With WT12 is it just a case of if you see it, buy it? Which of the other WT products is it closest in profile to?

wadewood

Probably Tribute or WT American Spirit; both at 15 YO.

Maybe Gilmanize 1/2 WTAS and 1/2 WTRR 101?

Thanks mate, I have had WT101, WTAS and RR101 so now I sort of know what to expect with it

Wade was right on his first choice, the 15 is very close in style to the 12 Gold label.
The 14 and 16 yr versions are similar to each other, as well, IMO. The KS didn't strike me as all that interesting when I tried it once. I might have to revisit that one.

Troy,
I would imagine the WT 12 you are talking about is the current duty free offering you can buy?

I would suggest Wade's Gillmanization suggestion of 1/2 WTAS and 1/2 RR101 would be close, infact I might try it tonight and compare!
The WTAS in my opinion is better quality than the current 12yo being offered duty free. In saying that though, it is a very good offering from WT.

Been out of the loop lately. But if I'm reading this right, if you see WT 12yo, definately get it. If you don't like it, someone here will gladly take it off your hands. I have three of these, and due to chaos in personal life, I've been unable to try it, and therefore can't compare to others. But if you do come across this very rare find, don't hesitate to pick it up!

P.S. Okay, just noticed mentioned of this duty free stuff. I didn't know WT still made the 12yo for anyone anywhere. Disregard the above. I'd better spend some more time here before I post next time. Sorry.

Get it, get it, get it... and I would be in line if you did not fancy it...

I would gather its the same as the duty free one. Looks almost identical to the 8 year old 101 but states " Aged 12 Years " and comes in a tube as opposed to the boxed 8 year old.

There were (at least) three renditions. The first is called the "cheezy gold foil", then there was a "split label" and also a "full label". I understand that the gold foil is the best of the three. Gold Foil is no longer available but split label or full label may still be found in some duty free shops. All have tubes.

Do all of the WT12's have date stamps on them?
I have a WT12 split-label (I found at a store, not in a duty free shop) that has a small date (02-06-97) stamped on the plastic neck wrapping.

The old split labels have a bottling date laser stamped on the neck. The old gold ones have slits cut in the side of the label that was used for bottling dates....unfortunately, you'd have to have one of their tools to figure out the madness!

Some WT12 gold foil bottles also have a 2-digit number - presumably a date - stamped into the bottom. For instance, I have a bottle with an "85" stamped on the bottom.

I believe there were actually 2 gold foil versions: one is the "cheesy" gold foil and the other is a "shadow" gold foil, in which the turkey on the label is silhouetted. Oscar (I think) has posted about it.

My WT12 gold foil has a 92 on the bottom and a date of 06/09/94 printed on the neckband. I figure the bottle was made in late 1992 and filled in June 1994!

Ok, so last night happened to be just the night for this experiment.
I got 2 WT shot glasses and poured a 50/50 mix of WTAS/RR101 into one and WT12 (current DF version) into the other.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/dickheadofthemonth/WT.jpg
- Color -
In the photo, the 50/50 mix looks darker, but that is due to their being more in the glass. The Gillmanization was what I would call medium amber and the WT12 was more of a deep copper

- Nose -
I'm not great on tasting notes, but here's what I found:
Nosing the bourbons I found the 12yo heavy char with dry leather and oak.
The mix was very sweet smelling with hints of Maple Syrup and Caramel:yum:

- Taste -
WT12 - Lots of oak & dry leather
The mix was awesome - lots of vanilla, caramel and butterscotch before the oak kicks in after about 6 seconds. The oak was not as prominent as the 12yo.

- Finish -
WT12 - dry lingering finish with heavy char
The mix - the sweetness eventually fades to dry leather.

Overall I was much more impressed with the mix, this is a good way to drink Wild Turkey.
I have never been fortunate enough to have any WT12 gold foils or split labels, but I find this current offering less that I would expect from all the good things I hear of it. I would buy RR101 or WTAS over this particular bottle any day, but for $50 duty free you can't go wrong!

Troy, (or anyone on here!) if you are ever in Brisbane feel free to come over for a drink!

A quick introduction as I was a long time lurker and relatively new to the bourbon scene.

I just picked up a WT 12 split label a week or so ago and tried it for the first time tonight. I have to say that this might be my new regular. i was drinking a lot of PVW 20, ER 10 and WT RR90, but I believe this is my new favorite. The local store has about 5(OCT 97) of these left and tomorrow they will be gone. They are about $45 but it is only money.

This thread gave me the inspiration to try it and I will be bunkering these for a while. Thanks for all the insight on this forum.

Welcome to the site, Seg. Are you sure it's THE 97? Not sure you want to get more of that one. If there are any Splits hanging around, it's usually the 97's. For a good reason...I'd take a pass on those.

How much for the two diff versions of the spilt label, gold foil and the complete gold covered 12 yrs?

I have seen the full goild foil skin on auction there for $100'ish, but I have not really looked much.

I've only got two in my bunker that I've yet to open, and they are both from 1997 (02/06/97 & 10/02/97). The only time I've ever had the split-label WT12 is at Randy's, and I thought it was very good, some of the best WT I've ever had! Now I hear you saying this about the only two bottles that I have. I wish I hadn't read this. Maybe you're just joking because it's a new guy asking about it, yeah that's the ticket (me, telling myself: "Yeah, he was only joking...ha-ha").

Gblick,
Haven't had the gold 12. Have had WT 8/12/14/rye/1855/AS.
My question is how the Gold (any) qualifies with the WTMDS 14?

Thanks in advance,

I have hear that the 14 is similar to the AS and the Gold blows the doors off of the AS, so I would assume that the gold blows the doors off the 14 as well.

Necessity is the mother of invention right?
So, if necessity and assumption breed, what do we get?

Nope. Nothing like the 14 (or Master's blah, blah, blah).

For anyone who hasn't searched and found enough evidence of it, the current export-only pales in comparison to the split label and gold foil that was originally sold here. I actually found the current 8year to be better than the 12year.

Really?

I find them to be different. By atleast 20 bucks.
Seriously though, they are a bit apart.
The 8yr is decent at it's price and the 12 yr is well 20 bucks different.
Value-wise the 8 year is where it's at. Especially, the 1000ml bottling.
