Actually I like it. If I sit down with rye, I expect a little sting. I prefer a higher proof. Not sure why really. Wheat is for the kicked back, rye (to use one of Linn's expressions) is a party in your mouth... :grin
Have you tried the Weller 19 year old? I like it very much. Linn and others aren't as impressed but, they are rye guys. Drinking my way thru some of the great wheated Bourbons, has helped me realize what a 'one trick pony' Makers Mark really is. Their marketing is brilliant, their Bourbon is ok.

I know I am not Jeff, but I Love Weller 19. A Lot of the "rye guys" mention that it was passed over by Julian VanWinkle as part of the reason they are not fond of it. I would have to say that just because It was passed over in becoming the ultimate expression of wheated bourbon, takes nothing away from it to me.

Well, I guess with a definite quantity of this stuff available, I am going to have to bite the bullet a pick some up. I'll let you know when I do. Do you liken it to the style of say Weller 12yo or the Antique? Funny how I adore the 12yo but detest the 107 proof. I don't know if it is a function of age or proof, but if it is age, the 19 ought to be just fine!

I havent had the 12 year yet, next time I got to a reds game it is on the list to get. I think of it as more in the line of Weller Centennial. Less fruity that Weller 7/107 and more obvious caramel/vanilla/molasses, with a good does of woodiness, but in a very good way!

[/QUOTE] I have a bottle of the Antique here. While I can't say I detest it, it is unlikely I will buy it again. I'm thinking this fruity-ness is really a result of not enough time in the barrel. A young taste that I don't like, and the proof intensifies it. Wonder what it would taste like with 5 or 6 more years on it? Is that what the 12 yr old is?

Old Fitz BIB -- the last of my second bottle.

You may recall that I found my first bottle undrinkable. The finish literally made me gasp.

Either I've gone from wuss to hardened drinker in one year's time, or I had a tainted bottle before. Based on the second bottle I'd call this a no nonsense, working man's (or woman's) bourbon -- a little rough at the finish, but with a very appealling nose and palate. Nevertheles, I still prefer the 1849, which sells for the same price at my favorite local liquor store.

(I really intended to do a one-on-one with EWSB '92 and Henry McKenna SB today, but I decided I wanted to relax, not concentrate on flavor elements and descriptive terms.)

My mistake on a Lebanon on 64. I thought I had seen such a sign on 64 a while back, but obviously I didn't!

Beej, before you say that it's us that keeps drawing all the dirty pictures, You've got a dirty mind! That almost makes me want to drive over and have a look for myself. That is at Lebanon Jct, instead of Lebanon. I65 exit 106 or so.

I totally love the Weller 19 yo. I also love the Van Winkles. They're all great wheaters! I find it interesting that someone would disparage the Weller 19 yo because Julian took a pass on the barrels. The flavor of the Weller 19 is definitely different from the Van Winkles...not necessarily better or worse, just different. A little drier, and woodier. Maybe the reason Julian passed on these barrels is not because they're not great whiskey, but because they didn't fit the particular taste profile he was looking for in the Van Winkles. If you're looking for a Picasso, you would probably take a pass on a Rembrandt. Anyway, if you haven't tried the Weller 19, I strongly recommend it, before it's all gone! It's my favorite bourbon at the moment. I've already bunkered my supply.
