I am going to take this time to step up on the soap box and talk about preservation of your cherished photographs and other bourbon documents. The one thing I want to pass on as an archivist is DO NOT PUT PAPER OR PHOTOGRAPHS IN ONE OF THOSE "MAGNETIC" ALBUMS!!! I am sure you are familiar with the type I am talking about with the sticky paper and a clear plastic cover. These things will destroy your documents and photographs. The chemical in the sticky substance bleeds through your paper and makes them brittle, washes out ink in paper and cause complete breakdown of material. I have seen this happen in as little as 6 months so if you want to keep your label collection or photographs in a condition that your grandchildren can appreciate, then put them in a mylar sleeve of some type.

Thanks for the advice Mike.

I just bought some old labels on ebay and was thinking about putting them in a frame to hang on the wall. Do you have any suggestions on the best way to do this? I wouldn't want to get the wrong king of matting and have it ruin the labels.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!!!
Jim

Jim,
If you want to have labels that you can pass on to your grandchildren, do not put them in a frame. What I tell people is to take the originals to Kinkos or some other color photcopying place and make good color copies and frame those. Take the originals and buy an album with the mylar plastiv pages and store the labels in the album. This will keep the sunlight from destroying the paper and fading the ink. A framed label will start to fade in a few years andthe paper will become brittle in a few more. If you are going to frame them make sure the matting is an acid free material and you hang it where light does not always illuminate the frame. Sunlight is worse but other light can also do damage.
