Has the quality of COLA submissions always been so full of errors, or are they increasing due to the larger numbers of small distilleries?

Like this "Tennessee Crown Club" with a label stating "Texas Crown Club"
https://www.ttbonline.gov/colasonlin...13081001000486

Or like this one (one of several) from Koval stating one grain on the front label and another on the back:
https://www.ttbonline.gov/colasonlin...13047001000027

SKU had a great example from Zachory Boone where they claim a bourbon made from barley and malt mash:
http://recenteats.blogspot.com/2013/...o-zachory.html

It just goes on and on. Nevermind the TTB employee just signs off without even a cursory look, the distillers dont seem to give a flip either.

This weekend, I had the opportunity to stop by Finger Lakes Distilling and try some of their whiskeys (all of them were excellent, by the way!) What surprised me the most was how much I liked their Glen Thunder Corn Whiskey. I've tried a few white dog whiskeys and never wanted more than the first sip. GT has a lot of fresh corn flavor and I even get the same sweet biscuity flavors found in their other whiskeys, and even a touch of honey in there as well. This whiskey completely changed my perception of unaged whiskeys and it's the first one that I actually want to drink more of! Props to Tom and the folks at FLD for their fine spirits!

Prior to Prohibition there was a thriving brewing industry throughout the United States. The needs of the brewers, both large and small, created a substantial flow of malted barley from the grain maltsters.

During the same period in history the distillers, in additional to Rye and Bourbon, also produced malt whisky, sometimes labeled pure malt whisky. I've forgotten the distinction as to whether pure malt meant 100% malted barley or if it also applied to a mixture of malted and unmalted but the grain was barley none the less and it was unpeated.

Scots whisky as we know it today didn't come into prominence until later in the 19th century so the American malt whiskys were not simply Scottish influenced copies but their own thing run off column stills. Certainly not a widely popular style yet it was a presence on the American whisky scene.

When the question was posed earlier today over what mashbill we would like to see made pure malt occurred to me. I have purchased malts made by micros but they are not the same thing as they trace their roots to Scotland rather than American distilling tradition.

This is my second try with this one. First time I found it ok, but not as light tasting as I've heard wheated whiskies usually are. I dont think it stacks up to WL Weller 12, but we'll see how it goes tonight. Maybe it improves after sitting a bit.

Yall have probably discussed this one before ..... but it's new to me. Picked this up at McScrooge's (site of the infamous liquor store etiquette incident).

Produced by Copper Fox Distillery in VA. non-chill filtered, pot still, no added color. uses toasted applewood, cherrywood, and oak.

This one was tough for me to get my arms around. Initially I expected it to be like some Scottish highland or speyside whisky. Nope. In fact I was initially put off by the VERY strong wood taste. After setting it aside for a while, I revisited it determined to approach it without any preconceived notions of "proper" taste. No doubt this is a strong, woody whisky (hey, they are the ones who are leaving off the 'e', whatever). There is no finesse or subtle background flavors for me, just 'hit ya between the eyes' wood.

I would probably take a flask on a winter hike up in the Smoky Mountains. Cant imagine mixing it with anything. Anyway, my take is Wasmund's Single Malt Whisky is aiming to be a simple, direct 'burn on the way down and warm your toes' whisky. It succeeds at that level for me.

What do you veterans think?

I heard recently from a pretty good source that Dickel will be launching a Private Barrel Selection Program under their "Barrel Select" label sometime this Summer. There will be two offerings: A 9 year at 103ish proof, and a 14 yr at 106ish proof. These were described as "nearly barrel proof", but a little water will be added to the barrels to try and maintain certain "profiles". Something new to look forward to, I guess.
Caveat: I may be off on the proofs and ages, as this discussion was after a few, or more, whiskies...:D

Also, the Red Label Dickel is history.

Noticed that the place I had lunch at today had a bottle of Balcones True Blue on the shelf, and figured I'm not going to buy a bottle but I'd like to give it a taste. Only a single pour, so I won't claim to be very familiar with it, but thought I'd share my initial impressions since search shows no one has had a tasting post on it in a while.

Tall pour... thankfully, cost me $13 so I was happy to see we were most of the way to a double. Neat, water back.

The short of it, is to me this drinks like angry port.

Long of it, the nose on this is really great. Big brown sugar, some cinnamon, then a medley of what I'd call fruitcake spices that come together at the finish. Mouthfeel is similar to other corn whiskeys I've had like Mellow Corn, a bit of that oily mouth coating experience, pleasant. Taste starts with corn and brown sugary sweetness, moves to spice, and peppery heat. Flavors drop off and heat stick around for a medium-long finish.

Overall impressions was enjoyable. Not sure I'll be picking up a bottle yet, but I did enjoy it, and that nose is something else. To me that was something really interesting to experience in such a young pour. Drinks a bit rough, but I felt that to be more from the youth than the cask strength, for 123 proof it was quite nice.

Doh, my bad on putting in the bourbon tasting area. Thanks mods.

I've been hearing that Rittenhouse rye BIB is going to change soon from DSP-KY-354 (Brown-Forman) juice to DSP-KY-1 (Heaven Hill) juice. I like the Ritt BIB 354, so I'm keeping an eye on the stock at my favorite store. Tonight, I noticed that Mellow Corn, also a BIB but a corn whiskey, is listed as being distilled at DSP-KY-354 (B-F) and bottled at DSP-KY-31 (HH's fire-damaged location). If they're switching to their own make for Ritt BIB, are they also switching to their own make for MC? If so, will that bring about a noticeable change in the flavor profile of MC?
