In a two bottles I have noticed black sediment at the bottom when I tilted the bottle. I forgot the first brand, the second was a bottle of Stagg. Is this charcoal from the charred barrel?

Yes it is.

You can strain it through a coffee filter if you like.
Barrel char! A.K.A. The Spice of Life!
I've often wondered if barrel char has any affect on the whiskey. I know there isn't much of it, proportionally, but in the back of my mind I sometimes wonder if the uninterrupted contact "ages" the whiskey any further in the bottle.
By the way, BourbonGuy, if you drink it will not hurt you. (If it did, it wouldn't be in the bottle.) The few BTAC bottles I've had, I actually shake them up before I pour. I like the hazy effect in the glass.
I'm afraid my palate is not sharply enough defined to notice any additional aging.
