Who made J.W. Dant in Frankfort? I saw a label that said Dant, Frankfort.

Ancient Age made J W Dant Bib until it was sent over to old Bernheim and then off to HH in Bardstown. AA made it up to 1989ish and Bernheim for about two or three years....then HH from then on.

The Dant bourbon was probably made in Indiana, though it could have been a mix from any number of Schenley/UD distilleries.

Hope that was some help.

I don't want to start a new thread, but has anyone tasted the current JW Dant 80 proof? Is it anything to get excited about, or just another under-proofed legacy label?

I have a bottle of J.W. Dant BIB that was made in 1965 and bottled in 1971 and it lists Gethsemane and Frankfort on the front label. On the back is states made at DSP-KY-113 and bottled at DSP-KY-1. The label says the whiskey is 50 months old but according to the made and bottled dates, its closer to 6.5 years old. The tax stamp only says Dant Distilling company!

I'd say you could pay less and get more with other bourbons. Any other bourbon.

Thanks for the feedback, Tim. I think I'll leave it on the shelf.

Sounds like you have a transitional front label. After it had left Dant and swung over to Schenley. I would guess distilled at AA/BT and then sent over to Bernheim to age. I don't have the specifices on warehouse space in both distilleries, but would guess Bernheim has a bit more, so...aged there instead. IIRC, most of the Dant Bib production stayed at AA/BT until just a few years before it was sold to HH.

I've got some Dant distilled at DSP-KY 113 and bottled at DSP-KY 16. Go figure.

After, it left the original Dant distillery...I have seen DSPs 113, 2, 16, 31 on the labels.

16 was part of the UD empire before it merged into Diageo.

ok, found a sort-of-dusty (actually it was dirty) at the same store i found a Weller Special Reserve a year ago...

this is a .375 100 proof (doesn't say bonded on it anywhere) Dant.

the plastic top was actually slightly cracked (i didn't notice it at first!), but it seems fine. looks like nothing has evaporated.

anyways, on the back it says:

DISTILLED BYT HE DANT DISTILLERY COMPANY
DSP-KY-1 LOUISVILLE, KY
BOTTLED AT DSP-KY-31

is this fairly recent?

it tastes fine. interesting. a bit sweet. will make a good candidate for some vatting experiments.

hard finding more info here via the search option (threads with a million pages...)...any specific directions on getting info on DANT and this particular bottle?

That whiskey was distilled at Bernheim Louisville and bottled up at Heaven Hill in Bardstown.

Yes.

thanks joe...but is this recent as in 'now' or maybe a few years old? i only see the 80 proof Dant's...this is the 100.

and odd that i don't find much info on it here or on the web.

again, though, it's nothing to shout about. but it's interesting. and tastes 'OLDER'....very woody. a punch of spice. but the seems half of the symphony called in sick. it's a decent quartet...

and vats well with the 90 pound, i mean, 90 proof weakling in the corner (Ezra Brooks...)

Well, we know it was distilled no longer ago than nine years, and it was aged at least four, so the bottle is no more than five years old.

I'm surprised it doesn't say "bottled in bond" anywhere on it, since it's 100 proof and they went to the trouble of listing the DSP numbers. Are you sure it doesn't say BIB on the neck or something?

maybe a neck label came off or something...but i did look closer and on the back, written upside in very very small print, it does say J.W. Dant BIB

Up until recently, JW Dant Bottled in Bond was available in MS. It's no longer on the state ABC approved list. It was about $12 for a fifth. The 80 proof JW Dant Charcoal Perfected is still available for around $8 a fifth. I take a lot of flack from my friends but it's my usual go-to.

I will not give you flack but I do have a question! I have an old bottle of Dant Charcoal Perfected but it says 10 year old on it and it's tax stamped. What do you like about this pour? I have not opened this yet, just not a huge Dant fan and well I have enough open currently:grin:.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts on your go to bottle.

Cheers!

Does this conspicuously NOT say bourbon on the label? I saw a few of these around and never quite knew what they were.

Doug Doggie Dawg had one, of course, that we were going to try but never got around to before he self-exiled to Kentucky ;)

Tony,
Did you ever have Dant from the 50's made in Gethsamane? You might just change your mind.

Distilled at DSP-1 and bottled at DSP-31 basically means current production.
