I collect, sell and trade advertizing memorbilia of all sorts. This weekend at an estate sale I purchsed a small cast iron Buffalo which has cast in relief on the base:BUFFALO SPRINGS DISTILLING CO./STAMPING GROUND KENTUCKY.I did some searching on the net as too when this distillery existed and came up with nothing.Does anyone know anything about this distillery? The piece has worn gold paint, similar to "dipped" cast iron still banks from the turn of the century.I believe this to be that old,but would appreciate any info you might share...Ill take a couple pics this week if you'd like a look at it.
Stamping Ground is a small town in Scott County, Kentucky. It was named that by early settlers because of the herds of buffalo that trampled the grass around the town's fruitful spring. Because of that spring, a distillery was located on the site at least as early as 1860. The Buffalo Springs Distillery was constructed there early in the 20th century. The plant produced several bourbon brands including Boots and Saddle, and Buffalo Springs. It was eventually purchased by Seagram's and ceased production in the 1960s. The property was sold at auction in 1996. The building was still standing at that time but has likely been demolished, to clear the land for development and because weathered limestone blocks are a valuable building material.

Close Chuck but it was Schenley, not Seagram's that owned Buffalo Springs at Stamping Grounds. They also had such brands as Boots and Saddles and Stamping Grounds bourbons.

I know this is an old topic, but here's an update about Buffalo Springs. This is a link to the Bluegrass Trust, http://www.bluegrasstrust.org/endangered/index.htm
Just read around and it explains what they are all about. Go to the bottom and click on the 2002 list link and it gives a short description of it. Looks like it's probably still there.
Ohh yes, I forgot an important part of my post. Also click on the Endangered Updates on that same page. It talks about someone buying the Distillery.
Here's a picture from todays State Journal(Franfort). Its from a special section about the 1974 toranado the went through Frankfort and the surrounding area. It's really poor quality, but it shows Stamping Ground and in the upper right corner, you can see what I think is Buffalo Springs distillery. You can't really tell but, all of those houses are basically torn apart and the distillery buildings look pretty much untouched.
