View Full Version : Stagg vs. Stagg
Well folks, really I have no intention of sending myself into a drunken stupor. I have a touch , and I mean a small touch of Last years 136.7 and This years 142.7 at the moment, in the small tasting glasses Larry Kass let us keep yesterday. Findings, Conclusions? I don't have any. I'll get back later. After a smell and taste of each, I found myself tasting the new and chasing it with the old, tasting the old chased by the new. I am doing a disservice , I know, to scientific method. Scientific Method be Damned, I'm enjoying it. Not ready to proclaim a winner( Unless I consider myself http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif)
Not ready to join Marvins camp. It's different, actually percentage wise the extra 6 points of proof doesn't seem like a lot , but I think each of those 6 points are calling attention to themselves. I was considering sending this back and forgoing the cost of admission. That to me at this point would have been a big mistake. This just needs more time and work on my part. I know it's a dirty job but.............

I'm with you Bobby. I am enjoying both of the Stagg releases right now. Still not certain of a favorite, but both are extremely fine bourbons IMHO. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/toast.gif

Damn, Bobby!

If I counted correctly, that about $1700 worth of Stagg!! Not bad considering you could probably sell it for about $2500 in a couple months. I have 5 bottles and I thought that was quite a few. Humm........was I wrong.

Bobby, I notice that some of your bottles have a gold sticker on them. Is this a "hand picked for" sticker. If you tire of all that Stagg, I'll gladly take a couple bottles off your hands. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
The gold sticker is "Whiskey of the Year, 2002" on last years bottles. Not all of last years had that and a few in front are this years.

Between the Members of this board who laid it in, we collectively have enough to fill a barrel back up. Sometimes I wonder what 5 more years at warehouse H would produce, I realise it's about perfect as is no point in that but it is amazing to think about the volume.

I haven't tried my Stagg '03 yet (I bought two bottles). I find the proof a little intimidating, and my experience with the ultra-high proofs (e.g., Booker's) has been that I don't really care for it. It's a case where I can't wait to try it, but am hesitant to be disappointed. So, I keep whiling away with others I know I like (and there are several!).

Don't be fooled by the "drink it at full proof" crowd. You're not any
less of a man if you add water. As a matter of fact (I have said it in the
past and will say it again): if you're only drinking it at full proof, then
you're missing out on a lot of the greatness of these bourbons. You're
supposed to add water to anything bottled at such a high-proof.
(I'd love to see the members of the "drink it at full proof" crowd do
a side-by-side tasting consisting of undiluted Stagg vs. a similar but
lower proof bourbon that has been "boosted" in proof by adding ethanol
(e.g. Everclear).)
Tim Dellinger
I think that the flavor profiles of bourbon are far too subjective to be claiming anyone is missing out on anything, no matter how they take their drink. I happen to prefer most of my bourbons at full strength, regardless of proof. That said, there are some that I find are enhanced with a bit of water. For instance, I enjoy Stagg '02 best neat, while '03 needs about 25% water added, IMHO. It all comes down to how you like your whisk(e)y, and no one sould try and convince you otherwise.
I agree with you as well Jeff. I personally enjoy my Stagg (the 02' have not opened an 03' as of yet) straight while Elijah Craig 12 year I find really benefits from a quick splash. To each is own when it comes to straight or diluted a little/lot.

I'm so new to drinking bourbon, that I do both when I'm trying something new, which is almost everytime I open a different bottle.
I have openned and tasted Stagg '03..... I will never be the same again this is sooo smmmoooothhh and the taste I will never find words inmy life time to do justice to the finest of the Distiller's Art.... I just hope that my daily pour will stand this small sip of the Nector of the Gods

How does it compare to the 2002, in your view, Bill?
Very tough call I finailly broke down and openned one of 02' for the first time last night I will never be the same again .... http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Good idea -- water opens up some flavors and if you are into getting all experiences then by all means sampling neat, with a splash, on ice, all make a nice range, IMHO.
I stopped off at my bottle shop today to again thank the owner/ manager for his efforts in getting me G.T. Stagg ... It just so happened that the area Distributor/Sales Rep was there also . I got to thank him also for his efforts and have secured that next years G.T. Stagg and the up coming B.Trace release bottlings will be coming my way A.S.A.P. ...
The only thing I feel bad about http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif is that other than buying Bourbon there is nothing that I have to offer or can do for these gentlemen that they will take to express my thanks for their efforts. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/banghead.gif... I do see that having gotten in ORVW products and Other BT products that a small but growing sales base has started here the the SE of MA at the 2 shops... http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Actually you did do a hell of a lot for them, They have product in an area they didn't previously. It will catch on and they will profit. I had this quandry last year in my searching for Stagg and OFBB. I ordered some thru a liquor store and they doubled the order and sold out. They didn't have any idea about either bourbons and they made money in the end. 5 % off to me would have been nice.

Bobby, I agree. A small token of their thanks would not have hurt them and would have solidified your relationship as their ambassador. I noticed that you did not name the shop, but I'm surmizing that had you received some thanks, that you might have named the store?
http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/toast.gif
Just being able to promise and then get G.T. Stagg in this state (MA.) is nothing short of a gift of the gods....Then to promise NEXT years Stagg on top of that ....You can understand that it puts me in a very beholding position http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif....
Bill G.
There's no point to name this outfit. They have a good shop but I will only go there as a last resort now. The whole point was I rattled their chain on both OFBB and Stagg and at first they knew nothing of either, then got up with their suppliers. Besides taking care of my order( Thanks) they got more and promptly sold all of that as well. I realise when you sell a truck load a week that a few cases isn't much.

Did anybody notice that BT has done some minor updating to their 'boutique' website? They finally put Stagg in the Antique Collection and removed Weller 19:

OK, so which company is it that markets the labels on that "greatbourbon" web page?
I've never seen any of those in my local bottle shops.

"Who markets...?", you ask? I'm not sure. (In fact the whole marketing activity for those products appears muddled, to put it politely.)
The producer is Buffalo Trace Distillery.
I can't imagine why that name is omitted from the website.
I do know that there are separate websites for at least Buffalo Trace Bourbon (http://www.buffalotrace.com/), Blanton's Single Barrel bourbon (http://www.blantonsbourbon.com/), and the Old Rip Van Winkle (http://www.oldripvanwinkle.com/newbs/vw/website3.nsf/pagesbyname/home?opendocument) family of bourbons and rye.
Again, except for the first of the three, I see no reference to "Buffalo Trace Distillery" on those sites. In fact, the ORVW site refers to "Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery", which, as far as I know, does not exist -- at least not as a separate physical entity.
Here in southern California I have seen on the shelves all of those bottlings, with the exception of Buffalo Trace itself, the higher-end Ancient Age bottlings, the higher-end Old Charter, and this year's Antique Collection. The BT website has a "Where to get it?" function that lists locations in KY, TN and IN only. And yet I can order it from Sam's or Binny's in Chicago.
I'm guessing that the distribution of all of the BT bottlings reflects past associations of the various labels more than any rational, comprehensive marketing plan. Perhaps an industry insider can shed additional light on all of this.
Yours truly,
Dave Morefield (The Original DaveM)

Thanks Dave.
Those products seem to have a great rep among the bourbonophiles here, and I'm anxious to try some of them, but Ancient Age is the only label that I remember seeing on the shelves.
The property development company I work for rents to several WSLCB stores, so I should talk to a couple managers and find out what it takes to get those products here.
How much do you folks pay for your GT Stagg, in your respective locations? What do you pay for Buffalo Trace?

Buffalo Trace is not readily available here in NY, but there are a few stores in Manhattan that have it. I can get it for about $20-22+tax out here... George T. Stagg I was able to get for $46 plus tax this time around. The last time (2002) I got it for $42-43 with the tax...

Stagg is officially unavailable in Virginia. The ABC Special Order Catalog lists it at $43.65, but I got a call today from my local store manager and she said "the distributor that offered it to the State of Virginia has reneged."
Alas, I will remain a Stagg virgin. *SIGH*
I buy my Buffalo Trace in Maryland, where it's $12.99/750ml.

BT is not available in Missouri either, but luckily I can drive about 25 minutes to Illinois side of St Louis Metro area and pick up a bottle at Randall's (www.internetwines.com) also listed in the Van Winkle where to get listing. But I have found them to be much higher than Binny's or Sam's. Just more convenient for me. One other thing about this store, the pricings on the internet and those on the shelves can be much different. I picked up Pappy Van Winkle 20yr for about 80 bucks and they price it at just over 100 on the net. In other cases I have found the price to be lower on the shelves. I have heard that if the web price is lower they will honor it. So, if any of you are going to shop there, take a printout of their website pricing with you.

I bought the new Stagg for $41.99 (plus sales tax, which is 9.25% here) last month here in Tennessee, but only about 1 in 4 stores has received an allocation, and most of it has likely disappeared by now. Buffalo Trace is, however, widely available for anywhere from $22-$26, depending on size/location/clientele of store.
