While out looking for Weller Centennial I picked up a bottle of
Wild Turkey Kentucky Spirit
Bottled 11-02-06
Barrel No 137
Warehouse F
Rick No 49
dark wood top

This is the first I have since I got one that was bottled 2-07-07 light wood top last October that I was not very fond of.
Sipping today's purchase now, ahh this is the bird that I love.

I picked up George Dickel Original Tennessee Whisky No. 12.

Super. I like it! I picked up DALMORE Single Highland Mal 12 Years Scotch also.

Side by side: I like Dickel better. My opinion: As far as value goes (best bang for your buck): Dickel $20 over Dalmore $30

Current bourbon status:

I have 3 bourbons: Old Grand Dad, Buffalo Trace and todays Dickels. I say Buffalo Trace is best value. VERY similar to Dickel but a bit more spicer! (Dickel is considered Tennessee and not bourbon.....so not sure if that fits this question)

Dickel isn't bourbon but most of us here like it and welcome it.

Another dozen Weller Centennials. The 13 yr is about gone. Bourbon fans, not scalpers have been buying it up left and right.

Nice Spun, wish my wife would let me get a couple pallets myself (she already thinks I've lost it) so I'll just have to stick with my 12 http://www.straightbourbon.com/forums/images/icons/icon9.gif. What a great bourbon.

Well, I went out to a couple of places today to pick up some new bourbons to try. Decided on, 1.Wellers 12 year old, 2.1792 Ridgemont Reserve, and 3.Elmer T. Lee Single Barrel. Also snagged a bottle of Forty Creek Canadian Whiskey and a mini bottle of Bulleit Bourbon for my collection. Now I have to decide which one to try tonight. Any suggestions? Looking forward to your replies. Joe

I went out looking for a bottle of Kentucky Spirit and ended up empty handed, although the store owner was happy to hear that it is available in Ohio so he's ordering a case (and I've got two bottles earmarked). I had to settle for some new tasting glasses from Crate and Barrel.

That would depend on if you wanted to drink the best 1st.. or the other way around.

I like the Elmer T. Lee, best of the bottles you listed.

This weekend I visited about 6 stores. Picked up a Dickel because I tried a #8 and didn't like it all that much so thought I give it another shot.

Last stop was the best where i found some Saz and Ardbeg.

EC 12 for $12.99
Dickel #12 -$22
Sazerac 18 2007(2) - $59
Ardbeg 10 - $45

Today we made a trip through "Jack" and "George" country (Lynchburg and Tullahoma). I did happen to stop in and pick up a bottle of Bourbon. I ran across a bottle of Evan Williams white label. I cannot buy this stuff in my area. I bought a small bottle the last time I was in Chattanooga and really enjoyed it, so I got a bigger bottle today. I am pretty excited about kicking back with it tonight. I also found another bottle of Rittenhouse Rye about a week ago. The store that usually carries that in my area was out . I love a good glass of the Rittenhouse then finishing off with the Evan Williams. I have been stuck with the black label for some time so am pretty excited about the white label. I think I am going to pick up a bottle of either WT101 or JB Black this weekend. I have had the WT before and really enjoyed it but have not tried the JB as of yet, so I'll go with the smaller bottle. Still in search of the Old Granddad in my area. I do tend to lead towards the rye'd whiskeys more, I love the bite they have:bigeyes:.

I finally located a bottle of Old Kentucky Tavern BIB. I have been looking for a bottle for quite some time. A few days ago, thanks to a fellow SB member, I found out that Ohio's Liquor Control Dept. had updated its website. I looked through the bourbon listings and found it on the list. I made a call and found out a store a few miles from my workplace had some. Even though it isn't a dusty, I'm still glad to finally have a bottle!

Went shopping today and did something I promised my wife I wouldn't do....buy bourbon. My store isn't open yet and as such I don't have income coming in so therefore, bourbon purchases have been on hold since late last year. I was doing some dusty looking over the last couple of days and today I was struck by bourbon demon. My brother and I walked into a store today and lo and behold what was on the shelf?

2x 2000 Saz 18
1x 2000 ER 17

I had no choice but to purchase both of the Saz 18's and the ER 17. My wife has been somewhat understanding.....

I also found a 1984 Old Overholt, a couple 200's of Early Times KSBW from early 80's, maybe even late 70's (no UPC) and a tax stamped Town Tavern of which I know nothing about.

Don't you hate that? I have bottles that I would like to open but resist in order to maintain a reasonable number of open bottles. I know, I know....if you have it...drink it. I have over 200 bottles and I don't think it would be good to open that many. I keep somewhere between 15-20 bottles open at a time.

Well, I have found that the tastes are changing on many of my favorites... I really want to keep them around, but they are not going to be the same in a year... I need to enjoy them before they lose what I like about them....

I know that this will bring some flame, but I think that you need to drink an open bottle within 6 months... after that, it just is not the same... although a never opened bottle will last years (many years) a half open bottle does not......

Picked up WT101 last Friday. As a true beginer, I thought I'd compare it against my existing collection: JB White and Basil Hayden.

JB White: the opposite of smooth (but drinkable)
BH: Smooth, but a little bland
WT101: Nice taste, but strong (I preferred a few ice cubes to mellow it)

The next night, I made a couple Manhattan's with the WT101 for some company and myself. We all agreed the WT101 was too strong, and threw off the balance of the drink. At this point, I prefer the JB White for a Manhattan.

If you can locate some Rittenhouse Rye in your area, that is the best stuff for making a Manhattan. If you cannot find Rittenhouse, try Fighting Cock(a bit on the hot side) or Old Grand Dad, anything with a high Rye content. Just don't go by way of a Canadian Whiskey to get the rye flavor, it's not there.

6 more bottles of Weller Centennial that was bottled for Julio's Liquors.
It's a 13 yo btw.
I did not know FedEx delivered on Saturday.

The Sazerac Rye that is not from the BTAC is referred to as Baby Saz.
A few months ago I has drinking Eagle Rare 101 10yo New Orleans bottle and it was very similar to GTStagg, the same praline and pecans, I dubbed it Baby Stagg.
Last night I had some William Larue Weller from the 2007 BTAC followed up by some of Julios Centennial and I gotta say it is very similar to the WLW, the same carmel and dark fruits, so I now christian this Centennial as Baby Larue.

Made a haul tonight. A friend of mine manages a local bar. He's been trying to get rid of some of their stuff that doesn't sell. Stuff that's been in their liquor room for a few months. I got three unopened 1 liter bottles of Knob Creek, one open 1 liter bottle of Knob Creek, (about 90% full), and five unopened 750 ml bottles of Jim Beam Black. The whole ball of wax for $100.00. Talk about getting lucky. Things like this just don't happen to me very often. Well, looks like I'm stocked up for a while. If I make it to the June Sampler or the KBF, I know what I'll be bringing. Gonna have some Knob Creek right now to celebrate. Joe

Not purchased today but a couple of days ago and I wanted to post a Thank You to Bromike for the heads up on these.

Its a wonder how a distributer can 'lose' bottles for a while, but I am sure glad they found them!

The one seems to have a minor leak under the cap that I didn't notice until I got home, so I'll have to open that one first and make sure there is no glass chipping under the lid or anything... Maybe it should get sent to the SB.com Lab for further analysis? :skep:

By the way, the same store also has (pending prior sale, of course) three Parker's HCs. I didn't check the proof, but the 127.4 is the only one I've seen, to date, distributed here. Again, PM me if you're heading to Bardstown and can't find it.

Mark,

I've been meaning to get back to you on the Baby Saz question you asked earlier. I'm still good. I've got one full bottle and three fourths of an oppen bottle.

It looks like I'll be getting down to Peoria (where I can buy Baby Saz) on a monthly basis. My dog's eye medicine, the Cyclosporin, the vet doesn't like to mail the stuff. But thank you very much for the offer.

By the way, if you haven't tried the Stranahan's, I recommend you give it a try. It is youngish, but it really grows on you.

Grabbed a bottle of WT Tribute in a nice little store I found. Pretty surprised to see that he still had some considering the fact that the manager was telling me about how his upper shelf stock is pretty much all selected by enthusiasts. Might give this one a try tonight, I figure it would be a good idea to open it while I still have some AS open.
At the same store I also found some French cider that I've never seen before, Bordelete Sydre Argelette (2002 vintage). It was pricey and the only other vintage cider I had wasn't so great but I figured what the hell.

Many thanks to Spun_Cookie, who through his excellent math skills convinced me that it would be much cheaper to buy a bottle of PVW23
and split the cost with two friends, than to buy a shot at the place down the street. Per Spun's suggestion, I got the "B" version, Bottle # B4462.

It was $199 for the bottle at Party Mart on Brownsboro Rd. Each of us got 250ml of PVW23 for a little over $66 apiece...that's less than $13.50 per 1.5oz pour, rather than $36 a pour at MM Tavern or $47 at The Brown.

My boss, Don, one of those bourbon fans, insisted that I decant their portions in his office rather than the kitchen, so that Pappy smell would linger there! (In fact, Don spent the rest of the day breathing deeply through his nose like the folks in those Febreze commercials do)

Christian,
Is there a bottle date? I have always thought the the Gov. warning started in 1989...this appears to be pre 1987, with the upc and Bib designations.
Still a really sweet pick up. Wish I had seen 'er. Can't wait for the taste report.

That is not the Government warning you may be thinking of, it is more a warning about the filling of the bottle as a bonded bourbon. There is an "83" on the bottom of the bottle Jeff.

Found out that one of my two favorite liquor stores was going out of business. Hurried over after work and managed to pick up four bottles of ERSB 10/90 for $18.89 each, a bottle of WTRB for $24.49 and a bottle of RR 90 for $18.49. I also got eight wine/bourbon glasses for a dollar each. I made out like a bandit. Saved over $50.00. I pretty much wiped out all the bourbon they had left except for one more bottle of RR 90 and a whole bunch of JB Black. Wish I would have found out three weeks ago. They were the only store around here that had Lot B. Still, I'm pretty happy. Got some good stuff for myself and some that I can bring with me to the KBF. Gazebo here I come! Joe

It's not bourbon (or is it? See other current threads!), but in the duty free of a U.S. airport recently I picked up Silver Select, a November '07 bottling from Rick L-04 (this from memory). A good bottling but I still think the February 1 Rick 19 bottling is the best I've ever had. A member of this board is now in possession of same and I'm hoping to read his comments here soon to see whether I'm out to lunch on this.

Also bought some Buffalo Trace on this trip (a little too earthy for me), some 1792 (good but a little spirity) and Sazerac rye (excellent, soft and rich).

What they did have, for the first time ever, was PVW15 and it was slightly cheaper than I've seen it in a while ($43.99) so I grabbed that along with a Weller Antique 107. The woman at the counter laughed when I got to the register and said she'd just put the PVW15 out and she knew I'd buy it. :) Then I cashed in my $5 lotto ticket and put another $5 towards a scratch off blackjack ticket and won $50. The PVW15 was almost free. :)

.

Penny and I are going on a cruise in September. On this one, for the first time I was going to stick to trying a different bourbon or rye each night for comparison and stay away from the "umbrella" drinks.

I know the main bar in the atrium on Carnival ships looks pretty stocked but I never really concentrated on just bourbon (the only bourbon I can remember having on a ship is Blanton's)

Is there enough choice to do that, or is it slim pickins bourbon-wise? And is that why you have to "sneak" Stagg aboard?

I have not been on a Carnival cruise, but in general cruise ships have a very poor selection when it comes to whiskey. Besides, if they let you take it on board, why not avoid the huge mark-up they charge, especially if you don't need the services of a bartender to make difficult cocktails?

Officially, they don't let you bring it onboard. If you declare it, they'll confiscate it and give it back to you at the end of the cruise (maybe). If you don't declare it, they'll confiscate it and we'll see...But, most bottles hidden in checked baggage make it through if safely packed, as few bags are actually opened and checked.
That said, Carnival's bar selection ain't bad. Eighteen months ago, it included Blanton's at all bars -- the only time I've really been glad to see it -- Old Grand-Dad 86 proof, and Wild Turkey 8yo, which you can have delivered to your cabin (opened) via room service for then-$40. The latter might have tempted me if the bottle had been sealed, but I was cruising solo so didn't bother, since I could order it at the bars. Plus, I'd packed a stash in my checked baggage, of course:grin:.

I did Carnival last year.. the OGD was bad... the Blantons was not bad, but cost to much... the WT we had on ours was the 101...

I brought some... so I was OK.. and when I ran out I got some off ship, put it through the X-ray and it passed right through.. it is more of a "balls" test than anything else.. the guys looking at the X-ray care about things that go boom.. not that go into a glass...

Regarding liquor on cruises..... We cruise fairly often, the last being on the Queen Mary out of Brooklyn in March, and always take our own liquor on with us. We always take some good pinot noir's as well as a few special bourbons. We enjoy a few cocktails and a cigar each evening on the veranda and want to drink the best we have while on vacation. We almost always cruise with friends so mini coctail parties are also quite common. The selection of good pinot and great bourbon is typically a bit slim on even the better of lines.

We always pack our libations in a styrofoam wine carrier so it is easy to transport and protect. When we get to the dock we personally give it to one of the baggage handlers and ask them to treat it gently as well as providing a tip of $5-10. Never a problem when handled in this fashion or when packed in luggage.

I would be careful not to pack any liquor that is over 140 proof as it is not permitted to be checked on airlines. I have had bottles checked so take the 129/131 Stagg!!

Black Maple Hills 14yo single barrel bourbon (I've never seen it before but they're sure to point out it's limited editon).

It's not even made anymore but there's a lot of it still sitting around on store shelves.

A local store has it for $75 (the 11yo for $61 and the 16yo for $95) while another a little further away has the 21yo for $140.

What did you pay for yours?

Chupacabras

I paid 63 and it was from a store I go to all the time (I was even in Monday and it wasn't there). Who knows where it came from, but this store's good for unexpected bourbon finds. Oh, and it was the only bottle when I got there, though someone had taken the time to hang up tasting notes. The other surprise was seeing that young Colorado whiskey on the shelf for 58... it's apropos that it's stocked right next to the Old Whiskey River as I don't doubt they'll both be together for years to come.

I was in Lexington, KY earlier today, see the "Another 4Roses SB?" thread I picked up 30 bottles of 4R 120th, Tony's score, I was the mule.

While there I picked up a WTKentucky Spirit bottled 3-11-04, a WT101, and you'll never belive this,... a
Four Roses Jim Rutledge 40th Anniversary.
Bottle# 1377
Barrel# 17-1G
ABV 50.8

I asked if they had any Old Charter 101, he said no, but he had one in his office that he took a shot from and gave it to me!!!

I really like Kentucky!

Evan Williams SB 1996. There were a few 1997's too, but I left those for another time.

I just bought my first bottle of WT Rye 101. I'm itching for a pour, but some herbal supliment I took yesterday has wrecked my stomach, so my first sip of rye will have to wait.

Chris from Party Outlet (Shelbyville Rd) called me today and told me my Four Roses 120th was ready. I had called them before the 120th had gotten to the stores, just as I had called every big store in town to hedge my bets so I'd make sure to get some.

I ended up buying two of the lower proof versions at Liquor Barn (52.4%), and was about to say no thanks to Party Outlet, but asked him what the alc content was.

He said 56.1%, so since I wanted the higher proof, I said ok and skipped out around lunchtime to pick it up. It's Barrel 7-1N.

While I was there, on the shelf I saw Weller 12yr, which has been in short supply around here. So I bought that too for 21.99.

This is how the madness starts, isn't it?

Yes it is, but eventually that madness turns into normalcy and you won't notice anything odd about it.

Stopped at a liquor store on the way home last night. I was pleasantly surprised when I found some Old Weller Antique. Something they didn't have on previous visits. There is now a bottle in my side board. Not sure when I'll open it. Have a bunch already opened. Still......? Joe

Got in late last night, stopped at 2 stores on my way and one I had been in several time had a L'ville W.L. Weller SR so I grabbed it. He had a Jefferson's Reserve with the 15yr age statement as well but it's still there!
Passed on 2 centennials and a BHC Harper at the other place.
