How many open bottles is to many?

Right now I have about 18 to 20 open bottles

I got a more that I am waiting to try but want to finish a couple of these first. I guess what I want to know is how many open bottles is too many? Consuming an average of 6 to 8 oz a day, how many open bottles do you have?

Until I start to kill a few of these, no others will be opened. Although this is a lot of bottles, I am in Los Angeles doing a play and since we started rehearsing six weeks ago, almost every person in the cast has been over at least once to sample some good American whiskey.

Since I'm working nights, I don't get to drink as much as I otherwise would. But next week, I have matinees which leaves my evenings free. I'm hoping to put together a tasting night with some like minded SBers.

The only one of the above that I really don't care for is the Yellowstone. I don't even particularly care to mix with it. It's an older bottle so maybe it's gone off, but there was no evaporation and the seal seemed good. I think it's just a flavor that doesn't appeal to me.

I used to have around 40 open bottles but in recent times I have made a sincere attempt to discipline myself.

The trouble for me is that I seldom order stuff för bunkering, i.e. a bottle bought is because I´m yearning for it, which makes it difficult to resist cracking it open.

As I mentioned before, I haven´t really encountered any problem regarding diminishing quality but I have so many bottles that I sometimes have found myself forgetting the existence of some of the bottles.

I'm a sincere believer in keeping your options wide open and that if you have more bottles closed than open you're wastin good drinking time. As Tim said in another thread most of mine are open. If I can't taste em from time to time how can I remember if I like em or not? What do you mean keep tasting notes?

To many to list, but I counted 46......I thought it would be more, the shelf sure looks like it's more!

I try to keep my open bottles limited to less than 6(though currently I have over a dozen open-and I blame it all on the guys in the chatroom:lol: .) I did have a period of time when I had about 3 dozen open bottles and found that a few of them had experienced a flavor shift, most notably a WT12:cry: .

I have to add that this newly acquired discipline of mine took a serious knock, wednesday last week. All this due to my somewhat fatalistic nature.

I was about to fly to Stockholm the next morning and suddenly it struck me : "What if the plane crashes and I don´t get to taste some of my unopened bottles?". Accordingly, I opened my most recent Bourbon purchases, Elmer T. Lee and Rock Hill Farms.

Well, it was my first Elmer for many years so maybe the judge would let me off the hook with something like 'extenuating circumstances'?

All of my bottles are open, which easily numbers 100. As soon as I get them, I open and taste at my convenience. If I don't really know what to drink, I have all bottle names written on a small pieces of paper and just draw a name. As long as I get to enjoy a drink when I want that is all that matters!

Umm, mostly I don't...
Being married to a (former) travel agent (she's still in the industry, just not retail) means we travel an average of 2-3 times a year overseas.
Many of these have been picked up on my travels.

Will do

Not sure if this was stated or not (its been a while since I started this thread)....so this may be a recap -

Heaven Hill products available from most Liquorland or Vintage Cellars stores in Brisbane -
Elijah Craig 12yo
Evan Williams 7yo
95 Evan Williams SB
Virgin Bourbon

BWS carry Jim Beam Bonded 1ltr bottles that used to only be available duty free. They also carry Nelson County 40% which is another Heaven Hill product (and awesome value in my opinion)

Have a look at www.nicks.com.au (http://www.nicks.com.au) - they are a Melbourne based store carying:
Buffalo Trace
Blantons Original, Silver, Gold and Family Reserve
Virginia Gentleman
Hirsch 16yo

Most of the other stuff can be found locally at most stores.

I think every single bottle is open unless it is a back up of something that is open. There might be one or two that haven't been cracked yet, but I am not saving them, just neglecting them. I think there must be around a hundred of them. I will go check. I need to pour my first drink anyway.

114 open bottles. That count could be off by 3 or 4 either up or down. I did find a few unopened bottles. I opened one, a bottle of Bulliet I got on vacation last year. I will get them all open here soon. There are Bourbons, Ryes, Japanese whiskies and Brandies, Scotch, Irish, a couple of bottles each of Gin, Vodka, and Tequila.

It's interesting isn't it?

Until just recently, I had been a huge fan of Eagle Rare 17. I was having a conversation with Doug Phillips about it a while back, and he was telling me that he didn't understand my affinity for the bottling.

I then realized that I hadn't consumed any in about a year and a half. He and I tasted some at my party this last July, and I had to agree -- I just didn't get my previous fascination with the stuff. I'm not saying it's bad whiskey however. The point is that a couple years ago, it was on my "top ten" list, and today I am at a loss to explain why. Tastes do indeed change over time.

The constants for me over the years have been (amongst a very few others) WT 101 and Blanton's. Those two have withstood my personal test of time.

Really enjoying my small collection but the EC 12 is confusing me. Everytime I taste it, it seems different from what I remembered. Not to say its bad or good, just different.

Well, 8 months later I have the following open on the "bar":

EC18
WTRR101
BMH14
GTS 2004
GTS 2005 (fall)
GTS 2006
AAA
PVW15
CC13
Hirsch 16

other:

THH
Bushmills

About 5 of those are running pretty low and should be finished soon. In fact, the EC18 is the same one I listed the last time I replied to this thread. I went from loving this stuff (first pour) to not being too impressed by this quite fast. It's not bad bourbon but it will probably always be disapointing in comparison to what I thought I tasted and thought I smelled the first time I had this.
