I got in a little time searching today, didn't find what I was looking for , but I found something. Cabin Still 90 proof from the Louisville days. New enough to have a UPC code and Old enough to have a fake tax stamp. No other markings to distinguish a date. A bottle of this might make the gazebo table. It's not mid 60s for sure and I have had some of that that was excellent, but it may be a good drink nonetheless. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/yum.gif

Sorry no pics, it's all the same as the others barring a red ribbon stating 90 proof across the upper right corner of the label, printed on it.

Bobbyc,
Sounds almost like 1.75 liter of Louisville Cabin Still I found awhile back, except mine was 80 proof. My label says "distilled and bottled for cabin still distillery" and has a fake tax stamp. I was told by a well informed expert that because of the label, it is most likely not SW bourbon, but purchased by UD from another distiller. Despite not being SW it is still an enjoyable bourbon and a regular pour for me. Perhaps yours is different, as it is 90 proof and not 80.

it is most likely not SW bourbon,

Cliff, Barrel_Proof dropped by for a visit and he and I gave this Cabin Still 90 proof an evaluation, this evening. We did an A-B comparison to a Weller mini courtesy of Tim Sousley. We do indeed think it is a wheated bourbon and a fine one at that. It is youngish, the whitedog corn sweetness is evident. I can't say much beyond that except I am pleased very much by finding a couple bottles of it. I offered and Cliff graciously accepted, 1 bottle to add to his bunker, obviously the other is open and being enjoyed. This time I subscribe to the Drink It Man, Drink It! credo. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/toast.gif

We didn't have any of those bacon wrapped steak things but we did have a bit of steak with a secret marinade that was very tasty. Wish some of you could have been here, especially Tim, since your mini was a great help to sample the Cabin Still by. http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/bowdown.gif

Thank you for your kind sentiment, and also for the tasting report from that mini. We will reassemble soon, I trust -- I have a pair of '30s-era, 23-month-old Glenmore 90 proof, 86-proof Old Hickory, 86-proof Ancient Age, and 86-proof Old Fitz Prime, all in 1/10th-oz. sizes, to compare with that old Crab Orchard.

Tim,

Old Hickory was one of my first bourbons, probably my first "everyday pour". This was back around 1968 to 1970. Was yours made in Pennsylvania? That is what I remember.

Thanks,
Tim

Yep, "Distilled in Penna.", bottled in "Phila., Pa., Lemont, Ill."

I have a little more time to extol the virtues of this 90 proof Cabin Still Bottling. It is a very interesting bourbon, the youngness comes thru but it does have a degree of refinement, this bottling could easily be consumed in a sitting or 2 and one can imagine a bottle of this would be welcomed at a fishing or hunting camp, it was after all said to be favored by sportsmen by Sally VanWinkle Campbell in her book.

In the picture the red slash on the label states 90 proof,Now I wonder how rare a bottling this was. Cliff had never seen it. It most likely is at present the finest 8 dollar and 25 cent bourbon in the world! http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif

If you encounter this one, my recomendation would be to buy it. What do you think Cliff?

Bobby, thanks for the generous contribution to the bunker.

I was first struck by the nose on this 90 proof Louisville Cabin Still bottling -- quite spicy for what would upon reflection prove to be a wheater.

You are right to highlight the desirable white dog elements of this otherwise refined bourbon. This gives away its youth, but also confirms that it started out as good dog, indeed. (Last summer a few of us sampled WT and Beam dog on back to back days -- both extremely fine, but clearly distinguishable from one another.)

Tasting the 90 alongside the Weller confirmed it to be a wheater and most likely of common heritage. It would be a great ball game flask bourbon. What you say, Jim, Tim?

Thanks again. We'll have to sample more rarities while savoring the work of the secret marinade another time real soon!

I say -- I wonder if I can find enough flasks! http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/yum.gif http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
