Using a sphere of ice (as opposed to a cube) in your whiskey-rocks is nice because the round ice melts more slowly than the square stuff (better surface-area/volume ratio). Now a Japanese company has introduced a mold for making a perfect, seamless ice-sphere:

I'm glad to see that the Wikipedia article refers to the John Waters movie Pecker (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0126604/). That's where I was exposed to this term, so to speak.

While the movie didn't inspire me to experiment with this technique, it did lead me to buy a Canonet (http://www.camerapedia.org/wiki/Canon_Canonet_QL_17_GIII)on ebay. I love that little camera.

Very common in Japan. At better bars, you occasionally see bartenders picking away at blocks of to make a sphere for the whisky drinkers.
