is WT RR 101 rareor a tough find?

Not in my parts, orange county, california, it's still pretty readily available. Ok, maybe I shouldn'y say that, but I'd say if you want it, it can defenitely be found. Saw a few tonite at a corner liquor store while hunting for rarities. I have some put "away" and whenever I can get it cheap, like 23ish, I pick up one or two...

I guess I'd say it is not everywhere, more rare than it was 6 months ago, but still can be found by checking 3 or 4 places. I think eventually it'll only be found at the more expensive places (~30) which I am not sure I'd pay for it honestly. I tried WT8year last night and found that better than RR 101, but that's just my opinion and I also love regular WT101 so much that I've always been hestiant to pay more for any WT premiums which may or may not be that much better. But that is just me and I am pretty sure I am in the minority with that opinion and will always consider anything from WT...

It is growing rare at a mildly slow pace as far as I can tell......but, all I have to go by is in my local area. Back in November, I could have put my hands on approximately 20-25 of them that I know of around here in SW Tennessee. I found that many after scouting out probably 25-30 stores in a 30-mile radius. At present, I know there are about a dozen of those still available. I have taken possession of 7 of them with 6 still in the bunker. So, of the original number found, I only missed buying 1 or 2 of them. It looks like nobody but me is buying them around here - at least right now.

MY 2 CENTS WORTH: I make a living in sales. Once all the RR101 is about gone, the demand will suddenly go way up....it always works that way in just about any product that gets in short supply - at least in my personal experience. Just make sure that you, like me, have already planned ahead and secured a satisfactory number. You might ask: How many is 'satisfactory'? I don't know for sure but I do know that I rarely ever reach that point!

I think that sums it up for now.

The price point (or whatever you call that (quality for price)) on it I just don't think warrants running out and clearing the shelves - maybe the reason why it hasn't happened? Honestly, I have not paid more than 21.99 for a bottle, YET, and do not plan to ever go over 24 when I can get WT101 for 13, it IS NOT THAT MUCH BETTER, bottom line. I'd pay 25 for a lot of bourbons before I'd pay it for RR101. Sorry just my thoughts. I'll open another bottle soon to re-confirm these thoughts. IF you can find 8 year, buy that over RR101.

Not yet noted here -- though certainly stated in other threads -- is that WT RR 101 has been discontinued. There won't ever be any more. It now has a lower proof (90) and a different bottle.
So, what you can find today is all there is.

I pretty much stopped noticing a couple of months ago when I: a) decided I had enough stockpiled; and b) saw that the couple of stores that seemed to have a good lingering stock had replaced it with 90. So, yeah, rare here, and get it while you can.

All that said I just picked up another one for the bunker today, like I said I'll keep buying it at 22 until it's gone and years down the road if someone needs one or two I'd gladly oblige... I am not in this to horde it, just have it to share with others sometime later... :toast:

Sorry just my thoughts.

Christian,

The only way an opinion suggests the need for an apology around here is when you don't have one.

That reminds me, I'd forgotten that I polished off this month's BOTM a couple of months ago. I guess I need to make the likely futile trip to Prescott in search of another bottle. If that fails, then I guess I can make the rounds of Whiskey Row (http://www.whiskeyrow.us/), pen and notebook in hand.

Yours truly,
Dave Morefield

It has been all gone here for quite some time. And the 90-proof did not come in to take its place, either.

I saw two more bourbons listed as "closeouts", today. One was J. W. Dant BIB and I bought a bottle for $12.99. I don't even remember what the other one was, but I didn't want it. If the J. W. Dant is any good, I may go back and buy a few bottles.

Alabama seems to be getting rid of all bourbons. There's still plenty of high-priced scotch, though, so I guess that's what people want.

I hadn't seen any in the Boston area all spring (not that there was much there in the first place, but I did see the new 90 proof bottles at a few places). When I moved down to DC at the beginnning of the summer, I hit up several of my favorite spots and still didn't see anything. Today, I went by Washington Wine & Liquors and found 3 remaining bottles, along with a shelf full of the 90 proof. Bought all 3.

I have a few of these and have come across quite a few more if anyone is in need of more. I think this is the ONLY WT product I do not care for...

I liked the RR101 quite a bit, but prefer the WT12 and probably wouldn't have bothered with picking up more RR101 after I'd found several WT12 bottles. But now that it's semi-rare...

Most of the shops in NJ that carried it in the past no longer have it in stock. That being said I was able to pick up another bottle last weekend from a shop I normally do not go to.

There is a place in NYC that has a bunch but it is too expensive so there they will remain unless I have an emergency!

WTRR 101 was one of the few decent, and decently priced bourbons(~$25/btl) available in upstate NYS, alas... no more. Unfortunately for us in Upstate NYS the switch over from 101, to 90 proof hapened to coincide with a distributor switch (Universal/charmer to Southern W&S), so all the WTRR 101 dissapeared to other markets before Southern tried to get any stock :smiley_acbt: .

The WTRR 101 has been discontinued, replaced by the WTRR 90, so if it's not rare now it is rapidly becoming so although, we know how this goes, they'll probably keep turning up for the next 20 years.

Though this opinion is counter to the majority here, I prefer the 90. It's clearly a different profile, i.e., more than just a lower proof, and I like the packaging better too. I consider it an improvement.

The WT RR 101 has disappeared from my favorite store, but is still around. It is more expensive here than in the States, so I have only had two bottles. I think I still have some of the second bottle. I like it a lot, but like WT 101 8 year old just as much and that is cheap and easy to get here. Well, some nights the RR tastes a bit better and other nights the 8 year old wins by a nose. The WT RR, both the 101 and the 90, cost about 75% more than the 8 year old. I haven't had the RR90 yet, but the RR101 just isn't 75% better than the 8 year old.

To sum up, I haven't stocked up and don't plan to. I will try the RR 90 eventually, but am in no hurry to do so. I agree with Chuck, I like the new packaging better.

Ed,

You are lucky that the 8 year old there is still an 8 year old. They took the age statement off the standard WT 101 here about ten years ago. I suspect what we're getting is closer to six years old. Don't get me wrong, it's still fine whiskey.

For those who are interested, and in the DC area, A-1 Liquors on K St, near 14th St, has several (5-8?) bottles of WTRR101 remaining at $30/per.

I was also recently be able to pick up 3 bottles at a slightly cheaper price. If anyone who't not able to visit DC or find WTRR101 in their own area would like me to send them the bottles in exchange for another tasty bourbon, I'd be happy to oblige. And if the three I have run out, I can always go pick up the remaining bottles at A-1.

Don't I know it! Actually, I look forward to getting a bottle of the WT 101 no age statement on my next trip home, just to see what it is like. I am sure it is very good.

Spent two hours on the phone this morning calling around, spent 3 more driving around, to no avail. Then on complete whim I go to the store across the street from my apartment, and find 3 bottles of WTRR 101 sitting on the shelves.

I'm normally amazed if this store even has Grey Goose or Jim Beam, but there they were. Solved my WTRR problem for a good while. Not my favorite in the price range, but a definite mood whiskey.
