View Full Version : Bourbons that really SHINE with ice and water

Like most of you (from what I surmise at least), I like to drink my bourbons neat, or very carefully watered for a product like Stagg, etc. I have tried most of my stash with a handful of ice and water at least once with much higher dilution, and nearly all of them fell apart in the process. Except two of them. Two of my bourbons absolutely SHINED in ice water, maintaining their structure amazingly even at high dilution, and they are ETL and Jim Beam White Label. ETL was not a surprise as I saw a TV documentary showing that Elmer prefers his bourbon at 60 proof. The Jim Beam White was a bit of a surprise at first, but when you think about it, this is designed as a mixer bourbon, so maybe it is designed to stand up to the ice water.

What else really shines in dilute ice water?

On a really hot summer day (which rarely happens in Seattle, but were plenty of when I lived in Tallahassee) I enjoy OGD 114 with a cube... about the only bourbon I enjoy with ice.

Old Forester Signature does well over crushed ice. I keep a bottle in the refrigerator during the summer months just for this purpose.

It's not quite a bourbon, but I've been told Mellow Corn is quite tasty on the rocks on a hot summer day.

I would agree with OGD BIB,114 in addition add to the list EW BIB and HH BIB as well.I would also have to include Mellow Corn though not a bourbon,a great summertime pour on the rocks and one of my favorites during the warmer months.

The first PHC is really wonderful over crushed ice.

I think the flavor of Bourbon generally is strong enough to stand up to ice.

Not a bourbon as such but I like Ritt BiB on a cube as much as I like it without...which is quite a lot.

Squire ...

Spring has sprung and the "men of the block" congregation out front for our first "share a bottle" night of 2013 ... Most are Scotch drinkers, I am a Bourbon proponent. I had the opportunity to quote your post above as we were discussing the merits of whisky, ice and water ... while I didn't ask permission, I did give you (and SB) proper credit.

If you need more than an ice cube or touch of water, just to all out and fill up with ice and add coke too.

Practically ice, but I light the lightness of 4RSmB for Mint Juleps.

I take almost everything neat - but I drink Booker's (which I love) as a triple pour with two rocks. In warmer weather I take my non-premium bourbons with 2-3 whiskey stones that I keep in the freezer.

If I paid for the bottle I can drink it any way I like.

GTS would be one. I always drink it on the rocks and usually let it melt some as well.

I think most 100+ proof bourbons hold up well to be served on the rocks. My favorites include VOB 100 proof, WT 101, Weller 107

I have noticed print ads from the late 1950s emphasize their new 86 proof bottlings are "lighter and smoother" and usually display a glass with ice as well.

OGD 114 4cl two cubes, and Baker's, just 5-10 drops of still water, opens up the whole thing.

On a hot summer day, any bourbon with an ice cube will do, especially the BIB's and higher proof bottles. My favorites though (as others have mentioned) are VOB BIB, OF Signature, Old Fitz BIB and OGD114. You really can't go wrong with any of them.

Normally I start neat, then add just a drop of water, and finish with some ice. For some inexplicable reason, last night I had my VOB in reverse order. Had not planned it but what I discovered was that, after drinking it on ice, the VOB was even more pleasant than usual taken neat and had a fantastic mouthfeel. This may have been an anomaly. Must conduct more scientific experimentation today. Clearly more data is required.

Standard FRSB is terrific over ice, as are many of the merchant-selected single barrel FRs. I also like to keep a bottle of HH 6 YO BIB in the freezer. And often, when I get close to finishing a bottle of rye recipe bourbon, I'll pour the last bit into the HH bottle. It's a constant vatting in process. So far, so good.

I usually only drink bourbon on ice when I'm with my father-in-law. He often has a combination of WT101, KC, KCSB, Baker's or Booker's and they all take ice very well. It's the only way he drinks bourbon, so at least he has a selection that fits the bill.

I haven't been happy with any bourbon that I've added water/ice to, even KCSB at 120 proof.

Wow, I must be completely weird...I love a fair amount of my bourbon with a King Cube/Iceball....my faves are Buffalo Trace, Rittenhouse, and definitely Handy.

I prefer rye whiskey or high rye bourbon over ice, so the aforementioned 4R, RittBIB, OGD all work well. Obviously the higher the proof the better, but even 90 pf rye stands up to ice/dilution better than standard 12-18% rye bourbons. The spiciness keeps the flavors sharp, even when diluted.

Having a OGD BIB on the rocks with a splash of water right now. I think it is outstanding. It will happen again.

I'll echo some of the 4R suggestions specifically the yellow label. Especially if I'm out or at a party WT101 or EW black label on the rocks are solid too.

I have come to the conclusion that either neat, on the rocks, in an old fashioned, or in a manhatten, all of the BIB's old up pretty well.

This reminds me that HH White is pretty good on rocks.

I prefer Ten High (straight) as a 2-3oz pour on one ice cube. Taken neat, it's a bit harsh because it's young, even though it's only 80 proof. One ice cube seems to do an excellent job of smoothing out the sharp edges on this one.

Sadly, Ten High straight is no longer available in MI, unless you go dusty hunting.

I always buy a bottle of Rare Breed before the first VA Tech football game each season. I think pretty much all of WT lineup takes ice really well.

Personally I've never had one that "shined" on ice. I may like it well enough for a sip or two but always end up regretting the decision. Just not to my taste I reckon. Now, you will certainly find a bottle in my fridge.

Yes, I felt the same way until I started some experiments with everything I had, and Beam White and ETL came out as ahead of everything else when it comes to shining in water. And I don't just mean an ice cube or two, I'm talking heavy dilution with ice/water! Since I started the thread, let me add Beam Black to the list.

One that i did NOT like over ice was MM. I ordered one at a Thunder game and it just tasted like weak, bourbon-flavored water.

Most bourbons I've owned have been tried with ice or water at some stage, but it's usually the higher proof or burning finish bourbons that I prefer to add ice or water to. Old Charter 13yo or Fighting Cock come to mind as ones I prefer over ice or watered down.

Yeah, EW Black goes ok with some ice.

My drink of choice used to be EWB on the rocks. I still occasionally pour one. The BIB does hold up better to ice, but I'm less inclined to enjoy it that way since I can't get it here. I had a SB EC12 that was a vanilla bomb on the rocks. That was some good stuff!

EWB tastes much better over ice than neat for me. Also, I've just found out that Larceny is delicious over ice as I'm enjoying a pour right now.

Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. I drank my bourbon neat, then added a splash, and finished off with some ice.
What I find interesting about this thread is the number of SBers who confess to not only drinking but enjoying a wide variety of bourbons on ice. I would have guessed there would be more input from those who always, always, always take theirs neat the way God intended it.

I pretty much only drink whiskey over ice if it's mixed in a cocktail. Anything BIB or under pretty much always gets drunk neat, over that may or may not get a splash of water. I try every new to me whiskey neat, regardless of proof, but if it's over 114 pf I usually prefer it with a little water.

The key is to enjoy it. Whatever someone else does to enjoy theirs makes no difference to me. Whenever I serve whiskey to guests, I always have a small pitcher of ice water at hand, so they can have it their way.
