The only thing I have in the house right now is Rittenhouse BIB. I had not had it for about 2 years but decided to try it again. Man this is amazing stuff! Very complex..love the chocolate notes. My question is, it claims to be a Pennsylvania style rye. How accurate is that claim? It is definitely different from WT 101 Rye, KC Rye..and way different than the 95% ryes..

So during my first trip to to Bourbon Trail last week I bought my first bottle of Rye, Willet 4 yr to be exact. The only other Rye I had tasted before this Rittenhouse and I really enjoyed it. However, this Willet is another beast all together and I absolutely love it. So, for a Rye rookie what should I try/buy next?

Today I bought a Jefferson's 10 year rye, a baby Saz and found my first WTR 101. Also picked up my first bottle of Dickel rye. Passed on many overpriced bottles of HW21 and a Hirsch 25. Oh, and a boatload of Willett 5 yr old rye.

A Brief Foray into Whiskey Politics
By Reid Cherlin

"..."What are your thoughts then," I asked, springing my trap, "about the rising popularity of rye whiskey?"

Boom.

"You people," Samuels huffed, shaking his head. "All the press cares about is 'what's next.'" He put his hand against my elbow, and for just a moment, in the midst of his post-partisan cocktail party for the Cocktail Party, he let loose his inner partisan. "Rye," he said firmly, "is a back-of-the-palate taste. Back-of-the-palate stuff has never been appealing to Americans. And that's a fact."

Read More http://www.gq.com/news-politics/blog...#ixzz2Rc2SaQjT

Never been appealing to Americans? Wow.
Well, no MM Rye then....and explains the use of wheat rather than any rye.

"Maker's Mark is unusual in that no rye is used as part of the mash. Instead red winter wheat is used, along with corn (the predominant grain) and malted barley."

Seems to be popping up a bit in the cocktail world. It's infused (not just oils) with saffron, orange peel and other odds and ends. 90 proof but source and mashbill seem to be a bit of a mystery still.

I think most of us know that the Ritt BIB that's currently on the shelves is Brown-Forman juice in a Heaven Hill bottle, and that soon HH will start using their own juice. Well, I talked to a guy from HH, and if everything went according to plan, they bottled their last batch of B-F Ritt BIB this past week. If you're a curious guy like me, this is an excellent opportunity to see how long it takes for the new stuff to push the old stuff out of the pipeline.

You know, I think it'd be nice if B-F bottled their rye with their own label, but I'm a whiskey lover, not a businessman.

The 6-year-old, 95% rye and 5% malted barley mash bill, is a dead giveaway that this is another sourced rye from MGP (formerly LDI). While the thought of a rum finished rye intrigues me, the price of $80 seems steep for a relatively young 100 proofer.
