

It makes me think of corn, plain old raw corn.

The recent discussion about Pappy 23 reminded me that fine bourbon is available for far less money than that rarity goes for, and the OF 100 is as good if not better IMO.

Gary

Count me as an OF fan. OGD BIB for that matter, too. I keep OF Signature as one of my standards. I recently read an article discussing Brown-Forman's aversion to producing OF in a bonded offering, and was actually pleasantly surprised to come across two bottles of OF BIB recently. Also grabbed one bottle of the OF 86, all of these older bottles had the paper label.

I think it is unclear whether OF Signature is not bonded. IIRC, at one point B-F stated that the term bonded was not considered meaningful for most current consumers, so the designation was finally removed (a few years ago), but I don't think they said it no longer met the requirements for bonded bourbon. Or perhaps they did, can anyone clarify?

Picked up my first AAA10* in SC, found a UD OC10 from '97 in NC, and 2 bottles of 17 year 147.5 proof Abraham Bowman in VA. Didn't spend much time hunting, so I feel pretty lucky.

Nice little haul. Is the Abe Bowman 17 pretty easy to find in VA ABCs, or is it really sporadic?

I think I got lucky, have heard they are pretty easy to find around the time it's released, but I think it's been awhile since they put one out. I only went to the 1 VA ABC store on my trip.

Found several 2012 WLW (123.4 proof) in the wild today for a pretty good price and was tempted to pick up several bottles but decided to just get one since I already had a couple put away. Also picked up a Warehouse C I found at the same store and a Woodford MD Four Wood even though the reviews have been a bit spotty. Figured despite the rather high price I should judge for myself!

It was indeed in the Atlanta metro area. I was surprised by it as well. The manager or possibly owner (I didn't think to ask) mentioned he got one of the last allotments in the city. No idea if that is true. Might have been a few bottles that got temporarily lost in the back of a distributors warehouse for all I know.

BTW I was PM'd by someone wanting the location but apparently they are too new to receive PMs (which is odd since they sent one to me) or haven't set up there profile to receive them so that is why I haven't responded. Sorry about that!

From the front they looked just like regular FRSB until I took it off the shelf and it had a sticker on the back saying that these came from a barrel selected by Kroger. So it's not a Private Selection where they do it barrel strength (I do have a 14 year OBSK like that), but it's still a damn good value for FRSB which usually runs $11 more.

Picked up an EC BP, opened it at the store and gave each of the owners a taste but didnt get to taste myself as I was headed to the gym. I have taken some time building a relationship with them and they have hooked me up with some very tough to find bottles, this seemed to go a long way with them, they seemed surprised that I was willing to share, I hope they remember next fall.

Alden, is this the first Barrel Proof bourbon that you have tried?

Yes, I believe it is.

Is WT 101 BPB? If so, then this is the second.

I'm pretty sure that Wild Turkey comes out of the barrel at right around 108 proof (as in WTRB). So WT 101 is almost barrel proof, but not quite.

Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve for $45.99. Could'a fooled me that its 120 proof since it goes down so easy. Great bourbon, but at this price I may not buy another.

Drop hints and continue to patronize this location. If they are not bourbon aficionados, give them tips on new releases and follow up to see if your tips/suggestions are selling. If they are, then outright ask for a bottle of pvw/btac when they arrive.

Also do all of your booze shopping there. Even if beer is a few cents more than the local big box grocer (who treats it as a loss Leader/shelf filler), Grocers sell beer at close to cost, most liquor stores cannot operate on such small of margins.

That probably 'splains the heat you're getting. The barrel proofers take some easin' in to, and can be dang near nuclear right off the bat. But, it's not simply the alcohol. It's the unadulterated, full blown whiskey flavor that is powerful, as well. Enjoy...with care!

Where would that 'worth it for regular purchases' line be for you and KCSB?

If you could get it for, say, $35.99, would that change your long-term commitment prospects?

(I will admit that this is not entirely hypothetical in my case).

Eric, That's a price a bit on the high side...it's $39.99 here and and sometimes on sale for less....but at 9 years and almost barrel proof...not out of line with recent releases...such as the recent Russell's Reserve, CEH Taylor and EC 12. Why some are loading up on the bargains that are left.

Yes, at $35.99 I would definitely buy it again. Not having a lot of disposable income I can't afford to "splurge" like this very often. My price range for bourbon is generally $30 or less.

No, it isn't a ridiculous price, just more than I can afford to buy regularly. Very good whiskey!

I picked up a WTRye101 today for $25. He only had the one bottle, and kind of hidden on the top shelf at that-- I almost missed seeing it.

Just now bought GTS and THH 2012 and also found two PHC without barrel labels?! I think it is 2012 though. Wonder if it is safe to assume it is the first round bottling.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure all the label issues were on the 1st dump. One of my 1st dump bottles was double labeled.

Got a high west campfire and Weller antique 107 for a camping trip next week. Tried a swig of each. Lots of peat in the campfire and the Weller is great. Might be a go to soon. Love me some Weller 12 yr.

Great. Thanks. Then I have the first two dumps of PHC2012 which some said are the better two.

Anyone ever heard of this? I'm curios about corn whiskey, never had one before.

Just scored a bottle of the Elijah Craig barrel proof for only 29.99! I had not been planning to purchase this but when I saw the price I just had no choice. ;-)

So, I heard this was not good on ice, so should I just add a splash of water? Thanks for any thoughts.

In an attempt to be optimistic I picked up a bottle of the regular EC12 to compare to the barrel strength. Even though I don't have the ECBS yet...

Also picked up an OWA for the GBS blend and a local store selected FR single barrel OBSV at 100 proof and 9 years, 2 months. Was able to get a taste before and it seemed to be pretty good!

Met up with Aaron today at the South Loop Binny's for some on tap 2010 Goose Island Bourbon County Stout and walked out with a current vintage 2012 OGD 114 too.

The tap rooms in some of the binnys make for a scary combination, a couple of beers and I begin loosening my inhibitions for buying everything!

This is not an accident... I think they do it on purpose! Still, I was somehow able to prevent myself from buying anything. It's a good thing too, because tomorrow is their bi-annual 15% sale. No boozing at the bar needed to get me in the mood to purchase!

Of course, that's not to say a visit to the bar is not on the menu...
