Well, today I had the privilege of participating in a private barrel selection at the Four Roses warehouses at Cox's Creek. We selected two barrels that will be sold at Eric's store in Elizabethtown, Ky., Packages and More Liquors. It was quite an experience, and I must say that Four Roses certainly does it right when doing something like this.

We sampled from ten separate barrels, one for each of their ten recipes. All were 10-12 years old. Samples were drawn straight from the barrels and had plenty of char in them. We sampled at barrel strength, and then had the option of adding water if we desired (no one did). The sampling took place in the back of the bottling operation building, and the ten barrels were lined up on the floor immediately adjacent to where we sampled.

Ultimately we chose one barrel each of the OESF and the OBSF recipes. All that we sampled were good, but to us these barrels stood out. Can't wait to see them in the store and take some home!

I was hopeful that people might be willing to share some of their preferred recipes, ratios and components, or to at least share some of their mistakes, in order to shorten my learning curve as ease the burden on my wallet.
The Macallan 18 is impressive (my favorite scotch). For some reason Germany doesn't import the 18 year old sherry from Scotland. Stores that do have it here buy them from other countries and mark the price up. The latest price I saw at my local whisky store was €234!! I got a 1987 bottle from Portugal and a 1989 from PA for a much more reasonable price. That's a good find you have there. I hope you enjoy it. The Midleton is also a great Irish whiskey.

I've only tried one German whiskey (only this past this weekend). It wasn't bad, but had a bit of a Grappa taste to it. How does the Uerige taste?

In a state where Yankees from the Rust Belt have diluted the accent I still say Howdy as "Heidi" and say "nine" as "nighuun"..hell I won a prize in the third grade for drawing the Alamo. But I'll be &^%$43 if I will pay $160 for a 375ml bottle of 3 to 4 year old whiskey..even if it is made in Texas. Garrison has been spending too much ^%$ time with the East and West Coast wannabes in Austin (AKA t-sips to us Aggies). That's insane.

Before this is sent to PR@C the t-sips out there know I am just having a bit of fun..but seriously $160??

A day of firsts:

1st bourbon and ginger ale combo. Used 1:2 OWA to ginger ale and added splash of Angostura bitters. Tasty. Definitely better than Manhattan I made last week (blech!), but not as good as my Old Fashioneds. I've been drinking lots of bourbon neat lately and wanted give my taste buds a break.

Also mixed first bottle of OWA and Weller 12 (50/50 ratio). Giving it a week before comparing it against the source bourbons. Hoping it will decrease the wood notes in the W12 (one of my favorite everyday pours) just a hair.

OGD 114 up against KC 120 proof. Ive tried them side by side several times now, and cant say I notice a huge difference in them. If anything, the KC seems slightly more refined and the OGD slightly rougher. But, I dont mind rough necessarily.

What are your takes on them? Both are Beams, right? both similar proofs. Im fairly new at bourbons but say the price difference is far more than the taste difference.

opinions?

I'm headed out manana to Japan to spend some time with friends and the wifey...does anyone out there know good places to go hunting? I got into bourbon when I lived in Japan, used to drink Maker's Mark black wax all the time, it was stellar...but apparently no longer made. I'm hoping to find some places in Shinjuku/Shibuya area that are known for having great bottles, but I'll also drop in on small mom/pop spots if I have to.....any suggestions of what to bring back? I already have IW Harper 12 yr, thought maybe I'd get the 4R stuff.....thanks in advance for the help! Oh, and by the way, am I the only person having problems using the return/enter key? IE doesn't seem to let me use the return key anymore!?!?

We just posted our review of the new Jim Beam Signature Craft offerings.

These will be out in August 2013, $39.99 a piece at 86 proof. The 12 year is very much Jim Beam and will definitely appeal to existing Jim Beam drinkers looking to step up, but not interested in many of the big bold whiskies in the premium space. The Rare Brandy is an interesting experiment, but not as good as the 12 year. One thing to note is that Jim Beam went with screw tops for these, which is nice as there's no cork impact which seems to plague many of the premium bourbon releases that use natural cork.

Would love to hear your thoughts on our review.
