View Full Version : What whiskey have you bunkered the most?

While bourbon browsing today I watched someone buy 10 bottles of JPS 18. Which made me immediately look at what I had deepest in my bunker. To my surprise it was WT rye 101, I thought my old label WSR buying spree would have put it over the top.

Well I just found out from one of the people here that OGD may be watering down their 86 proof (to 80) of which a bottle I obtained yesterday and much approve, so I may be going back to the same store and buying a few more of those.

For me I am deepest bunkered on BTAC and PVW,both of which are becoming increasingly more expensive and more difficult to find.I do also have quite a few W12's and Ritt BIB's that have been picked up while on sale for a rainy day.You never know when or why things may change and they are both cheap insurance.

PVW20 by single type, but if you include a mixed line, the the PHC takes the lead, I think that numbers around 15.

I don't bunker uber-multiples of a single release or product, but by distillery I've got more Four Roses bourbon than any others (followed by the various Van Winkles and BTAC releases, I'd guess).

Seven deep. EC12 (couldn't resist @ $20ea [dry well now, tho]) and TPS selected FR1B. May go that far on $34 Blanton's (for the cork collection), too. $16 WT101 is calling me now. . . I guess I only dig deep for value.

FR SB and Willett Family Reserve. You never know what you're going to get (Hill, Trace, Beam, Barton, etc.) with the Willetts. It's fun to try and figure out where the juice is from (its almost always good, too).

I've also started to bunker some of the better cheaper stuff (Weller, VOB) as a hedge against rising prices.

Good question. For me, the answer is probably the 2002 Old Forester Birthday Bourbon. Bottled at 13 years old, it is one of my two or three all time favorites.

Another significant presence in my little bunker is Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit. But I would really need to sort through things to see what all is in there. My "bunker" is not really a place, I just have various things sitting around in various places.

I don't bunker much modern stuff except maybe a half-dozen bottles of Pappy 15 & 20. I pick up any WT stuff from the 90s when I find it. But I do pick up most of the 80s and 70s stuff I find because I know I may not find it again.

I don't think I really bunker, I open and drink/share what I buy, when I get to it. I currently only have one "duplicate" bottle. It's a 2012 BTAC WLW. I've got a few unopened bottles, but they aren't duplciates and will be opened soon-ish I just haven't gotten to them yet. I usually only buy multiple bottles at a time on limited release stuff (BTAC) or if it is somethign i buy regularly and is on sale or hard for me to find like Weller 12.
Not sure if this would be considered a bunker or not but here is a list of what I currently have waiting to be opened:

JPS 18 L&K Single Barrel Selection
Elmer T Lee L&K Single Barrel Selection.
Four Roses Barrel Strength OESO L&K single barrel selection.
Bernheim L&K Single Barrel Selection.
Four Roses Small batch gift set with the bottle signed by Jim Rutledge
Weller 107
Larceny 1.75 (still working on the 750)
2012 BTAC WLW

I think this is really what got me putting things away this past year. We're buying a new house, thinking about having a kid. I'm never going to have fewer financial responsibilities than I do today, so why not pickup the best stuff I can and know that I can always pull out a special or old (or old and special) bottle whenever I want?

Of course, a house and some kids probably won't keep me out of the whiskey aisle. Might even send me there more often

The only bottles that I have more than 2 are GTS, and Makers Mark, and the only reason for the Makers Mark is that I have a couple "souvenir" bottles from when my wife and I visited the distillery and dipped them ourselves. I am in awe of you guys with 6+ multiples, especially the Pappy 15, BTAC, and PH.

Not sure how many bottles you need to have set aside to be considered bunkered but I have a few WTR 101's, a couple of OWA with the age statement in the bottle with the parchment label, a couple of WSR's with age statements, a couple of WT101's with the old label, a couple of JDB in the old bottle and labels, and just recently added a couple of OGD86's. I know it pales in comparison to the other collections that have been described but I don't have the willpower to keep from opening the high end bottles that I buy.

I'm surprised as I look back at my list that my most bunkered brand is Four Roses with 7 bottles (2x Gift Shop 17 year, 1x Gift Shop 13 year, 3x SmB LE 2012, and 1x 120th Anniversary).

Most bunkered distillery has to be Buffalo Trace with 17 bottles (4x Sazerac, 2x THH, 2x GTS, 2x WLW, 2x BT, 2x Weller 12, 1x OWA, 1x CEHT SmB, 1x ETL)

Surprised no one else has mentioned this one yet: Evan Williams Single Barrel.

Ok, technically, I only have one from each year, but its 9 bottles total 1994-2002.

I've had bottles of EWSB prior to the 1994, back when it was packaged with a nice rocks glass, but that was before I started to bunker, man I wish I still had some older year's bottlings and not just the rocks glass!

I did this with wine right around the time my girl was born.

Have five WTR 101, and seven 750's and three 1.75 of OWA (based on last year's "scare").

Given my O.C.D., I HAVE to have at least 2 of every bottle I like....that way I never open the "last" bottle of something.

I too am a fan, but since I just got into this hobby, I'm late to the game. I have the EWSB 96, 97, 98, 00, 01, 02.
i also bunker BTAC; THH x 4, GTS x 4, WLW x 1, ER17 x 2, Saz18 x 1 (1 open on the bar of each). Would love to bunker Pappy but that is hard to do.

I'm not big into the whole "bunkering" thing. However, I do have one bottle stashed away of Knob Creek Single Barrel. It has some sentimental value as I helped choose the barrel. Also, I have two bottles each of Weller 12 and 2003 Evan Williams Single Barrel (both bottles from barrel #21). That's the extent of my "bunker".

Don't feel bad. At the moment my "bunker" consists of a bottle of Willett Rye. I think I have about 20 open bottles, if you count only rye and bourbon.

At the moment.... nothing. I've drank what I had down, and I only have a bottle or two on hand these days. I can't justify tying up that much money anymore. If I get a hankering for something, I just go get a bottle, drink it, then get another as the need arises.

It's funny I have all the years from 1986 - 1995 including 4x - 1986 and 2x - 1987 and 1x the rest. I didn't really save them on purpose but ran across them over the last year. I haven't actually tried these older ones but decided to save them for gatherings in the future. Since 1996 on, I have gotten each year and drank them but not bunkered any.

Good on you for being ahead of the curve. Some of us are new to the game with very thin bunkers and wishing we had gotten in sooner. However there are many on this Board who are VERY generous and it is encouraging to see the support for those like me who are late to appreciate our American Spirit.

No point, just saying congrats on being in ahead of the new wave of "converts" like me who wish they had a bunker and are dependent upon the generosity of others to even see some of the old stuff. If that sounded jealous then it was not intended that way. Just one of the unwashed masses with my face pressed against the glass looking in and wishing I had gotten on the bandwagon earlier.

How many of those are your own selections Bob? Very impressive Probably close to a third to half I have personally been involved in picking. All of the others with the exception of the Mariage/LE SmB/40th/100th are private barrel selections that if I didn't participate in, I personally know the people who selected them. FR's is hands down my favorite distillery going right now. After I took the picture, I reorganized them to bounce what was in the picture off my spreadsheet and I came up 3 bottles short...panic set in as 2 of the 3 that I was missing were OESO's from my favorite barrel...I found them upon tearing through a couple of my "PRIORITY" boxes! :D

For me, "bunkered" means I have at least 5 bottles of it. That way I can enjoy it or trade away without worrying about running low. My single largest type is WLW. I have 20+ bottles total, but I don't have 5 bottles of any single year. Others include:

PVW15
ORVW107

I think by volume, for my ND-era Old Taylor and DSP-KY-16 Old Fitz BIB are in the lead for me. (Lots of hard dusty searching went into finding those.) Just in terms of single distillery, I'm heaviest on Stizel-Weller with Wild Turkey in a close second.

Ritt 23 yr and EWSB Vintage 2000. The Ritt 23 yr is always good to finish the evening. Not much of a bunker but I hope the EWSB Vintage 2000 last long enough for another good year to come around.

I liked my first bottle of FRSB so much, I ran back to Binny's to buy three more bottles from the same barrel: ME / 8-5R

Good stuff!

I did an inventory and updated my spreadsheet yesterday. I decided to break it down a little just to see just what was what. No big surprises. Mostly wheaters and BIBs.

Just under 50% of what I have are wheaters. The largest number of wheaters I have, are of course Wellers. I have 32 bottles of Weller, 13 of which are Weller 12's. Just under 25% of my bottles are BIB's. The most of those I have are 10 JW Dant's and 8 AA's.

I bunkered 15 bottles of Wild Turkey 101 Rye when it was announced it was going to be discontinued. I also keep a good stock of Rittenhouse Rye, Pikesville Rye, Old Ezra 101, Old Heaven Hill BIB, and Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye. I also have 2 bottles of Elijah Craig 18 floating around in the cabinet. I also have enough Michter's Sour Mash from Pennsylvania to float a battleship, but that's all in the "collection" and off-limits for consumption (Unless a leak develops...).

Very nice Wall Eye. Definitely some favorites in your bunker. EWSB2000 is a steal for the quality. I bunkered about 5 of those myself. Great stuff.

I don't bunker much modern stuff except maybe a half-dozen bottles of Pappy 15 & 20. I pick up any WT stuff from the 90s when I find it. But I do pick up most of the 80s and 70s stuff I find because I know I may not find it again.

I decided to do a rough count of my favorites so here goes (all are pre-govt warning - 1980s or earlier unless otherwise noted):

AAA 10 80 proof x12
AAA 10 86 proof x7
Beam's Black 101 months x6
beam's Choice 8 year x9
Benchmark-Lou x20
EC12 x5
EW 1783 10 - year (1990s) x16
EW Black 7 year x6
EB Black x26
Fighting Cock 8 year x10
IWH 80 prf x3
IWH 86 prf x8
JW Dant x10
Jim Beam 7 year special reserve x8
kentucky tavern (1970s) x4
OC 7 year x8
OC 10 year x13
Old Forrester (various) x26
OGD 114 ND x10
OGD bonded ND x16
OGD 86 ND x29
Old Setter x13
Old Taylor 86 proof ND x24
Rebel Yell 90 proof x9
WTKS (1990s) x4
WTRB (1990s) x4
WTRR 101 (1990s) x2
WT Old No 8 (1990s) x5
WT 8 year (1990s) x2
WT 80 pf black label x5

This does not include a bunch of singles that were too hard to write down.

So I decided to count my Weller 12's last night. Thought I had 6 or 7. It's actually 12 (oops...). Have plenty of other stuff bunkered, but that is clearly tops for me (V17 wheater is probably next at 4 bottles).

I'm pretty sure the current leader in my bunker is Saz 18, something like 18 of 'em, with Four Roses Barrel Proof LE's following at around a case, then we get into a dead heat of WTRR101/VWFRR/Weller Cent/OCPR/ORVW10-107 Lburg/WT12/Handy/ER17/WLW/...so on and so forth around 5-6 of each of those...

It's kind of funny how you can get caught up buying, but never really keep track of what you're buying (even though you keep a spread sheet), until a thread like this appears. So you check the sheet, and say to yourself "are you f&#kin kidding me, I've bought that much????..I don't bunker to sell or trade, I bunker to be able to enjoy 20 yrs from now, God willing. So here goes:

-various VW's x 38...long story, I just bought 35 bottles from one man who bought them to flip, found out its more hassle then worth, and I paid below MSRP...perfect. .:slappin:

-FRLE's x 22...I loves me some FR's, 'nough said

-HH BIB 6yr white x 20...the age statement is going away, so thanks to our most recent BOTY, its my most favorite summer frig pour

-Ritt BIB DSP 354 x 15, its going to DSP 1 soon, I really dig the 354

-FRSB standard TPS x18...last years bottling really hit my sweet spot, and at $28.50, a no brainer

-Various AB's x 16...Truman (RIP) did some fantastic stuff

And so many 8-12 bottles bunkered of one bottling
Drink, share, enjoy

The most I have bunkered is ND OT 80 proof - a dozen 750s + some handles, which I picked up for $5 a piece. Most have torn or missing labels. For the price it is unbeatable.

I tend to bunker for breadth rather than depth, with a decent amount of bourbon, whisky, and rum. If I find a good price on something I stock up... I have a decent amount of Ritt BIB, FRSBLE, GTS, WTR101, Appleton 12, and Mount Gay Sugar Cane Brandy. Also a bunch of Compass Box Asyla I picked up cheap for cocktails.

Haha. Ok, that makes more sense. I've yet to meet someone that doesn't like the old PA stuff. As for how I got it all- let's just say Craigslist, public sales, and word of mouth have been great places to find it. And being only 10 minutes from Schaefferstown, there's still some lingering around out there and decanters are abundant.

This makes me wonder. Why is W12 harder to find in KY and, when you do, you are often limited to one bottle? It would seem just the opposite since it is made in KY. I would expect it to be harder to find elsewhere.

This makes me wonder. Why is W12 harder to find in KY and, when you do, you are often limited to one bottle? It would seem just the opposite since it is made in KY. I would expect it to be harder to find elsewhere.

Because bourbon sells very quickly here. W12 has flown off the shelves for the past 6 months or so. For the most part, it is true that ky gets a bigger share of bourbons than other states. The problem is that share is dwindling as bourbons popularity grows. More new markets with the same supply means less for someone in the food chain.

You can find lots of great bourbon here. But don't expect to find the limited releases in abundance.
