It's getting worse.
Tonight I opened a bottle of Maker's Mark I didn't even know I had; it's delicious. Simple, straightforward bourbon. Too easy to drink, too easy to like.
I know it puts out for everyone, but I'm helplessly drawn to it.

Dave, my problems with Maker's Mark are price and lack of finish -- I'd prefer less of the former, and more of the latter. What's there in the glass is, I agree, very good.

The KS seemed shellac-like tonight; I didn't finish it. The WT 12 y/o was tasty, but not as good as I remember. The TH rye was interesting -- it reminded me of freshly brewed red ale -- but not the treat I had been expecting. It needed quite a bit of water to keep it from assaulting my palate.
Could it be that I'm just in a crappy mood? I hope so. Otherwise, the recreational value of my liquor collection has just dropped significantly.
Yours truly,
Dave Morefield

Messed around a bit last night and vatted Old Forrester 100 and EW 1783. The results were real good...for some reason, it reminded me a bit of some SW Old Fitzgeral Prime I had recently...with a touch of rye spiciness.

Tonight is wheater night!!!!! I'm currently on ORVW 10 107. A very enjoyable dram to say the least. I like it more and more the closer I get to emptying the bottle. Next will be Lot B, it's been a little while.
And to finish off the evening......WLW '06! I tried this at Whiskey Fest but my taste buds were fried! Tonight that will not be the case.
Spring Stagg 2006. Ohhhhh....very good!!

There is no spring Stagg for 2006. The Fall 2006 Release is 140.6 proof.
CrispyCritter
11-30-2006, 19:00
Actually, the '06 Stagg is a fall release. The '05 Spring Stagg was an unusual extra release - Stagg and the rest of the BTAC are normally only released in the fall.
As for my pours tonight, I started out with Islay peat, a pour of Ardbeg 10. Then I followed it with a pour of '06 Larue. Mmmmmmmmmm, on both counts!
Continuing on the wheater theme, I'm now sipping some Old Fitz BIB. I'd have to say that this is a whiskey that's better than its price would indicate... wheated bourbon's answer to Rittenhouse BIB rye.

We had a little freezing rain and then plenty of snow here in northwest IL. No power outages, at least in my neck of the woods. I just finished blowing out my drive-way and am sitting down to a healthy pour of OGD BIB.
Had an interesting tasting tonight with some friends, we sampled some bourbon and malt whisky. I chose 4 whiskeys to give something of a range.
They were:
- 1980's National Distillers Old Taylor
- Vintage Bourbon 17 years old
- Magic Cask of Compass Box (vatting of 17 year old wine-cask-finished Linkwood and a 14 year old Brora)
- 24 year old Port Ellen cask strength (3rd release).
The audience was highly intelligent and interested in fine drinks but knew little of their composition and history; I filled in that gap, somewhat. :)
The feeling was the bourbons were highly flavored and the 17 year old was superior to the Old Taylor by its rounded taste and complexity.
But the group generally liked the malts better, especially the Port Ellen although some admired the plush, elegant Magic Cask.
I liked them all but I'd give especial plaudits to Magic Cask and the Kulsveen's 17 year old bourbon whiskey.

Tonight was a Rittenhouse BIB cocktail night for me. First off, a Cocktail a la Louisiane (http://www.cocktailchronicles.com/2006/11/15/cocktail-a-la-louisiane/), sort of a cousin to the Sazerac. 1:1:1 of rye, red vermouth, and Bénédictine, with a few dashes of Peychaud's Bitters and pastis. Very nice!
Then, an oversize Red Hook, always a favorite of mine.
Some 06 WLW. First time I've had a chance to sit back and sip this, well worth the wait!
I am trying to stretch a bottle of GTStagg and WTKentucky Spirit out to have some for Christmas, (but I don't think I'll make it).
So last weekend I opened a bottle of Johnny Drum 8 yo, and like the horse in Ren and Stimpy would say, "No Sir, I don't like it."
So today, (oh BTW, I hit the GTS and WTKS again last night), I opened up a bottle of Kentucky Pride. Like Johnny Drum it is bottled by KBD and also charcoal filtered, so I thought I would not like it.
I should say I have had several KBD brands that I do like.
But this turned out to be OK. Not overly complex, nice carmel/vanilla taste, no burn at all, 90 proof, 10 years old, but seems younger, kinda light to me, I am sipping it neat right now, will try it on the rocks next.
Last night I learned of some new bourbon brands.
We went out to dinner, to one of Jackson's best resturants.
When asked if we would like to have something to drink after we were seated, I asked what kind of bourbons do you have?
She replied, "Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Cutty Sark and Johnny Walker."
I have heard of the Beam, but the other three "bourbons" were new to me.
So I ordered a bottle of Budweiser, and eventually went for the steak.
And hit the Stagg and Turkey when we got home.

I'm having some fun and opening a dusty bottle I found today. It's an Old Taylor 100 proof BIB that's a National Distillers product (Frankfurt, KY). It's got a UPC code so I figure it's from the eighties. The following no doubt has meaning to somebody here :) - DSP Ky 19 bottled at DSP Ky 14.
It's really good! It's round and has a long, caramelly finish. And the proof is making the cold snap around here disappear quite nicely.

Does it look like there ever was a tax stamp across the top with distilled and bottled dates? Sometimes age has faded this info or it got torn at the liquor store.
If there never were dates on a tax stamp, that makes it one of the very, very last bottlings from DSP KY 19 (or they just used up their old back labels before printing new ones ;) ), and bottled at at least 10 years of age for a bourbon designed to be bottled at about 6 years.
The S72-S82 I have is one of the best bourbons I've ever tasted.

Walnettos, Dave! Damn, I may have to make another trip to KY! I have the remains of a 3-pound bag of Walnettos candies on my kitchen counter -- I just had a half-dozen with in the past hour -- ordered in from out of state and given to me as an early holiday gift.
I tasted Kentucky Pride once early in my bourboneering, and remember thinking it okay without being exceptional. Revisiting it today would not be without merit.

I read your review, and I have to agree with it, you nailed it, but I do like Kentucky Pride.
Mine states barreled in 12-30-92, bottled 1-27-05.
By my calculations that is 12 years and a month, but has a 10 year old medallion on it.
I got it for $30.00 at Toddy's in Bardstown, but I won't get another.
Add another 5 spot and get 2 EC12yo.

A couple of pours of Old Fitzgerald BIB, finishing off the bottle.
Since I'm in a "draw down long-opened bottles" mode at this point, I'm going to be having a fair bit of Scotch in the coming days... although my WTRB is low enough that it will get attention as well. I also need to revisit my long-forgotten Old Potrero 90.

I take that back. While not a standout bourbon, it provides great bang for the dollar.
A bit yeasty and mushy in flavor, but has a nice aroma with some clay, licorice and fruitcake, among other things.

I little pour of VW Lot B. I was initially somewhat disappointed in this. I though, "Mmm. This is good. What is all the fuss about? If it were on the shelves and half the price I would keep a bottle open all the time, but I don't really get it."
Tonight, I find I like it more. I'm not doing cartwheels or anything, but I'm liking it more and more. We will see how the bottle progresses.

I had a similar experience with Lot B. I thought 'nice enough' but what's all the hoopla? Every time I have it I like it more and more.
Trying my first pour from my bottle of Willett 22yo Single Barrel Rye Whiskey that I just got (thanks Jake!) the day before Thanksgiving. Outstanding stuff! Very spicy, obviously. The very high alcohol content is a bit overpowering, but I wouldn't want to give up the richness of the rye whiskey flavor either.
Happy Repeal Day!!

I find this post so telling. I fell in love with this as soon as I tasted it. I can recognize it blind, and am not afraid to say that it is the only bottle that I can say makes that claim. We all have our Lot B's, only under different labels and iterations.

Old Grand Dad BIB.
I had hoped to join in with the December BOTM, OGD 114, but it's not available locally. In fact I'd wager a bottle from my top shelf that there's no OGD 114 anywhere within the 8,000 square miles of Yavapai County.
The BIB is one of the best buys in bourbon. It's both spicy and sweet on the nose. Both elements carry forward to the palate, which has a little tingle at the end. The rather scant finish is mainly spicy, a little dry, but not flinty.
This is one that Beam does right.
Yours truly,
Dave Morefield
Old Grand Dad BIB
For 13 bucks it's hard to beat. Plus the tacky orange labeled bottle goes with the girlfriend's fall decorating scheme. I don't understand why Beam doesn't put a little marketing behind it. The local liquor store has approx. 24 750 ml bottles of Beam white on the shelf and no more than 4 OGD BIB at any given time. When you compare taste, proof plus the fantastic orange lable it beats the Beam white hands down.

First tonite was some Handy which I am still trying to determine how much I like, some nights it is just a higher proof version of Saz Jr., other nights it is a more complex, thick rich Rye that shows a vast depth of flavor the Jr. does not show. Anyway I like it, just trying to find a common ground with it, but sometimes it leaves a scratchy soreness to my throat that I am not thrilled with.
After that was something that caught me off guard. A while back I bought a couple of Weller Centennial L'ville bottlings and opened one almost immediately which I was somewhat unthrilled with. Well I think it just needed a breath of fresh air because now it is singing massive flavor, caramel vanilla cotton candy with a cinnamony sweet red hot finish. Yeah now I am happy I bought these, similar to ORVW15, just maybe a bit more subdued.
Peter Jake's Private Keep.
I've had it for a while but just now getting to it.
The nose is kinda bland, so after that I was not expecting much. But the taste explodes after a half-second in.

I just had generous double pour of JB at my little girls Nutcracker performance served in a plastic tumbler. Not having the best of luck finding glass. I've never had JB before (sorry JB virgin) but I'm not sure that 4yr 80pr is there flagship. It was very smooth and uneventful like a flat cola. The upside is it didn't react violently with the yogurt that I just ate. I'd would certainly like to climb the proof-age-selection ladder of the JB line before leaving a serious remark. I'd keep a bottle around when water just won't do.

So I decided to have a Makers. The bartender says "do you want that with Coke?" I say "no, don't ruin it mate, I'll have it neat." So he comes back with a Makers that has more ice than I knew could fit in a glass. I say nothing. I then return after my Makers...thinking about having a WR. I asked to see the bottle. As the girl behind the bar hands it to me, she says "I think it's 15 years old, if that's what you're looking for". (don't know where she came up with that!). I say "No, actually I was looking to see whos signature was on the bottle". She thinks I'm a freak, as I dont want the Chris Morris WR and I ask for a Basil Hayden NEAT. As she turns around her male counterpart already has a glass crammed with ice waiting for her. She says "he wants it neat" and he is totally puzzled and asks me if I want ice. "Mate, if I wanted ice, I probably would have asked for it on the rocks, not neat" -what's with these people??? Anyways, moral of the story is, Basil Hayden is much nicer than I remember it, and the steak was great too.

Scott,
Why didn't you want the Chris Morris WR? I just happen to have an unopened bottle in it's nice woodn' box.

Tonight I am drinking my personal favorite, Elijah Craig 18 yo, while watching Octopussy on my way through all of the Roger Moore Bond films in order (been at this for about a week now).
I love the complexity and the depth of flavors this bourbon offers.
Mmmmmmmm.

I have only just seen Chris Morris bottles surface here in oz.....I have only had Lincoln Henderson bottles, which I have 3 of left. I have seen many different opinions on here of WR and it seems to have changed since the early LH bottles, so I dont want to destroy the image I have of WR if the newer stock isn't as nice....if you get what I mean.

Joel, I'm with you there. I tried for 4 years to get Elijah 18 sent to Australia. Finally found someone who would send it to me (if only I discovered this site and Binnys earlier) and I have to say it was worth the wait, all the build up, the anticipation, I was far from disappointed
For sure one of my favourites.

Two pours of ORVW 10/90 really hit the spot last night while I was wrapping gifts (I'm very slow at wrapping).

Today is one of those times when I can see a little light at the end of the tunnel. I work tomorrow, then I will be off until next Friday!
So, I am having a nice pour of Henry McKenna 10-yr BIB with a small splash of water. Right now, I would say it is as good as any bourbon I've ever tasted. First rate!

Just popped my first ever Pappy 20 to hang with the SB boys for a spell. Very exiting pour, an intial burst of flavors, smooth and warming with a great fruity, very pleasing and lingering finish. Excuse me while I pour another...

Just goes to show how palates differ, I had a large pour of the same and I wasn't impressed. It is good, but just not a lot there to me... I defenitely notice that minty almost listerine like flavor - not really in a bad way just kind of different.

I just went through the top shelf with a good friend, Mike, for a head to head.
It was ETL over Blantons and EWSB over MM for both of us. I liked ER while he prefered WR all while enjoying buffalo wings, shrimp, cheeze-pepperoni and crackers. Unfortunately when it came time to step it up to the next level AHH vs. Pappy 20 Mike's comment card read "undecided too many shots" which I had to take as a default as he was fading fast. I have to say that ETL made a great showing. It was good to eliminate Blantons, MM and WR from the our playing field today. Mike's son came and picked him up a few minutes ago and he took the ER I gave him home. The last time we did this he backed into my garage.

Having a small pour of Bookers. Earlier I had a WT RB Manhattan followed by and a healthy pour of BT, also a small sip of Georgia Moon. I intend on posting a few questions regarding that one in another forum.
Bulleit with the juice of half lemon and tonic water over a few ice cubes. I intended to do this a bir earlier this evening but anyway it's good.

In methaphorical communion with Santa tonight, I'm traversing the world with a mini-pour (c. 10ml) migration girding the globe, as follows (I'm currently on the El Dorado):
Christmas Eve 2006 World Tour
Columbia Valley, Washington: 1999 Hogue Cabernet Sauvignon Vineyard Selection
Alameda, California: St. George Single Malt Whiskey Lot 3
Owensboro, Kentucky: 1976 Fleischmann’s Bicentennial KSBW
Louisville, Kentucky: Stitzel-Weller Distillery (Kentucky Bourbon Society W.L. Weller 12yo KSBW)
Lawrenceburg, Kentucky: Wild Turkey Jimmy Russell Tribute 15yo KSBW
Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania: Michter’s Sour Mash Whiskey (101 proof)
Summersville, West Virginia: Isaiah Morgan Rye Whiskey (unaged)
Demerara, Guyana: El Dorado 5yo Rum
Anguilla, British West Indies: Pyrat’s Planters Gold X.O. Rum
Oporto, Portugal: Osborne’s 1997 Late Bottled Vintage Port
Dublin, Ireland: Jameson 12yo Irish Whiskey
Dalmuir, Scotland: McClelland’s Lowlands Single Malt (Auchentoshan)
Jarnac, France: Courvoisier V.S.O.P. Cognac
Yamakazi, Japan: Suntory Royal blended whisky
I also could have thrown in cashew wine from Belize, tequila from Mexico, Milford Malt Whiskey from New Zealand, and wines from Spain, Argentina, Chile, New Zealand, Australia, Hungary and probably a rum and/or wine from a few other places – but one has to draw a line somewhere! :toast:
A Merry Christmas to all...

Merry Christmas SB.com.
A great idea and the last pour of the night will be some of Pappy Christmas. Until that hour arrives, which could be a while yet, just finished the last of my OGD 114 and going on now to some OC Proprietor's Reserve to be followed with WT12 then........maybe Pappy - or - WTRB and Pappy soon thereafter. Indeed, a grand evening of bourbon in my household. What a night!
A bit of the old FC103. :) Merry Xmas everyone!
A small pour of Eagle Rare SB. Merry Christmas everyone!

Actually, Saz is not a very good bourbon, but a very drinkable Rye

I cracked open the only christmas gift I wanted and got tonight the new Slipknot 2 Disc DVD Voliminal (don't ask) and have had a little Pappy 20, WT 8 year and now some Willett Estate Rye - needs a little watering down to open up and then it is really nice stuff!
Still only on disc 1 so something tells me I'll either get to work late tomorrow or maybe not at all.... It is hard to explain but once you start something like this you just can't stop it half way through.............
....... and disc 2 begins ........ Eagle Rare 17 next perhaps.

Welcome, and be advised there will be quite a collection of us in Bardstown, KY for the KY Bourbon Festival Sampler the last Saturday (actually, the whole weekend) of April, the 28th. It's a good meet-and-greet opportunity.
I took a peek at your website -- most interesting and entertaining, but I think I'll probably retain my interest chiefly in a bottle's contents.
I had a pour of Pappy 20 year old.
Now I am into a pour of WT Kentucky Spirit.
I know the Pappy 20 is ledgendary, and I love it.
But one thing that I look for in a bourbon in depth. I think the WTKS has it over the Pappy.
Also there is an initial sweetness in the WTKS before the heat comes on that I like.
A mixture of JB White label and FC103 at about a 1.5:2 ratio, respectively. It's not too bad but unfortunately there is more of the thin, woody taste of the white label than there is the FC103's sweetness.

Freaking drama tonight. I grabbed an 06 WLW, 129.9 proof, to open up today. Well, I went to a store today which I know carries them, and I knew would have them. The store is overpriced, and I only buy from them when I can't get it anywhere else.
Well, I got the bottle, tossed it in the car, drove home, and then I pulled it out. It leaked. Great.
I go to pull the cork out and replace it with that of a Stagg I just finished, it nreaks off. Even better.
So I get the wine cork puller out, extract the cap, and proceed to drop a bunch of cork pieces in the bottle.
Now what? I spend the next fifteen minutes fishing cork pieces out of my bottle with a barbecue skewer.
I think I'll have a beer. Whiskey done pissed me off tonight.
I am having my first taste of Van Winkle 12 Lot B. I have read to many good things about this, I had high expectations.
The color is a rich caramel.
The nose is fruity with a hint of pepper.
The taste is fruity and creamy
The finish is slightly spicy, but like I just finished a caramel apple.
Nice when the product meets the expectations. A great Bourbon.
Now look what you made me do...
I thought I was finished after a few "red riders" made with WLW SR.
After reading your post I had to have a pour of my new Lot B that I just got for Christmas.
A great finish to the evening...

Started with WT-03RB.....no weakness here anywhere. From first sip to last, always dependable, always a friend. Finished with a generous pour of the current BOTM, OGD 114, with an ice cube in the middle. It doesn't get much better. I should pack it in for the night but now eyeing that Ezra B15 I picked up last week.....maybe a small pour, maybe not.....maybe tomorrow night. As everyone advised, the Ezra 15 is a bit woody but still pleasant enough for my taste and definitely worth the money.

Tonight - or this morning I guess I should say, it has been ERSB followed by WTRR (101) and now finishing up with the last shot from a ORVW 15......been a smooth, smooth rainy evening.
Addendum: Not as much left in the ORVW bottle as expected. So, moving on to one last pour - OGD 114.......just can't say enough good things about this one!
WT RR 90, for breakfast. For some reason, this bourbon tastes best to me in the morning.

It is an ice storm here in Kansas City. The State of Missouri is in a state of emergency and they are calling out the national guard. I did manage to go to Walmart, Lowe's and Aldi's even though the weather is rough. Because I am camping in, I figured I'd have a little and I have this bottle of Very Old Barton 86 proof. It is really nice whiskey. I got a new job in Knoxville TN starting February 1. I guess they sell this in TN right? I like this VOB better than Elmer T. Lee.
