View Full Version : Hello There! Oz person getting into Bourbon.

Hello everybody,

I have joined this forum because over the last few months I've found I've developed a taste for Bourbon, and I want to learn more about it.

It started when I saw a bottle of Elijah Craig 12YO on special - took it home and thought "yeah I like this stuff!". Then I came on here as a lurker to research it and found that it was a generally esteemed drop. I really like it, but I wonder whether different bottles taste different sometimes.

Since then, I have bought a bottle of Makers Mark, basically because I had heard so much about it. It's OK, but doesn't seem to have the delicious nose of EJ. It seems to have a less complex flavour as well. Maybe that's to appeal to the maximum possible number of people.

I have also tried Wild Turkey, but thought I was a bit 'chemical'. I wouldn't choose to drink it unmixed.

Generally I'm drinking these bourbons neat at first, then on ice. If I do mix them, I'm making my own version of a whiskey sour, that is with a very little bit of Bickfords lemon cordial and soda water on ice.

Finally, I'm in Australia and I always thought our liquor prices were round about the same or perhaps even slightly cheaper than in the US. Maybe I'm getting my metric - imperial and currency conversions wrong but it seems that for Bourbon, at least, we are paying substantially more than you folks in the US.

Anyway that's enough for now. I will mainly lurk on this forum, trying to learn more.

Firstly, welcome to the forum! Always good to see more Aussies getting into bourbon! If you like the Elijah Craig, I would recommend getting a bottle of Evan Williams Single Barrel. It is made by the same folk as the EC at Heaven Hill Distillery, and it should be available at the same store you purchased the Elijah at, as you can only get them both at Coles liquor stores (Liquorland, Vintage Cellars & First Choice) EWSB runs for about $45.
Maker's Mark is a wheat recipe bourbon, and they are a little milder. There are better wheat recipe offerings, but unfortunately MM is it for us down under.
Where about in Oz are you??

Also, if you think the Elijah Craig 12 is good......we should have the 18 year single barrel available in Australia by Christmas. It will probably be about triple the price of the 12yo, but a nice one to have all the same!

welcome to the gang! do you have access to duty free shops? there might be a wider variety to chose from. good luck and good hunting.

I can only re-iterate what Scott said regarding products Downunder. We unfortunately have limited supplies.

Oscar, that is definately true - we have none of those products readily available to us. There is one store in Melbourne that stocks Van Winkle for the entire country, and a second store that imports some of the other products you mention, but their prices are high because they are a single outlet....

Mostly Scott and I import from Binnys..

And at $400 for Pappy 20..............I have better ways to spend my money:grin: It's a fantastic bourbon, but I wouldn't pay that much for it!

I've seen Evan Williams, but I don't know if it's the bottle you're referring to. I think it was around $35.

do you have access to duty free shops?There is a local duty free store. To be honest I haven't been in there because I think it's mainly camera equipment, etc, but I'll have a look. In my area there is mainly 'chain' liquor stores but I'm sure more specialised stores in Sydney should have a better selection.

Back again :)

Any news on the EC18YO in Australia? I'd really like to try that one.


As far as I can tell, EJ products are not being stocked by Coles-Myer stores. (That's not a problem, by the way).
