Hi! I am a chef from the Hartford area of Connecticut. I am almost 30 and have preferred american whiskey to other spirits basically my entire alcohol drinking life. First with coke as a line/shift drink at work, then in craft cocktails of all sorts. Only recently however have I enjoyed it neat. My GM gave me a bottle of Jefferson's VOVSM for Christmas, I went to my aunt's house for dinner, brought it along, and for whatever reason, it finally clicked. Since then I have been researching and hunting for bottles that interest me. CT has some pretty funky blue laws so sometimes availability is scarce or non existent. I currently have a small stash of Dry Fly, Angel's Envy, JPS18, High Wests, OGD BIB & 114, Dickel, Four Roses, Ritt, ER, WhipperSnapper plus a few more that are currently eluding me. No hoarding for me yet, but I do have an extra bottle of JPS18 as backup. Thanks for having me, looking forward to learning more and trying more whiskey.

Hello everyone! Another newbie here from Indiana. I live on the NW side of Indy (near Kahn's) and wanted to say hello. This is a fantastic board and I've learned an awful lot from reading. I've only been into bourbon for a few weeks now. I was always a Jack Daniels guy and never really bothered to explore anything else. I got into bourbons through a friend and have been tasting different varieties ever since. My wife & are doing the Bourbon Trail in a couple of weeks and I'm really looking forward to it.

Long time reader, first time poster! Just wanted to say hey and that I enjoy this website and forum. I have been drinking whiskey (JD, Canadian, bourbon) off and on for years but over the past few years I have become more in tune with my "bourbon" self.

I enjoy trying new bourbons, but I am a cheap b-----d so I try to limit myself to a few standbys and maybe a new experience each month. My go to is Woodford Reserve. I currently have Woodford, Blanton's, Weller 12 year, Elijah Craig 12 year and Angel's Envy on hand. I doubt my wife would let me pay more than $50 to 60 a bottle unless it was a special occasion (e.g., I let her buy $300 in shoes or something...not that that has ever happened). I know this is a bourbon site but I also like RedBreast 12 Irish Whiskey.

I almost always drink bourbon or whiskey neat or on the rocks, although occasionally I will make a Manhattan. Looking forward to learning LOT'S more about bourbon from the experts on this site. I live in Pittsboro, Indiana (about 25 miles from downtown Indy.)

I would be interested in learning from others where the places are to go for selection and price of bourbon in the Indy area. I shop at a local store owned by Big Red Liquors. The selection is decent but always looking for better!

Mike

I will start by saying thanks to everyone that contributes on this site. I've lurked for quite some time and been the beneficiary of a ton of good information. I live in Elizabethtown, KY with my wife and four kids. I am from Kentucky but never got the taste for bourbon until a year or so ago. I took a few of the bourbon tours and tried some of the small batch stuff and realized what I had been missing. Ever since then I have been working my way through the mid and lower shelf bottles to find my favorites. So far my top pics would be: Old Fo' Signature, Weller 12, OWA, WT 101, EC 12, EWSB, VOB BIB and probably my favorite overall was the current year Old Fo' Birthday Bourbon.

I am also into cigars. I think nothing beats the pairing of a fine bourbon with a great cigar. I look forward to participating on the site and making some new friends. Thanks for having me!

My descent into bourbonmania began two months ago, today. My wife and I were visiting some friends in Birmingham, AL. When asked if I wanted a drink, I gave my usual would-you-like-booze reply, "of course!"

"Scotch or bourbon?"
"Don't know. Not sure if I could tell them apart."
"Oh, you'll be able to tell."

He gave me two glasses; one with Basil Hayden and another with a since forgotten scotch. The scotch wasn't terrible but wasn't great either. Tasty but burny. But, the Hayden was sweet, delicious and much more approachable.

"Mmm, that's really smooth" (read: "I have no idea what I'm talking about, but I really like it")

Our conversation over the next couple nights revolved around bourbon. At some point, Pappy was brought up; the greatest bourbon that I'll never get to try. Somewhere out there exists a mythical unicorn of a whiskey that few, if any, can obtain. My response was two words long: challenge accepted.

My quest for pappy was short lived. I spent two weeks calling around and reading about my unicorn. Then I found it. Waaaay overpriced but I found it. I bristled at the price and hung up the phone. Then over the next couple days, I talked myself into it. Well, I talked myself into "just going and looking at it" which I knew was a bad idea. I went. I looked. I held............ I bought.

I won't say the price because I don't want this thread to turn into another referendum on the price-gouging pappy market. Just know that it's high enough that I'm embarrassed to have paid it (knowing what I know now).

A funny thing happened on my way to pappy, though. I started to enjoy this whole bourbon thing. Nearly every time I went into a shop to inquire about pappy, I bought a bottle. First, I tried Eagle Rare, then Evan Williams Single Barrel, then WL Weller SR, then Bulleit and so on. I found a couple blogs that I enjoyed like Sour Mash Manifesto and Bourbon Dork among others. I came across StraightBourbon and started reading through the threads, voraciously. Then I hit a thread that was closed to the public. So I joined with sole intent of lurking. Then one night, I hear this beeping. Turns out I had unwittingly logged into a chatroom and people were talking to me. So, I chatted. Met FishBowlJoe, Hectic1, Pieface and a couple others. Super welcoming.

Then I heard about dusty hunting. I've been out a couple times to very, very little avail. Apparently, someone has picked Gainesville, FL over. It's still fun but it'd be nice to win once or twice. Any tips/locations (within 50 miles) would be greatly appreciated. I promise not clean someone's honey hole out (among other things, I don't have the capital to do that).

And so, here I am. A budding bourbon enthusiast.

I wasn't going to tell the pappy part this story. I wanted to play this close to the vest and avoid looking like another trendy wannabe. But alas, it's part of my story and I don't know that I'd be here without it. And, boy am I glad to be here.

That's about it. Sorry for the ramble. Thanks for reading.

Been reading and lurking for a while. Moderately active on the Chowhound Spirits board, so it's nice to see some friendly names over here. I'm a big fan of rye-heavy brown liquors and a bit of a red wino too. Boston native, successfully hiding my accent in the Richmond, VA area for close to 20 years now. Father to 3 wonderful kids and husband to a gem of a wife. I like watching any sports with balls, running to stave off the mid-section expansion, and I'm a decent home cook. That's enough of my personal ad for now.

My recent obsession with Bourbon brought me here. I am originally from Michigan and have lived the last 12 years in Florida. Since moving to Florida I have been mostly into wines but as I have met some other Bourbon drinkers my interest in Bourbon has taken off. I have always found that sharing passions/interests with others make it that much more enjoyable. This seems like the place to do just that. Cheers!
