I'm thoroughly enjoying a Short's Freedom of '78. It's an IPA made with guava nectar and it is distributed only in Michigan. Very solid. The nose is excellent.

I have to pace myself tonight. I got a ticket to purchase 8 bottles of KBS at Founder's tomorrow. I will be sure to have at least one on tap and I'm hoping they still have Panther Cub available. Panther Cub has been on their taplist for a few days now. Tomorrow should be a fun day.

I got a mixed 12 pack assortment from Fat Tire. It came with Mighty Arrow Pale Ale. At 6% and plenty of hops, I would call it more like an IPA. The hop character is more flowers and perfume rather than bitter. It also has a nice thick mouth-feel. That I wouldn't have guessed, for the color is about the same as an average lager. Good stuff.

Had a few AtG offerings last night. Couple of Citra Ass Downs, Bloody Show, and Saladbarity. All really solid but damned if that Bloody Show isn't just fantastic. Pilsner brewed w blood oranges? Who knew that was my missing pilsner ingredient? Could drink that one all the time.

Just finished scalping the Bermuda grass in the front yard, and Zoysia in the back. Anyone who has done this knows how sucky a job it is, and how good an ice cold beer tastes afterwards. This SweetWater Whiplash White IPA is just about perfect, but I can't really be sure, as it took about 7.2 seconds to guzzle it. Now to get all this grass, dirt and pollen crap out of my nose...

Popped a GI BCBBW with brunch. It does not pair well with eggs, bacon and toast, but it got better as it warmed, bringing out ginormous caramel-y barrel notes as the alcohol subsided. Then I had some HA Shewolf, which was quite a bit better when fresh. Then I saw that my local beer bar tapped a Parabola, so I conveniently 'filled up the tank' on a drive over and put one back in 15 minutes. Wish I had 3 times more time than that, but I work with what I have. Parabola is the noblest BBA IS of them all, with a subdued nose, a subtle palate and a finish that digs really, really deep.

Parabola is Richard III and BCBS is King Lear.

Stone Enjoy By 4/20: the first bottled Enjoy By release available in Maryland. Really outstanding beer. Nose is all bright, citrusy hops. Taste is all bitter hops and biscuits. It's very biscuity, but without the overwhelming malt sweetness you sometimes get. As it warms in the glass, I start to get some menthylated notes. The hops are really well integrated into this. I highly recommend to those who enjoy hops.

Enjoying a bottle of Nicsicko, a Montenegrin lager. Tastes similar to an American lager like Coors. I drank a lot of these while traveling in the Balkans a couple years ago, so when I saw it at BevMo, I had to pick it up. It's hitting the spot, but it's no Cantillon.

Cantillon isn't on a traditional delivery schedule. They might get 3 or 4 cases every other month. So tracking its availability is impossible.

And I have had this bottle for a while. Bought it out of state.

It was fantastic, hops present on nose only.

You want a hopped gueze, try betelgeuze by mikkeller. That one is hoppy on nose, citric acid on palate.

Been enjoying some Bell's Oberon that released for this year on Monday. Got a case Monday at Costco and then called around local bars until I found someone who had it on tap on Monday and went there and had some. The rest of this week the other bars are starting to get it and I am continuing to enjoy it and hoping it makes the snow go away.

Best regards, Tony

Pretty sure I don't want a hopped gueze! Only time I get Cantillon is when I go to Brussels and drag it back home from the brewery. They didn't have any St. Gilloise when I was there last. I think I have one bottle of Cantillon left from my last trip in 2012.

I have never seen it on a shelf in Georgia (or anywhere else for that matter) so it has been carefully rationed!

They have been serving $5 IPAs during the basketball tournament and they have had their own IPA tournament similar to the basketball tournament. They had 32 IPAs to start with but it has been narrowed down to two favorites - Dark Horse Crooked Tree and Perrin's IPA. I will be shocked if DH Crooked Tree doesn't win.

Ok, here goes the Dark Horse.

I had some Plead The 5th Imperial Stout last night.
Loaded with coffee (not as strong as Founder's Breakfast Stout) and chocolate.
A very pleasant sweetness that is perfect for after dinner.
ABV 11% but you'd have never guessed it was that high.

Having some Double Crooked Tree IPA while preparing the grill and the ribs for this afternoon.
This comes in at 12% ABV and again you'd never know.
All ingrediants were doubled except the water.
Light grapefruit and other citrus on the nose.
Mild lemon/orange peel taste, another winner.

Yes, the Hopcat I went to last night is in East Lansing. It is the second one established. The first one is in downtown Grand Rapids next to Van Andel Arena. They are putting up a third Hopcat in Detroit now. I think it will be ready in August? Each place is definitely work looking for if you are ever in those areas. Check out their websites - their taplists are outstanding.

And Dark Horse is kicking ass and taking names, aren't they? Everything they make is killer. I really want to try their barrel aged Plead the Fifth. I think you can try it if you go to their brewery and pay a little extra to be seated in some kind of VIP area.

Thought I'd have a chance to try a Double Crooked Tree last night (store only had a single bottle that I bought), but had a few friends over last night and someone helped themselves to it before I noticed what they had grabbed. Had to resort to a Chillwave instead. Something tells me this is going to be a staple beer in my house come summer.

Crap. I guess it's a good thing you are sharing this information with me now! :)

Had some cask-conditioned Hopslam today, fresh from the firkin. Gorgeous stuff; hops so much more expressive than in the bottles or regular tap. Softly sweet and floral on the palate with just a hint of bitterness on the finish. I like the regular stuff too, with its hard-hitting palate and drying finish; cask-conditioned it's just a completely different beer, though still undoubtably familiar. Special stuff.

11 people from work did a beer swap today. The idea is that everyone in the group brings in 12 beers and you get 1 from everyone in the group, including one of your own. It's a cool way to try a variety of beers without having to purchase a six pack on your own.

Anyway, started with one of the beers from the swap, Southern Tier Hop Sun. Not really digging this one off the bat. Tastes like a more refined BudLight Lime. Might have to spend a little more time with this one.

Looking forward to trying this Bell's Black Note Stout, which is aged in bourbon barrels. I don't really keep up with all of the special release beers, but I happened to be in the store and there was a line for these. I got some Founders Imperial Stout, love it.
Pours thick, great head, coffee, chocolate and a bit hoppy.
Sweet aroma.
At 10.5% ABV and 90 IBUs it has all the flavors and very creamy too.
Half way though I bit off a peice of some 70% cocoa chocolate to go with it and yes it worked.
I think I'll cellar one of these for a few years.
Right now in the cellar I have 2 2012 Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stouts and 1 2013.
Also a 2013 Arcadia Barrel Aged Shipwreck Porter.

So......if I bring down the 4 pack I have to the Sampler, just to try and give it away....you're not the guy to ask, eh?

Wife and I went out for dinner tonight and I had an Ethos IPA. Not bad, but a little bland for an IPA

LOL not your guy. Hey, sure someone will love it. People tend to like the Bourbon Barrel Ale and I can't stand it either. Bring it!

Had my first DFH 120 last night and didn't really think it was too good. The booziness was unexpected (despite its high ABV) and kind of ruined it for me. I did, however, find 3 Dreadnaughts today so I will be enjoying one of those and a recently-acquired Justin Blabaer tonight.

DFH 120 is one beer that I suggest drinking close to room-temp. I know that sounds weird, but I pour it straight out of the fridge into a glass and let it warm up. The booziness subsides and the flavors really start to pop. Kind of like a port or rich red wine (in that you are supposed to drink them room temp.)

The DFH 90 is my favorite in the lineup and honestly never even reach for the 120.

The 90 is the one I drink most of out of that line as well. The 120 is a once or twice a year after dinner dessert split between 2 or 3 people. I used to like the 60 as an everyday IPA, but it's too bland for me now. My daily driver IPA is Racer 5. We don't get all of those cool 3F and ZombieDust releases here.

Dfh 120 is wretched IMO. Extreme for the sake of being extreme. A mess of hop extract, syrup and cheap booze.

I have tried it numerous times at varying temps too.

We rarely get any but our customers go nuts over it.

A couple of Ryeclops Imperial Rye Ale by Arbor Brewing of Ypsilanti, Michigan.
Very good but it makes me want to search out one that I think is better.
And that would be Red's Rye PA by Founders of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Over a year ago a retailer told my that Founders Red Rye PA was being discontinued.
I didn't understand this at all.
As it turns out it was on hiatis and re-positioned, instead of 6-paks it comes in 4-paks at a higher cost per bottle.

Yes, you are correct Sir.
I looked up their availability calendar and see that it should be out now, January thru April.
I also see that they did the same with the Breakfast Stout, available September thru December.
Link below for the calender.

As a beer newbie, I'm not sure what to be drinking as the weather gets warmer. I know I like (D)IPAs but the one little bit of info I know about them is that they're best fresh. I don't know if that rules out Chillwave (still found fairly easily) or not. Any recommendations?

MyOldKyDram

Go for the Chillwave. Still a good month or so left on those "freshness" wise. Plus there wont be any more until next year. And I think there should be a laser code date on that Dreadnaught somewhere.

Agreed. Dreadnaught is a great IIPA. I'm into the hops tonight as well with some Revolution Anti-Hero and Stone Go To IPA.

A happy Good Friday to all.
Today is a very good Friday because we get the day off.
And I am sipping The Illinois, an Imperial India Pale Ale by Goose Island.
Juicy-Lucy grape-fruity hoppy goody-ness, at 9% ABV and 95 IBU's, what's not to like?

Mirror Mirror Barleywine. So good. The wine influence really cuts through all the caramel richness, and just the right amount of hops bite, bitterness on the finish. Really nice.

Enjoying an Oskar Blues 10.50. I have been looking for this one for a few years and my insurance agent mailed me a 4 pack that arrived today. Guess I will be keeping him for a while.

Last night I had a Cantillon Fou foune. One of the best sours I have ever tasted. Apricots complement the tart to perfection.

Then I opened a bottle of founders bolt cutter. Not as sweet after 18 months but still a boozy mess. Those Canadian maple bourbon barrels don't make everything better.

2013 Revolution Very Mad Cow Milk Stout. Creamy, and loaded with milk chocolate and bourbon notes. Love.

My wife and I went to Easter dinner at my brother and sister in laws today. They invited their neighbors from Thailand over to share in the feast. Their neighbors brought some beer from Thailand over to share. After dinner the men folk relaxed with a bottle of Chang Beer. Not something I would drink on a regular basis, but not too bad at all.
